I think the "Pitt" method for planting tulips was brilliant. My husband helped me plant bulbs one year. He got tired, so he dug a big hole, threw in my mini daffodils, threw the big clump of dirt over the bulbs and called it quits. Guess which bulbs bloomed best that year? Yep, the ones planted in the hole.
After seeing you plant your tulip bulbs this way, I planted 100 daffodil bulbs the same way. The bulbs found their way and I have had a beautiful show this month in NC, Zone 8a. A much easier way to plant bulbs.
How exciting! Think of all the time you gained by not planting them the traditional way. I keep a paint scraper by the door to remove mud from my shoes. Loving the nursery and wish I could see it in person. Maybe you could get smell-a-vision for your channel??? LOL Happy Easter!
Yesss! Go you! I also did the same and it’s worked beautifully. The only reason why I would see one not wanting to do this is if they live in a warm climate and need to split the bulb for extra stem length since some of the stems can be slightly wonky. Looking forward to seeing if your “perennialized” bulbs flower. I am seeing buds on my triumphs that I couldn’t harvest
I have been wondering how the bulbs you "dumped" turned out. Thank you so much for sharing! I have never been interested in bulbs because they are so much work for a "one and done". I will definitely plant bulbs this fall. Fan in Bozeman, MT.
I had planted most of my tulips the egg box way and then saw your video and planted my final 1000 like you. They are all coming up fine and so that’s my way forward from now on! Life’s too short!
I am sooo trying this with tulip bulbs in the fall. The squirrels always try to dig them up but it would be easy to cover the area with chicken wire and would save so much time and my knees! Thanks for the tip!
First year for me and my tulips are coming up also! Will they make I till mothers day or will I need to intercept to save them?? Thank you in advance!!
Mother Nature is a tough ol' broad, if she want's something to grow... it will grow!!!! I live just above Pittsburgh, PA and I wait to put things in the ground until after Mother's Day. Has worked well for me so far 🙂
Nature always finds a way. Glad it worked out for you. 😃 Saved you a ton of back breaking work. Crew socks are ok. I prefer tube socks. And who cares if they’re white! Been watching you since the beginning. I live vicariously through you. Hope to make it from MA this year. May you have a successful year again!🥰
Ooooo how exciting!!! I’m a very young snowbird and will be heading home to northern lower Michigan in just about 3 more weeks. I live in the same growing zone as you and the only reason I am looking forward to going back is to check out my perennial garden, do some spring clean up and get to starting some more seeds!! It’s tough to start something in Florida then take it home when 6 months of my life has to fit in the box of my truck 😂😂😂 My 2 cats, in carriers, along with all of their and our needs, for an overnight stay have to fit into the cab 🥰 Sure forces us to scale back when packing!
Yes I did the same thing after watching you (and having major surgery!) and they came up just fine - all harvested since I live in SC!! I open my stand this weekend!! YAY!
Hi Nicole. Wonderful to see those little tulip tips coming up. Sorry about your shoes. I was holding my breath hoping for an update on the ranunculus. I'm in Zone 3 British Columbia Canada and I have put plastic over some hoops. In about a week I hope I can put my ranunculus sprouts in there. The ground is still frozen each morning, but in the tent yesterday it was up to zero! Thinking I might need to put two sheets of plastic over my 48" tall hoops. Then inside I can always add row cover. Just wondering how it's going with the ranunc. I appreciate the fun you have with your projects. The silliness. I get it. Thanks for the many laughs.
Hello from London UK dear Nicole 😀 I personally did not know of the Dutch "planting" method but did hear many times that a bulb finds its way up in Springtime. It is wonderful to see all these little guys starting to shoot in the ground and I will keep my fingers crossed for you until US Mother's Day which coincides with the French one. What makes me really happy for you is that you & Brad are soon going on a road trip as it is healthy for your sanity and personal balance to allow yourself little breaks from the flowers / plants world. 💚
Good to see the update on the tulips. I’ve always planted mine that way because even the colorblends information paper says it doesn’t matter if they’re right side up or not. I’m in zone 5 and it was 12 degrees this morning; my tulip foliage is about 6” and they seem to be ok. 🤞🏻
If tulips can push their way up thru asphalt, I had no doubt they'd be able to sprout probably no mater which way they were facing. How fun some of your last years are coming up, hope they all bloom well
Careful back dragging with the tractor with the hydraulics fully extended like that. It’s that action that has the most likely cause of bent hydraulic cylinder rods!
I was sure it was going to work. That's how the tulip farmers in The Netherlands plant them. I even saw a Florette video where she was invited to visit an USA tulip farmer and showed how they plant them with a big machine and that dumps them between mesh or so.
You planted them exactly how the large farms plant them, I never had a doubt. If I wasn't so obsessive and detail oriented, I would have done the exact same thing...lol!
I can promise you if you grow them under a hoop house, some kind of covering they will return for you more than not, and return for you quicker timing with a longer stem, saving a whole lotta money😒👹🫶🏽🐝💨💨😂
