Is MGK's New Movie Actually Genius? 

This movie is literally the embodiment of "hey wouldn't it be cool if we did this" except they have no idea what they're doing

“A movie about adults obeying the law” is a perfect way to describe this comedy lmao.

The fact it starts with him googling what “mourning” means really says a lot about this movie right off the bat

I can't get over the fact that MGK named one character "Apple" and a separate character "Berry." Not "Barry," Pete Davidson's character name is "Berry."

They really captured the feel of an awkward middle school play in movie form and added weed.

I feel like this whole movie was written only because MGK recently found out “morning” and “mourning” are spelled differently and suddenly thought he was very clever.

No lie, I think his impression of Draco Malfoy looking for drugs is more entertaining than anything else he does in the movie.

"Good Mourning" is actually a great movie title. It could be a drama about a family dealing with a loss or it could be a murder mystery that involves a morning news show.

I think it'd be funnier if he got a text from a random number that just said "good mourning" and thought it was a threat and someone he knew was going to die. It'd still be stupid, but in a different way.

Naming your character “london clash” is the punk equivalent of naming your horror protagonist “Carrie Steven King”

He said in an interview that Megan sent him that text and he was actually trying to figure it out, while she was away for a few days. Instead of just chilling and waiting for her to come back, he actually made the movie.

"Good mourning" is actually a really good movie title, it was just used for the wrong movie

As a film major, this 100% feels like a student film just with a higher budget

Whats funny is that ryan higa made a funnier, better produced and acted youtube video about the confusion between the spelling of the words 7 years before this came out and it still holds up to this day

MGK is a perfect example of just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

The weird thing I felt while watching is that this movie seems to be trying to capture a quirky “life in your late teens, early 20s” atmosphere but everyone is, like, in their 30s. It comes off a little creepy and kind of sad.

as someone in theatre, his use of props and costumes in his self tape, his apparent lack of slate in the self tape, and his not having been preparing for this huge audition prior to it, are KILLING ME (will there be more things before the video is done? probably)

Usually when I see Danny review a bad movie I want to watch it just to laugh at it. I have 0 desire to see anything related to this movie ever again, and I think that’s an achievement all of its own

This is a horror movie, no a documentary...it's completely based on his real life and that's so scary to me 😂 he said that Megan sent that text irl and because her phone died and she had no signal during her flight he thought she was breaking up with him and he literally went through this process calling all his friends and asking their opinion...he said he "spiralled" and lost himself and panicked and lost control thinking she had left him. Spiralled......because of a simple typo.....Like I said, this is a horror documentary.

If I had a nickel for everytime danny reviewed a movie with a 0% rating that features Pete Davidson giving the least invested performance of his life I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

The thumbnail and title combo is a masterclass in story telling

It’d be wild if in one of those cliche movie where the main character does a big gesture to solve multiple conflicts, it somehow switches things. Like the climatic moment makes the director fall in love with them and the girlfriend give them a job. It’s not like it’s ever really logical the other way to beginning with.

honestly this just feels like one of those home movies you make as kids with your parents video camera for a few days in summer.....except with like....a much bigger budget lol

i interviewed MGK one time for an internship i was doing and the publication i was interviewing him for was based in Cleveland, OH where he (and I) grew up and he got way too excited ab it and proceeded to try to bond over Cleveland for the entirety of the interview no matter what questions i asked him

Stoner films were funny back in the day because 1) they were made by comedians/actors and 2) even though it was illegal for the most part, it was still relatable in an unspoken way. Like a “yeah we all know someone like that because we all smoke occasionally”. Etc. But MGK really brought the real experience of hanging out with a ston3r while you’re sober. It’s super boring, it’s like watching someone fight a nap. Also he was a low-rent Paulie Shore in this, which is super sad in and of itself.

This makes me realise I'm too hard on myself with my creative writing. Celebrities write stuff like this and think "Yep, the world needs to see this".

Pete spelled his name out so we would see it was spelled Berry like the fruit, and not Barry like the traditional name. Which I think is the best part of the whole movie. Berry is a great name when it's spelled like the fruit.

Honestly that bit with the urn and smoking weed to fill it back with ashes would have been pretty funny in a stoner comedy from 2005. Like a college kid is going home to his family (or to visit his gf's family with her) for the holidays (Christmas or even a summer at a family vacation) and everyone makes a point of how "even though grandma died it's so nice she could still be with us all" then shenanigans ensue and the ashes fly out the window and the college kid goes to smoke a ton and gets super high right before the extended family come and they have a big dinner.

When I saw the first scene, I thought this could be kind of interesting. I expected some kind of dark humour movie that tries to make jokes about how the mc tries to handle that his girlfriend committed suicide. I thought the "Good Mourning" meant that she hopes he gets through losing her. My first thoughts were that it was a risky idea but, if it was well done, it could have pretty strong emotional moments while still being a solid dark humour comedy. Then I remember it was a MGK movie.

Danny’s critiques are so right on. Thinking smoking weed is somehow badass or subversive when it’s literally a legal and government regulated aspect of most states. And the opening scene feels like such a simultaneous rip off of every 80s comedy with the 1st person omniscient narration and then every 90s/00s teen comedy with the weed centric lines. I really hate to say it, but there’s something weird and profoundly unfunny about a bunch of ppl in their 30s and 40s acting like teenagers.

Everything I know about MGK has been learned against my will

From Cody Ko fainting into his bowl of cereal to being paralyzed in a hospital with his “girlfriend”, MGK’s reaction to everything in this movie really is just “Wow. That just happened.”

I really like it when the plot of the movie is caused by a minor inconvenience that could’ve easily been solved at the start

MGK ruined Megan’s rise. I was rooting for her after she exposed how Hollywood executives treated her, even at such an early age. How they only typecasted her as the “hot girl” and how she wanted to show her talent by taking more serious roles. And then…she plays a hot girl in MGK’s movie. Gag.

The main protaganist making better facial expressions than RU-vidrs do in their thumbnails just shows how genius this movie actually is.

I mean we all have some crazy movie ideas sometimes... he just has the cash to actually make it. I once had the idea of a movie of a family living a normal life, then they have a car crash and the movie ends.. cause you know .. life ^^ Probably was high at the time of that idea too Edit: duude i haven't seen the last scene lmaoo

with movies like this, i always think back to when it was pointed out to me that people think stoner comedies are easy to make and that because it’s a stoner movie, it doesn’t matter if you get high while making it. but classic stoner movies like the ones that came from Cheech and Chong were filmed with them almost completely sober and had a lot of work put in.
