This said, the stage musical is closer to the book than this movie adaptation… In some ways the previous movie is closer to the book than this, even though the stage musical is possibly closer to the book than that lol. I guess it depends how you look at it… I would argue that this is still a pretty good adaptation of the stage musical, even though I wish that the changes they made would have made it closer to the book than less… But it does fix pacing issues I had with the stage musical… Mixed feelings…

Fun fact, The girl with the red beret is a character named Hortensia! She was a character in the 1996 movie (the girl who explained the chokey to Lavender and Matilda). In Roald Dahl’s book, she was actually kind of a trouble maker and served a lot of time in the chokey herself. She kind of enjoyed trying to scare them in the book, I’m guessing that’s why in this movie she’s the one who started the school song and the chokey chant.
@jaydebolton6414

20:10 I don't know if you picked up on this in the movie, the Trunchbull gave Miss Honey a "bill" of sorts and said that she had to pay back what the Trunchbull thought was owed to her when taking care of her. And most of that money is taken out of her paycheck if I remember correctly. I imagine that it's illegal to do that, but when it comes to abusive relationships, financial domination can be a strong tactic to keep victims in line. That's why she didn't leave.

I mainly just get annoyed when people go “but why did they cut..” or “what were they thinking to change…” and they’re referencing something that was never in the book to begin with, only the movie adaptation. 🤦🏼‍♀️ As for liking one adaptation’s creative choices over another’s? That’s fine. That’s opinion. I can think of 3 explanations for Matilda's story: 1. She can see the past. 2. She can read Miss Honey's mind. Matilda only starts telling the story after meeting her. 3. She can connect to spirits of the dead, in this case Magnus. I think this is the best fit for what we see, since she knows details from before Jenny was born, and it's kind of an ironic twist on the way she uses her telekinesis to make Trunchbull think Magnus is haunting her in the original book. In the musical, Magnus is actually involved, still doing his best to look out for Jenny. It's still Matilda's plan and powers, but maybe Magnus is somehow giving her a boost of extra power at the end.

My least favorite part of this movie is the brother's removal. He's an oddly integral part of the story because he's meant to show the parents hate Matilda not because "oh I don't want a kid" it's just they don't want her exclusively because of her intelligence and her want to make a change and stand up for people.

I think one of my favorite differences between this and the 90s movie is Matilda is an inspiration and a revolutionary even before she has realized her powers. I think it adds a lot to the message that even if you're small and feel powerless with solidarity and bravery you can stand up to anyone
@Dotterelly
@Dotterelly Год назад
All the characters are in the book. The girl with the beret who explains things a lot is a girl called Hortense who's in one of the older grades and tries to frighten and impress the new kids with her war stories. It's also openly stated in the book that Trunchbull does extreme punishments because other adults will never believe a kid who claims to have been thrown over the fence by the pig tails because it sounds too fantastical. Between People being frightened of her and people not being willing to believe the victims, no investigation is done. Matilda's powers are exaggerated in every adaptation I've seen, but she does have powers in the book. The powers come from her not having enough challenge to use up all her brain power, so the spare brain power comes out as telekinesis. However she can only move small objects. She knocks over a cup, but never lifts it. She practices for a long time to be able to lift and control a cigar so she can control the chalk to write the warning at the end. Also in the book Matilda loses all powers the minute she's skipped to the top grade and has more challenging stuff to learn.

Also the high note of "Revolting Children" is actually in the song, it was just remixed badly for the movie so you can barely hear it. In the official recording you can hear it better. Though he doesn't sing words, but he and Hortensia just sing "whoa-oh-oh" and "down down down"

@serpentmaster1323

@@liliaeth that’s actually exactly why I miss the songs they took out. Not because they’re about the parents, but because they’re about the other characters that matter. Matilda the musical is about matilda sure, but the character who experiences growth in the musical is miss honey. By removing ‘pathetic’ and especially ‘Loud’ Miss honey’s development was gutted. It makes her involvement in ‘when I grow up’ feel a little out of place, and it makes ‘my house’ feel kinda irrelevant. Telly is completely justified to remove with the brother and the intermission missing, but like another comment said, it removes context for what specifically about matilda her parents don’t like. Now, wether that information is important is actually debatable.

Some fun facts about the original novel because I love the book too much and want to share them! (Though I haven't read it in a while so there's a bit of margin of error) 1. Amanda Thrupp (the girl with the pigtails) did cut her pigtails off after being thrown! 2. Hortensia (red beret girl) was the "rebel" before Matilda got to school. The reason she explains everything to Matilda and Lavender is because she spent so much time in the Chokey for her pranks and misbehavior. Honestly a little sad that she didn't have a bigger part in the movie :( She was so fun (Also she put itching powder in the Trunchbulls' knickers) [EDIT: She was put in Chokey six times her first term, twice for a whole day and the rest for two hours each.] 3. The reason that the Trunchbull gets away with all of this is because no one ever believes the kids. If your kid came home and said that the headmistress had thrown a girl out of the play yard by her pigtails, would you believe that? 4. Along with messing with her father's hair and hat, Matilda also got another kids pet parrot and put it up their chimney, convincing her family it was a ghost. 5. Miss Honey's house was originally completely barren. She had like, a hot plate and that was basically it. (Also i don't remember if this was in this movie, but the reason Miss Honey is this poor is because the Trunchbull made her sign a contract to give her most of her salary to pay her back for all the food and clothing she'd given her over the years, [aka basically just "oh I took care of you so pay me back]) 6. Lavender catches her newt specifically to put in the Trunchbull's drink. The children are a lot more rebellious in the book, Horntensia even treats it as a war. Anyways, long rant aside if you liked either of the movies I highly recommend the book, it's definitely one of my all time favorite books from my childhood. I'm going to go reread it now :D Bonus facts bc I'm rereading it: 7. After Bruce eats the entire cake, the Trunchbull breaks the plate over his head. 8. The opening line is; "It's a funny thing about mother and fathers. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful." Dahl then goes on to write insulting report card comments for fictional children which are just golden. 9. Matilda writes limericks!

There's no point comparing the Matilda musical to the old movie. They are both adaptations of the same book but they are unrelated to each other and take different approaches to the themes in the book. On a personal level, I'm not a fan of the old movie adaptation because I felt like it fell flat as compared to the book, partly for how americanised it was. The musical film has its issues but it definitely nails the uk setting. But the stage version has it beat for adaptation imo. I've seen it twice in the west end and I'd go again in a heart beat.

Definitely prefer the musical version, despite the loss of the brother it captures the spirit far more than the yank version. And not this girl ignoring that for the stage they put on the same voice because the character and musical is designed with specifics in mind, the school song is made for a southern sort of RP hybrid accent. UK actually has more recognised accents than the US and the actress is Irish so she's putting on a stereotypical accent.

The original film was extra bombastic because it was a 90s movie and the original book was pretty short so they had to add some stuff. It makes sense that this version would be a little different, since it's kind of an adaptation of an adaptation. But it's also valid to not like it as much if the original film meant so much to you. I mainly know the film version of the soundtrack so I actually didn't know about them cutting out Bruce's high note. It probably would have bugged me too. All I know is Revolting Children makes me feel like I can fight God, and that's the kind of energy I want to bring into 2023.

it’s not related to the movie at all, this is based on the stage musical that is based on the book, they did not watch or reference the 90s movie during production

Royal Shakespeare Company theatre: If I had a nickel for every time I originally housed a musical about an abused girl with the power of telekinesis, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

The beret girl is hortensia. Since in this movie it was a uniform school the red beret shows that she is a troublemaker.

I think what took away some of the scariness of the Trunchbull in this one was her singing. Even what she was imagining was just to be free of her job. It was kind of sad. I mean, she would have had to go to school to even BE there, right? So, I don't know why a person who hates children THAT much would go to school for the exact thing she hated. She could have even taught people how to hammer throw or something. She was apparently very good at it once. In the musical, she just seemed not as scary. Even if she DID kill at least two people with her scheming. I loved the scene where they cover the boy up with their jackets. It was funny and clever. Most of the rest of it was underwhelming. That being said, I really liked Miss Honey and the story of her parents. And while I didn't really feel most of the songs, I liked 'Naughty' and the ending song 'Holding My Hand'. I thought they did a great job with the last bit. And Miss Honey's house in this one was closer to the real thing in the book. She barely had any money to live off of. I'd imagine that she had wanted to stay close to one day take back her father's house. All in all, it doesn't compare to the 1996 movie nor the book it was based on. But, while I usually don't care for musicals, I did think they did well with the songs. The songs seemed to fit with the story, which is the first time I've seen that in the few musicals I have watched. Usually they just break out into song for no reason, at random and it takes me out of the story being told. This one, I think did a great job at being a musical.

OK OK OK so, pros and cons between both films... Pro - The music/choreography/production value in this version is great and the scale is bigger than anything the "High School Musical" films tried to achieve, which automatically makes this more entertaining and investing than those films ever were, at least for me. Yeah they skipped that high note but WOW it was fun to see the school and setting used the way they were and the music itself is still catchy as hell. Con - I never thought of this book or story as one that needed music to really sell/communicate the plot, characters or themes. The fact that Dennis Kelly found so much creative material to work with and expand-upon in order to MAKE music for this story is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but for me, the telekinesis was the only real fantastical item that the story needed to give Matilda an edge over her adversaries (besides her intelligence and perseverance). The music is not unwelcome, but certainly nondiegetic in a noticeable way. For me, it's one point that the original film has on this one...but more on that later. Pro - This Matilda has BALLS (however you want to phrase that). She's confrontational, a social justice advocate and stands up for the common good of her peers, versus towing the line and adhering to the status quo while secretly undermining the system. I like her energy and her direct attempts to stop things from going wrong. Con - The Matilda of the first film will always have my heart mostly because she was unassuming, patient and understood the need for tactical approaches in her undoing of the Trunchbull. It was a slow burn and it made the ultimate finale one that felt more satisfying. The energy of this film is mostly diverted and invested in the musical numbers (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just peaks and valleys of energy, versus the gradual coalescence in the first film). But I loved how everything feels a bit sinister and otherworldly in the first one, the chalk scene is still spooky to this day. The one with the chains in this one is fine, just a little much. They do more with less in the first film. Pro - Thompson is selling it and has far more lines in this film than her counterpart. She's having a great time being a monster and it shows. Con - Pam Ferris scared the CRAP out of me as a 10-year-old. She was larger than life, malevolent, powerful, intelligent but superstitious, seditious and misanthropic almost to the point of parody and I loved every second of her. Thompson getting her comeuppance in this version is fun and expected and has serious production value assigned to it, no question. But the catharsis of seeing Ferris get her butt handed to her at the end of the first film was akin to smacking a corrupt politician in the face and shaming them out of office. The kid in me still cheers when she is cut down like a malignant rotten tree, dethroned and banished forever. ...and THAT, for me, is something the first film has on this one, on the whole: true catharsis. In the first film, Matilda is what you would expect an abused, neglected, often dismissed and virtually invisible child to be: secluded, lonely and unsure of where she fits in the world around her. She finds comfort, solace and even hope in her books and eventually in her schoolwork, something she had to seek out on her own. She really didn't have a friend or anyone to talk to, except the characters in her stories. DeVito has a great voiceover line early on where he sums up her outlook fairly well..."So Matilda's strong, young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world, Like Ships Onto the Sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are NOT alone." That scene alone endears me to the film in a way few have. The Matilda in this new film is closer to Annie from "Annie"; a spitfire, full of fire and fight and her singing/actions reflect that. It's a new approach, granted, and not bad one...but the Matilda from the first film has to earn her fighting spirit, her desire and need to eventually say "no". When she does, it feels complete, like it has come full circle and now, Matilda is not the child who watches things happen...she changes things for the better. Her catharsis is brief, but healthy and earned and used to full effect, not to imprison or kill, but to punish and deter such injustices from happening again. I like this musical...but it's for a different audience, I think. I can enjoy it. But the first one, while far from perfect, was exactly what bookworm-me needed. ☺ Fun vid! Still love the hair. What's next?

I think I’m some ways this movie is a lot darker than the original. While the Trunchbull herself and her parents are more comedic, we see more into the effect of abuse on Matilda. She’s angry, scared and just hopes that someone takes her away and adopts her. Especially the song Quiet. It was really powerful and shows how awful life has been for her.
