Is obesity in our genes? Dr. Elizabeth Speliotes, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., explains the role genes play in body size and shape.
By analyzing genetic samples of 300,000 individuals across the globe, researchers have found more than 100 locations across the genome linked with obesity traits. These genetic clues may one day help doctors tailor the advice they give to patients about obesity complications. The study was published in the 12 Feb. issue of Nature.

Your ancestors ate deer, goat, cow, fish once or twice a day and they fasted many times a year. But we eat sugar and starch and canola oil and chemicals 5 times a day and NEVER fast.

You can see the difference in children. My side of the family is pudgy but my husband's side is thin. My children do not normally turn down food, ever. His (my step children) will happily go most of the day without eating or mentioning food. There's definitely something in the brain that helps thin people to not desire food as much, or to be satisfied with much less. I'm not a scientist but it's pretty obvious.

Sugar , carb and caffeine spike insulin which if overconsumed causes the body to crave more of it. The ketogenic diet ( low carb if you like for kids ) cures this epidemic.

@@liveforchrist1474 Meta-analysis destroyed your claim since patients in a lot of studies lost weight with bread, refined sugar and corn syrup in their diet. According to these studies : being in a Caloric deficit, eating enough proteins and fibers are the main keys. You can lose fat with any diet : keto, carnivore, etc.

Many studies concluded that many factors weighed (no pun intended) in the current obesity crisis we are witnessing. Those studies determined there are 7 causes whom lead to obesity (eating habits, exercising, genetics, sleep, etc.). But, genes isn't the sole problem here. Which explains why the obesity rate went from less than 3% to 42% in the USA in less than 75 years. I was a former obese (I've lost 100 pounds since) and you have to work on what lead to your weight gain. Sorry for my English mistakes.

Thank you for your perspective. I have a keen interest in this subject as I am addicted to fitness/sports science and recently read a book which says "blaming obesity on the individuals is a poor point of a view" and the basic premise of the book is that it is mainly genetic and very hard to "fix". I want to ask you, after you lost weight did you find it hard to maintain your new weight and lifestyle/nutrition?

@@tamimhusain3376 It's not the easiest route. Losing weight isn't easy. Keeping the weight down is even harder and you need help. The hardest part is eating the right food (cut the sugar as much as you can) and sleeping (resting enough). But, where did you find those studies? Most serious studies linked common specific causes to obesity. Genes are there, but it's not the main cause. Why? The obesity rates went from less than 3% to 42% in less than 75 years. Genes aren't changing that fast. But, society had changed.

No, but now that we have so many unhealthy lifestyle options readily available, people who are genetically predisposed to obesity will have a harder time losing weight. People who have genetic traits that cause a tendency to overeat or store fat are able to eat low quality food to their heart’s content at a low cost.

@@agees924 genetics have very little to do with obesity. it's a cultural phenomenon. if you're great grand mother ate like shit, she will most likely raise your mother to eat like shit, then raising you to eat like shit. it's all nurture. why is it humans are the only mammals on earth that somehow ends obese, it's we choose to over eat.

My wife’s grandmother spent the last twenty years of her life in a wheelchair overweight ,Her mom is the same . She has 4 sisters that right around 50 years started gaining weight uncontrollably. There’s also arthritis involved. ?

I think we are genetically predisposed to a certain level of propensity for food. I have 4 cats, all are happy to "come to eat", but the black cat always "stops" eating after half a can of cat food. The fatter cat cannot have enough and she eats other cats' food. Children who are not "picky" about food tend to become fat latter in life. So, in some ways, one can say that if you were in an environment where food is limited.(eg three plain food meals in jail), you would tend to be skinny.

Nope a lot of people in jail are fat because the food is pork and other undesirable meals. Our bodies all work differently some prisoners are buff because they exercise all day. Anyways what you eat is very important and how much and when you eat also plays apart.

Some people just burn foods faster I guess. Me and my younger brother eat about the same amount of food around 3000-4000 kcal per day. But he's 53 kgs @ 162cm and I'm 105kg @ 192cm.

Read Dr.Atkins book titled Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. He explains ketosis and low carb dieting very thoroughly in this book, it's so easy to understand. Its the book my dad followed to loose 275 lb in a year and 2 months. He kept with low carb eating, he ate all the meat and fat he wanted and got healthy. He started with zero carbs and no caffeine for a week to get the body into the state of ketosis. He used Keto Sticks they are urine test strips. After the first week he gradually added more carbs but not exceeding 40 grams of carbs per day through out his weight loss journey. If the body is in the state of ketosis it can not store fat it can only shed fat and other toxic weight so he ate all the fat and calories he wanted to keep himself satisfied while ketosing. There is no need to count calories as long as you are keeping your carb intake low enough to keep you ketosing. I have maternal relatives specifically females that are quite physically fit and within the means as far as weight and height ratio goes as youngsters but somehow once they reach womanhood their bodies undergo extreme transformation into obese mode

Having good or bad genes won't help you in those cases. You will gain weight if you're in a 1000 calories surplus.

Ok so worth pointing out some basic statistical theory here. If you've studied the genome of obese people and mapped anomalies against the general population, you have not proven genetic causes for obesity. You would have to test the alternative hypothesis (environment and dietary causes) by identifying said genes in a group of children and studying weight outcomes and its relationship with lifestyle.

Obesity is 100% genetics. Fat people almost never lose weight and if they do they regain their "normal" weight in just a few short months.

True my dad was skinny and my mom fat and both worked hard in tire factories. We all ate the same meals every day. My mom was big boned and fat all her life. I took after my mom with large bones and large calves that I could never wear boots even when I was young and thinner. My pants had to be tailored because my legs were too big even though I only weighed 225 lbs and was 6' 8 inches tall..

Also, no colon cleansers are needed on a diet that causes the body to ketose, in fact it can be detrimental. I made that mistake and almost killed my kidneys it hurt so bad so I quit colon cleansers while keto dieting and I felt so much better. If your test shows pink/purple color it means you're ketosing. The darker the pink/purple color means the heavier you're ketosing meaning the faster you are loosing weight. If your test shows no pink/purple color it means you are not ketosing not loosing weight but gaining weight so you have to keep eating zero carbs and no caffeine until pink/purple color shows on your test. Eating practically zero carbs for a week should get your body into deep ketosis. Sorry to repeat myself but I hope this info helps people loose weight fast like my dad did. I don't rely on the Atkins foods for weightloss though because I don't like the sweeteners and other ingredients in alot of them. I mostly eat meat, fat, low carb veggies and low carb fruit ,nuts not so many cashews, unlimited butter, full fat sour cream and mayo. I pray you understand it completely in Jesus' name. If she ate the same amount of calories as her husband, it's normal she would be obese. Females ate fewer calories than males in the wild amongst mammals. The muscle mass and the bone density isn't the same for a man or a woman. Simple biology.

Read Dr.Atkins book titled Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. He explains ketosis and low carb dieting very thoroughly in this book, it's so easy to understand. Its the book my dad followed to loose 275 lb in a year and 2 months. He kept with low carb eating, he ate all the meat and fat he wanted and got healthy. He started with zero carbs and no caffeine for a week to get the body into the state of ketosis. He used Keto Sticks they are urine test strips. After the first week he gradually added more carbs but not exceeding 40 grams of carbs per day through out his weight loss journey. If the body is in the state of ketosis it can not store fat it can only shed fat and other toxic weight so he ate all the fat and calories he wanted to keep himself satisfied while ketosing. There is no need to count calories as long as you are keeping your carb intake low enough to keep you ketosing. Forty grams of carbs per day is a recommended limit to keep the body in the state of ketosis. If you have a cheat day or cheat meal your body may stop ketosing because of overconsumption of carbs so all you have to do after a cheat day is start over by eating zero carbs and no caffeine for a week to get yourself back into a nice deep ketosis. Caffeine spikes insulin thus slowing weighloss so some people restrict it completely even after the first week to avoid slowed weightloss. Really wish people would get that but fat bigotry is acceptable in our society and in many others as well. It is so ingrained in us to see fat as something completely controllable yet any study coming out contradicting their biases against fat people makes them angry as you can see in these comments No one cares about fat people's health. They just want a punching bag that they can bully without impunity, so now that people are becoming more aware of fat bigotry, discrimination etc and that more studies are coming out showing that obesity has biological factors like genetics, they are afraid of losing their societal punching bag, like other groups in the past were.

Genetics make some minor differences in fitness for some people in some circumstances. But 99% of the time genetics have been used by people as an excuse to let themselves go. If your whole family is fat, it's NOT proof that they're genetically predisposed to be fat. It just means they passed bad eating and living habits to one another. Scientists should be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating this genetics/obesity lie.

Obesity is a choice. And in order to solve it and/or prevent it, discipline is needed. If you know your metabolism is weak and you gain weight easily, then don't eat junk foods all the time. Only eat healthy foods and don't eat large meals. Eat small portioned meals every 2-3 hours. Drink clean water. No drinks with sugars because sugar is your worst enemy. Either filter your own water or buy some fruits and make your own juice without any added sugar. Also, exercise regularly. Workout for AT LEAST 45 minutes. Anything less than that and you're only burning 50 calories at most.

One of these days we are going to realise it's more about harmones and genes. I used to be just like you when I was younger. Fat people eat to much and move to little. Calories in calories out. I got older and realized weight loss is a bitch now. I walk 5 to 6 miles 7 days a week, cycle, 1.5 hour workout 3x a week and have not had a cheat meal in 3 months. On my workout days I do about 4 hours total of weightlifting and cardio. I managed to drop about 8 pounds in that period eating home cooked lean cuts of meat and veg only. I come to find out today my testosterone levels are borderline clinically low and my thyroid levels are just on the line of normal so docs wont touch it. Its ridiculous. A hair lower and my doc said they would treat me. We can blame the insurance companies for that one. 10 years back I worked out with some guys who did 0 cardio and consumed 4k to 5k calories a day. We did the same workout and I was doing cardio. They managed to stay insanely lean despite their caloric intake. Never lost their abs and very vascular. Fast forward ten years. They all have guts and manboobs now from their years of steroid abuse and I can promise you they are not eating 5k calories a day anymore. So were they burning 3k calories in the gym? No. They were not even that big. Muscle burns maybe 10 to 20 calories extra per pound so that's not what's burning 3k calories extra a day either. Their harmones made it so their caloric partitioning favored muscle gain much more than it did fat. Now that their harmones are jacked up like mine and I never took anything they all have guts and manboobs. But 10 years ago they were shredded eating garbage diets and twice as much.
