Avoid Moving to Chicago IL Unless You Can Handle These 5 Facts! 

Chicago, overall, is hands down the best big city in the US. Been here 15 years. There are a couple pretty big downsides, all related to the terrible segregation. Most of the neighborhoods are really nice. The ones that aren’t, really aren’t. It’s also a very safe city, especially for its size. Winters are long, but there’s lots to do. Summer is completely amazing. Fests everywhere.

For me it’s the most affordable big city when compared to NYC and LA.

Planning to move to Chicago in about 1.5 years, hope it works out well. I am a big fan of cold weather, don't want to drive, and it seems way more affordable than NYC

I love Chicago, and honestly, people who don't live here think it's much more expensive than it actually is. I came to Chicago without knowing anyone or having a place to live with about $3500. I had a job lined up and that was it, and it wasn't a high-paying job. I made $15 an hour and I survived. If I can do it, you can too.

I live in NOLA and was in Chicago for four days the first week of February this year and it wasn't too bad weather-wise. It was cold, but not nearly as unbearable as its reputation. There wasn't any snow on the ground at the time and I really didn't need gloves...I think the temperature during my time there was in the mid 40's-high 30s. As usual, I enjoy myself whenever I visit, and bemoan having to leave.

Very nice video. We go to Chicago every July for a week and we LOVE IT. Your point on safety..... I tell people like this. Every city has parts you may not wont to go to and Chicago is like this as well. Chicago is also SO big that if you are not looking for trouble you probably will not find it. Stay downtown/ Lincoln Park and you will be fine.

I went to Chicago for a 3 day break after visiting Boston and NYC. Chicago is the BEST city in the states. So good that I returned 10 months later for another holiday in December for a week. Saw the bears, bulls, hawks, visited Cubs and it feels like a cool village downtown but with the most beautiful architecture in the country. Went out to the burbs n saw the real Chicago n it was movie perfect. There are a few crazy’s in the loop after dark so I’d recommend the mag mile if you’re nervous, the jewel in chi towns crown has to be wildberry pancakes for breakfast. Worth another trip from uk for that alone!

Hey Taylor I just wanted to chime in with my experience for a minute- I live in New York City and visited recently. I have to say that I really fell in love with the place. The whole Metro area just seems full of immense possibilities, I feel like my spouse and I could find a place there or even retire to one of the suburbs. The city made a great first impression on me, but I did stay to the North, the Blue line from the airport/Rosemont to the loop and back. I have also visited it for a convention back in my 20s and it was a good time. Of course, the crime is my only concern. I actually felt reasonably safe on the Blue line and in or near the loop, but maybe other areas might be more risky. Recently it has seemed that crime is increasing there...hopefully not. Maybe coming in on the commuter train (Metra) might work better for us in the times we would want to come into the city. At the least it is definitely worth further exploration, I plan to.

I visited forever ago and now I'm looking at moving because of treatment. I think the most memorial moment was meeting up with my friends who I visited with at a 7/11 for slushies, after arriving on my bike, and we walked to the Lincoln Park, to nap.

I moved to CHI from NYC a year ago this month. The transit here is good, but I feel like I need a car in Chicago. I never felt like that in NYC and really didn't need one there. The buses are safer in Chicago than the trains but less reliable and often delayed. It's quite frustrating. I live in Uptown and love the area.

One may need a car if they wanna go to several places in a day...Chicago does have car sharing services..(Zip Car is only one of them) you pay a service fee to use a car for a few hours to run errands.....The Service fee covers maintenance, insurance, When you first get the car each day it has a full tank of Gas..when you return it you have to refill the Gas tank.

Another reason why I am so deeply in love with PIXIE ASMR, CHICAGO, ILLNOIS AND AMERICA!

On the transporation front, I moved to Chicago a bit over four months ago from NC so ofc I have a car. I live in the Loop and have been beyond fortunate not only live directly beside basically every line in the loop, but also to only pay $140 a month for parking in a garage. I'm supposed to only get four leaves a month for my garage, but for whatever I reason I get unlimited leaves. As I work in Uptown sometimes at night (which forces me to use the red line) I'll drive those days, but typically the CTA can get me where I need to be. Overall excellent video, I'm actually looking forward to it getting cold here haha

I grew up in Chicago and go back often. The winters are brutal compared to my area of California.Also,I would need a car if I lived on the South Side or even in order to visit family there. I no longer feel comfortable walking around the neighborhoods that I frequent to visit loved ones.

I grew up in and around Chicago. Living now in Memphis, I really miss the Chicago weather. Winter was outdoor time (sledding, skating, snowball fights). It was never too cold. I also miss the CTA. As a kid, I was able to easily go downtown to the museums and parks. Of course things felt safer in the early sixties. When I visit, I park the car and get a CTA three day pass. It’s relaxing watching the cars on the Kennedy parking lot as we glide by on the blue line. Memphis has buses, but they only go downtown, and on a very infrequent schedule. I haven’t tried to use mMemphis transport since college (when I had no car).

The city is awesome. However I dislike the cold weather. Unfortunately it’s highly segregated. I live in a diverse community. Further,I no longer need a car due to the walk ability. I live on the lakefront in Hyde Park. One of the best areas to live. I have lived in Chicago all my life. Never experienced crime, no theft, no break in, nothing. Yes, there is crime yet I have been smart in how I navigate this city or any other city.

I visited Chicago twice & loved it (I’m from Boston). You are spot on with public transportation the only city I would say is better in that department is NYC. Surprisingly they say apartments in Chicago are expensive but it still has ways to go to catch up to us. I would definitely gas is more expensive out there then Boston believe it or not.

Do you know the affordable cost for apartments? And do you know for which areas? I want to move there but the costs I see are way too high.

The talk about insane prices in New York is a little similar to the talk about crime in Chicago (as well as New York, for that matter). Yes, the issues exists; New York is an expensive city. But that doesn’t mean every middle-class New Yorker suffers paying his or her rent. For example, I’m paying slightly over 2K for a three-bedroom. It’s a matter of luck but also has a lot to do with your ability to negotiate.

It looks like it's beginning to change a bit as more development is happening on the Southside. As for the crime, yes it is problem, but the whole city is not in flames like the media tries to portray. We actually do get to enjoy our lives living in the city. LOL

I grew up in the DC Metro area but some areas you have to be careful in the Downtown areas. I grew up by Anacostia neighborhood which is very bad. Friendship Heights is nice neighborhood but i moved to the state of Virginia and i love it. I been to Chicago a few times but it's been a minute since i been there.

Your experience (anywhere) is what you make it. If you go somewhere with negative expectations, that is what you will experience. If you move outside of God's will and for your own personal desires, you cannot expect to find favor and safety there. It is that simple.

As someone who lived during the time of the Rodney King riots and has seen what happens when a person is in the "wrong" neighborhood during times of civil unrest, I have to resist the urge to move into neighborhood where I'm in the minority - especially in a city like Chicago where not only are the police ineffective but also where the crime rate is currently pretty outrageous. Anytime I start thinking otherwise I just re-watch the Reginald Denny situation, and remind myself that police are still kicking off racially charged situations from time to time (George Floyd) and I kind of look like a cop (big old white guy, ex-military) which could make me a target.

I love Chicago, but it did seem like the Twilight Zone due to the segregation, 😮especially visiting from NYC!

Milwaukee is the most segregated city in America. Chicago is listed as the second. The south doesn't come up until 4 with Memphis. I still love Chicago. I'd rather we have our own neighborhoods, and fight for funding. I love my people. I'm from Milwaukee.
