The sexual tension between John Sheppard and Teyla Emmagan was a current which ran through numerous seasons of Stargate Atlantis. But it was effectively stopped in its tracks when the writers had to deal with a real-life actor development. Executive Producer Joseph Mallozzi weighs in.

I generally think it should of been John’s child because it would of been quite a big thing for Michael to get his hands on a child with BOTH wraith & ancient dna. Instead they just brought in some random guy we never heard of who we saw for only a few scenes. It would of been interesting to watch John not only trying to save teyla, but also his child. @johnpatz8395
@johnpatz8395 2 года назад
Yeah, I always wondered about that as well, one might say the staffs were to large to take a bunch through as they only could take so much, as they would always be incredibly useful, but the zags would be great, and useful anywhere they went and of course you could fit a bunch into a relatively small crate, or just issue ever member one as a sidearm
@quinnsinclair7028
@quinnsinclair7028 2 года назад
Aesthetic. The staffs and zats were part of the SG-1 aesthetic. The wraith stunners were part of Atlantis's. The two didn't cross back and forth much cause they wanted some elements of the show to look distinct to each one. I'm still a bit bummed they didn't collect a bunch of the asuran/ancient blasters cause those things looked sick.
@johnpatz8395
@johnpatz8395 2 года назад
@@quinnsinclair7028 yeah, I understand that reasoning, but I still think they could have started out with, at least the soldiers equipped with some zats, so at least initially they had the benefits they could provide, until such time as they came up with an Atlantis/Wraith equivalent. Even once SG command had the ability to move ships, equipment and personnel between the different galaxies, they could easily explain that they didn’t send more zats as they were in short supply as they were being used to arm friendly forces on other planets in our own galaxy, and do so in such a way that these other planets weren’t found in possession of weapons that proved they were in contact with, and likely had some sort of alliance with, earth. Although by the time the Atlantis series was started they could have easily provided the outbound crew a new zat weapon that was manufactured by, and for, SG Command. I mean by that time we were building, in effect, space super carriers/battleships and space fighters, so a handheld pistil, or even rifle, that could stun people would seem like a piece of cake, not to mention, if going into a completely unknown territory, with God knows what life forms and/or civilizations, it would seem that a weapon that stuns humans and humanoid beings would be the first choice, so as to not start off by killing individuals from races which might have otherwise become powerful allies. I always felt that zats would have been one of the systems that would get the most time and effort put into recreating them, since while staff weapons are more powerful, per shot, than earth firearms, they really didn’t do anything we couldn’t do with other systems, but the closest thing we have to a zat would be stun guns and tasers, which either require making direct contact with the subject, at a fairly short range, and the subject not be wearing something that might interfere with the charge being delivered. Plus of course they can’t really be used against multiple targets in short order, while the zat could be used like a regular pistol, but instead of firing a standard bullet, meant to kill it’s target, it simply fires an electrical charge to stun them.

Writing Rachel’s pregnancy into Teyla’s character was a big mistake. It wasn’t necessary. They could’ve shot around the pregnancy. It happens all the time in film and tv. They could’ve written a story arc where she wasn’t around for a while. Lots of fans, including myself, hated the baby storyline. Yes, they made it work but it really wasn’t good. As for a John and Teyla relationship, it could’ve been something that developed slowly over time without really being a focus. Fans will ship characters no matter what is on screen. The show actually had too much relationship drama that, IMO detracted from the primary story of the show.

The only time it seemed like there was a possible undercurrent of a relationship between Weir and Sheppard was in "The Long Goodbye" when they were being possessed, it seemed to hint that the two were in some way venting unspoken feelings for the other. It always seemed like the Teyla/Ronon relationship was more like a big brother/little sister since Teyla seemed to try and convince Ronon she could handle herself. What about the possibility of if Michael had been a female Wraith flirting with Sheppard?

Sheppard/McKay all the way. At most 90% of people are straight, but for some reason it needed the sixteenth season of the show until we went from 100% to 99.9% of characters being straight. And yes, a minor character in SGA was technically not straight but the only scene to that regard was cut - which speaks for itself.

I liked that they brought in the external relationship for Teyla. Having UST between Sheppard and Teyla would have been too cliche, in my opinion. They'd had it for years with Sam and Jack, so it was a nice change to have two attractive, heterosexual characters be just friends, with one of them having an off-screen relationship with someone else. Having it be with one of her own people was a way of tying Teyla back to the Athosians, 'cos they kind of got forgotten about for a couple of seasons, bookended by their important role early and late in the series.

There was just something about Sheppard that exempted his character from requiring a love interest. It just seemed to me that whatever Sheppard was lacking is exactly what made him complete. Another possibility is that he could have been given a female comrade that would have had a possibility for romance with someone else, there was never anything with Sheppard that made him seem as appealing as either Teal'c or O'Neil in that regard. If he'd had a female colleague he could serve as a "big brother" or mentor to then it could have further fleshed him out instead of the snarky banter with McKay

@herrzimm

Simple: As a "leader", John would instinctively want to "protect" his love interest. Meaning keeping them out of harm's way, AND possibly going too far and become "controlling". His own 'leadership' would take over and turn him from a 'good partner" to a "controlling partner" and ruin any 'romantic relationship'. Also, as military (or police for Vegas episode) he is in a career with a LOT of secrets that have to be kept. So, he would also end up with a huge portion of his life that he simply could not, will not, talk about. And cutting portions of your life off from your partner makes it difficult to relate to, especially when you are struggling at your career, but can't talk about it to anyone else.
@neelubird
@neelubird 2 года назад
@@herrzimm That was the exact same reasoning behind Jean Luc Picard being a loner in Star Trek TNG. He did get romantically involved with a female member of his crew, but then one day he made a decision that was more about protecting her than being professional and in the best interests of the ship, which led to her deciding to transfer to another ship for professional reasons and they broke up

I'd say, not really. For a good chunk of time Weir was in a relationship/considered herself to be in one and later on we pretty much get a direct confirmation that she's not exactly in a spot to get in a relationship, with everybody being technically her employees. And while similar thing may be said about Sheppard and Teyla it's not quite the same. He did a lot of "Kirk'ing", but it always felt to me he found solace in Teyla's presence, not quite so with Weir where it was definitely more of a matter of respect by comparison. Putting her in a relationship with another Athosian was a graceful way out of the problem, but Kanaan (was it?) sure could use a bit more screen time to facilitate it.

Teyla and Sheppard were too much alike...both warriors, fighters etc. Same with Laren...it was just a game of combating each other...but then what? If John Sheppard hadn't already married someone and given his vow for life, he needed someone who was his opposite: mature emotionally, spiritually and psychologically while having a witty, teasing, challenging side that could keep his interest...oh, and brains...lots and lots of brains...so she could impress him on a daily basis. She would be vulnerable in a physical way...not a fighter...so that he would have a gift to contribute. Modest, virtuous, funny and brave too. Sheppard seemed to crucify himself when he failed: the crash in Afghanistan and losing the person he went back for, his marriage, his father and brother etc. He was hardest on himself and yet it was that bravery that was his best feature. He wasn't guarded when it came to his team. He was a father figure, always checking in on them. He was immature with women though...maybe b/c his mother was MIA and he had no sisters...but the right woman would address this in a patient and teachable way. Sorry, not a fan of "Kirking" anyone...using another person as your own personal crack pipe shows your immaturity and selfishness...Sheppard should be above this...it was his greatest flaw in the series as McKay noted that Sheppard only dated women who were wildly immature. Too bad he didn't fight for his marriage too. God bless~

1:07 It really couldn't have been because he'd grown into the better upstanding (compared to his reputation by other officers lol) member of the military. She served under him, albeit not in the same command but on the same team. So in his mind Sheppard (the character) probably would've not pursued it until she and him separated from direct defense command structure (ala Carter and O'Neill tension). Another thing too... there was a bit of romantic? sexual? idk tension between Sheppard and Weir in the early seasons. That coupling would've been an interesting thing to explore given they've both assumed leadership roles of basically equal stature. (I think Weir was technically the boss of everyone, but that doesn't make sense. the military would defer to her for civil matters, but military matters Sheppard was in charge.)

Shame Sheppard and Teyla never got together in the show. You could see the chemistry between both characters (as well as the people who played them) right from the start. I know they got together in the Legacy novels, but I still prefer to actually SEEING them on (the small) sceen than actually reading about it. It just isn't the same. I am sure Kanaan is a good guy. But he was rarely in the show and the few scenes he was in wasn't enough to fully connect to him or get to know the character or his background. Sheppard and Teyla's connection with one another was quite obvious from the beginning of the show and I hoped that it would develop into more before the show's end. Alas, it was not to be (yet)... Kill a person one week and bring them back 10 times the next. Multiverse the heck out of anything which reduces any claims of singular connection. It wasn't just the pregnancy that put the kibosh on the in-show relationship, it was the timing of it. Had Rachel become pregnant towards the end of the season, where any protruding stomach could have been hidden with clothing or camera angles, and her last trimester would have been in the off-season, they could have done a relationship angle. Both Scarlett Johannson and Gal Gadot were pregnant during filming of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Wonder Woman respectively, so it can be done.

The over-the-shoulder stunners were pretty much canned by the time season 3 happened, but the pistol stunners were used often enough for the entire show, granted the team often did not carry them. Maybe they had problems refueling them, so they were kept strictly as an MP weapon on Atlantis?

Shippers vs Non-Shippers.... F*** shippers! Don't let the fanbase DICTATE the story or characters because you can never please ALL of them and end up alienating fans. Plus, not ALL characters need to be in a "romantic relationship" type of situation with male/female lead characters. What is wrong with a brother-sister type of relationship like Teyla and Ronan had at the end? What is wrong with a "old married couple" situation that you had with Sam/Jack near the end of season 6+? Or even the "co-partner" type of thing like we had with Sam/Cameron, where it was simply a level of respect and knowing who had the proper skill-set for the situation? Loving each other does NOT have to be "romantic" in nature. It can simply be a familiar 'family type' of thing and actually work BETTER. It allows freedom to explore differences without harming relationships. It allows freedom to bring in new characters for main characters to "conflict" without needing to instantly make one "bad". You also have the freedom to show how far someone will be willing to go in order to safe/protect someone without having to be asked or motivated by external sources. It also allows TONS of material for comedy, tension through different end goals, moments of tenderness through difficult times, and can be a good way to set up a 'split from each other and having to rebuild the relationship" from multiple points of view. Sorry, but when it comes to "shipping" a couple, just because the "fans want it"? Those are SELFISH fans who clearly have no concept of what they are DENYING THEMSELVES by NOT "shipping" characters. Especially characters who are in shows like SG1/SGA, where there is a 'command structure' in place that would keep them APART from each other if they start to have a "shipping relationship". Sam and Jack would be reassigned because of it to different teams, possibly thrown out of the SGC entirely. John would be forced to REMOVE Teyla from the team entirely, possibly having her deciding to leave the Atlantis to be with her people. Weir would have to FIRE McKay if their situation was "shipped". Shipping is just basic "fan service" that is acceptable to do OUTSIDE of the show. But never bring it INTO the show, because you will only end up ruining what the creative team of the show is attempting to do.
@admirallily

Shippers are as much a core and integral part of a fanbase as anything. So much so that in Galaxy Quest they even had a place in that satire on Star Trek. Because it's as common as any other fantype and has a place. Don't hate on shippers too much. They've had a role in helping keep shows going and bringing shows back as much as any other fan of a show.

They did, yes, but I think they specifically had in mind the bulky ones Wraith warriors carried that kinda filled the same niche the Jaffa staves did. Those disappeared rather quickly and, I think, the last time you see them used is once somewhere in season 3, at least as far as human usage of Wraith weapon is concerned. The pistol ones that Wraith commanders (i.e. the Matrix-looking mfs) carried became the mainstay instead.

What I never understood about that was; Area 51 can reverse-engineer alien tech, but they never duplicate the effect of a zat? It the same with Atlantis, they have the technology of the Alterans at their fingertips and they can't make an Alterna-based derivate with all the systems at their disposal? If they had gained anti-Replicator tech from O'Neil after his second run-in with a Repository, how could then not make something that would be useful for Stargate operations? Although I found the zats weird it was also strange that they couldn't do something for a alien-based sidearm in the event they ran out of bullets during a prolonged shootout with hostiles like the Goa'uld or Replicators

I found it strange that they didn’t take any zats with they to Atlantis. I can understand from a show point of view wanting to keep things separate. But in universe the sgc collected who knows how many over the years and even if they still couldn’t recharge them. They would have been useful even not knowing what they would find. Also if I remember correctly, they were used effectively on wraith when they made it to the sgc.

I didn't like the whole Teyla pregnancy thing... great that Rachel was having a baby irl, good for her, really...congratulations, still. But I already found the whole Michael arc annoying enough as it was, to continue it by making Teyla's baby wanted by him in a way was just annoying on too many levels. And it never really got to anything either... there was no pay off, the baby was only ever a baby. Why was he so special? I highly doubt this was the first time two people with the 'gift' got together in such a fashion, there must've been others out there who were born from two parents with Wraith DNA . I believe there was something said about people with this type of DNA being drawn to each other because they understood each other better, or whatever it was. So why go for Teyla's baby when there were more than likely other people out there who could've served the same purpose? Imho it made Teyla's character more frustrating, and she was already a little bit high up her own ass from the start. To give her indesiciveness on top of that due to concerns for her own safety and the safety of the kid just made her unlikable in my opinion. Beckett or Keller should've introduced her to the wonders of birth control.

man, you're harsh. about absolutely right. Personally I think that John and Teyla did hook up because they all end up on Earth and since we don't KNOW if she went back to the Pegasus galaxy, it would've been a natural progression to build on that attraction and have that relationship we wanted. We haven't seen Sam and Jack together anyway. Teyla and John were going to be a galactic couple, and frankly, the attraction between them was palpable in the early seasons. They screwed up when they tried to bring Rachell's pregnancy to the show. Even after Teyla gave birth, John always had a more special bond with her. I really wanted them to get married and have children in the SG Universe, if that happened, they would be the only SG couple with a happy and sure ending anyway.
