Speaking as a veteran of Life Insurance industry of over 47 years I lost count of the number of times NYLIC wanting me to join them. They are a great company no mistake about it. They year in and year out have more agents listed in Million Dollar Round Table than next 10 companies combined. Any newbie needs to understand they need to see people period & life insurance has to be sold. 1st thing a newbie should learn is master the art of prospecting. Here a tip I learn from Earl Nightingale 'Lead the Field' Spend 1 hour per day on thinking of ways to contact prospects & what is their needs ? Young parents are concerned about providing for their babies &children let not for get grandparents also might be interested in leaving endowments for their grandchildren, next drive around in your neighborhood see how many homes are for sell hey get some flyers made up & but few packets of flower seeds & hang on the doors include your business card & brief resume that you sell mortgage life insurance. OK I hope this helps.

One thing to be aware of as far as prospecting goes.........in some markets, every business that exists has already been hit up at least a dozen times by NYL, or AFLAC or any number of similar companies. These businesses aren't going to buy from you just because you're comfortable talking to them. AFLAC, for example, will tell you point blank not to say the work "AFLAC" because owners will immediately shut down when they hear it.

I am an independent life insurance agent. NY Life has tried to tecruit me several times. The NY Life insurance product is excellent. Their agency system no so much. The commissions for the agent are lower because you are supporting this huge infrastructure of managers. You are better off on your own.

To cast doubt on the work of the New York Life Insurance Company is unconscionable speaking from the perspective of a 52 year life insurance agent who started as a Special Agent with the original John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company. The beneficiaries of my former clients are now collecting on the promises we--the insurance company and me--made to our clients. A $150,000 life insurance policy written in 1976 just paid a death benefit that included dividends used to buy paid-up additions the aggregate sum of $760,000 as the insured requested. There are sharks in every industry. Agents who are not interested in learning about the financial instrument that could create a sizable estate with a few drops of ink have no future in the financial services industry. There's no free lunch. Learn the trade or lose out to the sharks. It's not the fault of the insurance company.

NY life told me to do a “market survey” where I ask 10 of my friends and family what their thoughts around me working at NY life AND give me 5 referrals. Nah, not for me.

Good stuff. I'm actually going in for an interview this week. I kind of like the idea of starting off with the life insurance side of the business and working my way into an advisory role. Heck, I need to get my Series 6 or 7 anyway down the road, so might as well sell life insurance. They do give a little salary to get things started for you, in the beginning.

They don't train at all, they just want to use newbies to get them prospects/ leads and get most of the commission for themselves.
