Sarge's is probably the only reasonably popular restaurant in all of NYC where you can order coleslaw over a pastrami and corned beef sandwich and not be asked by the staff (and maybe by a customer) to leave the premises -- post haste! Although such sacrilege upon a perfect piece of brisket is ordered fare in S. Jersey and Philidelphia, it is not ordered that way by self-respecting New Yorkers! Compounding your gastronomic faux pas was giving the sandwich at Sarge's your highest score, despite that the rye bread there crumbled out of your hands upon immediately being touched. The only ones who rave about their pastrami and corned beef are the tourists who eat there, which entails most of their customers. The attempt by two west-coasters to seriously critique a NY culinary staple like the pastrami sandwich rang hollow. It was tantamount to my going to Los Angeles -- or San Diego -- to preside over and bestow the Blue Ribbon Award for the best tacos. Bruce Rutherford
Oh come on! What kind of fair and equitable taste testing is this? All four sandwiches needed to be identical: Sliced rye bread, pastrami, corned beef, and NYC style deli mustard. That should have been it for all four sandwiches. If the restaurant could not produce that it should not have been included in the test. You are in NYC for crying out loud and you couldn't find four restaurants that could do that? Out of all the delicatessens in NYC?
As a native New Yorker, come on guys. This comparison is all over the place and inconsistent. A pastrami and corned beef sandwich at one place, just Pastrami at another and a Ruben at a third place. Rye bread, French banquet, vegetables, mustard, Russian dressing and sauerkraut. Russian dressing and sauerkraut is a Ruben which is a different sandwich style that will always be less dry. If you’re going to do a comparison of NYC best pastrami and/or corned beef sandwiches keep it consistent. Have a pastrami or a corned beef sandwich on Rye with mustard (the standard) at each deli. Also no offense to the guy from California that doesn’t like mustard but the pastrami sandwiches in Cali are as good as world famous Katz’s Deli (the oldest deli in the US)? You’re crazy. Ive spent a significant amount of time in Central and Southern California, the sandwiches don’t even come close. They are diner quality at best.
100 percent agree get a pastrami and a corned beef separate 2 sandwiches how can you judge a pastrami sandwich if it has corned beef on it? veggie and russian dressing c mon !! you have not experianced a pastrami till you been to katzs
First time I went to Katz's we all literally laughed at the piles of meat with the bread slices teetering on top and we joked about how we should have shared. Ten minutes later it was all gone.
It simply cannot compare to Katz's. Essen is the best glatt deli, for sure. But there's no comparison. Unless they want to offer fatty sandwiches sliced by hand.
I can get a Pastrami Reuben for about $6-8 on Long Island at pretty much every deli. Edit* Thanks to inflation my local deli is charging $10 for a pastrami and melted Swiss on rye.
I stay in LIC when I visit NYC. The Plaza Express Deli by Queensboro Plaza is awsome and less than $8 for the largest sandwich. (The Ruben and American were my favourites). Katz does have better pastrami but not $25 worth.
@@0mnicide i used to work in a deli :: 8 ounces in a pastrami or cornbeef sandwich ; 4 ounces half sandwich ;; pastrami / cornbeef;;; best straight out of the cooker no water cooling; takes taste out
I just discovered your channel with my son and we both love watching your reviews. We watch them for hours when he was home sick recently and now we are big fans.
Ughh.. yeah we split everything 50/50 so I spent my own money on this one.. but honestly i'd rather not get it for free so I can be objective.. and INCREDIBLE idea lol.
Thanks for the recommendation. I ate at Sarge's for dinner when I visited NYC for the first time and was not disappointed. The Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwich was delectable. My only issue was that the bread sliced could have been thicker so it wouldn't fall apart as you eat. But other than that it was terrific.
Sarge's is a must, don't care what the others have to offer as Sarge's has all you need for an authentic corned beef or pastrami sandwich. Highly recommended 🙌
Looks great re:NYC -- Second Ave, Deli is still great, BUT the real challenge is what city has the best Delis? My nominee: Montreal! and the best deli in North America, Snowden Deli in Montreal.
Only foods typically associated with New York, but you're not gonna find let's say Tex-Mex foods in New York that even come close to what you'll find in the Southwest!! Bagels, deli food, pizza, sure.
I don’t think Sarge’s beats Katz’s. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you had just meat and mustard on Katz’s sandwich whereas you had Russian dressing and coleslaw on Sarge’s. You should compare apples to apples in order to make a fair comparison. I also recommend Pastrami Queen for a superb corned beef on rye.
Been eating Pastrami in NYC since 1945. Nineteen-forty-five. Three quarters of a century (3/4). Nothing, nowhere, not on this planet, is there anything like Katz's. Wasn't, isn't, never gonna be. I hate the crods there - I hate the chairs there, and I certainly don't like the prices there. BUT! If you want a knish - square or round, or a latka and a Dr. Brown's and a real pickle, a pastrami sandwich which is better than ***. Katz's- before Paris, before a trip to the moon, before you win the lottery and before you die. (I do not own, nor am I in any way affiliated with this old place. I'm not even Jewish.)
Yep Sarges deli is awesome pastrami on rye. Having lived in NYC and been to several. Add some potato salad and a cold Heineken beer you’re good to go!!!
There’s absolutely no sandwich culture in Germany so no one would even think about spending close to that money on a sandwich. The ingredients are pricey so the price is justified.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO, GENIUS IDEA. I LOVE HISTORY AND I ADMIRE THESE IMMIGRANTS WHO WORKED THIER WAY UP , DESPITE UNIMAGINABLE POVERTY. THAT'S WHY I LOVE KATZ . I ENJOY THIS IMMENSELY. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sooooo glad you went to Sarge’s!!!!!! They are my must do every time I’m in NYC. I literally go from the airplane or train to the hotel right around the corner from there (SSMA Club) check in, drop of my bag, and walk to Sarge’s to get my sandwich and their vegetable soup. The BEST soup I’ve ever had in my entire life. No lies. They’re also my last stop when leaving. I get a sandwich, potato kniche, cheesecake and soup to go.
Many of you have obviously NEVER eaten at a decent deli and are complaining about the prices and have likely spent 25 on a good steak or a couple sushi rolls. A proper deli sandwich at what is considered a good deli - is gonna set you back a bit. 25 IS on the high side as far as deli sandwiches go - but some of the best in Los Angeles - where I live - are $20. But the coleslaw and or sauerkraut or other parts need to be top notch to make it worth it, including a good potato salad on the side or breakfast potatoes (recommended instead of fries if they have good potatoes).
I`m a Hell`s Kitchen boy, so I`m familiar with good deli....I only eat these monsters a couple of times a year, I put them into the same category as an expensive bottle of wine or Champagne....Thanks for sharing your video, it rocks !
Maybe check out Carnegie deli- the sandwich I had there was excellent. You must then head up to Montreal and visit Schwartz deli and Dunn’s for authentic Montreal smoked meat. Oh boy now I’m hungry 😂
What a great video. I've been living in NYC for over a year, and I've eaten excellent Pastrami sandwiches at Katz and Pastrami Queen in the Upper East Side...I will definitely try Sargent's!
*Attended high school a few blocks away from Katz's deli. in the early '70s, my personal opinion is Katz's, whenever I make the mecca to N.Y.C. that's my first stop, thanks for the upload, fantastic reporting to a well-made video!*
Katz's has good quality meat but not the best. Their mustard is the best deli style I have ever had. I grew up nearby and we had them cater the last couple of funerals and they did a fantastic job. 2nd Ave Deli was the best in the neighborhood until they moved. Their pickles were incredible.
2nd Ave deli was the best I have even visited,, but it was so long ago it was on 2nd Ave. (I moved upstate.) I liked that it was not a tourist trap. The atmosphere was completely different from all the others. More real. I will visit the new location when I return.
The ONLY reason I wish I could go to NY is for the delicatessens. Thanks for this video. Please do Italian deli serving a meatball sandwich on sourdough bread. Do they HAVE sourdough in NY?
Okay, I recently came back from new york and I went to both katz delhi and surges deli For it being my first time in New York trying this restaurant me sandwiches. I have to admit the katz hands down had better the better meats and service
Went to Katz because of the movie When Harry met Sally. Had two sandwiches, two drinks, fries 70 dollars. but worth it. LAST TIP, DO NOT LOSE YOUR TICKET THEY GIVE YOU. a guy did not have his ticket at neighboring table and he was there awhile trying to settle it out with the staff.

Regardless of the price, I would have to aleast try it once.
Have you every tried The Pastrami Queen (1125 Lex @ 78/79)? I would also recommend a trip to the Bronx to the last two Jewish delis in the boro - Loeser's Deli -214 w 231st (Bway/Godwin Terr) and Liebman's - 552 w 235th st (Oxford/Johnson aves.)
Man that first sandwich needs cheese !!!!! And the second, you Need cheese bro !!!!!! And the third !!! 😁 and the Fillmore Sandwich ugh , Cheeeese bro !!!!
A real Pastrami enthusiast, diet mix corn beef with pastrami, or adds Russian dressing..... pastrami on rye with mustard,,,, pickles on the side....with a celery soda.....from a true NYC Lower East Sider....
Are you kidding? Katz's pastrami sandwich is a joke compared to the Mill Basin Kosher Deli on Avenue T in Brooklyn. Have the pastrami on garlic bread and it will change your life!!! Katz's is a nice tourist trap.
Ben’s deli in Manhattan beats any of these 4, too bad they didn’t even go there. I moved out of NY 5 years ago but still miss the food and culture there. ❤️ NY.
Aaaahh New York Delis. I occasionally miss the delis of NY. In many of them you can have your sandwich made anyway you like it. You could spend quite a bit of time just vlogging on NYC delis, it may be able to be its own channel or at least a pretty thick book.
@Anthony you ever had bicks pickles? they suck something fierce. I was also there on vacation...i was having lunch. should i carry around a jar in my back pack next time?
Used to go to Katz more when I was a kid when prices were cheaper. Now as an adult I can’t afford to eat there. What does that say. Tourist trap for sure! David’s brisket house on Nostrand ave. In Brooklyn between Herkimer and Atlantic ave. Very good deli. Reasonable prices!
How on earth did you eat all of that food in one day...let alone one week...? I know you are young but good grief two bites and I would be full for the rest of the day. It all looks so good!
