Moving from Brazil in the next couple of months and definitely aimed for Chicago! Safety, cleanliness and overall life quality of the city are the most attractive features the city has to offer. Correct me if I am wrong please.
I love having four seasons. It's really only January and February that are bad. I lived in places with milder weather, and it was boring, and people were a bunch of flakes.
I was born and raised in Chicago, This city is not a melting pot, there is still a lot of segregation. Colored people are often looked down upon in north side neighborhoods that are closer to the lake. Crime is something that is pretty common in all neighborhoods. There are no safe neighborhoods. I live in Lakeview East and have seen and heard of crime taking place during day light hours. So much so my Walmart was one of the firsts closed in the city because of the crimson Al’s it was attracting. A couple blocks from me, near that Walmart, someone was shot and killed. The crime the person committed? Walking a friend home at 2:00 A.M. Cost of living is a bit higher, maybe I’m just used to the cost but it seems average to me. I have family in the burbs and prices are about the same, slightly less in the burbs, the state is just in need of money so taxes are high. Rent is ridiculous, in my neighborhood a studio apartment goes for $1250, usually electric and cooking gas are included. Some buildings you still have to pitch in for trash and water, it’s usually a flat fee around $50, could be more. The information in this video is higher than normal. CTA Is a great option for transportation. All CTA train stations and train stations that go out from the city to the suburbs have CTA bus connections which is BEAUTIFUL! CTA is monthly pass is $75 for now, since the virus situation, and you can use it on buses and trains unlimited rides for the month. There are also one day passes, 7 day, and reduced passes for senior citizens. Jobs are plenty and competition is not terrible. Healthcare is pretty good and there are options for all classes, there is county care, state level care, and plenty of private insurance options. Schooling is pretty good for underage and for college options. There are about 7 city college options on all sides of the city, Malcolm X is my fave because of their science and medical programs. Quality of life is pretty good here. There are many options for aging people to get help and move around. Younger people are the ones that have a very good quality of life as they can do so much with good health.
I don’t find the segregation to be bad at all. I’m black and grew up in englewood and now I live in Edison Park and everyone has been nice to me. My wife is Asian and she hasn’t had any problems either.
I left the city once I got a remote job. I couldn’t stand feeling so cooped up anymore (and I lived in Uptown, about 7 min walk from door to lakefront). I needed more quiet, more space for less money, WAY less crime, and zero Chicago politics. While I’ll always say Chicago is the best city in the US (it’s just special lol) I’ll never live there again. I avoid it at all costs. I don’t regret moving for a second, but I also wouldn’t deter someone (especially in their 20’s-early 30’s) from checking out living there!
I left end of 2022 and coming back end of this year! I’ve lived in Oregon, California and Texas (Austin) and Chicago is by far my fav city. Can’t wait to be back.
I left 11 years and there know way I would spend one dime in ill! Companies. Are leaving and taxes are thru the roof plus crime and a gun grabbing state. Election. Coming and don't want to be in a big city what's coming.
Where are you getting these sources? I feel like the other major urban areas are all more expensive than chicago. Also, chicago has really gotten a bad rap, but if big city life isnt for you, you can live in a close-in suburb like evanston, skokie, oak park, cicero, berwyn, oak lawn or even elmhurst or somewhere else slightly further out. The close-in suburbs have their own kind of downtown area and they are very nice cities. Actually, almost all suburbs of chicago have good downtowns, and living in or around a downtown of a suburb like downers grove or mount prospect which are 20 miles out.
I just spent two days in river north, and absolutely fell in love with Chicago's beauty. Would love to come back and run on lakefront trail. But im from a cold windy town and every winter i say im moving south lol.
I honestly don't understand why people find it expensive to live here. I guess if you're picky about where you live, it can be a problem. My family is from the Dominican Republic, and their occupations range from factory workers to white-collar professionals. Everyone is on track to retire or has already retired comfortably. They were able to buy homes both in the Dominican Republic and here, and some even own multi-unit buildings. My brother worked in a factory for nearly 30 years and will be retiring soon. He owns property in Chicago and built a beautiful home in the DR for his retirement. What the heck are you people doing? I guess a new immigrant family moving from a poor country sees opportunities differently. I was born here, and my siblings who were born in the DR are greater risk-takers; maybe there's something to it.
Because the rent is really expensive? I share rent with my sister but before it's split we pay $975 but soon we'll start having to pay for utilities. So we'll end up paying around $1000+. Going from paying $475 for rent to 3 times rent is hard for a lot of people in this economy..
@@Elsith01 maybe not 3 times the rent, but the point is going from paying $475 and splitting an apartment is a lot different than having a studio/1bd by yourself with rent starting at $1000+ in this economy..
I just came back last week from my first Chicago visit. I was blown away by architecture and the overall vibe. My previous travels included Europe and any city that offers me history, art, original architecture is a win for me. I instantly wanted to move but I quickly stopped myself because it's a false feeling. lol
As a person who spent the first third of my life in the Chicagoland area, I always measure my current MAJOR sunbelt city, where I've lived the second two-thirds of my life, against Chicago. My city is like an endless sprawling brown suburb without a city to be a suburb of. It has its advantages and isn't horrible in any way other than its mediocrity, but it just isn't a "real city" like Chicago is. However, it is home. But like the song goes, Chicago keeps tugging my sleeve. It's the guy or girl in high school who you just never really forget and always wonder, "What if?" Sure, the winters aren't the greatest - but the spring and fall are phenomenal. The museums are second to none IN THE WORLD. The architecture is a fascinating walk through a century and a half of history... and such great care was taken to make the city look great. Yeh, taxes are high (much higher than where I am), but Chicagoans do save money in other ways. Sigh. Part of me will always miss it... particularly in the spring and fall.
Well since I do happen to find myself currently living out here in what is a lovely 4 seasoned great lakes town and state I actually really do like the weather up this way and since I am in northeastern Wisconsin Chicago winters aren't anywhere near as bad as our winters and Chicago still remains a beautiful big metropolis despite its nasty rep its got tons to offer from anywhere from it's plenty of unique different museums and parks and vibrant neighborhoods / communities you don't need a car you can always rely on the public transportation. Chicago isn't even in the top ten when it comes to deadly crime. Chicago has great networking tons of major companies and as place that has nice lakefront beaches and parts of Chicagoland like some of those suburbs are laid back and easy to deal with. Corruption is everywhere so is crime. Expect it crazy shit still happens anywhere everywhere all the time. Do you're own research I felt safe in the suburbs and other energetic lake front towns like Evanston. The music scene is and always has been lively. Chicago is cleaner than NYC but I love them both. The hustle and bustle of Chicago has always been interesting. Tons of amazing universities. Still find Chicago healthcare system fascinating . So much that Chicago provides and yes a abundant in active festivities it's a action packed environment. Be careful in Chicago be mindful. You should know the drill by now . Visit for 3-4 days on vacay check it out for you're own before making you're jump to becoming a Chicago resident.
I'm just going to comment before watching this. Just got back from Chicago. I heard lots of bad about Chicago so I was going to skip it on my Lake MI loop that included the UP. My adult daughter lives in NYC and was joining us for this trip and insisted on a stop in Chicago. We stayed 1 night 2 days. I was blown by the cleanliness( my daughter said it's due to alleys...NY lacks that) , the architecture, that little river and of course that awesome lake....and you have that beach right off the city to swim! Love it. Especially for the sailing opportunities. I spent most of my time saying "this way better than NYC" my daughter was getting agitated with that. ;) ok, now I'll watch

First, I've never been to Chicago. I'm aware that a city CAN be dangerous. Hell, if you ask me, ALL cities are dangerous. Your breakdown of the city gives me great insight into Chicagoland. Chicago is great but would be so much better of a city if CTA was more funded, and if there were more development in the underfunded south and west sides.
It really depends on the neighborhood. Also, if there are some high price outliers, they tend to skew things up. I think that median price he showed has to do with larger apartments which there are plenty of in the city. Many people live in 2 or 3-bd apts (two-income homes) and they're the ones that tend to be in that $2k range. Before 2020 it was pretty normal to see apts renting for about $1/sq. ft in those larger units. I know because I used to live in one, and the space was very generous. It's normal for for those units to take up an entire floor of a two or three storey building. Rents have increased a bit like everywhere else after the pandemic especially in new construction units, but you can still find good affordable housing in legacy buildings.

I've been thinking about moving to Chicago for a while, but the thought of moving somewhere I know nobody scares me. Are people in Chicago generally cool with outsiders and transplants from other parts of the country?
Depends on where u live in the city. People in chicago often say yes but they live on the northside and thats the only experience they have cus this city is pretty huge. In Lakeview and Lincoln park and whatnot, yes they're very nice. In Englewood and Austin, you'll prob get that much more brash, blunt chicago attitutde
For me Chicago has NEVER BEEN worth it, the place has terrible weather and the city is massively corrupt, sure there are somehow big name companies and opportunities still there and the summers are nice but the downsides are insurmountable and too great to ignore. It blows my mind why people congregate there. I can't imagine selling my car or living in a tiny shack of an apartment. There's just too many better alternatives elsewhere.
It blows your mind? Everyone has different preferences. I can’t imagine living in a suburb and driving everywhere, but that’s me. Tons of people are in Chicago because it’s a great city and many people enjoy the city life. It’s not a bad thing. At the end of the day, those alternatives are not giving up close proximity to many amenities, a high abundance of culture, good food, architecture, and an overall world class city. But, for some people it’s worth the trade off. We can all get along.
Wow...I love Chicago but tell me where they have better food, a better transportation system, and better quality of life. By the way, I'm one of those hoping to move to the Chicago area.
