I bought all their records... until viva la vida, which never really hooked me. I am old fan, Don't like them since they becae colourful and jumpily happy. I prefered their dark era.
Personally, I think they did what they want and what they felt. The public may have a small effect, but otherwise I don’t really think they care as much about fame than as fun
@Proxima Centauri I don't get it myself. They are serious musicians, and they must know that what they are doing is not an evolution. It's like they're trying hard now not to be taken seriously. It may be a finger to the critics that panned them even when they had some self respect, but all it is, is a Fk U to us fans that have been with them from the beginning. OK, there is always at least one or 2 tracks that I like on every album after Viva, Charlie Brown, for example, or the trifecta on Ghost Stories of Magic, Midnite and Oceans, and Headful of Dreams did lend itself to a phenomenal live show, but fkn BTS.!? Coldplay from the Parachutes/AROBTTH days would've swallowed their own faecal matter before designing yo peddle in it.
songs like daylight and clocks and speed of sound, also death and all his friends and trouble were somethng that defined them, im pissed that those guys started becoming more like the chainsmokers, they used to be something else, trust me those were my favourite artists back in the days but after paradise and myloxyloto they went to complete shit, they went pop and multicultural af.
@@Esch47on Coldplay is your elementary school friend who spent college in the city, met new and younger friends and snobbed you. I hope they understand that most of Coldplay haters are actually their original fans. They felt betrayed. Coldplay's first three albums were the soundtrack of my youth and I hate them for tarnishing my memories by "collabbing" with Katy Perry, Chainsmokers, Beyonce, and BTS.
To be honest everyday life is the best album they have had since rush of blood to the head the rest I do feel is generic but parachutes rush of blood to the head and everyday life are so personal and magical And with their new album being probably I feel the worst one they have ever had relying on featuring other artists and with some songs straight up not even being considered worth the effort to get a name just plain symbols Coldplay is no longer the same is that a bad thing? Not always but With Coldplay I feel that they have devolved overtime if they continue down the road they’re on Then I feel that everyday life might be the last good album in my opinion
Especially when the media gets in and starts calling you "the next big thing" or an "artist to watch" and all you wanted to do was make a cool album with your friends. It makes people expect masterpieces from you, and if you don't deliver on that expectation, then you're a "flop" or a "failure".
watch chris martins interview with Zane Lowe around the release of Ghost Stories in 2014, its very introspective, hes opening up so much about his personal struggles including the pressures he felt during releases and the reception of his band because of how they polarise people, it basically led him into depression and only deepened his insecurity
That's why Daft Punk didn't release another album after Random Access Memories. After making a masterpiece like that album you can't release another album without receiving bad reviews.
@@tumadrexuxa the first two are really good, the third has its moments and viva la vida has my favorite song by them "violet hill." But after this they pretty much suck, indeed.
My dad has a take on Coldplay that I've internalized: they got famous, and started writing songs that would keep them famous. Neither of us really like modern pop, so we stick to the early albums. A Rush of Blood to the Head is honestly one of my favorite chill-out albums ever.
Its pretty pompous to say that just because something doesn't fit your taste, that means it's not genuine. People are allowed to enjoy other types of music. And statistically speaking, the style that is most popular is most likely going to be what any given band is going to enjoy.
Chris Martin is on record saying he wanted to be the biggest band in the world. That's why coldplay collaborated with Rihanna, Beyonce, ChainSmokers at their peak. To stay famous
@@dama301 What band wouldn't want to be the biggest band in the world? Wanting that is not evidence that a band would do anything to achieve that goal. You don't know that they didn't collaborate with those people because they were good friends or genuinely enjoyed their music. Hundreds of millions of people around the world enjoy their music, who are you to say that Chris Martin and the rest of the band dont? Just because it isn't your cup of tea?
They aren't even near being the biggest band of the 21st century... Coldplay sold around 80 million albums, in the same time frame there is a band which sold way more: 130 million albums and its linkin park
@@Naikomi95 imo Linkin Park was the best and the biggest, but coldplay is up there with them for sure, back then there wasn't much of "biggest band" idea, music is absurdly subjective and numbers don't exactly matter the most
@@Naikomi95 I just checked Wikipedia; Coldplay and Linkin Park both have 100million claimed sales. Also, Coldplay topped LP in streaming platform; In spotify Coldplay has 40m monthly listener, while LP has 20m monthly listener. We are still in early 21th century though, who knows an even bigger band will came
@@mham42 Yeah I love LP, they are up there with Coldplay for me, they would be my 2nd favourite band (behind Coldplay), but Green Day have done a lot more albums though, so they are my 3rd favourite. Anyway, because we lost Chester..almost 4 years ago now, I still can’t fathom it, but because we did, whatever happens with LP in the future now, it won’t ever be the same again. But I have been enjoying Mike Shinoda’s solo albums though. P.S, a new era of Coldplay is starting tomorrow! Higher Power. Guess I shouldn't of had any expectations, the song sucked..
8:56 the reason why Viva la Vida sold less compared to their previous albums is mainly due to the 2007-2009 financial crisis or aka "The Great Recession", I truly believe if the crisis didn't happen, the album would've been their best selling album.
anybody else remember the controversy from that release though? (A number of songs were eerily similar to ones off an album released in mexico in the 80's with viva la vida existing almost verbatim but originally played on an acoustic guitar instead of a string section) Sadly I can't remember the name of the band they were accused of ripping off of and it was never proven (however suspicions did rise again when they released every color is a waterfall which happened to have the exact same melody and harmony as another track on that same record) I remember being handedly convinced that they'd at the least heard and been inspired by this record, after listening to it myself, and was still a fan regardless but I do wonder if those accusations might have affected things as well
Yeah this is the worst Middle8 video ever for sure. He doesn't know what he's saying with MX and GS, and as a music nerd he should know that album sales have been dropping since the mid 00s
I think everyone just wants to profit from their BS records without really being interesting or pushing out of their norm. I wouldn’t blame streaming, I would blame the artist being stale. Everyone wants to bitch that streaming is ruining record sales, and if it truly is, then good.
I think you're forgetting that right after he made that comment he mentioned lowered critic AND user scores, showing a general decline in the quality of their music according to the public and professional alike.
Sadly, they have become “I like their old stuff” for me. Parachutes was a phenomenal album. So good. Stood the test of time, and easily. Rush was really good, and made them famous. After that, it was just okay, then more okay, then more okay. By X&Y, I felt like I was starting to notice there were these repetitive motifs to most of their songs. I still listen to Parachutes a couple of times a year.
Easy answer: they leaned hard on piano driven balladry when the thing that actually made them interesting - the piano’s interplay with textured guitars. Once the piano became the focus, it was all downhill.
In one of their interviews Chris Martin said "There is enough darkness in the world, that's why we are trying to bring joy to people with our music". I don't know if it can explain the change in their music but in my opinion it can help us to see their view more clearly.
@@stressedbyamountainofbooks Who cares? I mean it's all subjective at the end of the day. It's not even like they're the first band to deal with these critiques, The Cure dealt with a lot of the same stuff after their goth trilogy.
Maybe it's only me but sad music actually gets me in a good mood, because it helps me bleed that "darkness" out of my system, that's why I loved their earlier music. I find their happy, upbeat music fake and shallow and it does actually make me feel depressed.
I cant even cook a meal that everyone will enjoy let alone imagine trying to make multiple albums that sell millions. Moral of the story Coldplay acconplished alot to be proud of 🙌
Fact! I don't think they would've ever gotten it right. Getting it right by anyone's standards may be getting it wrong for everyone else. Personally Everyday Life is a masterpiece for me. Probably the album I connected with the most. Right up there with the very best for me.
Yes! Like are you kidding me? This video is so biased and is obvious that the author disliked coldplay as they grew. Which there is nothing wrong if he doesn't like all of their tracks because who does? I like some of them but just because I don't like all doesn't mean they are a failure. Music is art and that's subjective. Besides sales can be chalked up to many things like the rise of digital music streaming services most of us have a subscription with a music service we don't specifically buy physical albums anymore, why not chalk it up to that or other creative reasons. And then the authors says random shit like "what's left of the fanbase" what in the fuck is he talking about and where is he getting this information? It's not like the "few" that like Coldplay got huddled up and gave him an opinion. This video is so ridiculous honestly

Bottom line is Coldplay became 'too mainstream' so critics and music snobs began to distance themselves from their music. I don't care whether a band is mainstream or not, if I like their music I am going to listen to it
I don’t think it’s too ‘mainstream’-like at all. But I agree with everything else you said. Coldplay is just doing their own thing and I love them for that. I still prefer their older albums, (X&Y and Parachutes ❤️❤️) but I still adore all their work
My dad loves coldaply, and ever since I was a kid, he would play their songs in the car, be it for 15 minute trips to the supermarket or days on end when we went for a long trip. Child me was happy, happier than I've ever been in my life, and that pure happiness and adoration for life and new experiences is what I associate with Coldplay songs. I grew up to be an even bigger fan than my dad, and every single album, every song means something to me, most connected to fuzzy memories from my childhood. They're still my favourite, and I haven't ever been disappointed, because they try and do something new every time the release an album. I remember when my parents got divorced and my dad and I lost that connection with him for a while, so we had to rebuild our relationship from ground up when I was a teenager. The joy I felt when he came over to see me one day and we sat down to watch the video for 'Up and Up' together on the day of it's release.. Knowing that my dad enjoys a song so hopeful and happy, I felt safer and more comfy in my own hopes. I'm 20 now, and life's put me through the grater (I am ukrainian if that helps you piece anything together), and Coldplay songs still cheer me up or let me enjoy my melancholy. I've come to associate 'Yellow' with my boyfriend, too, so Coldplay never really leaves my life. Their music is just so meaningful to me, even if the lyrics are a little silly at times.
❤they're a band that give u a feeling of hope, a feeling that things can be better and will be better. that's why i've always loved them, they're a sigh of relief and they're a glimmer of hope, the sunshine on a rainy day
Ghost Stories is like a world of its own. The whole album has a distinct atmosphere to it that just pulls you in and you don't want to get out. It's melancholy but also sweet.. hopeful. I love it.
Coldplay’s story basically encapsulates what every band faces at one point or another: if you don’t experiment or broaden your style, people will say all your songs sound the same and are not evolving and boring, if you change, people will say they miss the old sound and you’re a sell-out. A rush of blood to the head is my favourite record of theirs, and I definitely felt their stagnation through the years. I honestly skipped Everyday Life. Think I might go listen to it now :)
The strokes with their new album are a good example of how a band should renovate their sound and still sound fuckin amazing. Any band can change their sound for the sake of changing the sound. Radiohead also are a good example of constant sound change while maintaining the quality and yet sounding quintessentially Radiohead. Coldplay definitely changed their sound but after their fourth album they sounded like a completely different band that had nothing to do with what Coldplay was for those first four records. A lot of old fans felt like that's not Coldplay anymore. But yes all of this is because we imposed Coldplay to sound a particular way and we felt we were cheated but in the end, it's for Chris Martin and the Co. to deicide what Coldplay is. I am sure they have their reasons for taking those directions that they did. P.S. trouble in town is a great song on that album. You should definitely check it out.
Coldplay was a victim of critics and music snobs forcing them to “evolve” and pushing them in the wrong direction instead of doing what they enjoyed and were good at which is also what their fans liked
I don't really understand why people hate Coldplay right now, pretty much every "popular song" at school was once one of their latest hits, and people still recognise them
I don't think hating them is actually about the band itself. I think it has more so to do with the amount of times their music is replayed on the radio, which isn't the fault of coldplay at all. Any song that's overplayed quickly becomes hated.
Tbh their more recent pop hits from the past ten years irritate me the most. It’s not that they make bad music; most of their music is actually very catchy and beautiful. I really love Yellow & Don’t Panic, and Viva La Vida of course is an amazing song in its own right. But even their older stuff is still corny britpop, while being backed up with ingenuity and great instrumentals. Still, I do like some of their newer stuff - Adventure of a Lifetime, despite the music video, actually is a super catchy song. I’ve kinda wrote them off mostly cause after listening to Parachutes, I didn’t think i’d like the rest of their music. Esp. cause the snippets i’ve listened to from their other albums didn’t enthrall me. But this video has made me reconsider taking a chance with their discography.
I’m so glad Everyday Life was mentioned, it’s seriously my favorite Album next to Parachutes and deserves so much more recognition. I never get bored of listening to it
Literally , Every Successful Artist is Under Harsh Criticism , they are successful with success criticism always exists ,they aren't special or that people or critics are specifically harsh towards them .
@@aditya_raina_ i think people ate harsher to Coldplay because they’re so strong in their masculinity and people feel the need to prove they can handle constant attacks. Like me and fating haha

Honestly they are still popular after 20 years, I don’t think they need any more validation at this point..they gave us so many good songs and inspired so many musicians….
im surprised they managed to still make hit songs i mean i thought after a head full of dreams they were done since everyday life wasnt so good but then music of the spheres happened and higher power my universe and let somebody go were all hit songs so its crazy how they’re still going
The fall in sales is more attributed to the general decline of sales of physical copys. People just don't buy album anymore. So it's not a good measure of popularity
That’s definitely somewhat true. I mean you just gotta get your song popular through Tiktok and it can be mainstream and it doesn’t necessarily have to play on the radio because Spotify charts pretty much dominate everything right although it’s nice to have that freedom of having access to so much music it really hurts very talented artists who are hidden behind the people who appeal to the mainstream world
I'm not a huge fan of Coldplay new music, but to people who say Coldplay is trash are just plain wrong. Their first 4 albums has so many great songs its literally enough to carry them the rest of their lives. I liken Coldplay to Eminem where I don't like their current music but they were so good early on it doesn't matter. I'll always have a good opinion of them music wise
@@chrismarple Pfft, your comment is laughable my dude. I don’t know what a masterpiece is? Phah, you are clearly stuck in the past, and not capable of understanding that music evolves. Objectively Coldplay’s lyrics are better now than they were in the earlier days. Just look at all the lyrics from Everyday Life, it’s more raw and meaningful than it’s ever been before. Say what you want about their sound sonically, it’s called an evolved sound to me, and I like it, but you clearly don’t have a music capacity that is capable of growing and adapting. It’s people like you that will always be the fake fans of Coldplay.
I'm glad you closed with "in truth, Coldplay didn't do anything wrong." Honestly, how many bands in history have had 10 huge albums? Almost none. Most bands don't even have one. 3-4 huge albums is impressive. Let's give Coldplay credit for that. They had better careers than 99% of the bands out there. So they weren't the Beatles. Who is?
I was in high school and suddenly lost all of my friend group after realising they had been using me. Not really end of the world but for a teenager it was hard. Ghost Stories really was my only companion at the time and I felt so much better. I got over the hurt more quickly than I would have without this album. O and Always in my Head are masterpieces.
I love this album so much! It does have more of an indie vibe, and wasn't really mainstream pop. It's an album you listen through from start to finish.
I've been an avid Coldplay defender for decades. I genuinely think Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends is one of the best albums of the 21st Century, and for me, definitely the best pop album of the 21st Century. It's such a visceral, sublime and utmost beautiful record - reletentlessly triumphant to say the least with an uplifting and enriching conceptual theme and exploration. I wholeheartedly think, regardless of their downfall in quality recently, Coldplay is extremely overhated by pretentious music nerds and critics - but hey, as George Lucas said, critics and fans tend to know nothing about art.

I no longer listen to any of Coldplay's recent works but honestly their first 4 albums hold a special place in my heart. "Parachutes" is a fucking masterpiece
Same except for Mylo. Wasn’t the biggest fan of it initially, but it has grown on me over time. It still has my least favourite Coldplay song on it tho. Major Minus.
Feel like I’m probably Coldplay’s ideal fan, in that I both wore out my Parachutes CD back in 2000 AND still love their modern releases as well. I’ve heard a lot of people mention this trope of being ‘ashamed’ or ‘embarrassed’ to be a Coldplay fan but I think that viewpoint says more about the fan than the band. Like, I’m sad for people if they care more about what strangers might think about their music taste than they care about just enjoying things they like. Also, every single one of those other bands you listed (Radiohead, Bon Iver etc) started out super strong but have gradually disappeared up their own arses a little bit, just like Coldplay, so I don’t see them as being much different, just less widely successful.
@@peanutismint gave your comment a like despite not agreeing with your last paragraph. I know nothing of Bon Iver, but I won’t tolerate any Radiohead slander here
'A Sky Full Of Stars' plays an important role in the album and has a natural part of the wider record - with the prior track flowing into it perfectly. Your argument against Ghost Stories basically resorted down to "EDM bad" - when the album is actually far better than you're giving it credit for.
Pareciera como si todo el álbum estuviera hecho para que llegue el momento de A SKY full of Star pero aún así no es el final por qué nos dejan con Fly On recordándonos que el álbum no deja de ser una roptura y una despedida
I agree, it's about widening the horizon, and being open minded. The world is constantly changing and so does people. And music is something more subjective, so yea
I agree the first 2 albums are great actually when it comes to music in the 2000s a ROBTTH is a masterpiece and X/Y is really good and viva la Vida is also really good.
Ghost Stories is actually one of my favourite Coldplay albums. I like the simplicity of Chris Martin's lyrics, and I usually enjoy complicated and intricate storytelling in music. In the song 'Magic', the simplicity really lends to the emotions. Sometimes we don't have the words to express the overwhelming feelings of love or grief that we experience. I feel like his writing and delivery really show the cocktail of emotions he must have been feeling at the time. It feels honest.
Magic is a top 5 Coldplay song for me. It’s an underrated gem. The album came out right when my parents were divorcing and it felt like the album was written for what my family was living through- which it probably was because Chris was going through his divorce at the same time. Magic is just that- magical ❤️
Ghost Stories is wonderful. It's so personal, intimate, relatable. It's clearly the album you'll listen when you feel blue. Not many can write something that'll comfort you when you're down.
Coldplay could make a fucking incredible shoegaze-esque pop album. Think of tracks like “Glass of Water”, the outro portion to “Yes”, the droning wall-of-guitar sounds on “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart”, “Low”, and “Twisted Logic”...I would love to hear that type of album from them. I love their work shamelessly and I love how open they are to changing and exploring.
Coldplay are solid musicians. Chris's background in worship leading served them well. He understands how to write good hooks and how to use melody to manipulate human emotion. Music can bring about religious experiences. He knows that formula.
How do you judge if it's forced or not? Is it based on whether it appeals to you personally? Or is it that if something follows trends you deem it forced, which implies that no one can truly enjoy current trends and want to be a part of them (which doesn't make any sense because then why is it a trend?)
Agreed! Just found another soul that was saved by the greatest band ever imo. See naysayers, you can have your personal opinions, but objectively, you can’t say sh*t about what Coldplay’s incredible music has done for people!
@@BryanTheBoring yeah mate!..i even reserve the whole day just to watch the whole two part streaming (noted that i'm from another side of the world so their streaming of sunrise happen in the midle of midnight and i still waiting)
I like it too. I discovered Coldplay in 2011 from Paradise being everywhere and I didn't like it, same for Princess of China but I really liked Hurts Like Heaven whenever it got radio play for a period of like a month. I didn't know the name of it until like 5 years later, but now Coldplay are one of my favourite bands and Hurts Like Heaven is in my top 10.
I disagree. I don't even listen to Justin Bieber. But Coldplay had their time. I used to enjoy their whole albums in early 2000s, now I could only fathom a few songs.
Huh? Coldplay is still loved by many people! They havent declined at all, most artists are selling less albums because of online streaming, but i’d say they’re as big as they always were
Still big, but not AS big compared to their early-mid 2000s success. They've definitely declined commercially, even if they're still bigger than the majority of bands out there.
I’d have to disagree. Yes they are just as beloved as ever before, but a lot of fan’s left the scene after A Head Full of Dreams, as they didn’t like the new popish sound that Coldplay were going for. Now you could call those people fake fans as it were, however, I do still believe their fan base was at it’s biggest during 2011. No one I know listens to Coldplay anymore, but back in the day people mentioned them a lot more.
Viva La Vida was their best effort. The critics messed up on that one. I'd argue Viva La Vida is not far off from being a cult classic. X&Y is solid and often overlooked, AROBTTH is a fantastic record and Parachutes is hyped up far too much, they really wear their influences on their sleeve on that record, it is rather comfy sounding though. All subsequent albums, aside from Everyday Life and a few moments on Ghost Stories and Mylo Xyloto are not up to their old standard but Everyday Life is the closest they've gotten.
i was in grade 11 and dissapointed to the max, nontheless saw them for the first time during that tour, on the same day i failed my driving test and maths exam, but hey it was all worth it
When a good thing goes mainstream somehow it’s an issue, which I never have understood. Just because a lot of people have found an appreciation for their songs doesn’t change who they are. I personally love how they’ve explored new sounds, and in my opinion still maintained a Coldplay sound. As an artist I can’t imagine how limiting it would be to only stick w/ the sound of your original albums. And now that they’re even working with BTS on their new album just shows their versatility and willingness to continue exploring new sounds. Really admirable.
I personally didnt like the collab (thought the lyrics were generic & melody wasnt interesting) but it grew on me after a few listens. It was interesting hearing the blend of korean & english. But i still think theres too much going on. Despite being a bts fan, i preferred the collab with selena
@@CoC_Lord Listen to the song 'Coloratura' from their new album. It's almost a progressive-ish song, it's pretty good and definitely not mainstream pop

I don't think they ever went wrong. They do their own thing and never cared about how they're judged. For me they don't have a bad album and even A Head Full of Dreams is a criminally underrated masterpiece
Interestingly enough in an interview/documentary Chris kept mentioning he wanted to make the best of the best. He is a perfectionist and he does care about the reception of his songs
Not a massive Coldplay fan, knew them through Avicii and fell in love with sky full of stars, I remember when they dropped orphans as well, I liked that song.
The thing is they never aimed at sales, I don't think anyone trying to sell would come up with Parachutes or A Rush of Blood to The Head, they always did their thing but people change (and so does their music)
Its like Kanye west said: some bands’s first album sounds exactly like their new album. Thats why bands die off. They do what the world wants rather than what they SHOULD be doing.
Music becomes a business and in order to sell you follow the demographics. A good thing I was able to discover Porcupine Tree, and almost everything from mainstream pales in comparison. Its nothing but 100% art. Pure creativity, technique and expression.
@@abhijitpai2409 TRUE but for me you can always go back music is just music and so good music is good music no matter what form. I personally love Coldplay. The fact that they try and change their tune every now and again is fantastic and I hope they keep on making what they want to make instead of trying to appease critics.
@@shroobzzz yeah! I mean we're seeing artists that are slowly stripping the limits of genre definition. Releasing songs that are genreless, just music that are amazing to listen to. Chris has even said they’re at the point where they want to make the music they WANT to make. I don’t mind it at all. Their old music is always there, but the new stuff is good too. They’ve got music for all sorts of emotions and it’s great. AHFOD is a great happy album that gives you hope, Ghost Stories is good for when you wanna get in your feelings, and the old stuff is there when you just wanna vibe. Great band.
Just hearing a few chords of the different songs from „viva la vida“ sent shivers down my spine. Great memories of a time long gone…and what a soundtrack that went with it.
You really started off as the prosecutor and slow-boiled to defence attorney so subtly that I really didn’t even realize you were doing it. Well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You said it all, it's the timing: bands like Radiohead took the risks at their absolute prime, while Coldplay only took it when it was too late & everybody left. Every single move they make is a tad bit too late, which makes it feel wrong, so they take a step back (which makes it even worse). The first 4 albums will always be my favorite (each one special in its own way), and Everyday Life has a special place to me.
Viva La Vida is one of my favorite songs, love all the historical references in that song and no other music has been able to scratch the itch that song gave me.
@@imaginativeIdeations I'd argue the inverse. By ingratiating themselves with Rihanna and Beyonce and recording stadium hit after stadium hit it's clear Chris Martin was far more interested in radio play and live performance than he was in the music itself. A sky full of stars, hymn for the weekend, a head full of dreams, adventure of a lifetime, paradise, every teardrop is a waterfall - these are all 'stadium hits' and are nothing like the subtle, more sonically developed pieces from the first two albums. Chris has placed too much importance on the live aspect where dancier anthems tend to play much better.
While I appreciate this video, it paints the band as if they “fell off”, Coldplay still is the biggest band in the world, anytime they do have a tour they are completely sold out, and we are talking about arena stadiums.

you’re entitled to your opinion, but don’t state your opinion as objective fact and call people who disagree with you “pretentious music nerds.” if you like it, then listen to it, that’s it
@@Last4TheWin to be fair, pretentious is a good way to describe a fair amount of music nerds. the amount of people I've seen gatekeeping Radiohead or, like, my bloody valentine is ridiculous.
@@joshualee9540 you’re not wrong but i’d argue that that’s a small visible minority of people you see online, and the vast majority of fans of bands like radiohead just like the music for what it is. i more or less commented because i didn’t like how OP derided people that don’t like coldplay as “pretentious music nerds” while in the same comment saying “a masterful artistic work and a visceral and sublime concept record” like that isn’t pretentious lmao
It's such a shame that Everyday Life was so underrated… The problem is that people got used to the stadium-party-pop-anthem side of Coldplay, which tends to be more mainstream. EL is a masterpiece, but it didn't get the attention of those thousands of people who are only interested on the party side of the band.
The first song I've ever heard by them, and even if I don't listen to it much anymore I still think it's an absolute classic. Those strings, those lyrics, just everything...
Coldplay did not went wrong...they are awesome..their message is powerful..they just like to try out different styles, colors...and it is a good thing ❤😊
naah, their current music is definitely not clicking with their older audience. They tried to be the "cool kids on the block" by doing whatever trending now.
@@voidzminer1017 so I wrote this before getting into Coldplay, which means my opinion on them has changed. Nevertheless, Viva La Vida is not better. Parachutes is top tier though, one of my favorite albums of all time
"Most Coldplay fans hide their adoration" Then there's me who just yells how much I love Coldplay for the whole world to hear and forces my friends to listen to them. Like, literally our whole family listens to Coldplay.
I’m glad I came to the comments before watching bc this has been on my watch later for months bc I was debating viewing.... now I’m def not watching 😭😭😭
Please don't take anything you read or hear over here for a fact. The reality of the music industry is way too complex so you don't fully understand it, cause if you did, most artists would probably never sign to a label pretty much ever
I love the singles off their first three albums, but my god, Viva La Vida is such a good concept album. It was the first time I had understood what a concept album could be. I wouldn’t have had the appreciation for Good Kid, Mad City if it weren’t for Viva La Vida showing me what a cohesive album sounds like.
Ok, I just got finished listening to all of their albums, and this gets posted three days later?! But in regards to Coldplay, I never found their style an issue. It may just be nostalgia talking, but I would definitely say they are more ambitious than Imagine Dragons and especially Maroon 5. If I ever get the chance to see them live, I would definitely take it!
I've had the fortunate chance to see them live in 2016, and let me tell you, I was floored, and it only hit me that I was really there was when The Scientist came on.
They are AMAZING live. I've seen them a few times and on one festival I was convincing my (now ex-)boyfriend to go to the front area of the crowd. He got super annoyed for waiting in line and he didn't like their music at all, but afterwards he was absolutely amazed and told me it was the best gig of the whole festival. (A month later we broke up lol because jesus christ what a whiny ass bitch he was). Anyway point being YES DO SO THEYRE AMAZING
Definitely more ambitious than Maroon 5, I don't like to compare Imagine Dragons bc they have their own vibe, Coldplay just hit's much different then them.
I saw them on the Viva La Vida tour. It was one of the best concerts Ive ever been to. It was like going to the best church service ever. It was probably the best show I've ever seen and I've seen Bruce Springsteen twice in concert and can say that.
Yeah, the Maroon 5 comparison was one of the few things I flat-out disagreed with in this video. Adam Levine went full sellout and ditched his band while he was at it. There is no semblance of their old selves in anything they've released in the past 7 or 8 years. Now, I won't try to argue that Chris Martin hasn't sold out, but Coldplay is very much still a band, and even despite some questionable collaborations and clear reaches to stay relevant, there are definitely still lesser-known tracks on each of their recent albums that are unquestionably Coldplay.
X&Y is an underrated album; at the time it seemed like it was little more than Rush of Blood without the acoustic sections, but in fact they were already trying new things, such as building songs around a sample (Talk), and they did all this in full knowledge that it would be played in stadiums. From that point on no two Coldplay albums sound the same, even if they don’t quite hit the mark every time.
It annoys me that people always expect artists/bands to play one style throughout their entire career. The reason I love Coldplay is because every Album is different .
