Fun fact: While Pixar successfully saved the movie from being deleted, what most people don't know was that this was for the original direct to video version of Toy Story 2. The original version had a smaller budget with a talking Bullseye, and Jesse as an evil talking cactus and many other differences. This was before John Lasseter got involved as he was still working on A Bug's Life. When he got to see the original footage, he was very upset and felt the story was too predictable and wasn't close to having funny humor and decided to get involved to save the movie. And so after 2 years of animation and almost deleting the entire thing, the footage ended up being deleted anyway in favor of the final film. Disney still wanted to keep the movie's release date of 1999 but Pixar rewrote the script on a weekend and had to re-animate the entire movie for 9 MONTHS! Unlike most Pixar movies which take 3 to 4 years to animate. And yet somehow, after rushing everything with the script and animation, it ended up becoming a sequel that's better than the original by many.

The thing about Linux, is that it assumes that YOU are the smart one and YOU know what you're doing at all times.

It's pretty crazy to think that one of the best sequels ever made almost became lost media.

A few months ago I almost lost a 30 minute short film I've been working on for the past 8 months only by myself, I already had it finished but was still tweaking some details when my whole computer just crashed, I tried to recover the data in the hard drive but it was toasted, imagine all that time editing it, scoring it, convincing actors and people to act on it, filming on harsh places with tight schedules only to lost it all in seconds, it was the worst moment of my life, not to be dramatic but honestly I just wanted to die, the thing is after a few days of deep depression, I remembered I rendered an early cut of the film to send it to my brother on Dropbox, and when I checked there it was, for some reason I didn’t even reacted that much, but I'm still glad I got to recover it. ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP!!

I made this mistake on a mac once. I accidentally put a space after the first "/". I didn't realize what I had done until parts of the UI started disappearing. Fun times...

I just worked on a short animation for 30 minutes straight and I was getting ready to finish it, when...WHEN...I accidentally right-clicked the software, it FROZE, and the only thing I could do was to *boop* CLICK OUT. Now I'm on a Mental Breakdown crying the shit out of myself because OF WHAT GOD DAMN HAPPENED. This video...this video was what got me to redo it again.

The guy who deleted everything actually posted some of the strange things they did to him afterwards on his inst-agram profile “badigtoy”, you gotta cover it, some really crazy stuff on there. He wasn’t seen there again.

Quick Tip: Once files are deleted from your drive. DO NOT put newer files into the drive. It will replace your hope of restoring those data. Then, use any recovery software to recover those files.

I've heard this story told and retold half a dozen times, and each time it is both fascinating and terrifying.

This is one of my favorite stories, as it always encourages people to back up their files.

Interestingly, when the files were recovered, the movie was erased and they started over anyways as they wanted to change the plot of the movie.

Linux is not a "command line operating system.". There are multiple desktop managers that you can install. Microsoft Windows also has commands that you can use to delete your files and Mac OS is also a Unix-based OS that uses the same terminals as Linux. The majority of the internet runs on Linux and it offers very robust solutions. Why did the systems technician or engineer delete those files "manually"? Because loading them into a graphical interface would have likely taken much, much longer due to the number of files. The lesson here is always backup your files, likely using one of the many robust open source solutions built on Linux.

'Trash bin' is a feature of whatever file browser you use, not the operating system. Windows also has a command line and it also has a delete command that deletes files irreversibly.

And that's why today the rm - rf / command requires the --no-perserve-root flag as a failsafe - so you can't accedently delete all of your files.

Deletion doesn't actually delete files, it just flags them as not existing so they later can be overwritten. So they could possibly have restored it from the server if they were lucky.

When I was 16, I was helping an old lady photographer to reinstall Windows. She took photos professionally for other people and had customers. We moved all the important files from C to D disk. Then I started formatting all partitions, only to realize that C and D are the SAME DRIVE just split. We somehow recovered some images, while some were lost. I never had this amount of anxiety in my life ever again.
