Not sure if that old SCOBY is good for brewing a batch of kombucha? Or maybe you stored it in the fridge or just forgot about it? Use this technique to find out if your SCOBY is still good.

Hi. So I was an idiot and tossed my starter tea because I didn't realise the importance of it. I just wanted to clean out my jar. Now I am left with a nice big scoby without starter. I put it in some new sweet tea, and it's been about a week, there is a nice new clean scoby forming on top, but zero fermentation happening. I'm worried because there are no bubbles forming. Before it was super fast, like I'd leave it overnight and the next morning it would be all bubbled up like crazy and almost ready to drink. Should I be worried or just wait a bit longer?

I had a Scoby in the cabinet for quite a few months. Followed your method to test it, but I'm 8 days in, and there's a spot of mold on top of the tea. The Scoby is at the bottom. The tea smells like vinegar. Can I dump the tea and try again with the Scoby (though I wouldn't have starter tea left after dumping the molded tea), or is the entire Scoby waste now?

Hi Ashleigh. It's all no good now. Especially the SCOBY since it had the mold. I am sorry to hear about your troubles. Thank you for the video. So i have a question. I bought a kombucha kit it was new but never used. The scoby says best used by june 2019. The scoby looks similar to ones i have seen and still has the starter tea. Would it be safe to use and test it?

Hi David. I'd give it a try. Someone gave me a scoby that has bagged and sat for 5 years and it worked. I'll link you to another video to watch that shows a method on how to check if scoby is still alive. Also, the first batch might not taste good. So before you give up on that scoby make at least 2 batches

@@KombuchaLiz thank you i have trued it to see if it works. The scoby looks good there is some slimy stuff floating in the mix. I assume it was another scoby trying to form.

@@KombuchaLiz i tested the ph level and it looks like 2.5 smells good still. It smells like a fermentation. Wish i knew what a scobe smells like. I have no point of reference.

Yes that's another scoby forming you'll also get chunks of yeast

It smells kind of vinegar-ey. The pH is good and if you like the taste go ahead and drink it up or put it in F2. I know that starting out can be scary because, like you said, there's no point fo reference
