Honestly, in the last few years I've just been falling in love with the TurboGrafix library. Ys blew me away when I first played it, Bonk is just pure fun, I've even started to discover new favorites. It's like a whole world of classic games I missed out on, it's like finding a hidden box of treasure

Devil's Crush is easily one of the greatest pinball games ever made. That soundtrack is absolutely godlike and the visuals are outstanding. It's also on the Genesis under the name "Dragon's Fury" if you don't have a Turbografx...

@@CONYOADAMS the updated english HD rerelease on PSP, and now PS4 with the requiem collection, are acceptable as well. it's just the TG-16 game that is too over hyped and overrated considering all the problems involved. being Japan only release is a huge problem. plus the fact it's CD based. i never could get it working on an emulator. it took me until 2020 with the TG16 Mini until i could actually play the dang thing legitimately. even on real hardware, its a nightmare from what I've heard. there is the Super CD, the CDRom 2 squared, the "Arcade CD plus alpha omega pie x the square root of the radius", plus the different System Cards required for specific games. it's just an absolute nightmare trying to deal with this antiquated complex hardware, that's breaking down and failing constantly. even CDs themselves don't last forever, and Disc Rot is becoming common with these old systems. Snes games just play easily and flawlessly. so simple they can even be emulated on 3DS eshop. the simplicity and ease of use puts the Snes version Dracula X over the top, despite being technically limited compared to the TG16 game.
@nunyabaznus7851
@nunyabaznus7851 2 года назад
@Zodiac Griller i was specifically referring to physical media. yes, anyone with a PS4 should definitely just buy "Requiem Collection", and play the updated english translation of Rondo. But, when it comes to the PC Engine CD, the whole thing is an absolute nightmare. scratched discs, bad laser lenses, non working hardware, compatibility issues, the fact its in Japanese, so you cant understand the dialogue. Even emulation was a nightmare back in the 2000's. TG-16 emulators didn't even run CD based games. i waited over 10 years to play Rondo of Bl**d, on the Wii virtual console in 2011 finally after years of trying and failing. Dracula X just works, on any emulator, on any hardware. that's all im saying.

As a little girl the Turbografx was always really mysterious to me. British gaming magazines and shows would occasionally mention it, but it never saw an official release here so was a pricey and niche system for import gamers only. The Neo Geo was similarly mysterious, but I'm not sure whether that was released over here or not, either way it was an absurdly expensive console few people would get to play.
@zayaannashrid1374
@zayaannashrid1374 6 лет назад
The Neo Geo, as far as I know, is basically a home arcade. So it was crazy expensive. The TurboGrafx was just unlucky though. It launched before the SNES and Genesis which blew away anything else at the time

The UK newsagents in my small town would import EGM and Gamepro magazines bizarrely, so I used to stare in awe at the screenshots of Turbografx games, until one day my friend took me round to his friend who had imported a PC Engine of all things! That was the only time I ever got to play on an original system, the game that stood out for me was called Gunhead, only years later did I discover that Gunhead is in fact Blazing Lazers! =) And Yeah, Neo Geo game prices lol!!

Hi pixel girl :) what's your favorite game
@DissociatedWomenIncorporated
@DissociatedWomenIncorporated 6 лет назад
Zayaan, I do get _why_ the Neo Geo was so expensive, it was an incredibly impressive machine hardware-wise that was literally arcade spec since it was a modified version of SNK's standard arcade platform, yeah 😊 I gotta say though, after delving into emulation I'm disappointed. Not in the capabilities of the machine, but in the fact 99% of the game library appears to consist of sports games or scrolling shooters (none of which that I've seen grabbed my attention as much as my most beloved shooter series/games, Thunder Force, Gradius/Parodius, and GG Aleste II, really should look into the other Alestes). The PCE fairs a little better, most of its game library hasn't so far gripped me (again far too many generic shooters) but I'm far more interested in diving into the part of its game library that strays outside shooter territory. Or, even, discovering truly excellent PCE/Neo Geo shooters! But my first shooter was Thunder Force IV, so there's some stiff competition in my brain 😄 Live long and prosper, my fellow gamer nerd! 🖖
@DissociatedWomenIncorporated
@DissociatedWomenIncorporated 6 лет назад
Zenithfilms, you have actually TOUCHED the holy console relic? Le gasp! 😂 That is genuinely pretty cool though. My current favourite PCE game is only a "by default" thing, Dynastic Hero, since I adored its Mega Drive counterpart (Wonder Boy in Monster World) as a little girl.

Don't you mean Ikari Warriors, not Imari Warriors? But yeah, Bloody Wolf is a great game for the PCE/TG16. The port was only one-player (unlike the arcade machine) and only gave you one life but added more of a plot as well as inventory items and health upgrades and reordered most of the stages after stage 2 and added a new, open-ended area.

graphics and sound as good as the snes, yet came out 4 years earlier. The problem was it was too expensive for the US and Europe. like the neo geo. The expensive TurboGFX did well in Japan since in 1987 Japan was relatively rich. But odd to think that at the same time Amigas and Ataris were selling well in Europe at the same high prices. Europe consumers were more tuned into computers, they didn't really know what consoles were until the cheaper MD and SNES came.

Man, played a bunch of these over the years thanks to re-releases on the Wii and PS3 (on the Japanese PSN, Sony had PCE titles as the third line of "Classics" alongside their digital PSOne and PS2 games for download. I swear, making a fake JP region account for that system should've been mandatory - so much great stuff available to play thanks to that having no region lock). Always a treat to see someone show some love for titles like Shockman, Lords of Thunder and Soldier Blade :) Great list, dude!

I'll post recommendations for other games here: TurboGrafx-16: Cratermaze - A puzzle game in which each stage consists of a maze filled with various enemies and items. The player must collect all of the keys on the stage to open the exit door while avoiding or eliminating enemies. The primary method of dealing with enemies is to dig holes; if an enemy walks into a hole, they are momentarily trapped and the player can then fill the hole to kill the enemy. Final Lap Twin - A racing game in which there are two basic modes: Grand Prix and Quest. Grand Prix consists of a multi-race points championship, while quest mode functions like a racing RPG and has the player travel from town to town finding challenges and winning them to gain money and special items to improve the player's car. As the player moves around the game world, which is presented in an overhead view, the player will encounter random challenges, much like random battles in a traditional RPG. Side Arms - A shoot-'em-up in which the player controls a Lieutenant, named Henry, and is armed with crude weaponry and protective jump-suits. The player must save the earth from the mercenary invaders of Bozon by reaching Bozon’s territories in order to wipe out its forces hidden in caverns and lurking in underground seas, before destroying the main invasion ship. Timeball - A puzzle game in which each level is composed of a number of tiles and each of them has a part of a pipe (straight or angular) on it - except one which is just a black hole. On one tile, a red ball starts rolling and all tiles it rolls through become blank. The goal of each level is to let the ball roll through all pipe parts without meeting the hole or a blank tile, and the player has to ensure this by moving the tiles around. TurboGrafx-CD: Buster Bros. - An action game in which the goal is to destroy the balloons which bounce around the playfield, and this is accomplished by shooting hooks which travel upwards, and blow up any balloon they touch. Depending on their size, they either split on two smaller ones, or evaporate if they're at their minimum size. Apart from balloons, some levels also have barriers that have to be destroyed with the hooks, as since they often block access to the balloons. Cosmic Fantasy 2 - A role-playing game set in a mixed sci-fi and medieval world. Player-controlled characters can learn and use various offensive and healing spells; however, enemies are restricted to physical attacks. Characters join and leave the party frequently, as dictated by the plot; the party may contain up to four active combatants. Story progression and overworld exploration is linear; dungeons are usually fairly complex and maze-like. Final Zone II - A shoot-'em-up in which the player controls a soldier on some levels and vehicle on other levels. As a soldier the player dons a "New Age Power Suit" and has a choice of playing several different characters, though it is only a one player game. The object of the game is to fight an enemy army led by "ZOD,", and killed some of the player's commando friends, and there are various armaments and shields the player can pick up along the way. Lords of the Rising Sun - A strategy game set in 12th century Japan, where, after the player's father has been murdered, the player sets out on a quest to become Shogun to restore the honor of their family. Troops will be moved through the big map of Japan and fight enemies in action sequences, such as a Gauntlet-like fortress attack or defending against a Ninja assassin. If two troops collide, a battle might ensue in which the player will have to use all of their strategical wits to guide their men to victory. Splash Lake - A puzzle game in which each round consists of a single screen play area composed of tiles suspended over a lake. The player controls an Ostrich that can crack the tiles and cause them to fall into the water. The goal is to use this ability to make all the bad guys on the screen fall into the water.

The Turbografx never came to my country back in the day, but I would read about it in EGM and Gamefan. Years later I have played alot of the games through an emulator. For me Dragons Curse was the best overall game on the Turbografx, and as much as I loved Blazing Lazers (Gunhead) I liked Soldier Blade a little bit more. SB had awesome Hu Card music too :) The Arcade card made some incredible ports on the Super CD2 as well and I just feel if more games were released in the west the Turbo-Duo could have give the Genesis and Snes a run for their money. Rondo of Blood is also an awesome game. Great music! Thanks for this video :) Any chance you could do videos on other gaming systems like FM Towns Marty X68000 etc?

Nice to see the Turbografx getting some love on your channel ! As for titles left out to spite me (^_^), the Turbo CD edition of Loom (Lucasfilm adventure classic) and Compile's Spriggan (shmup similar to MUSHA) are also well worth checking out. Additionally Ys IV has a full fan translation, and is different (and widely considered superior) to the SNES version.

My guy! This is the comment I was looking for! I literally had all three of these games, and final lap twin was such a fun play through for me! I searched this completely blacked out dark cave for hidden items in the over world map for hours finally finding some racing glove upgrade haha! Beating that game was so satisfying because it was the only game of its kind. An RPG racing game?! I was blown away.

That sure is a killer selection! The only essential game you've missed was Dragon's Curse, which is Hudson's *superior* version of Wonder Boy III, but yeah, other than that one these are pretty much all the must play titles for beginners in the TurboGrafx's library, but of course there are tons more great games on the system that people should get to after playing these... Some of them include the fighting games on the system, sure the PCE wasn't exactly known for its fighters, but it has a fair few which are pretty competent, if not outright great! There's obviously Street Fighter II, which is good in any of its 16 bit console incarnations and you can't go wrong with any of them, and then there's Asuka 120% Maxima Burning Fest which might just be the best fighter on the system, even with Street Fighter in there! The thing about Street Fighter and Asuka 120% that sets them apart from the other fighters on the system is that neither of them requires the Arcade Card (which was an expensive 2MB RAM expansion for the CD unit), whereas pretty much every other (good) fighter on the system does... But still, 2 extra megs mean that they could make near arcade-quality fighters on the system! Which include World Heroes 2, Ryuuko no Ken (Art of Fighting), Garou Densetsu 2 and Garou Densetsu Special, all of which are pretty damn close to their Neo Geo counterparts and totally wipe the floor with their SNES and MD counterparts! Other than Fighters the system also has the best version of Cotton, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Star Parodier (Star Soldier's answer to Parodius), some neat Sega ports like Space Harrier, Outrun and After Burner II (The latter is perhaps the best 16 bit version), and of course, the Konami shooters, you know the ones, Gradius 1 and 2 (the 2nd one is on CD and it RULES!), Detana TwinBee (This game is Beautiful!), Parodius Da and Salamander...

hmmm..i might have to disagree with u here senpai....the tg16 version of wonderboy 3 was no better than the sega master system version. honestly i was disappointed only in the sense that i expected the tg16 to blow away the sms version. as far as the sega system goes....wonder boy 3 is a defining system title, on the short list of best titles for sega. on the tg16, it loses alot of luster and is honestly a mid tier port. although we disagree on this small issue..the third paragraph of ur post is nothing but truth!!!!! i would argue that space harrier is better on the tg16 (since the genesis version is a weak sauce SEQUEL to the original) and as far as i am concerned after burner on the tg16 is definitive for the era (genesis version has downright broken controls). arguments can be made for either version of outrun...but the tg16 take is an admirable effort. Gradius, twinbee, the og parodiuus, and salamander are nothing short of AWESOME ports. i might give the salamander NES version the win for nostalgia and some extras thrown here and there...but the TG16 version of that game is NOTHING to scoff at and is a competent port and arguably the choice for shooter heads in the sense that its slightly the fastest version in terms of game speed. Def the version for hardcore score peeps.
@Michirin9801
@Michirin9801 6 лет назад
While it's true that Wonder Boy 3 is one of the better SMS games (if not the best) that doesn't mean the TG-16 version isn't superior... Sure, the graphics may not be that big of a step up, and the gameplay is pretty much exactly the same, but the TG-16 has 2 major advantages over the SMS original: It runs at 60 fps whereas the SMS original runs at 30 fps (25 in PAL regions) which means the Turbo version scrolls a bit smoother and is slightly more responsive, and the soundtrack in the Turbo version is the best one by a wide margin! And that is including the HD remake's soundtrack! Heck, the sound in general is far superior on the Turbo, for one it doesn't cut out half of the instrumentation whenever sound effects need to be played (all thanks to it having more sound channels) and the sound effects themselves are a lot more varied and interesting-sounding! They can use a lot of different waveforms to synthesise their sound effects with after all... Honestly, in my opinion, the only reason anyone would ever have pick the SMS version over the TG-16 one is nostalgia... The only other argument I've seen in the SMS's favour was "The character designs are better", which is a subjective thing that I can respect, but even that argument is flawed, because you know, the overwhelming majority of the character designs are exactly the same between the two versions, except they have more shading on the TurboGrafx so they look better in there... Not to discredit the SMS original, as it is still worth playing, but calling it "better than the TG-16 one" is just not right... To be fair, the whole "better sound" argument is just as subjective as the character designs one, but that doesn't change the fact that sound effects don't clip-out the instrumentation in the Turbo version...

With people no longer able to add Wii points to their account anymore, Nintendo should really let people select whatever game they want, regardless of points, since the shop's going to close next year anyway. That just shuts people out who are unaware of what's happening with the Wii, but with the Switch being a big deal nowadays, what do you expect, I guess.

The only complaint I have about Ninja Spirit is if you got powered up it could get a bit choppy or flicker. That game could really do with a modern remake with some beefy graphics, a lot of other games are being redone (see: Ghosts and Goblins).
