Hey Adam, great you are going to Rio and I hope you enjoy it a lot! Honestly, these have been the safety tips about Brazil my whole life. I could include some more, but I think they are more common sense: - avoid accepting drinks from strangers, no matter how nice they are to you. - always meet girls in public spaces, be suspicious if they like chatting online but won’t show you their pictures/video (usually scammers) - avoid deserted roads and going to a favelas by yourself The above is more a ‘have common sense” thing, you will see that Brazil is really not as unsafe as people paint it to be! I hope you have an amazing time in Rio!

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy them! I bought it in an online T Shirt shop called Chico Rei in Brazil (in fact, most if not all the T Shirts you see me wearing are from there). They do take a while to deliver, but if you are renting a AirBnb, maybe you could order now and have the host save it for you? Maybe they ship internationally too, but I have always ordered it to be delivered at friends’ homes in Brazil, so I wouldn’t be able to tell.

I understand the concern, but there might be places you are able to go and see mostly locals. I recommend the Feira de Tradições Nordestinas Luiz Gonzaga (I have an old video about it, if you are interested) that is mostly visited by locals and it would be safe to visit, just go by uber or taxi

Thanks so much for sharing! ❤ i have a question about driving. Is it difficult the parking situation? I am going to an event in the gym in the north of the city but im staying in ipanema. But im also visiting a couple of places like the aquarium and library, do you think is worth renting the car or just doing the taxi. Specifically for the event we will be driving almost everyday to the stadium.
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 7 месяцев назад
I would use ubers, 99 taxi (app), or just normal taxis, instead of driving, tbh. Parking is a bit of a pain in Rio, usually it will be street parking and there is something called “flanelinhas”, which are some people there just asking for money to “watch” your car. If you are able to, just use the usual car sharing/taxi options, you will be better off, I believe.

Thanx for those hints! I have a question though: how widespread is the usage of the English language among Brazilian and Cariocas in general? I don't speak Portuguese, I'm trying to learn it a bit, but I don't expect to be proficient in Portuguese by the time I'll get there (in September actually) for sure....cheers from Montréal, Canada
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda Год назад
Hi Dave! Usually in hotels you will have people speaking English. Some of the touristic attractions and more upscale restaurants too. However, the majority of Brazilians, especially in the hospitality industry, won’t speak English very well. That said, Brazilians are usually eager to help and will try to communicate with gestures and maybe a couple of words in English they might know. The only faux pas would be to assume people will understand Spanish. It is deemed quite rude to be spoken to directly with Spanish, unless you explain you don’t speak Portuguese, but could speak a bit of Spanish (if that would be the case for you). Other than that, google translator and some basic words in Portuguese should take you a long way :)

Thank you very much for your video.. we are visiting Rio in may… I wanted to know is mirante Dona Marta safe also for example during sunset? What is the best way to get there? Kind regards Niko
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 4 месяца назад
Hi Niko, I’m glad you liked the video 🥰. For the Mirante Dona Marta, my suggestion is that you ask the person that took you to wait a few minutes (even better if you can have someone that can stay around and take you back down, as you might have a hard time calling an Uber/taxi from that area) so that you can see how it looks like. If you are the only person there, I would advise caution, but if you see a police car and other groups of people, it might be ok to stay for a while. May is out of season, so the police reinforcement might not be there anymore. On the other hand, this year is election year, so the mayor is probably keen on showing reinforced security around town. Do make sure you sense check and if it looks like it is too deserted, I wouldn’t risk it. Have a lovely trip to Brazil!

Hey @tripsterpanda Thank you for your video. Taxi Comun are the yellow taxis with a blue stripe? And what are the machines you showed used for? To buy tickets? You can pay in the Taxi? Thanks Again 🙏
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 7 месяцев назад
Hey Kevin, yes, Taxi Comum is the standard one. They will still charge a fixed price from the airport but it is usually cheaper than the so called executive ones. The machines you mean the ones at the 8:30 mark? Those are self service totems for requesting the taxis. You put the neighborhood you are going to, the number of people and lugagge and it gives you the price, which you can pay right away. The introvert in me love to use those instead of needing to talk to people 😅
@kevincurtis9115
@kevincurtis9115 7 месяцев назад
Thank You @@tripsterpanda 🙏 Very Kind of you to reply 🙂 So the machine will give you a receipt to show the driver? And can you book these taxi's in advance? To take advantage of the return discount? And are the metered taxis a different colour?
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 7 месяцев назад
@@kevincurtis9115 my pleasure :) . Yes, it spits out a receipt with the neighboorhood's name and the amount paid. When I got the taxi, I remember they gave me a business card with a table of the main prices in the touristic areas and a phone number to call and request a taxi. mentioning you got the card should give you the discount in the price. These taxis are the metered taxis, it is the same you would get out (Taxi Comum means Common taxi in Portuguese). The thing is that coming out of the airport they only do fixed prices, and it is a bit more expensive than Uber, but it is less of a hassle, in my opinion. The executive ones I think are white or red, but I wouldn't know, never even asked for the price, it feels too expensive to just get a ride to the south zone.

Going to be visiting Rio soon and was wondering with all the scammers, where do you typically withdraw money from do you go into a bank or just stop by an ATM during the day?
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda Год назад
ATMs in Rio are usually inside a bank or in a closed pod, it is not like in many countries where they are just outside on the streets. Withdrawing money, should be fairly safe, just be aware if someone is around paying attention on you, and yes, maybe avoid evenings and nights if possible. That said, in restaurants and attractions, you will be able to pay with card, so you wouldn’t necessarily need a lot of cash, except for street vendors.O

This is amazing thank you! ☺️ I guess my only question is, can tourists buy the pink RioCard+Mais/Expresso so we can use the VLT as well, or are we stuck in Giro Cards? If so, how can we pay to use VLT? Thanks.
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 10 месяцев назад
Hi! Thank you for being here! To answer your question, in most VLT stations, there will be totems where you can buy the card and recharge it. You can pay with card or cash, but sometimes foreign cards are hard to use in Brazil, so take a bit of cash with you just in case. You can also buy the Bilhete Único (“Single Ticket”) which allows you to use both VLT and subway with the same card. It is similar to the European system, so if you are caught in the VLT without paying, there can be a fine of BRL 170 and you need one card per person if you are traveling with other people.

@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 7 месяцев назад
Hi Fabienne! I personally like Vivo very much. I think it varies on which region you are in Brazil, but I have never had issues with them. Also, I think there are no mobile sim card shops in the airport, you can try the newspaper stands, they usually have them. Another possible loop to jump through (buying a sim card in Brazil is a bit of a pain), is being able to register the number. You need a CPF (you can get your number at the Brazilian consulate in your jurisdiction, even if you are coming as a tourist) or I think Claro has an option to register your sim card with your passport number.
@fabiennebello7836

@@tripsterpanda you are a star, thanks for the quick answer ☺ Regarding the CPF, do you know if I need it to visit Fernando de Noronha? I read different things online and I'm quite confused about this matter. Thanks again 💛
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 7 месяцев назад
You don’t need a CPF and can do things without it, but it does make your life easier/cheaper. For example, you can buy domestic flights on Brazilian websites instead of their international counterparts and it is usually cheaper. But to answer your question directly, yes, you are able to visit Fernando de Noronha without a CPF, as you can use your passport number for reservations and flights

Thinking about traveling to Bazil or other 3rd world countries is following: Maybe there is also a potential risk visiting 1st and 2nd world countries BUT, the motivation to get in a criminal confict based on social/financial reasons is lower. For example if i get abused by someone in London who is maybe against my person the chance is for everone in this city equally to get in this conflict. But if i am for example in Rio and the whole city sees me as a possible rich tourist the i am in the goup of people which are especially targeted by such kind of ciminals. How do you see this point?
@tripsterpanda
@tripsterpanda 7 месяцев назад
I don’t necessarily agree with that. There are safer and less safe places, of course, but comparing for example mainly big tourist cities: London, Paris, Rio, and New York. In al of them you will be targeted as a tourist. Pickpocketing in Europe is completely out of control now, I would assume it is the same in NY. As per the other types of crime you hear about in Rio, they usually happen in places tourists will not be in. It is the same about stabbing in London poorer neighbourhoods, Paris has some really rough unsafe areas, especially as a woman, and I believe NY has some places where crime is high as well, like Bronx. The difference I see in Rio is that the own citizens will diss the country to other people, but you won’t see British, French, or Americans doing it. This cultural aspect (Brazilians telling people Brazil is dangerous) gives people the false sense that Brazil is more unsafe, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that. I hope I was able to explain my opinion properly and that you are not put off of visiting Brazil. It is an amazing country, well worth the visit 🥰
