Is Pink Friday 2 A Worthy Sequel? | Review + Analysis 

What did we think of Pink Friday 2? Also for the record, my other Nicki album ratings: Pink Friday: 8.8/10 Roman Reloaded: 7.5/10 Pinkprint: 9.1/10 Queen: 8.2/10

Only listened to half the album so far but was really confused by the choice of "Are You Gone Already" as the opener. This is a NICKI album, this is your triumphant return to an iconic album and you come out the gate making me wonder if I accidentally clicked on the wrong thing?? I don't think you can even call it a sample cuz it just straight up plays Billie's original for most of the song. It's more like "when the party's over remix" than it's own thing. really soured my mood for the rest of the album.

The album being named Pink Friday works so much against it. As someone said, it could have been named Pink City or something like that. And I think that people would have enjoyed it much more easily.

I have seen a lot of people complain about "a lot of sampling" but like I don't see that as the problem is the way she used the sample.Super Freaky Girl imo was used really good like she made that song feel like a Nicki minaj song while the Heart of Glass sample was so unnesesary it came out of nowhere and it went nowhere. I felt so dissapointed cause she had the opportunity to go hard like on tracks like the one with J.Cole, he's such a rapper's rapper that you would expect that Nicki would go off Chun-Li style. While it has some highlights idk if this really felt like a PF2 but more like some songs that Nicki had laying around and she wanted to put out.

i totally agree with it being too long and therefore unfocused. it has a lot of good moments, but i feel like the tracklisting also made it feel longer than it was. Listening to it on shuffle with Nicki Hendrix coming up in between these super pop songs, made me realise it was so much more pink friday sounding than i realised. i skipped it before but i love it now.

Big Difference, Super Freaky and Last Time were the tracks I thought were most like the original Pink Friday. I can definitely hear Did It On Em, Super Bass and Save Me respectively. The rest of the album felt very mumble rap or drill - her phoned in vocals don’t help this

not the biggest nicki fan, i think this is the first album i fully seated and heard from start to finish while reading the lyrics and in my opinion pretty much like the era is a bit all over the place, i feel the record would improve either dividing in two like you said or scrapping a good 7-9 songs, by the end of the record i was extremely tired and the era felt… like it didn’t happened, the announcement on twitter, the singles dropping so far a part, for what it’s supposed to be a follow up of one of her more iconic albums i wished it was giving the roll out it deserved

thought it was cute but missing that killer instinct, only on tracks like everybody, barbie dangerous, ftcu, bahm bahm where she recreates that early nicki energy

its literally my fav album of hers i do feel a bit scammed with the lack of the full album on the physical versions

I thought this album definitely had fun moments but also lacks a consistent message like you said. I always felt like the ground breaking-ness of the original Pink Friday came from how she made everything her own. She came in the game as a rapper among 2010s pop and literally molded an entire genre through her music. I was hoping from a successor she would once again come back and make these new pop and rnb and other sounds her own, which she sometimes did on PF2. But alot of the times I felt like it was like her trying to fit in with the music of this time rather than owning it. Overall still very good album, that I definitely see growing on me.

Honestly, if she featured more of her “children/sons/daughters” in rap, particularly the women, that would already create that celebratory, legacy vibe she was aiming for. Not that she couldn’t do that with her solo work or the features she chose but I think I would’ve loved like a big ole cipher of her and all those who came after her because of her. Especially if they’re giving her big ups and championing her; maybe one or two of the rep ladies who came before her just to like give it that sort of this is my legacy this is my imprint and I’m a part of rap history and the current zeitgeist in a way that’s not been matched.

A fair critique. I love PF2 and honestly it’s a no-skips album for me. As you mentioned, she’s not hungry like back in 2010 when she had a lot to prove. I interpret Pink Friday 2 as an album of celebration. It’s not meant to be deep, but rather just a culmination of sounds from her previous works. The PinkPrint & Queen are still my favs, but I think PF2 is a worthy sequel.

I loved it sm haha, but I went in with no expectations at all, the title I love purely for the sequelness hehe I love the singing ones so muchhhhh, can't believe you didn't 🥹 22 tracks is insane! It does kinda feel like a summary of all her previous work to me

I love nicki (I mean obv),maybe not as much as I did 5 years ago,but im still a big fan,this album dissapointed,u were much kinder than I expected,this was definitely her following the trend of lowkey almost sound cloudish rap,her trend hopping EDM in roman reloaded made sense,this didn’t ,also the samples were a mess and sounded so fkn cheap,im gonna stop talking shit but im giving this a 4 or a 5,its not horrible but for nicki’s standards it’s meh.

i think the hate for this album only exists online and people are really enjoying the album

i feel kinda disappointed. it’s way too long, it’s unfocused, and a lot of the songs didn’t stand out to me. i was so excited when this came out i listened to it the second i could, but i feel like queen was a much better album.

Falling 4 u it’s my fav. This album it’s so so good. She’s not the same as the Pink Friday 1. I don’t understand why they kept keeping her in a box???

People are stretching so hard to like this lackluster album where the only stand outs are the samples and features. Nothing fresh or inspired about it. If you call yourself the queen of rap, you have the responsibility to deliver. She didn’t.

I have been at best a casual fan if that and recognize she is talented, but I found this overlong and boring because the back half especially felt repetitive. Wish artists would work on a tight 12 to 15 tracks instead because I am sure it would make me recognize what works for this album. It is fun at points but it feels muddled with the misses. A side note. I was listening to CDTV's live stream of the album and its funny how you two differ on Cowgirl and Everybody. He was lukewarm on it, but it amuses me how he said Everybody would give him an anxiety attack if it came on in the club. I feel like overall this album doesnt click with me and I dont know that it will stick with me like Minaj's best.

tbh only chop for me was the intro but other than that was pretty good album.. i like nickis singing i think just some of the songs were too short but my fav today is pink birthday

Personally, I like more songs from PF2 than the original. I cherry-picked about 12 tracks from this album; LAST TIME THAT I SAW YOU is one her greatest songs in forever. You can really hear the first record on that song and can even see it on the first album. Red Ruby Da Sleeze, Big Difference, Bahm Bahm and RNB are all standouts. (and should all be singles) RNB is the big feature track on the album and it's so hype! The single or deluxe version of Beep Beep with 50 is another peak moment. Has to be one of my favorite Nicki songs EVER. My Life is probably the best sample off the album next to Red Ruby. Nicki gets a little more personal with her lyrics here. Just the memories is a good closer and also gave me some warm nostalgic vibes. Reminiscent of the first album. Barbie Dangerous, Pink Friday and the extended Let Me Calm Down are some other highs to mention. As for Pink Friday, some tracks have just aged a lot better than others. Off the complete edition, I only still* love about 7-8 songs. So while I've listened to some of those highlights a lot more like Moment 4 Life, Your Love and Super Bass. I think PF2 feels more evolved. More NOW. More of a mixture of everything we've seen from Nicki from the past until now. The problem is everyone is expecting more of the same. Like a 'safer' sequel or follow up. The fact is that its not 2009 anymore... its not coming back. 😂😅 We're in like an entirely different timeline now and so is Nicki. It's plenty on par with the first album. 💅🏻💖 The hype is just not the same as it was then. not even close and it doesn't need to be. You can't recreate the same result or reaction twice. It's more of an afterglow/celebration or an ode to Pink Friday.

Even thought the album is called Pink Friday 2, it's it own era. I wouldn't look at this album as a sequel, the album is more about her life and what has been going on through the past 5 years of her life. From her dad's death to her new life as mother; than a breakthrough album into pop culture that Pink Friday was. She focused on the music and the sentiment behind them this time and did not focus on making sure there is this amount of single quality songs. In a culture where music is mainly focused on singles and making everything for radio favor, Pink Friday 2 took another root and she just made music and enjoyed it.

You not getting Pink Birthday was pretty telling. I agree that it is too short though.

My opinion... NO... that album isn't worthy... too many sampling destroying the original song. Nothing is original and miss hit. Compare to pink friday, we are so much away and it's kinda bad.

Honestly, no. It was a very disappointing album. I feel really let down. Most of the songs sound like they were produced by a SoundCloud rapper and mastered by the same. Its a successful album, and will continue to, because shes super fanous and has a huge fan base. Thay said, i am just REALLY let down.

Honestly the album was just toooooooooooo loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong and then it got religiously in that one song which sort of was like is out of touch with anyone under the age of 40 who isn’t a millionaire+, and ruined all the momentum it sort of had? Which i just thought it didn’t cause it was just too long….But it was just so long sooo sooo soooooooo long I actually listened to it fully… and like I don’t actually know why it’s called pink Friday 2, it’s kinda like don’t exactly know how it tied into the original? It was fun tho, it sounded like Nicki Minaj, it also every song had a team of 15+ people, 5+ producers, 5+ lyrics really makes you wonder how personal the album actually is, how much actually is Nicki Minaj. like if the songs for what they were sounded like 15+ people worked on each that would be one thing but they don’t… they sound like Miley Cyrus and her dead pets, or if she’s just a brand at this point. And like it just seemed alittle like out of touch, overbloated, and like why ? ngl

Honestly this album was just underwhelming and did not deserve to hold the namesake of Pink Friday. I wasn’t a fan of the interpolations & the opening with that Billie eilish chipmunk sample made me laugh out loud. Not even the tracks that I was most hyped for like Big Difference gave me enough energy to truly enjoy it. I was super bored by the time I was reaching the middle of the album. Then came Everybody with Lil Uzi and I began to hyped again but the beat never fully dropped and it made me feel disappointed again. Then for the type of tracks that I usually most enjoy from Nicki’s discography aka the more pop esque ones… like Cowgirl was SOO disappointing. Her more pop sounding songs had THE MOST basic generic GarageBand beats. I swear Nicki could’ve prospered more if she had more interesting producers. By the end of the album I was just glad it was all over. Which sucks cause I really wanted to enjoy it. 6/10 cause I love Nicki. But truly it’s a 3/10 for me.

i think the theme was PINK FRIDAY 2. every song literally fits that theme in their own unique way, usually through some kind of bubblegum pop adjacent production that reminds you that its an album for the girlies, even though the boys can listen to it too. Its an exploration of the theme through today’s lense, where unlike the first PF album, she is free and has cemented her legacy. she could stop and retire now, and we will still be talking about her in a hundred years. the effortlessness and ease and control of her life comes through in the album, something she did not have yet on the come up. like you said, shes the queen now. in tarot, the epitome of femininity is the empress, a union of the four queens of the minor arcana (pentacles represent money and stability, wands represent creativity and life; swords represent mind and intellect, but also connected to protecting the self; and cups emotion.) i find it fascinating how the album embodies all of the theoretical archetypes of these cards, and it shows how she IS the queen. its meant to highlight her growth, her domination of music (she went up against the machine, and won) and why she deserves her thrown. its an homage to herself and the barbs that have stood by her throughout her journey, despite whatever gets thrown at us.

I love her but the album was all over the place, lacks creativity and boring.. all very generic 6/10 🌟

Oh eeemmm gggggeeee we be same-same again! The Pinkprint is my fave too! 🤩 I had many of the same thoughts and feelings when I was listening to it this Thursday. I know the marketing reason she would go with the title but I think as far as expectation of style and craft go, another “shade of pink” would've left… not a sour taste but less of a preconceived taste. It’s kind of like when you go to a restaurant and you order limeade and take a sip and it's lemonade. It’s not saying lemonade is bad but she had an expectation and now it’s ruined what you’re currently drinking because it’s not what you thought you were getting. Like maybe “Hyper Pink” or “Pink City” or “Gag City: Pink Edition” or “Pink Friday Girlz/ A Barb in Gag City” “Pinkset over Gag City.” Idk something fun like that. But again there’s a world of critics but not a world of cooks so I applaud the art and congratulate the effort. Would love to see more of your Barb takes :) 💕🌸🎀🦩👙💄

Tbh I don’t think it was made for people like you I think it was for her fans and tbh I felt she was very vulnerable on this album and she don’t have to be like that especially to people like you I just feel like this album is a opening for Nicki who knows it might be a b side but I hate the way y’all critique people on the way the rap and which song is which and what she should have done I say you do it make 23 tracklist take your time to make music if you can’t keep your opinions to yourself yes I’m a fan but I’m also not being biased yall come so hard at these artists when they putting out music they created their art and y’all always pick apart everything and that’s why artists don’t put out music
