And what they said during the last update. I still think this video actually came at the perfect time because this could be the turning point of league’s stagnation into growth. I stopped playing league myself because not enough changes (in a fun way) between seasons. It’s why I enjoy TFT, each set brings a bunch of new, fun everything.

Yep, but it wouldn't hurt if they made the game more beginner friendly so it's easier for more people to get into it. Tutorial sucks and does not explain anything. Currently it is pretty much impossible to get into LoL if you don't watch 100 tutorials on youtube or have a bunch of friends who already play and can teach you.
@justhair17

@@aabeeek How do you make it beginner friendly though? One of the beauties of the game is that its extremely complex both on a mechanical and strategic levels. Its kinda impossible to make it beginner friendly, unless you just tell them to play Garen and that way, they wont have to concentrate too much on the mechanical side

i feel LoL is in the spot of CS where its never changing but unlike CS it does change sometimes (the current patch is a good showing) where while both are the same one is CS with big new player friendliness and LoL struggles with it both get a good amount of "friend list players" where you might start playing due to another game another player on your friends list invites u to it and while some quit its not fully swinging the new vs quitting player swing kind of like how the deathrate and birth rate is always favouring the birthrate and when it does not that the time the game starts to die and i feel league is going to keep there new players up with new changes for new players kinda like how CS 2 made the game easier to get into League can do so too

I think league is not growing anymore, there are not many new players, the learning curve is huuge so its more like maintaining the playerbase, if you look how many games have risen and fallen during the lifetime of league, i myself made breaks with league and played other new mainstream games, but i always came back. There was no other game in my lifetime that hooked me as much as league, and a part of the relationship with the game is the same like with Marvel movies, many people grew up with Iron Man since 2008, as well as many grew up with League

As someone who's been playing for over a decade and never had any interest in a moba prior to league, I feel safe saying it's because of the diverse champion pool riot has created. I went from playing this because I had nothing better to do and my online best friend played league. To playing it with or without him, rain or sunshine, simply from finding a main I fell in love with playing(Jhin). I've watched my now wife go from a console gamer to solely play league because she found her set of mains she loves playing. Personally I would love to see the more lore, MOOOORE! 😂

I think League has a chance to evolve itself into something different if given the chance. The fundamental gameplay is so enjoyable that it works in a PvE setting with the proof of concept being star guardians, followed by being proven to work with Odyssey and then proven again with Swarm. If they make a replayable roguelike/lite experience, this game could easily live for a long time, likely with a small to medium sized audience but a dedicated one.

It's definitely on a downhill-path. Not a steep one and I don't think it'll "die" anytime soon, it's too much of a coloss of a game for that, but it certainly isn't generating as much hype anymore - There are a platitude of reasons of course, so can't single out a reason just like that. I, for my part, did quit and certainly not am missing it anymore. I'm looking out for other new MOBAs, though. That's why 'Deadlock' is a nice change of pace (but not scratching that itch).

For a long time now, I feel like League could've grown so much better if they were ever able to find and implement the same camera view, mechanics, and gameplay/map variation as SMITE before anyone else. 3rd person horizontal view (with an option to go 1st person or 3rd person bird's eye view), basic attacks that require hitbox connection, abilities that need to be aimed from the same distance-perspective from the character's view, and mostly-balanced character pools (everyone can die to minions and monsters early, roles for characters are more dynamic (DotA has this too), character kits can dictate the meta but non-meta heroes aren't left collecting dust/relegated only for a certain portion of the player-base), game modes that can actually change the functionalities of your character (otherwise, the objectives themselves are different)... Anyways, LoL will stay for as long as there's content to explore (new builds, new champs, new neutral objectives, new ways to play certain champs). Or, at least until to the point the playerbase finds a Riot Games release for the genre they'd actually enjoy (STILL WAITING FOR THE RIOT RUNETERRA MMO AND THEN MAYBE I CAN QUIT LEAGUE FOR A WHILE).

League has the potential to become like chess: an immortal game, testing skill, game knowledge, strategy and, on top of that, very much alike football and other physical sports, team coordination and cooperation. Unlike these games though, it suffers from its high level of complexity: people cavort easily pick it up, and their early experience is seriously damaged by it. A proper tutorial system would increase the game's lifetime tenfold. Limiting the starting pool for new players, to control the amount of starting knowledge required to navigate other players' game plan, some shorts about strategies related to objectives and how impactful is to control them. Finally, as ppl get higher in lvl, introduce them to fog of war. Some form of playground, in this direction, would allow players to learn the game without being overwhelmed, and increase their own agency over the game (with chats off being the default in those gamemodes).

I think what makes League eternal is its "sports" aspect, just like most sports, players can play it with friends and also watch professionals on the biggest stage, and the fact that it never fundamentally changes makes is viable as a sport. It could be the first mainstream E-sport.

While it is debatable whether or not this is THE biggest responsible for league's stagnation, I think everyone agrees few games are as hostile to beginners as league is, and having a low influx of new players isn't the best for the game's longevity. The causes for it are many, and I feel like elaborating on the most obvious ones: the toxic community, the awful tutorial and the ever increasing cummulative knowledge, to be unnecessary, so I will instead talk about those I have the impression fall under the radar. - League's balancing is suffocatingly conservative. At one point in the past, "play your own way" was League's slogan. Nowadays, it feels like League's balance team is just trying too hard to make sure games stays the same on multiple fronts. An early game where all players play in their own isolated bubble with a transition to teamfights around objectives that dictate the outcome of the game. In of itself, this is not a bad thing, the problem is when players try to do something different. If a jungler isn't interacting with camps for 80% of the time, if a mid laner leaves lane and its play is not pixel perfect, they get punished extremmely harshly and all the opponent must do to perform said punish is getting a farm lead. That makes league's early game (a) extremmely monotonous and (b) if there's only one viable playstyle, then the winner is just the more experienced player. Thinking outside the box isn't just not encouraged. It is actively suppressed. TheBauffs probably being the most infamous example of that. When was the last time a champion changed its role for good and replaced its initial role altogether? I can remember Karthus and Nidalee going from mid to jungle, Maokai and Nautilus ceasing to be junglers altogether and Gragas changing roles every so often, but outside that, what happens when a champion finds a new role 99% of the time? Riot will give that champion changes to actively force it the role it was before. Camille jungle, Camille support, Sett and Panthoen support, Lucian and Tristana mid, Swain, Heimerdinger and Cassiopeia bot. Even Brand, who became a support for nearly 10 years, Riot tried forcing back mid lane. If the meta stay with tanks and bruisers top, mages and assassins mid, marksmen bot and mages and tanks bot for all its existence, existing players will never have to relearn the game and the knowledge gap between old and new players will keep increasing. We never had the chance to play a game with double mage kill lanes bot, marksmen mid and no farming junglers like Camille for more than a few months and see how the game would adapt around it. Riot always nerf hammer everything to fold the game back to the previous status quo. - League's new content has became increasingly convoluted. Though convoluted designs are usually more complex than simple designs, convoluted doesn't necessarily translates into complexity. When you make a convoluted champion, even when in practice it is actually fairly simple, there's so much information going it can be intimidating for new players. Meanwhile, you can have complex champions without them being convoluted. The best examples being Zed, LeBlanc, Shaco, Heimerdinger, Orianna, Singed, and Draven. Most of these champions' abilities can be described in a single paragraph, yet nobody would argue against them not being complex champions. A new player is capable of understanding these champions on a basic level right away and see the potential in them. Meanwhile, when facing these champions, you never get the "what the fuck just happened?" you get when you're up against Aphelios or something. I like to use Camille as an example here. Not because she is the worst offender, but because she makes the point really easy to understand. Camille's Q gives two auto-attack resets, the second of which converts your damage to true damage. Her W deals damage and has a sweet spot which deals bonus damage and slows. Her E is a long range dash that stuns on contact. Her R creates an unpassable zone around a target and knocks back all opponents around it. None of these abilities feel underwhelming or incomplete based on these descriptions, yet all of them have effects which I didn't mention. Camille's Q is also a movement speed steroid. Camille's W also heals her. Camille's E is also an attack speed steroid. Camille's R also makes her untargettable and gives her on-hit damage. If you are reading this, you're probably familiar enough with the game to know the things I described above, but a new player facing Camille might wonder why is Camille so fast despite having a basic understanding of her abilities whereas against Master Yi that's easier to understand because he has an ability that's about making him fast. Convoluted abilities like this increase the barrier of entry for new players, not to mention the power creep, but that's whole other beast of its own. It feels like League is balanced around the players that are still around since 2013 while thinking the game will feel fresh enough just by cramming more stuff into new champions' abilities.

Predictions : 1. Terribly unwelcoming to new players even with the new QoL changes. The current tutorial is somehow worse than the previous one (and completely buggy at that) and you're not helped to pick a role or to get good at the game 2. Closed LPP programs means no new content creators to advertise the game en masse and no creator can more easily make a living of league content and therefor reinforcing the advertising 3. Too many projects at once that made league unfocused for a while, especially after the lay-offs 4. Too much attention and care given to Wild Rift compared to the main game and players getting salty about it I think League is on the right track to reintodruce new players to the game but RIOT needs to focus and realise that, at its core, Riot IS League. All their projects are based on League and success from it stems from the fans of LoL. But if your main game can't keep afloat, the rest of your company will suffer from it. But I guess the sucess of Wild Rift might just make them care way less of it in a way...

I feel like people overreact the learning curve of League. I mean, I have to say that since I joined, League has gotten more compley with more objectives and even more champs, but I, back in 2019 started playing with 0 friends. I had no one to guide me. And I got to a completely decent level by the end of my first month or so. Granted, I was one-tricking Sona in support, but that was the learning experience that I needed. After that, figuring out minions and everything else was much easier. But alright, granted I did what probably no one has ever done since the start of the game, I looked at the champions descriptions and chose them based on the skill required to play them. That's why I played a lot of Amumu following Sona. Then I went onto a bit harder champs such as Wukong and later Mordekaiser. And from that point on I branched into almost everything, playing an ample amount of adcs and midlaners. Of coursey this whole process took about half-/one entire year, but I had fun from the start, because playing Sona sup wasn't difficult. It's really nostalgic to think back to those games and see how far I've come. I have hugh hopes for the future of League

Lol won't die anytime soon, but the lack of interest and their profits won't be as they used to. Nowadays you even see bots at least once a week and that is not good for the health of the game. The same case happens with CoD where it used to be one of gaming's titans, but nowadays the company hides player numbers and they resort to bots constantly. League is the same, worlds used to be this epic event where you could see stadiums full of people and everyone was talking about it. Nowadays it's just a small conference room full of people, with some casters in the corner and two big tables where team A faces team B.

One reason why league is so toxic is because it’s the most snowballing game i can think of. So much of a single match is determined by how every individual does. If you do poorly in top lane and got ganked multiple times, not only did you lose personally, that affects the rest of your team because now the top and jungle are unbeatable monsters. The whole team feels the weight of your failures when you fail. So it adds a lot of pressure to every player and why flaming is so prevalent. If you bot died to ganks multiple times it will effect you. The jungler will be w major threat and if they come to gank you and succeed, it will largely come at all the gold and experience they got from killing your teammates. Other games dont have as much of a snowballing effect, like in a shooter or something. Your teammate dying is gonna give your enemies a massive power spike.

I don't think declining viewership of western esports is really indicative of declining interest in the game. Western esports is pretty much a joke and the teams stand no chance of ever winning Worlds. US teams are full of imports and basically no US players so why would US people follow and root for these teams? The decline of youtube viewership I also think has little to do with League declining and more the change of the youtube algorithm. It now favors long videos like lazy stream highlights rather than short well put together videos like it used to. Same thing happened to content for a lot of other games. But yes the biggest problem is the hostile new player experience but this can be fixed by Riot if they tried. The culture of self loathing around the game is much harder to fix however.

I think someone has mentioned it, but one of the main reasons why Mario can be so widespread is because of who he is, not what the game is. You know Mario as a character, but you know League of Legends as a game, a MOBA. This is why (what i like to see and what theyre doing) is to not make League of Legends as a game, but as a world, with multiple characters. That way we might have different characters doing different things, which could or could not be ridiculous (Braum racing Fiddlesticks in Noxus, using Xayah's feathers as an item?)

When I started I had no clue what to do I would literally play jinx as botlane and run top lane sometimes hitting jungle camps. Since then I've learned so much from RU-vidrs and managed to get to Gold 3 last week as a Jungle main.

The biggest thing league can do is open up a forge/custom game mechanic like overwatch has. Let the players create their own game modes with the different map and game assets. They keep making new game modes then not letting us play them. If we had access to swarm, nexus blitz, arena, twisted treeline or dominion to do what we wanted with them or play them at our leisure it would give people a fresh and better experience. Let's say you just played 5 ranked games in a row now you want to unwind on some wacky adventures in nexus blitz you could do that. ARAM as the only other real option doesn't give us much to work with.

the fact league makes it so difficult to learn the game as a new player is gonna be one of the biggest reasons this game won't be able to grow; that and the plethora of smurfs new players have to play against. If Riot just invested some resources into actually creating a well done tutorial that taught new players the fundamentals of the game: like how to lane, how to farm, how to manage waves, how to jungle, map control, vision control, objectives control, cross mapping, cutting losses, teamfighting, split pushing, wombo combos, and even win conditions; this would then actually equip them with how to game works and understand how what they need to be doing. they don't have to go in depth in every topic but at least let the new player know "so this is what you have to do to play the game at its best and what good gameplay involves." Even going over the fundamentals of every lane would be good so the new player can decide which role they wanna play. something that shows how each lane works and what their job, typically, is in the game (junglers gank and secure objectives, supports establish and control vision while supporting the team and the adc early game, etc.). you know what would really be useful? having a dedicated page in the client for educational purposes. Theres a tab for loot, collections, clash, your profile and the store, they should just add one for learning the game seeing as how complex this game can get. This would be a massive upgrade for teaching new and returning players alike without overwhelming them right out the gate with info.

League used to be my main game. I played it for a long time, but I don't find it fun to play casually anymore. Every game I've played recently -- normals, customs, and quickplay included -- all feel so incredibly sweaty. Nothing wrong with encountering skilled opponents, but it just drains my energy so quickly. I need a rest after two or three games with how much I have to try and dial myself in to play. I'd like there to be more things like Arena or Swarm. Things that are easier to get a grasp on compared to playing on Summoner's Rift that can be done solo, with friends, or with randoms. I'd just like to have more of a reason to boot up the janky League client than hitting gold 4 and collecting a skin at the end of the season.

I "soft quit" a while ago. Games' still installed (I mainly play TFT these days but that's declined as well over the past year) but I've played less than 10 matches on SR since the start of this year. It's just not fun anymore. Played the game since 2011. Over the years Riot has failed to properly address the rampant toxicity in the game (and occasionally even facilitated it by making toxic emotes), pandered too much to the Korean and Chinese markets by cutting down average match duration and releasing an overload of e-girl and edgelord champs and broke almost every champion design boundary out there resulting in champions like Yasuo, Yone and K'Sante who, while being great to play as, are horrible to play against. The final nail in my coffin was the durability patch in I think mid 2022 which sought to increase durability but instead ended up replacing the existent neverending assassin meta with a neverending ADC meta (which for me as a jungler that almost exclusively plays melee bruisers is the absolute worst and most frustrating meta possible). I couldn't adapt, my WR plummeted to around 40% and with that the last bit of fun I had playing the game went down the drain as well. It's a pity really because I still love the concept of MOBA's but League is just a mess right now and I can't be arsed to try and learn DOTA 2 because as difficult as League is to get into, DOTA 2 is an order of magnitude harder still. Tried Arena V3 as well when it got released but it's still an absolute mess balance-wise and so massively skewed towards favouring duoqueue that playing solo with randoms as teammates is pointless until Riot strictly divides solo and duoqueue.

I can see how league of legends is dying, especially after riot fulfilled the player requests (new game mode, pve, not hot anime chicks skin lines) hell even kda gragas is here now, which means riot realizes the danger they are in, so they revealed all their cards like this. After all the stupidity they did and wasted the identity of the game for years, they now realize that the players who left will not come back again and the streamers who were not supported will not return and that the greed they did has consequences that will follow. While you see the rise of the rest of riot games like tft because the developers listened to the players' opinions beautifully. Great support for the player community and their game in general. I hope Riot, with its failed management and developers, realizes that it has been trying for the past four years to turn League of Legends into Mobile Legends Bang Bang.

I think league would do well with a mentorship program. They already hand out partnership accounts to those who make content for them, even if they no longer do, and FFXIV has a good mentorship program that rewards mentors for helping new players learn the game. Picking mentors would be tough, and making a system where they can teach tougher still. But it's far from impossible. I think it would help if (And when if the rumors are true) they make the game in normals less about camping out a massive lead, which kill joys any interest in a game for new players. I've been in alot of games where one team simply harvests the whole jungle starting at 20 minutes. one team really can't stop them because they don't have the stats to take 1v1's or even 2v1s, so the winning team gets to collect all that gold and EXP while the other team has to share a tiny amount of minion gold for the crime of falling behind by a few kills. That's not mentioning dragons and barons. Then the game goes for 40 minutes while one time mindlessly farms and the other can't farm cuz they get ran down one shot over and over, and all the jungle camps are always gone. That's a terrible environment for even experience players, let alone new ones. You learn the most worthless habits and learn to play passively because you had no choice otherwise. I reccognize that might be a 2 sided sword. Being on the other side of that feels amazing and might be the secret sauce that keeps players coming back. Personally though, I think it burns more new players than it does satisfy them.

Season 2-6 player here. Riot has made League of Legends stale. The community behind the game is absolutely terrible and I would say the number 1 reason I quit. Has someone who plays fighting games now, the community is night and day. They try to help new people Tell them what they are doing wrong and need to improve on. RU-vidrs and streamers are make content for new people. I remember trick2g stop making my way guides because Riot would nerf the strat. The two weeks patch cycle is not helping either. If you wanted balance in the game, you would have had it by now. League of Legends is a complex game but it's really simplistic. That's why when someone comes up with an unorthodox strategy and it works. Riot doesn't change the incentives, the risk-reward, or options. They kill it and wonder why the pro scene is stale. Old man yelling at clouds rant over.

I think another thing to mention is it hard to watch LCS. Watching "super teams" get dunked on international after international event. Watching NA have so little talent teams become a retirement home for Korean players. Year after year I just eventually don't even have hope. Earlier on It was very much This could be the year. They had to have learned had to have fixed some issues had to have done something. But nope NA just shows up and repeatedly looks like a Challenger team playing against actual pro's. My favourite way to play was throwing ARAM on while steaming games, but it just isn't there anymore. It feels forced.

I unironically love the lore of LoL and every piece of LoL media that's not the actual game. I quit the game around 10 years ago and haven't really looked back and I've never been happier and had more free time to actually do useful shit with my time ever since. Still, Arcane, LoR, the Ruined King RPG, the upcoming LoL fighting game, pretty much every piece of LoL related media have been amazing, it's just that all of it's based on that asinine, god-awful, boring and notoriously toxic garbage game...

I feel like as time goes on, the old players will grow out of leave due to real life responsibilities as they get older, and there won't be as many new players to replenish the numbers since league is a very non-newbie friendy game. It might takes many years till then though, If league doesn't change its course.

Yes it's 100% stagnating. Take the current patch, they added a way to queue items and it ended up being bland, it doesn't make a difference whether you use it or not since you can't edit what you want to buy. They should've just 1:1 copied DoTa's item queueing. Then there's the jungle ping which doesn't make a difference, sounds just like the tower protect ping. But we'll see what S15 offers to the map and items. It's pretty boring having a stale map all these years, even though they sort of changed the map. We'll see. 👁️ 🥚 👁️ Oh! And the other thing is the ancient spaghetti code engine, they should seriously do a league 2.

I got into League, like really into League, back in the pandemic. Our squad was starting out, everyone sort of learning the game from scratch/ vs AI (and that sucks even more back then) and everyone was settling on their champion and playstyle then. And in the pandemic, online time is not lacking - if not excessive - and so it became a spot to vent, have fun, socialize all in one, which is rather perfect for League because it has massive downtimes (laning phase, mid-late neutral state) and rewards coordinated play and information sharing. With friends, it's the best game to exist that has just enough variety in champion but same experience that people can grow together, which is my favourite part of the game. So long as Arcane brings in people and older players reintroduce to new ones, I can't see League dying out any time soon.

It's the "pickup and play sport" of online gaming. I believe league has cemented itself and cant change too hard in the same way sports cant even add a new rule without losing views.... I just realized as I was writing this someone already made this analogy.😅

I was one of the people that had to learn league by myself. But it was easier back then. I started in season 3 and remember the times playing Elise mid building ravenous and runaans because I liked the idea of having aoe in both forms. Didn’t even get flamed by people. Nowadays it feels like the learning curve is so massive, everyone is so good as opposed to back then that if a new player pulls shenanigans like those they’ll get flamed so hard they’d quit. The game doesn’t have enough new players. Most low levels are just smurfs working on their new “level 30 to masters challenge”

I did not finish the video yet, and the comparison might be flawed, but lets compare it to RL sport: Football is the same in the last 50 years, soccer is the same in the last 50 years, baseball, badminton, etc... those game in their core basically never change. And lets be honest, compared to them, mobas with their updates do an excellent job at giving the player new things to spice up the gameplay. Personally i would even argue that many mobas are way more exiting for the player during the game because they are build in such a way that any waste of time is a disadvantage. You can always do something productive and you are never forced to stand around and do nothing like you see it in soccer. But like any sport, there are just only so many fans you can bind to the game. And i think thats ok.

If someone expresses interest in League I tell them to try Wild Rift (faster game time, mobile = casual mindset), only play PvP/ARAM and go to settings and auto-mute every single form of contact. It's such a nicer experience because the *game* is great fun, steep learning curve sure, but there's so much info out there you have a lot of agency over how you approach overcoming that curve. But there is no reason whatsoever to engage with the players in your games. Until you're at higher ranks no one has anything of value to say so don't expose yourself to their inevitable negativity.

Honestly the game is so hard to get into for new players. I made a new account to play with my friends who wanted to try the game and we kept getting matched with people over 400+ (pretty sure it was because we were a 5 man) and getting curved stomped. Sure there’s bots, but it doesn’t really teach them the basics.

Tbf, I do think playing league is an overall enjoyable experience (unless you have a bot as a support, that is), but it takes way too long to understand the game and actually know what you are doing. For a new player, it could take a year to learn what every champion does, have to play against them or with them, how to play every lane and know wave management and when to take objectives. Most ppl simply do not have the time for that and I dont think the game is as fun if you dont understand what you are doing

It's also a deliberate choice by Rito. There is, at least in this moment, just more to profit from older players who have become whales than any new player; thus the game caters more and more towards whales and less towards new players; you see the same problem with WoW

Something they tried to do over the past couple of years was to make the game faster. For me, that was not only a different experience, but it was significantly inferior to a more drawn-out match for me. I do not know if them attempting to return to a longer game will be successful or not, but I am hopeful that the changes will be beneficial even if they are too little too late
