Good content, good videos, thanks for sharing Yusuf. I recently started to read Save the Cat so I can´t have a strong opinion on it just yet, but mostly I heard very good things. Because structure doesn´t mean the full story, it´s just a blueprint to build a house, how you build it well, that another story. But having a blue print it´s great. Btw have you read Save the cat! Strikes back? Are they souposed to be read in order?
I've read the "Save the Cat!" books, and they're invaluable for new screenwriters who want to learn about story structure. (Incidentally, one of my rom-com scripts has a female protagonist, and I didn't notice any inherent changes I needed to make to work on her journey.) However, I don't think any writers should be enslaved by the StC! format; I sense even Blake Snyder would feel likewise. Many writers I know, including noted sitcom scribe Ken Levine, despise StC!, and I can understand why, but as long as you make its guidelines malleable rather than rigid, it can assist your work.
Isn't assuming female and non binary protagonists don't fit the heros journey in itself sexist?? I found this whole bit out of place in a discussion about screenwriting technique
There’s some interesting feminist critique of the hero’s journey that I would encourage you to check out - if only to round yourself out as a writer. I included it because - with the demand for more female-centric stories - a different approach may be needed for some of us who traditionally write more male-centric narratives.
Thanks for the informative video. By way of feedback, I don't believe that the part about sexism added anything of value to the viewer. Besides that, good work.
