No none of his songs has ever been popular are rap songs… literally. Honestly not trying to say this but i feel like yall are labeling him a rapper because he’s black. I mean all of his albums are either country or alternative or pop.

@@Jovaughnbey123he raps in the songs, ergo he's a rapper dude lol. I think you are just trying to be a gatekeeper because you are jealous of how popular he is and how successful he has been. God forbid someone try something new in the industry, so you try and act like he's not a rapper lol. Who the fuck are you to decide that? A nobody, exactly.

When you toggle between hip hop/pop/dance genres you are just labeled a music artist at that point. The rapper label has been thrown around loosely by everyone who’s not familiar with hip hop culture.

The moment between Granddad and Riley at the end was surprisingly heartfelt for this show. Also, I like that one of the commentaries this episode touches on is how rappers end up telling on themselves through their songs (similar to the snitching episode), or how their dirty laundry comes out via someone's biography 🤔.

This is one of the most important episodes of the series because it deconstructs Riley and people's perspectives on him. It can be argued that Riley is the most popular character in the show and that his character has quite an extreme massive ammount of fans. This is due to his relatability and how real his portrayal of being a hood black kid, as opposed to his hyper-aware brother. The common praise Riley gets is his "tell it like it is attitude", but therein lies the problem that many people miss with his character. Riley is basically the "cartman" of boondocks only 99% less evil, 98% of the time he is portraying the general satire of the episode and is not the character you are supposed to agree with, a surrogate for what is being mocked and is the joke. This is noted by his most famous line "N*gga thats gay", but this episode shows that Riley (just like many black youths and adults in that era and somewhat now) doesn't really know what gay is. He enjoys a stream of hyper-masculine/ tuff media that displays that in order to be on top and to "make it" you need to be "hard" and tuff. Anything of sensitivity, vulnerability, femininity, or weakness is a no from what he intakes, and being "Gay" from what he thinks he understands is the ultimate embodiment of that. Riley truly is ignorant when he "tells it like it is", not just because he is a child, but because he has never been shown better. The media and the social circle it comprises create a feedback loop that doesn't show any better. I love this episode so much because it serves as a reminder of how far we have come and how far we still have left to go.
@CLDJ227
@CLDJ227 4 месяца назад
Funny how you mention he's like Cartman. I always kept thinking he was supposed to be like Bart Simpson. A rebellious kid character people in real life would not want to put up with, and the major difference being that Riley will still get punished from time to time 🤔.

Love this episode. It's another great commentary on fan culture, it's so obvious but Riley can't see it or acknowledge it. Riley who calls everything gay can't see the obvious. Hip Hop has FOREVER had questionable lyrics in songs. Also it's a whole lot easier, especially now, for a woman to be gay or bi in music . Janelle Monae is a perfect example, she still has her regular audience.

Eh, we got Lil Nas X on the pop/rap side, we got Kevin Abstract. Tyler and Frank Ocean are openly Bi. I feel like we made a lot of progress. Funny enough I am reading a book about almost the same situation called "out of position" its a gay furry book about a defense back named "Dev" who is a tiger and he and his football bros on college campus would get drunk and crush pussy all night long, then one he meets a gay fox named "Lee" who was cross dressing, then go back to dorms and have gay drunk sex. at first Dev denies but thanks to Lee he comfortable being gay but he can't come out of closet and try to get drafted in pros, Lee is huge football fan but also gay right activist but he dropping out college to become a pro football scout and try to keep up long distance relationship with Dev. Dev is down to earth guy, who big dense but lovable goof while Lee is very smart and pragmatic but also very guarded and calculated and he wants to help Dev so much he neglects his friends and LGBT college group for his career and his lover. Its a much older book from 2009 (takes place in 2006 and ends in 2008) they also have sequels to this book (I'll have to buy them soon to see what happens next to Dev and Lee)

A couple things: It's always been easier for women to come out in the industry. Queen Latifah's sexuality was well known way back in the early 90s and nobody really gave a damn. On the lil Nas X point, I gotta say, I think a lot more people dislike him for reasons other than him being gay... A lot of controversy surrounding the guy.

"That's real Dun-Dun-Dun-Dun" 😂 Edit: as a member of the LGBT Community, I can honestly say that the term "Homo by Association" pisses me off to no end. It's offensive to it's highest degree. Just because you like someone's art and music and that person is gay, it DOES NOT MAKE YOU GAY!.

Growing up, my hip-hop playlists were mostly made up of Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and yeah, Will Smith. Not every successful rapper had to lean into the gangster persona.

Hip hop artist vs rapper. Lil Nas is a pop rapper not a hip hop artist.
