Is Reusing a Coffee Filter Practical?

What happens when you reuse a coffee filter multiple times? In this video, I reuse a coffee filter 13 times and realize that it might actually be a great strategy to better control brew time. Join me as I go through the experiment and share my thought process throughout it!

Interesting information. I do reuse the paper filter. After the filter is used,I rinse carefully the coffee ground using tap water. Then put it in my ultrasonic cleaning equipment, dry in the air,put in my drying cabinet with humidity around 55( to avoid any mold growth),then use it the other day. For a certain paper brand, can use till 3x;another brand use only 2x. Usually the paper is not torn but the seam is opened (the powder may leak through this weak joint). Reason of reuse is to avoid wasting of natural resource.

Interesting experiment but I think I'll just stay with single use filters, ha. I had been brewing with the TK 30/60 method quite happily but recently tried the Matt Winton 5-pour method. It's been outstanding and I get consistently great cups using it, which is odd since it's not too different from the TK method. Whatever, it seems to work so I'm a happy camper. Nice to see you again!

So nice to hear from you Gary!! I'm indeed back at it again and aim to keep it consistent moving forwards. I'm with you when it comes to reusing filters. It's a lot of hassle and if I ended up reusing filters, I would probably use a fabric filter instead to keep things consistent. Even though the increase in brew time is interesting, it's also not the most practical and accurate way of doing it. I'll check out the Matt Winston 5 pour technique, haven't heard of it but always down to try new techniques!!

It's interesting and I suppose if you could get consistent results it might be worth extending the life of a filter. I could see this be useful in times where certain paper goods might be harder to come by or maybe money is a little tighter but I think it's way more hassle than it's worth unless you're in a pinch. One thing I would worry about is possibilities of mold or other contamination being introduced. I doubt it's a significant concern but it at least seems possible.

Yea, its a great way to extend a filters life when money is tight or you are waiting for your next batch of filter. For what it is worth, I inspected my filter before every brew and did not notice any weird growth. Perhaps keeping it under 5 or so reuses would minimize that issue!

The only question I have is whether or not its really better for the environment. If it truly is, then I think it's worth doing. I wish someone would do a controlled study of the amount of water required to properly and completely wash out the filters several times vs. the amount of water used every time a new filter was used (from growing the trees until they can be harvested and so forth). Personally, I will reuse a coffee filter up to 5 times, but sometimes I prefer to just throw it out and brew with a new filter to save time and effort, and I really do wonder if it makes a significant difference, but I suspect it actually does.

Just wash out the filter with water like within an hour after it cooled off. I do that and the filters look almost brand new when i re use one. I didnt do it 13 times, but i might try it now lol.

A week ago I chatted with a friend of reusing filters. She tried it but it was torn after second time. Hope you can reuse it many many times

Tell your friend that she should try drying it out in the V60 before removing the grinds. This way, the filter doesn't rip that easily.

Nice experiment. I'll try reusing, but the way you clean (letting the coffee dry) seems to make it "stain" the filter even more if you would to try to rinse it right away... But thanks for the encouragement. My Hario 100 filters will last now for a year haha

Cheers, I actually tried scooping out the grinds before the filter dried too!! What I noticed is that the wet filter can easily rip if not handled with care and I could never remove all of the grinds when it was wet. If you find a better method then let me know :D

@@brewinghabits thank you for your response. Instead of scooping I tried knocking out the main part in the trash and then just rinsing the residual coffee in the sink with the hot water I just boiled to make coffee. I think this way I was able to keep it clean without staining the paper too much.

@@iquintani I'll give that a whirl the next time I brew with the V60, for scienceeee!!
