*Tomato Translation went to Mother 1 + 2, not NES.

Yeah, but the 25th anniversary edition (which isn't that good, don't play lol) revised the Tomato translation for NES. Someone isolated the script and got rid of the other changes. It just feels more natural to me

I prefer this one over Mother 2 as well. It rubs me the wrong way when people dumb it down to, 'Mother 2 is just a remake of this title.' Mother 2 was just too easy, and recycled a lot of Mother 1's OST. I'm just impressed with how good this game is for the NES.

agreed, i played the gba translated version. Had the easy ring on, and it was a breeze with all characters lvl. 50+

The gba version has better movement mechanics too.

It was based on a movie of the same name, and Capcom tried to remake it but since the name is owned by some other company, it became Resident Evil.

Its inspiration and ambition is admirable but the actual gameplay is pretty annoying, yes.

The music is great, so is some of the conceptual stuff I suppose but i never want to touch the game again lol.

Grachtnakk I feel like that applies to games like this as well as Castlevania II and Legend of Zelda II. They had a lot of ambition but just the limitations and lack of experience of that time makes it so they don’t really hold up today, despite being very ahead of their time.

You really have to go out of your way to only have Lloyd join Ninten. He's pretty useful in the early game at least if you give him a boomerang right away. Late game Lloyd pretty much sums up to stocking up on Super Bombs for one shotting all enemies on screen.

Definitely agree. FF is a broken mess, even for an NES game. Only the 3rd game is good. Mother (and the DQ series) are both far superior in every way. It's not nearly as frustrating, to be honest.

Earthbound is a sequel to Mother/EB0, but in kind of an indirect way. Most of the characters are different and have no relation to the EB0 characters, but the villain is the same (albeit in a very, very different form than he was in EB0 and it's kind of vague exactly how or why he changed)

Rick K. No your not. I wanna love these games. The whole vibe and style seems so unique and refreshing... but then u actually play them and u realize they're just bad Dragonquest clones with a quirky coat of paint. Great ideas, but a consistently flawed execution.

Earthbound has a rough start for the first several hours before you get your first party member. After you get your party together the game becomes a lot more manageable and the unique battle mechanics become more relevant. The main joy of the game for me comes from all the memorable interactions with NPCs.

I think it's an aquired taste kind of game, the game really provokes a sense of nostalgia and wholesomeness of the time that was my childhood, the 90's. It takes me on a strange coming of age story and while some parts are stronger than other parts and the pacing is not as good as say Chrono trigger of Final Fantasy 6 it's still unique and interesting. The combat is it's biggest flaw it works and has some nice features like low lvl foes running from and the counting down hp meter that allows you to save party members it also comes with it's biggest flaws, having to ressurect them one by one withdrawing money from the bank etc. It's is not a perfect game by any means and it shows it age but it is most certainly unique in it's overal theme and feel. This game together with Breath of Fire II are both flawed but great games from the 16 bit era.

MultiTarded ummm, are you stupid? People just said that it's pacing is horrendous. It can look like the greatest game of all time, but if the gameplay itslef is holding the game back, then it has a major problem in it's mechanics

Richter Belmont it's about standard for 80s and early 90s JRPGs, honestly. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, they all pretty much have those same qualities. Mother changes it up in terms of presentation in a good way, but if you don't like turn-based combat, you won't like Mother. Also, many things that are annoying now were standard and accepted then. It hasn't aged well, but that doesn't make it a bad game.

DejaVoodooDoll it's not a question of old or new for me. I just dont get the hype (although small) to this first instalment. There are some major flaws, but it's like you all said: it's a product of it's time. I get it, I just dont like it at all. By the way, Earthbound is an excellent improviment (I love it). As for Wizard of Oz and old music, I freaking love it for like IoI

Richter Belmont Bad? No. This plays like every other jrpg from the 80s. Grinding, Lack of direction, High random encounter rate. The game is set back simply by hardware limitations. If you know the whole story, it really is an amazing game. You invade an abandoned factory and fight a mad scientist, just to get some bottle rockets. You find a tank and use it to battle two giant robots on a mountain. You enter a zoo and battle wild animals just to take down a starman who's causing them to go nuts. Your first fight is a frickin lamp. The intent is there but there's only so much you can do on NES. A lot of people forget that part. Mother 1 came out on NES. How many NES games can you say that you'd actually play right now? The game isn't long, it's about 8 hours honestly. The lenth in gameplay comes from the enemies that appear at random and later on some can destroy you instantly. To be honest, I hope they remake this game, the story really needs no tinkering, its fine, what they can do is have more dialogue and interactions between characters; the game wont be a random encounter...so there's no need to worry about that. But I would love more battle themes. And grinding will need to go, while I dont mind fighting enemies, others do. If they want, they can have different difficulties (Hard is 1989 mode, Normal is Remastered mode). I really just want more people to enjoy this game. *TEXT WALL* TL;DR: The game has so much potential and charm. Please Nintendo, remaster this...

the randomness of your stat boosts during level up was also strange. I remembering cheesing it with an emulator and continuing to reload. Sometimes you get 14hp, sometimes you get 1hp.

Difficult to play today? It's nothing compared to Phantasy Star II.

@@Walczyk The sequel was the same with the semi-random stat boosts. So were some other J-RPGs, ones that I can think of off the top of my head are Phantasy Star II and Metal Max 2.

I never understood this. Evil Dead 2 is clearly a continuation and sequel of Evil Dead. It rehashes the first one within the first 10 Minutes and picks up exactly at where we left the first movie. Yeah the summary of the first film was reshot and dumped down (for licensing reasons) (you don't see the the friends and so on.) But it doesn't contradict the first movie. Same goes for Army of Darkness. Here a reshots as well. So if you watch all in order there are some minor incontinuetys, but overall it's one Trilogy and one Story. Even Raimi said so. And you can see it clearly in Ash VS. Evil Dead, where are some hints to Evil Dead 1 and even one character reappears. And I think it's so obvious, but everyone talks about Evil Dead 2 as a Remake. Or Soft Reboot. But I get what you mean, about Mother 1 and 2.

The Mother 3 fan translation is very good

That's the only reason I bought it, I never played it though. Eventually caved and added the Mother 3 fan translation to my modded 3DS

Play the Mother 1+2 Fan Translation and use the Easy Ring, it's way better than the EB0.

Among nes rpgs its definitely the most approachable

It’s one of the most approachable NES games, and yet it still feels dated and obtuse.

I’d play Earthbound Mother 2 (the one with Ness) it’s awesome! Once you beat that, try Mother 3 (with Lucas). I may have to play the rom/emulator and the English translation first however.

SNES drunk rpgs are such a committment a shame cuz many of them only get good when you are halfway through. thanks to you im finishing lufia legrbd return,very nice ride i loved the characters.

I played this rom hack some time ago and it not only makes the game look better, but also gives a world map and is easier to play, which I liked.

I even didn't play the SNES Earthbound, which never came out in Europe. If I start, should I start with this Mother patch and move on to Earthbound afterwards? After this, my plan is to play Toby Fox's famous Earthbound romhack. So far, I played Toby Fox's game Undertale on pc and liked it much. Which got my attention back to these oldschool games.

Earthbound would be easier to get into and is more enjoyable in my opinion.

I am sure it is, but story wise it would make more sense to start with the first one right? But still not sure if I want it. Especially because it takes a lot of time (and nerves). So, you would recommend to play Earthbound first?

Purists will rip you apart for even mentioning 25th anniversary edition, but I managed to play through the entire game this way, and really enjoyed myself. The graphics are a lot easier on the eyes, but removing the grinding is what really did it for me. Was really surprised at how good the story was, considering how uninspired early RPG stories of the time seem to be.
