Frank Ozaki also 99.9% percent of injuries on the one wheel is because people don’t know how to fall. It’s like they want to fall on their face? You have to roll into your fall and people just try to outrun their momentum and they can’t, you don’t even have to have experience falling or be a skateboarder. I thought it was common sense to roll but apparently not. I don’t have a lot experience falling but whenever I do I roll and I’ve never gotten hurt

There are a couple things about his foot placement that contributed to the fall. #1 His front toe was hanging off very far, meaning a lot of weight towards the toe side rail. When he hit the bump, that weight caused the board to tip immediately towards the toe side rail, and since the bump was big enough to cause his foot to become airborne, the foot moved even further until it was completely off the edge. #2 His foot angle was extremely perpendicular to the direction of travel, so when it landed on the ground it was basically impossible for him to run it out, because it is much more difficult to run sideways than it is to run forward. The CK fall seems to have had a completely different cause: it looks like he tried to jump off the board (whereas your son tried to stay on), but forgot to jump off with both feet, and since his front foot stayed on the sensor pad, his board kept going and dragged him into a split. When you accidentally hit a big bump that you didn't see, you either need to use your leg muscles to keep your feet on the board, or jump clean off with both feet and run it out.

I ride an e-surfing Leiftech. 2+4 wheels. Exactly the same problem of falling off and damage to the body. Challenge is to keep wearing wrist guards, elbow guards and Helmet - even when one is competent. Being older (56) is best. We oldies are paranoid about hurting ourselves. It takes longer to heal and is more embarrassing in the office. Oldies do not mind riding slow. Safe riding!

Sorry to see your son hit the asphalt. I have just seen too many examples of this and I experienced it myself on my Ranger X1, a total unexpected wipeout. I think telling people that a helmet is all you need is honestly a disservice. (which is what Future Motion says) I almost always have head, wrist, elbow and knee protection on every ride. No, I didn't always do that in the past and yes, it can be a pain in the ass at first but like most things, it just becomes a habit quickly and you don't even think about it. If I was not fully geared when I had that 16-17mph crash my injuries would have been much, much worse.

The worst part is that drivers rarely face any consequences, at least to the magnitude of the transgression. In my area we had a prominent unicyclist who got hit riding on the proper area of a road, wearing a safety vest, and using lights. Truck ran him over and no charges or anything being brought on the blatantly negligent driver. The way of the world I suppose.

I'm not particularly squeamish about accidents and injuries, but I feel like something kept me from watching this instinctively. It sounds weird but the only way you can avoid an injury is to always expect to get injured. Padding up, watching for obstacles, and not taking your skill for granted seems to be the best deterrent as long as you don't get so worried that you never ride again.

I'm squeamish for sure; never broken a bone in my 39 years. Pretty lucky considering the couple of really dramatic bike falls I have had, blood and bruises but never "hospital bad." As a very new OneWheel owner (1 week, 24 miles so far) these stories make me feel anxious, but I appreciate the framing of the injuries that will commonly occur for other very popular sports like skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, cycling, and so on. When you do anything physical you risk injury. The more exciting or thrilling the activity, the greater the risk (generally). The best hedge against it is WEAR YOUR GEAR and don't push your limits too far. No-risk activities are boring. Risk is exciting. Just don't be stupid; prepare your mind and body.

I've put 80 miles on my XR and I love it. But I'm typing now while wearing a cast helping to heal a scaphoid fracture in my left wrist. Overconfidence. I had been riding all day and was heading home. I noticed that I had an empty street, open road and smooth pavement in front of me. I was felling really good about the ride, living the float life. It was the perfect opportunity to push it and see just how fast I could go. At 17 mph I had a nose dive and ate pavement. Hard. I was wearing a helmet, a fact that certainly prevented more serous injury. It all happened in a 5 minute second. I tried to take a step - run it out - but at that speed it was futile. I went for a tuck and roll but just landed on my left side and slid into the asphalt for about 15 ft.. I hopped up and went to the side of the road to collect myself. It was a gnarly grind. I ended up with a radial fracture of the left elbow, bruised a few ribs and the wrist fracture. I have been in a cast since the end of May, 2019. I'm healing up and have begun to ride again. I was always a very chill rider - I used to skateboard and mountain bike and am no stranger to speed, crashes and getting busted up. That said a Onewheel fall is a different beast. I never felt the pushback when I had my accident. I had felt it before and responded accordingly. But ths time it was just the nosedive - seemingly no warning. It was an eye opener to the reality of this machine. Be careful out there folks. I still absolutely love the feeling of riding my Onewheel and have no intention of giving it up. But Jimmy is right - take your time, build up to the big stuff and if you're going to push it prepare for the slide not the ride. At the very least put a helmet on your noggin' - ALWAYS - and seriously consider wrist guards. The Onewheel is amazing and perfect for city commuting, around town cruising and capturing a sense of freedom and fun that cannot be experienced on any other medium. I love it and I'm not backing down. But I I'm sticking to the chill and float mentality. And the Onewheel does that best - IMO. Float on friends! Thanks for the vid Jimmy - and quick healing for your son!

That was a nasty fall. Your son took it like a champ. Everything has risks. The Onewheel has more of them compared to traditional sports, but is a lot of fun. The Onewheel is no exception.

@aaron-bieber
@aaron-bieber 3 года назад
@@freshlycharged The fun comes from the risk, right? There are plenty of no-physical-risk activities that are fun, like video games, or reading, but if you're using your body there is always some chance of injury. The more thrilling the activity, the more risk there is. It's helpful to think about the extremes. Skydiving, for instance, is very thrilling but the risk of injury goes all the way up to instant death. That's the reason why the training, equipment inspection, backup systems, and procedures are so involved; to mitigate the risk of instant death. Your risk on a OneWheel is tied to how skilled you are and your riding environment. A helmet is non-negotiable, but I'm 29 miles in so I wear everything. Honestly, at my age, I'd rather spend one extra minute putting on some pads than weeks recovering from broken joints. I need these joints!

2 weeks after I got my board I was riding down a hill in my town, speed limit on the road is 20 and me on the path next to it was passing the cars. Board nose dived hard, broke the fall with my hands and knees and rolled about 10 feet. My palms where scraped to the flesh, knees were scraped, shoulder gashed, and ankles missing skin. In my adrenaline I ran to my board which was in the middle of the road and hoped back on to ride to the park and sit down at a bench. I was dripping blood everywhere and I’m lucky I didn’t hit my head. Luckily my brother was at the park and we drove home right away. Didn’t go the the hospital, just cleaned out the wouldn’t with rubbing alcohol and let them heal on their own. Since then and push back scares the hell out of me and I’ve resorted to more skill oriented riding like spins, flat ground tricks and small jumps. The way I’ve been able to combat bumps in paths is to keep a lower stance on the board, it helps stay over the Onewheel when it hops up over the bump. Awesome video, loving the content since it represents the majority of us riders which are cruisers instead of the Slydogs, Jeff McCoskers, and Bodi Harrison’s on the Onewheel community.

Feel bad for him and glad he is ok. Elbow pads would have helped big time because the sharp edges of the elbow bone make it so that a fall can take a cut to the all the way to the bone almost a certainty. The more confident we become, we start shedding protective gear. So far, my minimum gear is a helmet, wrist guards and elbow pads. I should still be wearing knee pads, but got confident enough to shed those. The ones I bought are too bulky, but now I have been thinking I should be wearing knee pads again, but buy smaller, less bulky ones. So minimum gear for me should be helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads and smaller knee pads. That gear is for the unexpected bumps and grooves that can take down the best of riders. Thanks for the video.

I feel like this is important to say. I got my XR about 3 weeks ago. I have had two falls for two different reasons. The first one was the second day I had the board. I was out practicing in front of my house. I had done tons of research and was fully aware of what push-back was. I tried to accelerate up a slight hill too quickly. I am a big guy at about 270 lbs, and the acceleration I was demanding from the board meant that the board had no torque left to give me any push-back. The balancing cut out before I knew I was over doing what the board could do. Beware push-back yes, but also know that there are situations you can put the board in where it cannot give you push-back, or any other feedback, before the board's limits are exceeded. this is something that didn't occur to me during all of my research, but I sure have the respect for it now. I now do things gradually so that the board has time to give me the feedback it can. It has to be a symbiotic relationship between the board and the rider. That is what I learned from the first fall. That being said I love the thing, and I don't think any fall could make me stop riding. thanks Jimmy for the video.

This is exactly the type of spill I took on my onewheel XR on May 06, 2019 except I hit an un-noticed frost heave on a paved trail. I was going around 20KPH when I came off my board... my leading foot folded under my body and the force of my ankle bending under my body resulted in breaking my fibula a few inches below my knee, and really messed things up in my ankle joint. 2 months off work, 6.5 weeks in a cast / air boot, screws, plate and hardware in my ankle / leg. Prior to the spill I LOVED the onewheel, but man it happened so fast. I have come off my board twice, and both times it was unexpected and quick. I watched all the videos on nose dives, what gear to get, what protective equipment to buy. I bought helmet, wrist guards, skate shoes, knee pads, fender, fangs wheels, grab handle, waterproof kit, float pads, side protectors, ect.... did not matter. Also, both times I really hit my hip hard into the pavement, short of hockey pads not sure what to wear to protect the hips. Some people talk about "running out" if you come off the board, well with your feet perpendicular to the direction you are going I am not sure how that's even possible, at least it was not possible for me. I want to ride it again, but I still feel and hear the bone break when I think about it. Life is about risk, have fun but be prepared to get banged up.

Chris, If you do not already own a EUC please try riding one. I'm 50 years old and own 3 one wheels a 4 EUC's. In my opinon the EUC's are 5 times safer than my one wheels. You are correct about the one wheel rider is at a disadvantage due to perpendicular stance. Where as the EUC rider in a normal more straight forward stance in the event one has to react to unit abruptly shuting off. I have never nose dive or fallen off on my EUC's for two reason, 1 EUC's have a higher degree of safety warnings alarms, 2 The pedal height of most EUC's are the height of a stair step or a curb, I feel as though when I'm performing tricks and have to abort from wheel I just step off. I even have time to catch the EUC from crashing. If you reside in the Denver metro area I would be more than willing to let you borrow one of my EUC's.

a bump in the road i didn't see when it started getting dark out made me loose my balance and fall hard on my shoulder a couple weeks ago. dislocated it and fractured the top of my humerus along with some major road rash. and i wasn't even going that fast. worst i've ever bee hurt in my life, but despite that, i got back on my board with my dislocated shoulder and arm bleeding from the road rash and managed to get myself home. parents took me to the ER that night. my XR is still worth every penny though. call me crazy, but i'm getting right back on it when i'm finally healed up

If you wear the proper gear for the first 500-1000 miles, you can basically avoid all injuries. When wearing my g-forms i have had ZERO road rash or injury to any part of my body covered in pads. (i got a shoulder injury from a high speed nose dive, but had i not been wearing pads my elbows and knees would have gotten wrecked)

Really great video on being safe while riding. It's awesome you were so close to a station where you could get first aid. I might add in the video that anyone on a ride should bring a small first aid kit like you might keep in your car. Some band-aids, antiseptic, and probably some quickclot gauze or similar product patches for any particularly nasty wounds.

Just took my first nose dive accelerating up an incline. Big gash in my leading elbow and road rash on my hands. Elbow pads and a helmet at minimum now. They need to build fangs into the next version, might have saved me. Also an audible notification from the board or from the app when pushback is happening seems like a no brainer

Good vid. How old is your son? The first week I got my board I met this guy twenty years year younger who broke his elbow a day earlier in his first week. I had my eyes wide open. Despite that I had a coupe of nose dives, small crashes and then a big nose dive which was definitely a confidence buster. I took a step back and was super careful at that point, (not even leaving the driveway) and it kept happening at slow speeds. Turns out it was faulty footpad!!. I wish I had figured out before that last nose dive! Getting the confidence back took a while. Would always recommend elbow pads for anyone

My old Vega tyre wasn't flat, it was more ribbed on one side that the other too. I ride off road quite a bit so I'm now on the burris, a rounder tire is so much better once you get your heel to toe balance strength/coordination going. With my old Vega I got some real sketchy wobbles trying to straight line on tarmac at more than a jogging speed

I think that new rounded wheel is going to be a major issue on a device that is finally at a price for novices to jump into. I think a more affordable one wheel, should have been designed for non-skaters. It should be MORE STABLE, not more 'carvy'. Its the only reason that I am holding back. Watching PROs wobble around on the Pint makes me as a person who has never even skateboarded, a little hesitant.

@pauk.w
@pauk.w 5 лет назад
Absolutely. Looking on the Facebook ads there are plenty of parents buying these for their kids as if they're the latest toy craze. And complete newcomers saying they want to use the OW for commuting (how soon are you planning on that?!). The lack of respect for what these can do is terrifying. The self balancing means it's much easier to get out your depth very fast - it almost feels like training wheels that disappear when you reach higher speeds. Anyone after a few hours of practice can pelt it down the road in a straight line, but without the experience in handling one slight imperfection on the road or obstacle appearing can cause some major injury. As someone who hasn't skateboarded, I think the OneWheel is fine to learn from scratch if you respect the learning curve. But there are times I wonder if a lot of the things I'm learning I would have been better learned on a skateboard without all the balancing tech. I certainly wouldn't dream of riding without safety gear now. It's strange seeing people wear just a helmet. How are you planning to fall so that only your head needs protection? If anything, a full set of pads will protect you far more than a helmet at cruising speeds.
@UltramaticOrange

It goes without saying that you should carry a first-aid kit with you for that inevitable fall. The first one is the worst to stand up and walk away from. Don't be afraid to take your time and rest. Cancel plans or call late into work. Carry Band-Aid brand "Skin-Flex" bandaids (trust me) with you (and don't peek unless you're prepared to change the bandage).

Get g form arm armour. Wear at least the lead arm. When you fall this will save a lot if grief. Good he was wearing a pack, it saved a bunch of road rash for sure but he was wearing it a bad way, would have saved more if it were secure and if it had a water bladder In it. Also I dunno what he had in the pack but be aware of where anything is in 5he pack, keep things secure. Years back I took an allen key to the torso.. any deeper could have hit my kidney. I learned a lot in that bail. And never get over confident when riding un familiar terrain, even paved stuff..... glad hes okay. I'm writing all this more for new riders than you Jimmy, you've got some miles of exp. ;) :) board failure is something you should practice, I ride downhill bikes and have full armour went in grass downhill and literally turning the board off on purpose and riding it out.. here's my 2c... IF board failure occurs you must either jump free immediately and run out the crash ( pretty easy to do , less easy if un expected but still possiblle, learn to jump off the board immediately when nose touches ) or, find balance point t and lean board all back to ground tail.. this will not stop you on pavement if down hill, you are merely buying some thinking time... how far till flatter terrain, should I jump where can I steer the board ( you can still roughly rudder off the back of the board ) and then reacting appropriately. We found on a 50 degree hill with a de lower situation 1 of 20 attempts resulted on a crash that would have been pretty painful if i were not wearing full armour. Impact on a dive for the body is knee ( sometimes ) lead hip, lead elbow, lead shoulder ( most energy already absorbed by elbow ) a roll usually follows and then back/scapula region.. helmet took zero impacts in any crash, though you should still always ride with one cause you don't GET to smash your head more than once.. ride safe and have fun.. if you have armour I highly suggest practicing bails, you can also check voltage on the board with a multi tester as your battery ages over time.

Lol if I got those injuries I just let it bleed until it stops. No washing, no disinfecting, no bandaids, no stitches, just let it bleed the bacteria out and it'll scab over when the contaminants have been washed away with the blood. I've taken two gearless falls in flip flops and shorts at 20+mph and everything healed up fine. I wear a helmet now because brain damaged doesn't heal, but the other stuff is too inconvenient for me to put on, especially since I don't usually just ride to ride, but I have somewhere I'm going to. Hard to shop with so much gear on. Carrying a helmet in one hand and having my euc in the other is already too much and makes shopping with the euc a pain.

Thanks for posting the hazards in addition to the fun. I hope your son heals quickly. After watching tons of your videos, I purchased an EUC, and this video confirms I made a choice that suits my needs: a speedy, relatively safe, fun last mile vehicle. I think the onewheel's strength is also its weakness: the wide tire. It's great for cruising over mud and sand, but hit a twisted bump like a tree root and it dances under your feet. How do you think an EUC would have performed rolling over the same bump?

Totaling around 900km on the board now, I've fallen 3 times, luckily nothing too serious (I wear helmet, wrist guards and gloves). 1st time was lack of experience (around 100km in), let a car pass by then accelerated to get up to speed, which lead to my first nose dive ! Sore wrist and few scratches on the knee ! The other two times have been exactly like your son (one around 500km, the other around 800km) : the first one being on gravel I was going a bit too fast (over confident) and hit a stone that threw me off (fingers and hand badly lacerated and a big bruise on my hip), the second one happened with a root that had lifted the concrete up and even though I was being very careful as there were lots of roots on this road it just threw me off the board like mad ... Sore wrist and second bruise on same hip ... When the board starts to wobble you know you're gonna be in pain ! This being said after a couple of weeks hopping around I'm back riding again, this board is so addictive and I love it ! ps : 2 broken wrists in one fall whilst snowboarding, twisted ankles and wrists whilst rollerblading/skateboarding and a broken foot coming down stairs once ... so everything is dangerous, is it worth the risk is more the question ? :)

Thanks for this video I've been thinking about getting one as well. @freshlycharged
@freshlycharged 5 лет назад
Great questions! My son, all of us, should pay better attention and be prepared for bumps in the road, especially when going at moderate and fast speeds. We don't see as many electric skateboard crashes for many reasons... People are familiar with skateboards whereas the Onewheel is new tech and electric skateboard need a hand control which really limits your ability to film. The Onewheel is just awesome for filming as both hands are free so more people film their rides while in a Onewheel... Just some of my thoughts.

I hope the recovery is going well! I would absolutely recommend Flight Fins to reduce the chance of falls like this. I've hit a few bumps like the one in your video that I'm sure I've only been able to ride out of because of them. On the OW you only need to hit a small bump/wobble that you weren't expecting that can unweight your stance and cause your feet to slide off. If you look at the video closely this is what happens to your son. To get friction on the pads you need the downforce which is easily disrupted! Absolutely worth the investment!!
