RESOURCES:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends different amounts of screen time for children based on their age:
Under 18 months: No screen time, except for video chatting with family and friends
18-24 months: Can have some screen time with a parent or caregiver, but it should be high quality and educational
2-3: Can watch up to 1 hour a day of high-quality educational programming
2-5: Limit non-educational screen time to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on weekends
6 and older: Encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens
The AAP also recommends that parents and children negotiate limits and boundaries around screen usage with the Family Media Use Plan. Other ways to limit screen time include designating media-free times together and media-free zones, such as bedrooms.
