Is Netflix Doing Damage to Stargate's Brand? (Clip)

Darren and David have spoken with potential new Stargate watchers who have turned their backs on trying the series because Netflix has slapped with a TV-MA sticker on the ENTIRE series for nudity. Though the version of the pilot on Netflix does contain nudity, it is not representative of the family-nature of the rest of the show and is actively turning new viewers away.
Despite months of fan petitions, Netflix doesn't appear to care. What damage is this doing to potential new audience members long-term? Is there anything left for Stargate fans to do, or are we just shouting into a void?

Just another example of how the ones running the business are less informed than the fan base 😖

Which is irrelevant for two reasons. . 1) Existing "canon" is irrelevant. What matters is the quality and consistency of a given story. Nobody is ever under any obligation to keep telling an existing story. They can potentially tell a new one, and potentially tell it better. They're not going to, but it's equally as possible as continuing what was, or doing something else entirely. It's stupidity to just assume Stargate or any other franchise can't be done better. Especially since Stargate, Star Wars, Star Trek...and really everything with a huge, rabid fanbase...isn't all that good in the first place. . 2) Fans are really terrible at coming up with anything. Really...really terrible. There ideas are usually the worst. Plenty of bad professional writers exist (most), and they do really awful (nearly everything on TV/Streaming today), but fans are still far, far worse. Mary Sue began as a fan creation, after all. And really, while that's an extreme, almost all characters are of the same type, to varying degrees...but almost all quite bad. Once in a blue moon, a fan will come up with something good...like HFPs The Last Skywalker. But mostly, fan stuff is shit.

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 You mean like the Star Trek fans that kept one of the greatest SciFi franchises going even though all of Hollywood left it for dead , or like the Firefly fans that created the opportunity for Joss Whedon to make a fantastic movie based on the series or the fans that got “The Expanse “ on Amazon after being dropped by SyFy . There are plenty of examples of the fans recognizing what makes a successful show when Hollywood doesn’t. I wholeheartedly agree with the problematic TV-MA Rating for Stargate SG-1 on Netflix. A TON of new potential fans are totally unaware of what the SG-1 series actually is due to this rating. People still pay attention to ratings, especially those with younger audience members (young kids and older youth such as pre-teens). A TV-MA rating is not indicative of a family friendly TV series such as 90’s shows like Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Parents/Families are most likely turning away from SG-1 due to this inaccurate rating on the series as a whole. I watched SG-1 as a young child with my parents. My mother introduced me to Stargate at quite a young age. SG-1 and SG Atlantis ARE family friendly series in my opinion. A parent/guardian is recommended to accommodate younger child while watching but not totally needed as I often watched the series alone when I was 8-9+ years old. Netflix currently has over 208 million paid subscribers and surely MANY more than that who have access to Netflix accounts. I am really disappointed with Netflix for at the very least not addressing this ratings issue and ultimately fixing it by putting a different cut of the pilot episode in their library.

Back when SG-1 first aired on Showtime, I was still using TV antennae and didn't have access to cable. It wasn't until years later when I saw it on Sci-Fi. I think I started on season 6 and had to watch 1-5 at a later date. The pilot episode I watched did not have nudity and not being exposed to that it was always a family show to me. My kids love it and it's something we can all watch together. Universe was a bit dark and more for mature audiences IMO. I loved the cast of Universe but it didn't feel like Stargate. I really want the fourth series to be more like SG-1 and Atlantis.

I think with the Universe the bigger trouble is that when you have a gate seed ship you can be practically invulnerable. Just drop one gate to a star and another in the middle of the enemy or to fuel scoop. I have mixed feelings about the Universe anyway. Sometimes it felt that Nicholas Rush was the only sane person in there who actually made sense. The basic foodstuff did not made sense. Not a single Zet gun they brought with them.......

The american sensibilitites just don't make sense to me. "Oh god, there's skin, that's totally unnatural. Let's kill some people instead, so the children have something to watch"... makes me wonder if mirrors are banned in America so people can't see themselves after they shower. It's an episode showing rape (what else would I call what the Goa'ould do) and that's okay for kids to watch but only if there's no skin visible? It seems you have Stargate on three streaming services, which is three more than we have in Germany, so it's difficult to me to understand why the narrative is framed as "one of the three uses a version of one (!) episode you don't like", instead of how it should be available in other markets as well so the audience is built up.
@kenyonmoon3272

But it is intended for general audiences, including those with grade school kids. Using the M nudity to recruit would be even more misleading than the generic rating because it will recruit an audience who will be disappointed and complain which may be a worse business situation than unintentionally pushing away an audience who would enjoy it.

I don’t understand why so many people in America are against nudity and why nudity has to equal anti-family in their mind. As someone who watched SG-1 from the beginning on Showtime, I always liked that about Children of the gods and hoped there would be more in the show. Made the show a bit more realistic. In fact it’s generally surprising that SG-1 hasn’t come across any nudist tribes or colonies in their adventures, we have several here just on earth. That said, I understand the outrage here since the entire show is being rated based just on the first episode. That is some lazy programming.
@Seluecus1
@Seluecus1 3 года назад
Is there a way to contact Netflix about this? clearly, every single episode past CotG would technically be PG-13. There's very little blood and foul language in the entire series. Really, the only thing that makes it a PG-13 title is the combat. Well, i did my part (at least what i could). Left a tweet to Netflix about this issue and tagged y'all, Brad, Amazon, and Bezos. I'm hoping it will play some form of part in fixing this before (Again, hopefully) Amazon decides SG is worth continuing.

I really think this is only talked about by Stargate fans and no one else. Stargate fans aren't going to stop watching it. This is an old show and I really don't think that Nudity rating is stopping 10's of thousands of people from watching it. With that said, In my experience when I ask someone if they have watched Stargate SG1 they usually, 1, say they have never heard of it, 2, say they remember some movie a long time ago called Stargate and either saw it or didn't, 3, say they watch it or have watched it. I have never heard someone say they came across it on Netflix and saw the Nudity rating so they didn't watch it. That is just my experience. It would be interesting to hear if someone has actually talked to someone that didn't watch it because of that rating. I am sure if they did they would tell the person that is just the first episode, on some streaming sites. I love Stargate and encourage anyone that is a SciFi fan to watch it. The only thing is, that if a parent does that, they are most likely going to watch the first episode as their guideline. If they watch the original that Netflix has, they will see the nudity, and not unreasonably assume that the rest of the series is like that. Parents aren't likely going to be watching a ton of episodes to decides if it is suitable or not. Then again, if they watch an episode other than Children of the Gods, deem it suitable for their kids, and then their kids start at the beginning on Netflix, they will get the nudity scene.

@@Bastion90 One episode just to if it is okay for the kidz is NOT responsible parenting. For one. But to the point: This is a show you get in to and WANT to show the kids. The nudity would be second to that in this case and maybe it is remembered as a why not too. The correct version is the original version, end of. Editing around nudity because people are prudes is the failure here, not the "failure" of giving out different versions to different streaming services. The best version would be the original version, finally upscaled like the other episodes.

since the pilot version was tv-ma i am guessing they kept the highest tv rating as the bar when delivering the entire season as a bundle. part of this could be to avoid potential rejection by netflix. 1. netflix rejections may result in fines if a delivery from a studio contains some sort of inaccuracy or defect. 2. it could be perceived that a higher tv rating is less crucial than something delivered with a lower tv rating that actuality. eg., tv-ma delivered as tv-14. the incentive is to just get the content out there. now it is out there, mgm can make the adjustments needed to correct the metadata on netflix. mgm may need to talk with a netflix rep to sort this out. fans will need to voice this to them otherwise both sides may not care because their end goal could be just to have to content out there - which it is.

Here is another complaint: It will be a very cold day in HELL when I choose to restart my subscription to Netflix so I can watch Stargate SG-1! It would be cheaper (and more satisfying) for me to buy the series (perhaps on DVD?) than waste that kind of money to be able to watch one TV series. Just my opinion - yours may vary, and that's okay.

Not sure it would turn away many. Most parents know of stargate at this point. As far as MA rating, totally unnecessary, but the biggest draw I have seen are 20-30 year olds discovering the series for the first time (not to mention my 30 year old girlfriend just marathoned all SG1 and is about to wrap up Atlantis..onto universe next, then pray for a new show). So yeah, it might have got some avoiding the show, but not as many as you would think, and might even draw some who want to watch a mature show and seen that rating. I'd call it a wash.

The great mystery to me is why Netflix simply doesn’t stream the two less explicit versions of _Children of the Gods,_ after all, isn’t that why the final cut was made? I’ve always felt that _SG-1_ was the logical descendant at the end of a lineage starting with the _Flash Gordon_ serials on through to _Star Wars:_ adventure stories for all ages! Okay, I’m a Media Junkie, and a bit of a purist too, and so the original cut can be placed in a separate pocket of Netflix easily enough, I’d imagine! Methinks someone is shortsighted!

I am a huge SG fan including Universe. Never could keep up with TV, nothing! ADHD, kids,, laundry,, life.. So being able to binge so many years later is amazing. I Netflix and Prime. Netflix is in my bedtime routine. Can't figure out why I can't fall asleep with Prime? Autoplay is turned off. I'm a chronic insomniac. So SG is more important to me than just an old cool TV show. Any SG series has replaced my ST Voyager. I was shocked and didn't understand Children of the Gods when it came back to Netflix. I thought what the??? Then I learned of the different cuts and TV-MA controversy. In all honesty, I'm glad the show didn't go on like that. The PG version should put on Netflix. I hope the buy goes thru, that Amazon gives the green light for new productions. I need to know what happens with Eli!!! New movies to set the stage for new series or continuation of. I hope Brad can get this ball rolling. Even the glimmer of hope is exciting.

despite this, most younger people go to netflix over hulu or amazon. Netflix is more kid friendly and if they gave it a proper rating, it would get so much more traction. For instance, i'd have absolute no issue sitting down with my 9/7 year olds and watching this series. There is nothing in it that they haven't seen from shows they watch. At most, there's some blood. It is truly ridiculous.

I actually only watched SG-1 in 2008. I did not watch it prior. I believe I watched the original version of the premier at that time. It did not negatively impact my opinion of the series. I enjoyed watching it for the first time and binged it all in a matter of weeks. I have subsequently seen the final version. This also did not hurt my opinion of the show. Bottom line, we need new eyes in here on this series. Sure it’d be great if all the new people got the best versions… but just like when Trek got big in syndication in the 70’s… the version you got often varied in quality from one tv station to another. It had varied cuts due to what each local station was doing to the show. What the viewer was using to view the series varied widely. Some only had black white TVs . Some had color. Some had bad OTA reception. Still with all of this, Star Trek The Original Series managed to explode in terms of popularity. Yes, it was a different time and there were less places to receive visual media at home. That certainly helped. However, what hooked people was the content. The content stood on its own no matter how badly it was impacted by the factors listed above. As I said before. We’ve got to get new eyes on this show. We’ve got to spread the word amongst friends, family, and most importantly new acquaintances in sci-fi community. I watched most of SG-1 on my iPhone 4 on a 3.5 inch screen. It was glorious. Is this the most optimum way to view it? No. But that didn’t matter. The content stood on its own. Did you guys mention that Stargate is still being syndicated and show over the air in many places in the US? While broadcast digital signals are HD, it doesn’t mean the TVs used to watch these shows are. They could be and sometimes are SD TVs with converters attached. I know people that are still using cathode TVs cause they still work. Could the nudity/ TVMA thing turn people away? Maybe. But what we see in that first episode is extremely tame by today’s standards. New viewers are going to have to decide for themselves. The content will stand on its own. We’ve got to get new eyes on these shows. We’ve got to spread the word, and more importantly be un afraid to share it with all kinds of people. I had a conversation in comment section recently on this channel where a fellow fan was decrying trying to get the word out to other genre channels. They were afraid of the channel that I mentioned. Mostly because they presumed that channel to be negative. We can’t be afraid to share Stargate with other people. It will stand on its own.

Ratings don't matter to people. No idea why you guys are discussing it for so many months now, looks like an edit of old footage and reupload. "Oh there is nudity?! Great, I'm gonna watch it." Is more how younger people are gonna approach it if they even notice the TV-MA and know what it means by some miracle. Honestly who even knows what all these ratings mean let alone follow them. Plus what's "mature" over there? Since when do people need to hide their bodies? I guess that's for the prudish Americans who fear the sight of bare skin on TV.
