Now, I understand how most people don’t like Victoria and that Victor should have ended up with Emily. But here’s the thing, the way I interpreted Victor’s and Victoria’s relationship was despite knowing each other for literally a day and literally marrying on the same day, they did try to get to know one another. When both of them describe each other’s life’s, you can tell that their families are really strict and want them to act a certain way and would do anything to look proper in front of the society. Victor and Victoria don’t really care for that, instead of business, they want to marry in love or at least marry to someone they see a future with. The fact that both know what’s it’s like being locked away and restricted to many things, they find comfort in each other’s loneliness and solitude. I like the fact that Victoria finds Victors clumsiness and shyness endearing, while also later risks her safety and status to ask for help and make sure he was safe. And Victor finds himself shy around Victoria but finds her easy to talk to. And later does everything he can to get back to her. And although Victor only wanted to marry Emily cause Victoria wasn’t available. He also did it because he was heartbroken to think that Victoria simply moved on and didn’t see himself living anymore, so in a way, marrying was basically like suicide. And Victoria was in shock and basically an empty shell without Victor. And as much as Emily deserved better 😢, Victor was just not right for her, and she wasn’t right for him. From the moment they met, Emily was just trying too hard for him to like her, so while he was in shock of what was happening around him, she showered him with gifts and affection that sadly couldn’t be given right back at her. And although Victor shouldn’t have used her, Emily did use him too, to fill that emptiness and hurt she felt when her ex abandoned her for dead. She was a sweet and kind girl who just wanted to be loved but couldn’t be loved back not matter how hard she tried (now I’m crying!!!😭) and although probably wouldn’t mind marrying Emily, he just didn’t see a future with her. Not the way he sees with Victoria. Victor and Victoria just clicked, Victor and Emily sadly couldn’t, that’s why Emily let him go, so he can be with someone he can live with. NO HATE! For any of those characters just wanted to share an interpretation. Also sorry for the long essay and thank you for sticking to the end.

@@videohistory722 I thought all/most stop-motion characters have an armature (tiny skeleton inside their bodies so they're more pose-able), but from what I heard, the ones Tim Burton used for Corpse Bride were very advanced and they even customized a bunch of new ones, especially for effects like Emily's dress and veil, which required multiple different rigs to make it flow in the wind. They also figured out how to animate Victoria and Phyllis, her mother, walk while making it look like they're walking despite their large skirts that completely hid their legs. In fact, their models/puppets didn't always have legs under the dresses and they were just torsos with a small rig under them, which made them bob up and down as if they were taking footsteps.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Barkis was intent on killing Victoria just like he did Emily. ("You have only to suffer this union till death do us part. And that will come sooner than you think.") So if he had succeeded and Emily allowed Victor to drink the poison, they pretty much would have been back on square one. Not to mention it would make Emily unlikable and not learn anything about letting go and moving on. That's the funny thing when it comes to love triangles though. People always ship the leads with the more interesting character without thinking about the context. Same thing with Phantom of the Opera. People want Christine to be with Erik because he's a tragic figure. And while he is sympathetic, he's still a murderer and pretty much acted like a creepy stalker towards Christine.

To be fair, Victor said the proposal was a mistake right from the start and when he met with Victoria again, he made it clear Emily was the other women, but she wouldn't listen. Like she deserved better in general, but it's got nothing to do with Victor. After all, she was already dead and he was not. I still love your reaction and the movie is one of my favorites 😁
@Shastasnow
@Shastasnow 8 месяцев назад
Emily did listen and came to terms with being the other woman. Victor agreed to marry her even after she said he would be better off with Victoria. If he heard that and took that as his moment to go, he stayed because he did not know what he wanted. Also, Victor and Victoria would only remain together briefly because their families are still poor. Unfortunately, that would only work well if he could make much money playing piano. The previous arrangement would be canceled, and they would have to find different families to support their kids. That is probably why they ended it so abruptly. haha
@LaBellesGrace
@LaBellesGrace 8 месяцев назад
@@Shastasnow Emily didn’t acknowledge that *she* was the other woman, until the end of the movie when she realised she was taking away Victoria’s dream of being married to him. Victor was going to stay in the Land of the Dead because Victoria was his only real reason to live, and since he believed she was marrying someone else without a care, he had no reason to go back. This is heavily supported by the deleted song Johnny Depp sang about Victor’s conflict before he decided to properly be with Emily. He genuinely loved Victoria, and only decided to marry Emily because he felt bad for her situation and wanted to be selfless for someone since everyone was unhappy, including himself: stuck right in the middle of the situations - at least down there he wasn’t judged and expected to be a certain way unlike with his parents, the Everglots or anyone above. Victoria and Victor still would’ve married in the end, because Victor’s family is the ones with money: the Van Dort’s came from new money, and wanted to be associated with the Everglot’s for status. Regardless, I think Victor and Victoria still would’ve found a way to stay together, because the point of their subtle arcs was disassociating from their parents and making their own choices. Tbh, I would’ve loved to see the chaos in the aftermath of Victor coming back, and the two set of parents being confused as heck about everything that happened lol. Victoria is technically widowed, so the *real* question instead of “team Emily or Victoria?” Should be did they marry right away because her parents desperately needed money, or did they have to wait a little while? As widows during that time were not allowed to marry right after until a year or so.

I agree! I think Victoria is the best choice for Victor as well. They may not know each other very well yet, there was an instant connection. And, y’know, Victor doesn’t have to die to marry Victoria. I also think Victoria is pretty defiant for a woman in her position. She rolls her eyes when quoting her mother’s teachings and she tried to hack her way out of her room to find Victor. I think there’s more to her than what’s shown in the movie.

Emily was not “just a rebound.“ She was someone, I believe, whom Victor genuinely liked (as a friend), cared about, and felt compassion for. No he was not _in love with_ her; but when he agreed to stay, it was *not* about him trying to make himself feel better in an attempt to get over Victoria. His own hopes were gone, there was nothing left for him to get back to; so he was attempting to at least extend a kindness to someone who had been deeply hurt and badly wronged. And he was fully prepared to stand by his word, even if it meant giving up an unexpected second chance to wed the girl of his dreams. -Yes, Emily deserved better than to be someone’s ‘sympathy bid’ (so to speak). But Victor was doing- and _would have_ done- the best he could by her. …That is no small thing. I agree though, that Victoria is the better match. In temperament, outlook, and personality, she and Victor are much more alike; counterparts, soulmates. Emily ideally would have done better with someone as vivacious and lively as herself.

In a lot of ways this film show's the dangers of extremism in relationships, going too far in one direction or the other can result in equally unpleasant circumstances. Emily represents one end of this spectrum and Victoria the other. I mean think about it...why DIDN'T Victor stick around after the rehearsal? He literally ran away, he escaped the church and went wandering in the woods. In his wandering, he is able to verbalize his fantasies, in which he has a much higher degree of control over his engagement and relationship with the people around him. He recites his vows perfectly (something he wasn't able to do in front of other people) and places a real wedding ring on a real (albeit dead) finger. He's only able to do this away from society (or at least the hyper-conservative society he lives in) and finds freedom in his escapism. Problem is, he is accosted by a dead woman claiming to be his wife. It's almost as if the fates are saying "Ok, you want to throw caution to the wind and abandon your life because things didn't go according to plan? How about THIS curveball?" He essentially curses himself, betrothed or affianced to a corpse, all because he didn't see the big picture of his situation. And what big picture is that? Well...he couldn't see beyond his wedding day, for some reason. He didn't see this beautiful woman who was obviously into him and shared some interests and was clearly fond of the idea of marrying him...all he could see was what the people around him expected him to do. Now, not to put it too bluntly, but his in-laws? They wouldn't be around much longer after the wedding. His parents? He's financially set and he inherits a business to manage. Long term, he and Victoria would have a life together that would be filled with love (or at the very least good companionship), a life that was financially viable, comfortable and private. Emily, on the other hand, represents what Victor THOUGHT he wanted...freedom, escapism, passion, romance and unfettered frivolity. She's very attractive for a dead woman, which was part of the point, I think...what better way to make death look attractive than to dangle Emily like a carrot in front of Victor? Her innate sexuality is evident throughout the film, kind of a virgin-whore complex made all the more tragic by the fact that she died in her wedding dress but BEFORE her wedding night. It is very possible that Emily died never knowing the touch of a man, which might have added to her curse...she was denied her consummation. She represents the life Victor THINKS he wants, or at least an approximation of it. The life he could have with her (afterlife?) would be full of drink, music, parties, fascinating creatures, his dog, freaking COLOR...all the things Emily probably thought would be a part of HER married life after her elopement with Barkis. HER curse was also self-inflicted, running off with someone she barely knew and trusting her escapist desire over caution and common sense. It may not have mattered who put a ring on her finger in the woods...it could have been anyone, so long as she escaped the limbo of her bad choices. Luckily, her line near the end about "you set me free" is true of most people in loving relationships, even if it's in relationships with themselves. Emily finds closure in learning what happened to her, and in letting Victor go, she finds peace and is able to move on. Victor will not repeat the same mistakes Emily made and Victoria will not let herself become her parents, mostly because she seized at least SOME agency through the film in trying to figure out what happened to Victor. Ultimately, the ultra-rigid methods of conservative living make you WISH you were dead, but BEING dead has it's limitations as well. Victor and Victoria find their balance between the two by finding balance in each other. I think Emily got a raw deal, sure...but she escaped, in her own way. Great vid! What's next?

I never knew it was unpopular to ship Victor and Victoria. I wouldn't say Emily is delusional but longing like ghost do. She wanted Victor for what he represents, a groom. It's obviously doomed for Emily but she's a good enough character you almost root for her even though that'd mean Victor would have to die for it to happen. He was already in love with someone else and was trying to do all he could to be someone worthy of marrying her and doing all he could to get back to her and be with her. He’s not a bad person in regard to that with Emily given the fact that she technically kidnapped him and tried to keep him in the land of the living against his will. For a marriage to be valid, both parties must be willing and disclose important information to one another in order to make a good decision. In Catholic circles, parishes still have someone ask the bride and groom if they are being coerced in any way. But yeah, the underworld guy was right too about the whole... being dead thing. Emily is quite vibrant, bubbly at some times, which feels like she has more character, but for Victor, I think Emily is a bit..too much? Not because she's a corpse, but Victor and Victoria just feels similar, they're both shy, very introverted, also have some common especially growing up with very strict parents. Of course Emily is more talented, fun to talk to, but for the life partner, I think Victor was meant to be Victoria and honestly, I really like Victoria's character too. She doesn't have that much screen time but she is also very brave like Emily, she'll do anything to save Victor, but also have the sweetness to it. Also it would've been very weird if Victor end up marrying Emily because THAT is necrophilia right there.

18:38 Oh, Emily's eyes aren't glittery (although I agree that her eyes look pretty when they're sparkling.) They were just tearing up because she's heartbroken about Victor's decision to die just so he can marry her because he's given up on Victoria... in other words, she loves him and she knows he cares about her, but she also knows she was second choice. So the best thing she can do for him is to let him go.

I think about that a lot too!! I would've loved to know Emily's back story because she seemed so interesting
@sharonspears-mandeville2369
Case in point: Most of her backstory leading to her death was known/sung by Bonejangles in "Remains of the day",noting her being a quote- _"Beauty from miles around"_ ,while one RU-vidr (I forgot her name,but she does theories on this platform here,nonetheless,so..?!) actually theorized that she was probably a long-lost relative to Victoria/Victoria's family,in a sense.. (Think about it,WHICH family in the movie do you think has money troubles? The Everglotts,obviously! That is, _Assuming that she was an Everglott relative-sister,cousin of Victoria's father that sort of thing honestly,really-or at least she was the older sister to Mrs.Everglott at the time_ and had taken/stolen her family's Jewels so in-order to marry/get murdered by Lord Barkus later on,so...? In theory,of course,so.) And it was.. _oddly said_ that, _in her living life/before her untimely death,she was actually a blonde woman beforehand,in actuality there so._

And Laika also did "Kubo and the Two Strings," which is the only Laika film that I've ever watched cause the others are too creepy for me. Victor's Mother (to me) looks a little like Aunt Sponge in the book "James and the Giant Peach." Don't know if this was intentional, but the butler at 1:59 looks like a penguin, more specifically THE Penguin from "Batman Returns," which would make sense if that was intentional because Tim Burton directed that film.

Victor was the embodiment of "right place, right time" in this movie. First, he was right there for Victoria's parents to quickly marry off to keep their lifestyle, then he happens to be practicing his vows in the spot Emily is and brings her back to life. Frankly they were both too good for Victor (though fair enough, Victor and Victoria did click and should have ended up together).

It's only alcohol spirits which make fires worse, things like wine or beer will put fires out
@rosegeyer7403
@rosegeyer7403 Год назад
On the wine dowsing that small fire: Wine dose not have an especially high alcohol content and even if it was rubbing alcohol thrown on a small flame (It would need to be proportionally a LOT of rubbing alcohol to flame ratio) it would still put out the fire. In order for it to be ignited it would need to be ether in a very thin liquid layer and would need to have a large portion of it becoming gaseous or it would just need to be gas with maybe some air born liquid particles. It's a matter of energy. Liquid most of the time must be energized into boiling (the point at which it becomes gas) and then must be energized further (a heat source or another compound must be introduced) in order for the substance to ignite into a flame or explosions.

This is one of my favorite movies and I rewatched it recently and I started to question all the same things you did about when Emily died and wouldn't people in the town recognize Barkis. So as I watched I did some googling and found that Emily died at age 19 the same age as Victor and Victoria and Barkis is 41 so 22 years have passed since Emily's death. Emily would have been decomposed by then not preserved as well as she is. I studied forensic anthropology in college. I think the movie is just meant to be enjoyed instead of looking closely at all of the inconsistent details. I still love the movie even though some things don't make sense.
