With the release of Onward, Pixar is now entering a new era of original IPs and emotional stories doomed to be compared to the likes of Toy Story and Coco. But with such a giant uphill battle, does the animation studio really have the means to keep up with their own history?

... It's weird. I came into this film expecting more and was disappointed. And I'm going into Soul disappointed, so maybe it will flips things around? Pixar 2020 can't be double bad, right?

We need another "adult" pixar movie. Y'know, one that has villains like Hopper and dark moments like him being eaten alive by baby birds. No more sequels (maybe a Monsters Inc. 2), no more heavy usage of flashy and goofy action sequences to flex the newest rendering engine. Something like the good ol days.

I think the issue people have with the film is the fact we knew what the tear jearker was likely going to be (the dad) because they gave it away in the trailer. Have they maybe kept it a secret, just had the trailers mention they were going on a quest, but not WHAT the quest was, then maybe it could've had more of an impact

I think the trailers, as always, gave too much away. They could've put in the "world used to be filled with magic" narrative, show a scene with Ian and his brother, show some clips from the roadtrip and leave it alone. Maybe show the clip of Ian casting the reviving spell but without exactly mentioning who is it they're summoning

I think it’s because of the cynical premise. Pixar is usually optimistic with the worlds they create. Dreamworks are way more likely to go like “There’s a magic fantasy world ruined by modern society and humans are garbage and everything is not as cool as it should’ve been loool” premise.

They’ve always hired celebrities for the lead voices, though. Neither Tom Hanks or Tim Allen were considered voiceover artists when they made Toy Story. Neither was Ellen Degeneres for Finding Nemo. Or Billy Crystal and John Goodman for Monsters Inc. Heck, even Julia Louis-Dreyfus - who voices the mom in Onward - voiced Princess Atta in A Bug’s Life, and that was right after Seinfeld had wrapped. Sure, some of the voices of past Pixar/Disney films haven’t been A-list names, but for the most part, they’ve never been strictly voiceover artists either.

I found Colt a wasted potential. I curious about his narrative because I thought there could be a character development between Ian and Barley because how disconnected and unrelated they were, but him being a step-dad had no impact. If he was just the sheriff and stick with his role he could've been an ok character, like for instance the time he was chasing Ian and Barley it would've been great if he actually run like a Centaur in which that can make him learn that if he wants to bond with his step-sons he must learn how to change himself in order to have a bond and maybe help them throughout their journey. But at the end he changed and suddenly have a positive relations with Ian and Barley because "Good ending".

What really turned me off from seeing the film was its art direction. We have a world where elves, centaurs, and manticores live together in an urban setting. What does the film look like? Exactly like every other Pixar film released in the last five years. It simply seems like they're stagnating creatively. Not just in writing, but also in design. A while back there was this discussion about the main character's design and how it looked like a visual shorthand that resembled other characters like Linguini or Arthur Christmas. Perhaps this is because On some level we know that Pixar is just going through the motions with their film making. Which is sad because they used to show massive steps forward with each new film. Now that the tech has spread to other studios we're seeing other films push forward in its stead. Though maybe Soul will be the next leap for Pixar. We shall see.
@Shoop400

@Mia Leonard I meant that they are just making works more like a machine than a group of artists. They're unflinchingly sticking to methods, and formulas that they know worked in the past. @@mozardthebest I don't think it's really a burnout thing either. It just seems like they're falling into a style. That they're not pushing themselves further with their visuals. Sure there are films like Inside out and Coco that have very creative visuals, but in the end they're still using that stylizied realism that has come to define both Disney, Pixar, and so many other animation studios. They have the means to create films that nobody has ever seen before. They just need to realize that they can if they just start thinking outside that familiar Pixar method.

I actually loved this movie. I think you missed the huge theme of self-trust/confidence, it was really prevalent and worked really well. Also, the father not having a personality was to reflect that Ian never knew him, and just having his legs doesn’t help much. They intended for us to feel left out, because that’s how Ian felt, even at the end where we don’t actually get to see the dad. I thought it was pretty cool that we got to see them awakening the forgotten magic across their journey, even without specifically mentioning what was happening, it would have been pretty dumb if they said “woah magic is making a comeback because of us” which I half expected to be said. Another thing I really enjoyed was they actually mixed two tropes with Barley, he has dumb jock vibes, but he’s a super gamer/d&d nerd. @rustydiamonds771
@rustydiamonds771 4 года назад
My brother said something along these lines after we left the advance screening. Alot of people these days grow up with only one parent. They spend slot of time thinking they had to grow up without role models because they dont have a dad (or mom). They grow up not knowing what to do with themselves because they think they never had a role model. However, alot of people dont realize that other people can be role models as well, not just parents. So basically, I think the film is about role models, not necessarily family or father son relationships. The manticore forgot to tell them about the curse because she never actually gave them instructions. She didnt even give them the map, or any clues on where to find the Phoenix gem, they did that on there own. So why would she have "remembered" to tell them about the curse if she didnt even tell them the other stuff? And barley didnt know about the curse because clearly he didnt know about this particular quest. If he knew there was a curse, shouldn't he also know *how* to find a Phoenix gem, and not have to go to the manticore tavern? Also the brothers dont blame *eachother* for ending up back in their town, *ian* blames barley. Barley never blamed ian. Also "barley finds a fountain being deconstructed by the bad modern world" is sort of a misleading sentence to anyone who hasn't seen the film. Magic vs modern is never an issue in the movie, nor does anyone besides barley take the fountain being destroyed seriously. Had I not seen this film twice already, I would've assumed this movie had a "innovation bad" message just from that sentence. I definitely agree that ian is a boring overdone character type. However, I can't think of many characters similar to barley. The bridge scene definitely did feel tropey, although I cant think of any immediate examples? However a small detail I liked about that scene was the way barley reacted. In most scenarios, barley would said pretty much the same thing, but probably have a nervous smile the whole time. However in the actual movie he looks extremely stressed out about the fact that the rope came off, and that was a small detail that I honestly thought was kinda nice, because they didnt try to turn something that would be terrifying irl into a "haha the rope is gone" joke. The step dad and fairies were little more then small roadblocks. Honestly probably coulda been written out. Though I do appreciate a positive step-parent character for once. Okay sorry, ramble over. I do feel like this film is getting less credit then it deserves by alot of my favorite reviewers, heh. Good video though! Insightful. Made me think about a few things I hadn't considered yet!

I'd say the theme of the film is learning to appreciate what's around and who is around you rather than needing to have a connection with your "real" family. For example, if your parents aren't there for you emotionally, best friends can be like family. And in this case, his older brother was a father figure and taught him a lot about what it means to be a good man/person. It's very personal to the creator of the story as he too lost his father before he had the chance to form memories of him, and also had his brother to lead him.

It's so bizarre. Everyone keeps saying the film is very good - but not as good as Pixar's old works. Everyone just keeps going straight to comparing this film to other films it is not remotely similar to. The fact that its made by Pixar seems to be actively damaging its image. I loved this movie. It's not perfect but it really broke the film formula and I appreciate greatly that. I compare this movie to Frozen in the sense that Frozen was about sisterly love, and this one was about brotherly love.
@chronenojysk5107
@chronenojysk5107 4 года назад
I somewhat disagree. With the comparisons of Sisterly-love and brotherly-love. Both movies have different meaning at the end and one is more impactful than the other. You have a movie about an older sister being scared to interact with his younger sister because she doesn't want to accidentally harm her because of her power so she isolates herself as much as possible, while the other is a boy who never had a father-figure in his life and caused him to struggle to develop socially and maturely in which he wants to resurect his dad in order to understand how to grow up, but at the end he realized that he already expirienced having a male-role-model/father-figure with his older brother. That hits home more than Frozen because more of a relevant issue in society about boys lacking a male-role model in the family which affects them growing up and struggle in adulthood. I think that is largely overshadowed than the plot in general.

I watched this movie with my older brother, and I found it extremely relatable; we both did. It's a movie about two brothers learning that they only have each other, and although they are trying to bring their father back, they realize that they only need each other, and they must learn that they work together very well with each other. At the climax of the film, Ian tells Barley that he never had a dad, but always had him. They must learn that their bond was what got them through all the challenges, Barely being an expert on magic and guiding Ian to become a better wizard but also become a better person. The theme isn't about growing up or seeing a lost loved one; it's brotherhood.

They've lost their minds while announcing Toy Story 4. NOBODY asked for that cash-grab when the franchise should've ended back in 2010; It's unnecessary. Why did you let it win the Oscar?! The Hidden World _deserved_ to win it, but Pixar fucked DreamWorks' last chance!

Okay, think of it like this If Toy story 4 was a cash grab, why did it end off the series in a satisfying way? Would that make shrek 4 a cash grab? The story and concept of living toys had more room to expand in themes and ideas, and the 4th movie followed up as well, with good character arcs, concepts, development, and ultimately ending the franchise off with a satisfying conclusion Ice age 2, 3, 4, and 5 are cash grabs. SPOILERS: As a pixar fan for as long as I can remember, no really, I grew up on two movies, monsters inc and the incredibles, both of which I watched over and over again. I've had to see each 100+ times I did see Onward, and I'd disagree. I think it was great, it felt like a Pixar movie, it felt original as well. It was emotional, yes I cried. Both characters were a bit tropey, sure. I feel like that made them realistic though, it kept things real and considering this was supposed to connect with human emotion it works. I felt a lot of depth and emotion. The family is a major theme but it's also a theme of brotherhood, bravery, trust, adventure, and growth. okay when it comes to tech demonizing, it's perfectly fine and that wasn't a thing lol. It was more about appreciating talents the bad stepdad wasn't bad lol, he was just annoying and the boys didn't like him as a replacement also with the dad's character, he was limited by the fact pixar went forwards with how he didn't have ears or eyes, so his only form of communication was physical touch. if you paid attention the tapping thing was a way to communicate, and other things another sappy part was the emotional connections with the fourth memory, his brother was a coward and didn't say goodbye to his dad because he was scared and regret it for the rest of his life. That's why he was trying to be brave throughout this quest but if you paid attention he wasn't as brave as his brother, who has this "cowardly shy" trope if anything, this feels like another controversial clickbaity video trying to get views. I kept watching to hear an actual valid point but all you said was it was unoriginal, with no evidence that a similar thing happened, oh the characters follow simple tropes, but you never looked deeper in to the characters, oh well the plot's simple, yeah that's kind of the point it's based off of a dnd style quest thing. I feel like this is greater than toy story 4 and coco, it just generally feels on par with my childhood classics. Those are my thoughts, you refuse to watch it again, that's fair. Don't let it stop you from actually noticing the layers under the tropes.

Honestly, Onward just felt like a forced vehicle made by corporate businessmen as an excuse to partner up Chris Pratt (who I loved in Passengers and Parks and Recreation) and Tom Holland (Who's Spider-Man I hate) together, made with little to no effort. Pixar has just ended up like Grunge in terms of quality. It's stories used to be rather complex and introspective, mixing wonder with substance (Wall: E for example), and is often at times felt like an escape from the overall saccharine schmaltz of Disney's main animation division (Yes, I get that Lion King and Hunchback exist, so they are exceptions), but now they have become the very thing they unintentionally provided escapism from. Like the more you can relate it to your own life, the more emotional it is, if that makes sense.

Is Pixar Losing Their Touch...? Well, that's their aim so when we all get old and watch their best films all over again, we cry even more than when we first watched them,

I did enjoy the movie but I feel like they kind of squandered the world a bit, it just wasn't that interesting. The whole idea of modernisation taking the magic out of the world was maybe taken a bit too far, as the setting just felt boring and small. There wasn't the same sense of wonder and beauty with the setting that there was in finding nemo, coco, walle and even the incredibles, with that island. I feel like there was almost no point in the magical fantasy settings.

I don't care what anyone says, i loved this film and the characters involved. It made me cry (but that's sort of a given for Pixar films)

What I love about Toy Story 4 is it’s ending, it feels like it can continue with the story of the toys dealing without Woody, or the story of Woody being free

I have no idea what happened, but Pixar movies don't interest me as much as they did way back when. It's not because the movies are bad, that's a rarity in of itself, but they just don't grab me anymore. Maybe I've just grown too old, maybe I've seen too many Pixar movies, maybe the movies really aren't as good as some of their older stuff. I'll have to think about it a lot more.

Either Pixar don't have great story ideas anymore OR Disney just confiscated their touch? I'd say both.

I figured it out. This movie is exactly like The Spongebob Squarepants movie. Two characters, one bolder than the other, go on a spectacular adventure to get back something lost, all on a time constraint. They even have similar scenes like the bottomless pit.

Pixar's had fantastic films, but I feel like they fell through after the trainwreck that was Brave. Toy Story, Up, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles were great, but then they made 3 cars movies, a BS Finding Nemo sequel, a Toy Story 4 for some reason, The Good Dinosaur (ugh), and so many more duds and meh movies. Inside Out and Coco were good, but there were so many pointless movies in the roster that the hype is gone. At least they're superior to anything Illumination has or will ever cough out...
@fruitlion8
@fruitlion8 4 года назад
Even Brave was underrated in my opinion. It felt more like Pixar attempting to show a fairy tale, and it has charm and scenarios impossible in any of their other films. Now I can't defend every Pixar film - Good Dinosaur looked pretty but was dull, and who could possibly defend Cars 2? - but I feel the majority of their works have a lot more purpose and thought than most films, even if they aren't as strong.
@TheGoldenDunsparce
@TheGoldenDunsparce 4 года назад
@@fruitlion8 Brave has gone through development hell pretty much, changing storyline and even directors if I'm not mistaken. For me at least, it shows. I like the characters, but the plot itself, although different (being at odds with a parent, as well as having both parents and siblings), was all over the place. The "villain" was also shoehorned in all of a sudden. Although he was mentioned, he didn't really do anything except appear in the 3rd act to make things exciting. Maybe I need to watch it again, but my first viewing of it was pretty unimpressed. The Good Dinosaur just made me angry though. That was a mess! D:

alright there a lot I'm gonna say about this review. The main theme of the movie is about confidence. Ian is a socially awkward and very anxious guy by the start and I identified a lot with him tbh. (that's why I went ahead and wrote this comment). Through the movie we see how their father was always a confident guy, not afraid to be himself and do what he likes ugly socks and all. We see how the creatures of the land have stopped being themselves for comfort reasons, a horse that can't run and pixies that can't fly. The main antagonist of the movie is actually internal. once Ian forfeited his fears and anxieties he finally grew to become more like his father. I watched this movie twice once alone and then I made my father watch it with me and it made us both cry. honestly I identified a lot with the themes of this movie. sometimes you're afraid to take a step forward and be who you are. there's a review that conveys the meaning behind this movie far better than any improvised comment I can write. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-91__hVmi5sg.html

I remember finishing this film and thinking “was that...a Pixar movie?” cause for some reason it didn’t feel like it all. It felt like a knock off made by a different company but with Pixar level animation, just because the story and characters felt a bit flat. It’s wasn’t bad! But wasn’t great.

i think a lot of people didn't enjoy the movie bc they thought it would be about fatherhood... but it's about the relationship between the brothers. and it was made beautifully. it's not a cliche about brothers that don't have a close relationship and AT THE END they find out they can count on each other (although ian you know........). it's pretty relatable and the characters, more than in a bunch of pixar movies, have their layers in a way which we totally understand what they're doing even if we don't agree. there's no right or wrong, they're just interacting like that i get that people didn't really conect with this story........ but still, i just think a lot of them are TRYING not to like the movie
