Is Serj Tankian losing his voice? He responds (2024) 

Actually from what he explains, he does the correct way, he lacks control of it, however

@@Ghostifis depends if you mean raspy inhales or deepfry inhales that Serj used to do in the past, as I mentioned. because the deepfry inhales are definitely harder than a regular exhale fry growl - you gotta put this technique into a sort of reversed vocal, but doing a dry inhale is easier because you don't need to do a lot of frying or actual growling, just do the right shape of mouth and put the air through your vocal folds in the right frequency. but it all depends on the techniques you already know - Serj's always had that deep growl in him, and my voice was always a high baritone with a somewhat childish quality to it, like when Daron hit puberty lol, so it's different for me than it might be for you or anyone else.

This, FFS. Going back and watching BDO 2002 for example, other than the inhaling technique he does here, none of those rough vocals are healthy. He probably did a lot of damage. I think he's overblowing the emotional side of his screaming and is in denial about the damage. That's my guess

​@@jametowne yeah. Dont know how much he is in denial about the damage. I mean i loved the raw screaming that he did up until 2002, 2003 was great too but he started doing less from there on. Its obviously unhealthy the way he did it, and in rare cases nowadays still does it. But from many performances I watched, Serj still has his normal voice in him. Age made his voice go deeper very slightly which is why his higher voice in notes around A4 doesnt sound as manly anymore PLUS he is adding his nasal singing which makes that tone even worse. My point is there were rare cases and times where Serj just removes his nasal singing, and you can hear his Toxicity "tone" is still with him, so I dont think that his unhealthy screaming from back then did any long lasting damage to today. We dont know if it had any lasting damage or not because Serj just never goes deeper into the whole topic, but from what I hear if he just learns and trains to sing normally without the nasal bs, and also gets screaming lessons we can get the absolute best sound of his Singing ever. But for some reason Serj "decided" to just start singing nasally, again we never found out specifically why, or if it was because of his screaming or because he thinks it sounds funny or because he cant do it without anymore or whatever and he just doesnt get screaming lessons. Or who knows if anyone has ever told Serj that those exist... it seems like no one is getting real with him on this matter

But now that I think of it, it makes sense. He's mentioned in some interviews that he didn't wanna do mezmerize and hypnotize. Which was already by the point he "damaged" his voice. He also mentioned not being interested in metal anymore. (He never really fully was tho) but by that point his interest was mostly lost I think. Then they went on a hiatus and Serj started his solo project. Now if you listen to his own work you'll notice he uses the same voice as he uses today, the nasal style. I think it's mostly him just not really being interested in SOAD anymore and that's probably why he never went for vocal lessons cause the style he uses for his own work is "easier" for him and doesn't damage his vocals. He still has it in him. Not even talking about the screaming but also the softer voice. In some shows you can see and hear when he's into it and when not.

If you sing with improper technique (straining, singing WAY out of your range) for too long it'll start to show and will cause irreversible damage eventually. Most male singers can get away with improper singing technique until they're in their late 30's to mid 40's. Serj was already in or headed into his 30's when self-titled album was recorded and was 38 by the time Mesmerize/Hypnotize were recorded. That's like 8+ (not forgetting their time as "Soil") solid years straight of singing through studio albums and live shows with nothing but strain. Based on Serj's speaking voice, he's either a baritone or a very low tenor so he was working his ass off EXTRA to hit those notes with such power. Many other singers suffered the same fate because they were never taught to sing with proper technique (Tom Delonge, Paul McCartney, James Hetfield just to name a few). There are tricks and ways to simulate the same singing styles without having to strain but it takes a lot of dedication and practice to get it exactly right. Some might argue that you don't get the same effect, but I think for the singers it's worth not losing the ability to do something that they love to do. Plus, there's always AI.

Nah he didn't lose it. Obviously his voice changed as he got older but he changed his singing style that's about it. When he lets a scream come out it still sounds like the 90s/00s Serj. His clean vocals on the other hand is what bothers me the most. He went for a nasal vocal style which doesn't fit the old SOAD songs.

He really didn't lose his voice. If he started like how he sings now in his early career, people would argue about how his singing became more distorted and screaming, unlike clean and high singing. The change in his vocal styles is simply a change from M1 (chest voice) vocal register to M2 (falsetto/head/mixed voice) vocal register. A lot of famous vocalists sing in M2, like Chris Chornel, Chester Bennington, Axel Rose, etc. And some vocalists have different and interchangeable vocal styles, like Serj himself, who can sing in both M1 and M2 (like how he said when he became angry can put more energy and sing those high notes with push, which is the chest voice).

@@MarcosVinicius-xh8ihone of the only reasons why he sounds like this now is that he's just protecting his voice, he's proved countless times live he can still "sing like he used to".

I woul really prefer mostly their clean duo vacals. It's resonating so perfectly.

Daron and Serj have extremely different ranges and daron's screaming technique is 10x more unhealthy than serj's he just doesn't scream that much in soad songs and pretty much never in sob

@majdrandoms5807 there are techniques for not dry screaming but I don't really care about the screaming , it really makes me sad though the way serj sings the clean lyrics, it's a sound of his nose not from his chest, Daron is as good as he used to be

@@Rafaela_Adamsyeah Daron’s voice has grown on me actually when they play live, especially when Serj sounds so nasally it kinda made me appreciate Darons vocals
