Díficil tema, los "lanzas" ellos estan en todo el mundo, solo que hoy es muy representativo en Chile como en Italia también y escuela para lanzas. Lamentable pero es así en Chile.
Hola tío Jon, la verdad que las noticias crean una sicosis colectiva mostrando solo delincuencia y violencia...pero yo viviendo en población y trabajando por todo Santiago (en terreno) decidí hace un par de años atrás no ver más noticias y vivo tan feliz ..es cierto, hay que andar por todo país con cuidado y listo... andando con cuidado no te pasará nada ( habiendo excepciones claro), pero los medios de comunicación solo nos meten miedo para controlar la población exagerando las cosas
pienso lo mismo, la gente se pone super exagerada por la cobertura de los medios, habiendo vivido toda la vida en Santiago (tengo 31), solo he visto un lanza - en Av. Salvador - y creo que un robo en un restorán en el centro, pero habiendo trabajado en el centro muchos años, encuentro que eso es nada. He estado mucho más asustada en la noche en ciudades en otros países, por ejemplo en San Francisco y Los Angeles en EE.UU., que está lleno de homeless (como no tienen salud pública los dejan en la calle tirados...), en la noche daba mucho susto salir, de hecho en los hostales donde estuve no recomendaban salir en la noche en ciertos lugares...
Concuerdo contigo, en los 3 años que viajé de mi casa al Instituto (que queda en pleno Santiago Centro), nunca fui victima de un robo, y tan sólo presencié 1 o 2 robos como mucho. Igual creo que nunca está de más ser precavido. Saludos! :)
Lanza or achorro are those that running grab jewellery camera or whatever valuable is on you and the pickpockets are the carteristas. These guys get you with no pain at all. Santiago is like any other cities in the world. Good and bad neighborhood. I live in Winnipeg Manitoba and is the same

In my experience, in the 90s and beginning of the 2000s Santiago was less safe than it is now. I remember as a high schooler walking through the paseo Ahumada and being hyper-aware that I could be pick-pocketed at any time; in those years (I'm talking around 2003) downtown was known for that, and you had to be smart about it. But now things have changed a lot; I worked in different government agencies in the past 5 years, all located downtown, and I NEVER saw any robbery. I walked everywhere and never felt unsafe, not even at night, which is a change compared to my high school or even university years. Of course you have to be smart as to not showcase jewelery, having your backpack open, not paying attention while using your phone or camera in public, etc., but that's the same things you would do in any other major city worldwide as a tourist. I've travelled a lot and honestly, I felt way worse being in San Francisco at night (very scary!!), or even in some parts of London! And my father-in-law was pick-pocketed in Italy last month. Santiago has progressed by leaps and bounds in the past 2 decades.

I do agree with you ,Frisco at night is a real booby trap ,even at Powell & Market where the most central cable car terminal is, the average pedestrian must be careful when the night falls...and in London , go visit The British Museum not too far from Russell Square , if you are not aware of what's going on around your feet , you might be the prey of the yobs who will ever be telling you "Dis my endz , so do not complain" when they mugger you as nimbly as a greyhound entering a box junction....
Yes, Santiago was pretty unsafe back in the 90s, now I’ve walking at 3am feeling quite confident that everything is fine. I guess this is precisely why people react so vigorously to any news regarding crime, because is rare on their lives but prevalent on tv. That disconnection create a misplaced anxiety that has people believing that we live in a unsafe city.

Igual otro consejo es que cuando vayas a otro pais es muy importante manejar el idioma y si no lo manejas tener un amigo de confianza o familiar que te guíe en tu estancia en ese pais
I experienced two pick pocketing attempts in one week there in Santiago. Both were whilst using the public transport. One on the subway and one on the bus. The pickpockets were Chilean and not foreigners (Colombian). They were pretty rough in their attempts and I felt them easily. One even apologised to me whilst he had his fingers in my front pocket. It was surreal, but these guys don't want to work, they are just parasites who live off the hard work of honest people. Sadly, when they get caught, the judges release them back almost immediately. In Chile the cops can't charge you with a crime , they have to take you in front of a judge who makes a decision, usually in the the criminal's favour.
From what I've heard, Santiago is an averagely safe city similar to some European cities, in terms of theft and happy Thanksgiving to Megan and any other Canadian friends/family you know!!! also, any Chileans in Toronto know of a good Chilean restaurant/store? Or maybe, you're willing to cook for me! hahaha! :P
You are definitely lucky...Last friday I was conversing with some Nanaimo guys who are visiting Chile and they told me whenever they head off to Ontario ,they taste Chilean food at "La Rosa Chilena"(788 Wilson Ave.North York ,ON, M3K 1E2 ) Undoubtedly you ain't gonna get mickeys , poutines ,double-doubles or butter tarts there ,but yummy empanadas and humitas (flavored corn paste wrapped in corn leaves) will ever be available ...

Hello Jon, I lived in Santiago several years ago and never had a problem, I even walked with my cell phone in m hand and nothing happened. I think the key to avoid problems is to walk like you are "angry" at something, that way nobody messes with you, I applied this "recipe" everytime I felt I was in a bad neighboorhood or when I walked late at night in the streets. Definitely agree, that's another great security tip. Walk with your head up and act like you know what you're doing-- criminals always pick on weak/easy targets and are less likely to target you if you appear confident and strong.
The wise advice "be smart" I lived the last 16 years on florida (USA) And Calgary (Canada) And both country's have bad and good people and me and my family avoid to go to some places because everybody know like bad places , and everybody know Csnada is one of the safest places in the word but still people been murderd and robed Just be smart besides Chilean people always like tourists
Cerro Santa Lucia is at the heart of Chilean history from the very beginning of the Spanish conquistadors. Chile is safe or used to be when I visited since 2010 on back, my family lives there and I grew up there. It is one of the safest cities in Latin America. Some taxis are crooked around the world and prey on tourist. In Chile they are safe and most of the times they don't rip you off, or if they do it is for just a few dollars, not much, these taxis used to use their wipers and turning signals a certain way to jump start the meter. It is very difficult to tell but I noticed my rides were different prices for the same distance, but it was not very much. But I did have one guy (twenty+ years ago) charge me $40 for a twenty minute ride to the Airport, about twenty years ago, he was a colectivo (a taxi that picks up other passengers as you take a ride) which should of cost $1 back then for the same distance. He wasn't even allowed to drive to the airport, I had also given him about a $35 tip for helping me with my dad's car for a couple of hours and he still ripped me off. I was going late to the airport and he was the only one around since I was in a very rural part near Santiago. But even in Berlin I got pick pocketed and tried to get ripped off in Amsterdam. In Chile and many other places around the world they work as a network, usually it is more than one, sometimes as many as eight, and you have no idea what happened, they can pass your things around so fast it is no use. A Canadian got killed in Valparaiso recently because the confronted two thief on a motorcycle, mostly they are gangs from other countries. With the pick pocketing someone might trip you when you go after them. The government has tried to keep it a control on it, and kicked out many violent or bad foreigners out of Chile but as long as you are careful and don't show off with a Rolex, it is safe, some areas where there are a lot of tourist is were they like to hang around. The police in Chile is very good but they need to help English speaking tourists more but some people get offended that tourist don't know Spanish, which is very stupid. For the most part I feel very safe in Chile. There are lot of people that have come from Colombia and other countries that have brought their crimes with them. In Thailand some tuk tuks or three wheel taxis take you to a jeweler place and drug with a drink and sell you junk. But for the most part Chileans are very nice and helpful, except there are always a small minority that takes advantage. My father once left his wallet in the back of a taxi in Santiago, it had all his documents and $500, the taxi returned a few minutes later with it, and my father gave him a $50 tip. but bad things can happen even in Miami or D.C. Scams are prevalent in every country. When you travel abroad just take what you need or don't mind loosing too much.

Hey Jon! I'm planning on heading to Santiago to teach in February. I have seen a lot of things about robberies and crime; but I've also lived in/visited places like Guatemala and Bolivia which can be equally if not more dangerous. I love all of the tips you gave to prevent getting robbed, they're certainly useful. If someone is really concerned I would recommend they take some kind of security training course that can prepare them for every possible scenario! My general rule of thumb is just to just be aware not only of the people around you but of all of the things you are carrying on your person. We've all had that moment where we thought we lost our phone or wallet but it turns out we just left it in another room... don't let that happen to you when you're walking down the street or in a bus or train! There's nothing to be afraid of if you are aware, ready to react, and keep an eye on people. Another tip is to look behind you occasionally for people who may be following-- if you are suspicious, stop into a store and come back out to check or simply turn around and walk towards them (even say hello!). Many criminals won't just grab from you at random; they work in teams and will follow and watch you for a few minutes to see what your habits are and if you are a good target. Tipping them off that you are aware of their presence makes them much less likely to go after you!
Bolivia and Guatemala are way more dangerous for tourists than Santiago is; I did a backpacking trip through Bolivia in my 20s and had plenty of friends that got robbed there, in markets and atop buses. I think robberies here in Chile are over-hyped; if you take the measures you point here, I assure you - unless you're very unlucky - nothing will happen! Santiago is pretty safe, and it's a great city to visit :) be aware though that is pretty hot in February! Is not strange now to have days over 33 Celsius (90 F) during the summer, so try to get a place with AC (is not widespread as it is in the US) and/or a pool.

Como toda gran ciudad, hay zonas seguras y otras inseguras, a diferencia de otras ciudades de América latina, en Santiago no te van a matar por robarte un celular como pasa en otros países de America. Puede que Chile sea el país "mas seguro" de América latina, PERO no significa que no te puede pasar nada, no existe el país sin delincuentes y en cualquier país te pueden robar, Chile no es la excepcion, siempre hay que estar precavido, ahora si ven carabineros en la zona o camaras de seguridad puedes sacar la camara y el celular sin problemas.

Sí visitas santiago, los museos son una excelente opción, como el de historia natural, bellas artes, MAC, de trenes, militar... etc, es una buena idea para dar un vistazo cultural a la ciudad.

Hay un montón de lugares en santiago que podria ser muy entretenido vicitar, por ejemplo, reservas como río clarillo o Aguas de San Ramón, museos como el precolombino, el museo de la memoria o si vienes con niños los que se encuentran en el parque de Quinta Normal, o el MIM ( este es muy entretenido para los niños)
Santiago es seguro si se toman las precauciones generales, como en cualquier gran ciudad. Pasa que la prensa chilena crea en la población una sensación de inseguridad general, mostrando siempre delitos y homicidios como si esto fuera un país sin ley. Exactamente no ser estupido, no pecar de inocente y de confiado, eso aplicarlo en toda ciudad del mundo y no se pasarán malos ratos, generalmente. Saludos..
y es un video un poco antes del estallido social.. luego de la revuelta sumado a la pandemia santiago ha cambiado mucho, a mi no me ha pasado nada en el centro porque ando atento y alejado de cualquier situación sospechosa, aun asi encuentro que es muy seguro sobre todo hacia el oriente

I'd never walk in Santiago (or New York/ Chicago) with my backpack or purse on my back...always in front of me. Big cities, many more opportunities to get mugged. The most distracted you look, the most you become a target.
Santiago is pretty safe, keep your money out of reach and if you're driving be super aware of your surroundings especially after dark and lock those doors! Oh and try not to look like a tourist, that will help you a lot!

Hola compadrito Jon..los lanzasos obedecen mayormente a nuestros propios descuido , lo cual es observado por el lanza.Hay cosas que son de sentido común en muchas partes del mundo, como..no ir a barrios peligrosos..no andar exhibiendo cámaras relojes o joyas ..tratar de andar en grupo..no cambiar o contar dinero en la calle. Pero como recomendación lo mejor es hacer amistad con algún en este caso con algún chileno o chilena y que te acompañe en tus recorridos . Por cierto, no dejes de comerte un buen sanguche en la fuente Mardoqueo del barrio Yungay, calle Libertad 551....quedarás pochito..se te echará la yegua..quedarás peinado para atrás, o unas ricas empanadas en la fuente suiza de plaza ñuñoa. En santiago te faltan lugares, como barrio concha y toro, barrio yungay, parque quinta normal, museo de los derechos humanos, GAM, lastarria, barrio italia, etc..
Few months ago I was passing by Santa Lucia Hill and from the distance I glimpsed a couple of guys wandering around looking towards three senior brazilian tourists who were taking pictures with their mobiles, quite unaware of their surroundings and the people around them. I decided to walk towards the tourists to warn them about the area is plenty of pickpockets, but when I was still about 100 meters away from them the pickpockets made their move and took one of the tourists' mobile and ran away. I was not only frustrated for not getting there on time to prevent the incident and but also ashamed for living in a country where the crime rate hasn't decreased at the rate we deserve. Unfortunately, even though Santiago is a quite safe city it's still a city in developing country, so if you look tourist or just a foreigner you can't chill when walking down the streets in the downtown area. Always keep your eyes open, check the people who is surrounding you and try not to expose your money and belongings for a long time.
esa es una verdad innegable, en todos los paises del mundo abiertos a la inmigración no toda la gente que llegue irá con buenas intenciones (la cual se suma a los delincuentes locales), pasa en Chile, pasa en USA, pasa en todos lados, pero la solución no es criminalizar a los extrangeros, la solución es poner buenas barreras tanto físicas como legales para filtrar quien entra (además de procuparse de la delincuencia local obviamente) en el caso de Chile, las barreras físicas están bien pero las barreras legales son pésimas.
@@icebear8773 Aunque lleguen extranjeros con las mejores intenciones eso igual le termina por hacer un daño al país, igual saturan el sistema de salud, el educacional, agotan las fuentes de trabajo, se mestizan con nuestra gente, adoptamos sus costumbres y nos volvemos minoría. Esta bien recibir un porcentaje pequeño de inmigrantes, pero de ahí a recibir a 800.000 Haitianos, 1.000.000 de venezolanos y otro tanto de colombianos prácticamente nos terminó por extinguir. One of my aunts was in Chile in September and thankfully had no issues, but then my other aunt went at the beginning of October and she was robbed by two guys dressed in camouflage clothes.

Depends on which part of Santiago. I’ve lived in Lo Barnechea for two years and haven’t had any problems with crime. But... other parts of Santiago are not as safe. Just which Chileans were better drivers and not so nosy.
Correr detrás de un lanza es arriesgado, es cierto, pero normalmente los lanzas no suelen ir armados. A veces es buena idea correr detrás de ellos. Si no puedes alcanzarle, con un poco de suerte, la gente al rededor podrá ayudarte de reducirlo. No es recomendable hacer esto si estás en un lugar solitario o si notas que el lanza no anda solo. Una vez sali persiguiendo a un lanza que me robó el celular. Una persona me "ayudó" indicándome el camino para seguirlo. Segundos después me di cuenta que era su compañero porque me señaló el camino equivocado y cuando me voltié, echó a correr.
Visiten los museos, el de historia está cerca de la plaza de armas y el Museo de historia natural está en la Quinta Normal, es un lugar muy bonito de áreas verdes. Cerca está el Museo de la memoria, no puedes dejar de visitarlo.!!!😊😊😉😉
The south and west sides of the city have some areas that are definitely not safe. But nothing too extreme, especially if you're coming from the U.S. The biggest issue in Santiago for most tourists is petty crime, which is vastly overblown in my opinion.
I live in Santiago and nothing bad has happened to me, I would say so, always look at the people around you, thats a good tip and to keep your phone safe. Btw that one wheel looks so fun xD
Conozco ciudades en USA, Europa y Canada; por mi experiencia personal Santiago de Chile esta en rango MEDIO (no es la más segura pero tampoco una de las más inseguras). Las ciudades canadienses se "sienten" y son (para mi) de las ciudades más seguras para visitar.

Hola Jon, yo soy hija de gringos, al igual que tu bebé y e crecido con la cultura gringa y chilena y al ver tus vídeos veo algo que también veo en mi familia, recién descubrí tu canal y la verdad me parece muy interesante pero particularmente con este video veo que los turistas siempre dicen que los taxis les roban, que les roban el teléfono etc... en chile la cultura es algo muy especial en cosas muy pequeñas y algo muy notorio por lo menos por en centro de santiago, santa Lucía donde vive mi papá al ver a una persona alta, de ojos claros y en tu caso de pelo rojo es algo muy inusual y más aún si va acompañado de una chica rubia, mi papá estaría completamente en desacuerdo con mi opinión pero yo hablando con mis amigos chilenos, uno altiro lo ve y se nota cuando uno es gringo o turista y incluso si hablas español al final no depende de being smart en chile depende de como te vez y en como te presentas al mundo y es algo que uno al final no puede cambiar, a mi no me van a dejar de distinguir por ser rubia o alta, porque una persona que esta buscando robar, inmediatamente va a pensar, ah! Ese tipo no es de aquí y si es de aquí es un cuico con plata y lastimablemente así es en chile, y es algo que por lo menos a mi familia no les e logrado dar a entender, supongo que es algo de cultura y cuando uno crece con la cultura chilena uno lo puede ver

Gente, esto que ven lamentablemente no volverá a ser así en un buen tiempo. Chile se encuentra tomando medidas de un toque de queda, con las fuerzas armadas violando los derechos humanos de las personas, por manifestarse contra todas las injusticias del gobierno. El chile y Santiago de ahora es otro.
