Oscar Piastri is quietly having one of the best rookie seasons in Formula 1 in a long time. He's been close to Lando Norris all season at McLaren, and has made very few mistakes. He's already won the F2, F3 and Formula Renault championships, so could he be an F1 champion as well?

It's still crazy for me how badly Alpine dropped the ball with losing Piastri. It's almost a no-brainer to keep him at all costs given how much he's achieved. At this rate he could get his first win by next year (podium for this year maybe) then be fighting for a title come 3 or 4 years time. At least for now, it's all on Mclaren to make sure he can bring in a title for himself and the team.

I guess it was sort of wrong place, wrong time for Alpine. Alonso was a better bet than Piastri at the time, and they just didn't have any idea that Nando would leave so suddenly. They'll be kicking themselves, for sure though!

What marks him as a future champion in my view is how calm and calculated he is at all times. Off track he seems like a humble bloke who just enjoys racing. Oscar is doing great and I think he likes the atmosphere at Mclaren. He also seems to get on well with Lando. He is very fast and mature . His weakness which will take time to address is tyre management. However as a rookie you dont expect them to be good at that. It isnt an issue in a sprint race especially only 11 laps! Often you see Oscar fall back in the later stages of a GP. A few commentators have mentioned that. Its a strength of Lando and is what is separating them. Still he will get better and is an amazing prospect. I just want Lando to win a race before Oscar , he deserves it for his loyalty and commitment.

His mindset and mental stability is something which has and will continue serve him well when the time comes for the eventual step up. Many drivers including a number currently on the grid would have crumbled after the tweet regarding his contract and the pressure and spotlight it placed them under going into and through their rookie season but he hasn't been phased, he's been even keel throughout his opening season and has fared very well against a driver who many think will be the next big thing. The only criticism one could have is that he can sometimes be too passive or cautious when racing other cars, something which he has been getting better and more aggressive with as the season has progressed. His incident with Sainz at La Source IMO was on Sainz being too late on the brakes and to avoid hitting the car in front had to dive to the inside to avoid causing a 4-5 car T1 wreck, the same space Piastri was going to occupy. Given his manager and how glowingly those within the Red Bull camp speak of him, should he continue to improve at the rate he is he will be alongside Max at Red Bull.

Going back here just now that Oscar have won podiums and a sprint race! Like I hope the doubters shut up now.

I think the usage of "criminal" is entirely unfounded. If you have 20 of the supposed best drivers in the world competing, by math 17 have to end up outside of the podium. And 10 outside the points. No one in the world exists to simply to give some one else recognition. Being an amazing talent does not entitle anyone to a championship. Sure, Piastri could one day become a world champion, and that will see him crown all his hard work. But there are no guarantees.

I’m glad you called out Alpine and Ottmar for not putting Oscar in a seat straight away after he won three titles in a row. That was the most ridiculously stupid decision I’ve ever seen in motorsport. I’m glad that McLaren are now starting to give him a car that he can show his talent with, because I think that’s partly what has caused alpines self destruction. I think the people in charge at Alpine are now getting rid of everyone who made such a monumental stuff up in letting Oscar go.

Norris was well behind Sainz in the 2019 championship Sainz 6th 96 points and Norris 11th 49 points even Ricciardo was ahead of Norris in the slower Renault but 2020 he was much closer only 8 points behind Sainz
