How to Write the Perfect Pitch Deck!

Hey Screenwriters!
One of the MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS a screenwriter needs to MASTER is the PITCH DECK.
PITCH DECKS are central to CONVEYING YOUR STORY IDEA TO PRODUCERS, DIRECTORS AND INVESTORS. And IF DONE CORRECTLY may help you SELL A SCRIPT BEFORE YOU EVEN WRITE IT.
OVER THE LAST 10-YEARS or so, I've gotten GOOD at writing pitch decks, and IN THIS VIDEO I want to share with you my SECRETS to writing the PERFECT PITCH DECK.

This video is brilliant. I came in having absolutely no idea what a Pitch Deck was. After being asked to provide one, I had to quickly find out what was involved. This was so helpful, easy to follow and the template was fantastic. Thank you.

I'm just binge watching now. Great stuff man! STC is my go to book. I haven't been writing for several years but getting back into it and never knew about pitch decks. Did you cover how to get an agent or entertainment lawyer in one of your videos? Or do you act as your own agent?

What a great video! Thank you so much for this. I have a question. How do i send my pitch deck to producers without it being unsolicited? Do i send out a query letter first? How should i conduct myself once the pitch deck is ready? Thanks again :-)

Hi Yusuf, thank you so much... Tell us some information about copyright registration. For example, I want to send a pitch deck or a script to a japanese film company but I'm concerned about copyright (or other countries). How should I do to prevent this probablity. Remind that many countries have copyright office but it isn't clear how to do this job. Not similar to America in which can be registered in WGA or library of Congress. Thanks a lot

Hello! To be honest, I'm not sure. I've never run into this specific scenario before. The best thing is to always consult an entertainment attorney if you have any concerns.

Nothing has changed regarding the fundamentals of pitch decks, but there has been a heated debate on whether they are needed. Many feel that most producers won’t ask you for this, so developing one may be time wasted. Others (like me) think that some concepts must be visually explained. So, I suggest using pitch decks for ideas where a logline alone doesn’t do a concept justice.

QUESTION: Should the script be written/finished before you make these pitch decks and send them out? Or can you send these out if you only have a short treatment? I'm thinking maybe there should be a slide called something like "status of project" where you state what status the script/idea is in? Seems like the producer reading this would want to know this up front? Maybe not? Thank you so much for this information!! So helpful!

90% of the time, you’ll need to have the script written - unless you have a reputation as someone who can be guaranteed to knock out a great draft. The exception is (usually) when you are asked to pitch for a specific idea or IP. For example, if Marvel taps you on the shoulder, saying, “Hey, we’ve read some of your stuff, and we like it. Can you pitch us a movie for Squirrel Girl?” Even then, they will likely ask for a formally written treatment. Pitch documents like the one I’ve provided are great for capturing the energy and mood of an idea. But it’s rare to get paid to write the first draft. Those days are long gone.

@@blasterbattles4066 I'm not going to be much help on this one, I'm afraid. I've never put together a film investor pitch deck in this regard. As a screenwriter, I leave the hunting for cash to producers and directors. My pitches are specifically for broadcasters and producers who I hope to excite with my ideas.
