What is up all you Pokémon maniacs out there! PikiPikaPapa is here asking, Is Scarlet & Violet BETTER Then Sword & Shield? In order to answer the why question I did a deep dive into Sword & Shield's release schedules for a head to head comparison. We will look at when all the begoinning sets in Sword & Shield and compare that to where we are at in Scarlet & Violet. Hit the nail on the head again. Scarlet & Violet is so underrated. When we look back years from now there may not be an argument of which era is better. Maybe compare both these era's to Sun & Moon and XY.

I love Paradox Rift and think Vivid Voltage is absolute trash. The ETB box art with Pikachu for VV is great, but I really don’t get hyped for fat rainbow Pikachu. On the other hand I get the lack of big name older Pokemon for PR and I am a gen 1 guy, but the artwork in that set is phenomenal and I like the styling of the Ancient/Future cards. I could be in the minority here but give me PR all day

I think the first half of SV is better on paper. For me personally, the alt arts of this era don’t have a special feeling and this generation lacking that giant chase kinda saps the fun out for ME personally. But I think it’ll be incredibly hard for scarlet violet to top the chilling reign to crown zenith run SWSH had

Strong disagree. So many forgotten Pokémon are getting illustration rares. That’s an amazing thing. I sick and tired of getting the same popular Pokémon be the only ones to get alt arts.

@@memestar1118 I just don’t find them interesting. Haven’t been wowed by any art in SV in around 3 sets now. An over saturation of art rares doesn’t make them more desirable to me, most of the cards are just boring

SW&SH sure as heck has set the bar high!!! I think the lack of big names/chases early on might be an indication that the beck end of S&V has something special in store for us!!! Fingers crossed at least LOL

I feel like we haven't seen a lot of big names in the first half so I got a sneaky suspicion that PCI has some monsters planned for the back half... I could be wrong but I'm hopeful!!

Thanks for this! I totally forgot about the first half of SWSH and this does bring me back to the reality of SV having room to swing in the second half. I think SV has amazing artwork but I don’t get why they are holding back on the Anchor cards except for Zard. I want to see a Mewtwo, Rayquaza set with those in terra alt form. Hopefully they can hide those ring pops though.

Great video! First half of S&V definitely blows the first half of S&S out of the water. But that back half of S&S is just so insane that I can’t see it getting beat. I feel like S&V will be similar to X&Y where the sets are more consistent throughout the entirety of the block instead of seeing massive improvements to sets in the later stages of a block like we saw in S&M or S&S.

I agree with your findings for every set. I think paradox beats vivid voltage just because of the variety and all the different chase cards. I know paradox was hit hard but I feel there is enough in the set to make you want to crack it open. I am really looking forward to the sets after twilight mascarade.

I think the biggest thing people focus on is that the end of SWSH was so strong, and the beginning of SV was so weak. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the arts from SV, but as overall sets they just feel lacking. The other issue with SV is the print quality. I LOVE 151, but I've pulled a ton of awesome cards (Ex 3 Blastoise SAR) And all of them had print lines so bad it wasn't even worth trying to grade them. Same thing with paldea evolved. Only thing I haven't seen as much on is paldean fates, but I have a limited sample size so far for that. Final point, I think it'll be interesting to see where SV sets settle as time goes on in total set value. Every set ever always starts high in value, then goes back down as new ones come out. Generally it's 5 or so cards that carry the bulk of the value. Even an incredible set like Hidden fates, the shiny charizard carries around 25% of the total set value. So right now on paper a lot of SV total value look good, but I wonder where they'll end up when all anyone cares about is the shiny mew, Charizard, ect. Great video. Appreciate it

Awesome point on seeing where in the long run these end up and who will carry the sets. You can look at Sun & Moon and see some pretty strong showings but even in SW&SH (at least for now) you see the bulk of the value at the top! SW&SH has also set the bar so crazy high it will be a real challenge for S&V to get up there but, like they say, records are made to be broken!!

also do reprints change the gem rate a lot or is the gem rate pretty consistent to the 1st batch?

So far we haven't seen reprints change the Gem Rate one way or the other. Not saying it can't happen just that thus far we haven't seen it!

For me every S&V set in this video beats its SwSh counterpart. I don’t think card value is entirely fair at this point since S&V is so new and I could see some cards really increasing over time. But the Illustration Rares alone make the early S&V sets better than the early SwSh sets. It will indeed be interesting to see what they can do with the back half. If they don’t bring a lot of popular top Pokemon into those sets as chase’s they will have a hard time beating SwSh. But Im guessing they have some big stuff in store for us. I’m hopeful :) I have actually started buying psa 10’s of some of these IR’s. It blows me mind how low pop some of them are. And having tried to get copies myself of many of them to grade I got frustrated at how poor of condition they all are and just started ponying up for the Psa 10’s.

Man I've been saying the same thing!! We haven't seen a lot of big names yet so I'm thinking that PCI has something wild up their sleeves for later in the era!! I also think you're really smart to start snagging up some of the low pop cards while they are undervalued. With the Gem rates being so low it seems like a really smart play. Only time will tell but at least for now they look solid!!

I agree that 1st half s&v decimates 1st half swsh. But there would have to be epic greatness in the back half of s&v to hold a candle. Idk if even mega evolutions or gold stars would be able to do it.

As someone who just got back into collecting because of 151, I dont really have ties to any era. I think the artwork for scarlett and violet is better by far for these first few sets.

It be nice to have another set like 151 or evolving skies anyother set is ok but not gems 151 best set to open evolving skies best singles for collectors due to how hard to pull and popularity of the cards in it

Poor card quality is a bad sign, means less people interested in poorly produced product. it’s sad how the SIR textures r so much btr in S&S era.

I'm not sure if the card quality will drive less interest, though it might drive a whole heck of a lot more frustration LOL. The quality in S&V is clearly lower then SW&SH comparables but more have been graded. I usually draw a correlation between grading volume and overall interest in a set/card but I guess time will tell! Interesting thought no matter what!!

@@PikaPikaPapa grading volume also a funciton of awareness of grading and ease to grade. The later isnt important but it soon will, ebay is partnering with PSA to have a "buy-to-grade" pipeline for cards bought on ebay. You will probably see an increase in grading at that point, but it does not mean an increase in interest. In the end, I am just disappointed with S&V card I have pulled and it makes me less likely to open product, but more likely to buy good quality cards for the oens I like. Also making me consider collecting Japanese as opposed to English.

SV sentiment will continue to be low until we get some evolving skies esque set, then people will realize how good the first half of the era is and only then will BB prices finally get to where they need to be, 130-140

I don’t believe the Scarlet & Violet era will ever surpass the Sword & Shield era once the current era is over. The reason is simple: alternate art equivalency. What makes S&S so great and unique? Alternate arts. We have Special Illustration Rares now. Sure. Not the same. In upcoming sets, we would have to get Secret Special Illustration Rares to even compare. Anyway, all that being said: so far, Scarlet & Violet is superior to Sword & Shield, when we compare them set by set. I doubt we will get an Evolving Skies equivalent this era. What MIGHT help out S&V era is if/when we get a specialty set for Generation 2 to akin to 151. Then, we will have the clear specialty-set era winner (S&V). Thank you, PPP! I'm a little more bullish on S&V not gonna lie!! We haven't seen a lot of the big names released yet and we typically see a new art variant towards the end of the era so maybe PCI has something grand up their sleeves LOL!! Either way you're right the bar is set insanely high with SW&SH so whatever they try to do to match it would have to be totally NEXT LEVEL and I dunno what that could possibly look like!!!

The gem rates are quite impressive, you do have a great point! BTW, I finally pulled the trigger and got the Rayquaza Vmax alt art (in a PSA 10) from Evolving Skies. I don’t have the Moonbreon but I’m happy to have the second chase from the most epic set of its generation! 😎🤟🏻

Ima speak facts here. Scarlet and violet kills sword and shield rn. You get so many hits in SV than SS. SV IRs destroy trainer gallery’s all day every day in art.
