For what to further politicize our existence? But in a different way? Being trans or doing something while being trans isn’t inherently political. Our identity and existence isn’t “political” because we are living a life of protest or making a statement. Our existence is political in some peoples eyes because they have seen gender rolls enforced with violence and a plethora of other means to protect the status quo. They have a hard time accepting us as is people. I personally don’t want to be politicized, be talked about as a spectacle, I want to be seen and treated like any other person. It’s alienating when I walk into a room and there are people who think my identity is a political statement or me reaffirming or disavowing their political ideology. I’ll say it again we are people doing things people do. We have been for a long time. In a lot of cases we have been written out of history but we aren’t some new fangled idea or novelty.

I totally agree that the most brilliant part of the album is how goddamn funny it is. Like it’s the horniest music ever, but if you get the joke you can’t help but laugh. And it’s not Kim Petras, the tool of someone else, who we laugh at (as was the case for a lot of old raunchy comedies), but Kim Petras the genius commanding the flow who allows us to laugh at the absurdity. Especially as music in discourse with a post covid almost desperately horny club scene. It so effortlessly fits into the moment

Great review! Slut pop is surprisingly good and I think upon further listens people will start to notice that. The first listen did take me back, it's quite different to Kims previous work. All the songs being around the 2 minute mark really help, the songs are highly repetitive, addictive and I hope they won't tire quickly because of this. I'm hopeful for her first proper main label album... She better crack on with it. We need consistent live performances which happen alongside single and music video releases (the same day and month would be nice!), I feel like she's been a little all over the place. I really hope Kim finds her footing and gets a little more recognition for the good reasons, she deserves it.

I will admit that my distaste for the record is entirely personal. I just find it really difficult listening to a record that is so raunchy and explicit and knowing that one of the main people behind it is on trial for sexual assault. I feel like Petras is caught in the crossfire a bit, but I will say that the lyrics are not my favorite (this is coming from someone who listens to Ayesha Erotica, which is also problematic and more raunchy). I have heard better songs by Petras, the ones on this EP are just a bit too tongue and cheek, kind of soullessly crass to my ears. I will say she has made songs in the past that I like ('Death By Sex' for example) that are equally as ditzy and vapid, but I did not really enjoy this crop of songs. I guess I may be in the minority but since I grew up off of Dr. Luke's pop hits in the 2000s I found the production to be very irritating and bland. Just reminded me of sounds and style done a decade ago. I don't know. Also, on the based topic, 'based' is technically apolitical and is just slang for something that is 'cool' with the youths, but it has kind of been coopted to be with the whole 'redpill' movement. It actually came from the rapper Lil B, aka BasedGod, who is a popular underground rapper and is super influential in the underground. Take with that information what you will. Great video as usual!

Hi Alex! I love Ayesha Erotica and I've been liking Slut Pop. I had the same thought at first, that it was recycled Ayesha, and ultimately I think Kim has such a sleek pop take on everything that the product lands very differently than an Ayesha track. I just wish Ayesha was still making music :( I've been having fun looking at all the artists in this lane. Throatzilla by Slayyyter, Good Puss by COBRAH, Like Me by Chase Icon, BDE by Shygril, and Throat Goat by Kim all do something different imo. My point is I think we need all the dolls dolling. I appreciated your thoughts! I can totally see how this project could feel bland and irritating.

Pretty much agree with everything you said. But also I feel she's lost a bit of direction musically, last few single releases kinda gave off the impression she was just throwing stuff out there and seeing what sticks (although pretty sure she has little say in all that). Sadly none of them have given the chart success she/her management probably hoped for, and it's just perplexed some of her core fanbase.

@@acornsoundsquirrel I think Throat Goat hits at a really good spot in the album, you've got this tense, sexual buildup of tracks and at almost exactly at the halfway point there's the massive humorous release that cuts the tension down so it can be built back up.

I think it’s kinda bizarre that you think this album is supposed to turn someone on.. To her specifically. Maybe that’s just because I’m a gay man and therefore not really turned on by women but I think the intention of the album is more about sexual liberation. And the listener, no matter what gender or sexual orientation is supposed to identify with it, rather than be like “Okay, this is Kim singing to me!” It’s more like it’s “Kim wants me to sing with her, get into it, liberate my own sexuality, put away the shame of talking about this.” So yeah the album got me thinking about sex yes. But not with Kim, rather with my boyfriend and in general it’s more about being more confident in my sexuality and open in expressing my desires to my partner. And the other intention of the album is to just dance, haha.

@@ravequeenellisd2680 That doesn't mean she isn't creating sexually liberating content. You don't need to be dominant to be liberative; some of us are submissive, some of us use this language in the bedroom, we enjoy it and it makes us feel good, this is what she's doing with it.

It’s not about that it’s about dr Luke controlling this young trans woman and shelfing her albums, forcing her to make sluttier songs, it’s not right and I won’t be surprised if she had to sign a bunch of ndas she’s locked in that contract along with doja cat. It’s so sad how these girls get taken advantage. But I do love Kim and definitely listen to problematique it’s what she was suppose to release instead of this horrible ep

Before your review I had no idea of what the message of Slut Pop was. I saw it as Kim trying too hard while also barely trying at all. I think what she was going for could have been interesting, but unfortunately the songs sound like her and Dr. Luke wrote the whole thing in an afternoon. Plenty of her contemporaries, like Cupcakke, Brooke Candy, Ayesha Erotica, etc. have made music just as raunchy as Slut Pop, but those have a little more artistic credibility behind them. To me Slutpop feels unnecessary and a downgrade from her previously released music. “Future Starts Now” and even “Coconuts” were far stronger than anything on Slut Pop.

Cupcakke literally started as an internet meme. She’s since established herself as a more serious artist but let’s be honest here songs like Vagina or Deepthroat weren’t meant to be taken seriously.

I love this album, it’s fun to dance to and fun to sing the lyrics out loud while driving with the car windows down lol 😆 I don’t take these songs “serious” because they are tongue-in-cheek, but Kim being a sexy trans woman it’s great to hear her embrace her sexuality in a hyper sexual light hearted way. I don’t think she made this record to be poetic, I think it’s a record made to feel sexy and cute. The last track, your wish is my command, I think is the most pretty lyrically. Been a pretty big fan of Kim Petras’ work but I personally don’t find this album even not bad. It’s just blank, lyrically not there and I guess it wasn’t the purpose of the project to embody a strong storytelling but there’s still a need for the listener to linger onto something. Some beats are good tho, good to dance but it has already been seen and done before, by others, and by her, I even wonder if she (or the producer) didn’t use the same instrument - synth - of Turn off the light on some songs. No, that was not that for me, listenable songs but pointless lyrics, to being cringe sometimes, involving other artists sometimes for no reason, and that absolutely don’t put images and stylistic device at the forefront. She said she doesn’t want to push boundaries back and just wanna make traditional bouncy pop but there’s a limit. Waiting for her album tho!!! Nice review :)

I need an analysis of her albums Feed The Beast and Problematique. Her record was a mess and she was so devastated when she wasn't allowed to release it and encouraged fans to listen to the leaked songs, then Feed The Beast appeared (as an allegory of feeding the industry) and then months later Problematique was released anyway.

I gotta say I really wanted to like this EP because I loved Coconuts, and I assumed that it would be similar due to the subject matter. I just really didn't like the production a lot-it felt like they just used stock club beats for the most part-and it could get pretty repetitive at times, despite how short the project is. I just hope that if Kim puts out more explicitly sexual songs, they have the same fun energy as Coconuts, or are at least nice to listen to. oh yeah also screw Dr. Luke I don't fw that guy even if there is still no concrete conclusion to his actions

The morning news show had to use Kim Petras' birth name because it's a fact gathered during research. It's not insensitive to mention a transgender person's birth name when telling the story of their transition, and it's not something that "dies" when they transition. Kim Petras says she always knew her gender, caring about "dead naming" implies that a person did not always know their gender. Identifying as transgender is not a handicap, the transition details are not transphobic. However, identifying as trans becomes a barrier to identifying as a woman. Eventually, there will be terminology distinguishing those who transition for self-expression from those who transition due to self-doubt or misdiagnosis. It would be divisive for transgender people to identify with the cause of transition. However, it should be noted that the only person who could be emotionally harmed by "dead naming" is someone whose transition was motivated by doubt of the gender they always knew, which Kim Petras does not express. Only the person being "dead named" can identify if they are harmed by it, as only they know if they always knew their gender. Claiming that they are harmed by their birth name implies that they did not always know their gender, which is not true for everyone who identifies as transgender. Those who transition for affirmation of their self-expression are proud of their birth name and respect it as a part of themselves as they are and have always been. Kim Petras appears to be one of those.

Maybe I'm completely wrong ...usually non binary and trans people are treated as a fetish, and especially man uses that kind of stuff that she sings about in the record as insults ... so (always in my mind) she thought " u know what , I'm gonna use it to show that I'm empowered about my sexuality and I take the lead of it" ...again this is just my key of reading... to me, it's more about a person trying to have control about something that usually is used to denigrate somebody else.

I’ve never considered Kim Petras’ music political nor through the lens of a trans woman. Her music is great music and not music just to make a political statement which is what found her success. In regards to this album, I think the beats are amazing, but the lyrics are off-putting due to their vulgarity. I see this the same as when rappers get overly vulgar or cis women like cardi b on WAP. The vulgarity has gone well beyond Kesha and LMFAO, I could never see this getting radio play or mainstream integration like they had. This album to me seems like a caricature, being as outrageous as possible, but it becomes unsavory in the process. If the language was dialed back to LMFAO and Kesha levels, this album could top the charts easily. Right now this album is sickeningly gross thanks to the lyrics, the gargling in particular makes my stomach churn. While these ridiculous abhorrent lyrics are integrated into a catchy way that fits, I hope she goes back to her old style, as that music I much preferred. She’s a talented singer, don’t waste it on stuff like this. I’d love to enjoy the beats on the album without lyrics in some way, as I feel they were golden chart topping work thrown in the bin with this subject matter

I don’t think you make an album specifically for the radio called “SLUTPOP” with tracks like “Treat me like a slut” “XXX”, or “They wanna F***”. With lyrics such as “Ooh yeah, daddy you got permission Ooh yeah, put me into position Ooh yeah, come on teach me a lesson Ooh yeah, I can be your possession”. Just an observation. People have a visceral reaction to this sort of stuff and that’s part of the appeal and marketing.

Very interesting your analysis, professor. I looove Kim, she's so talented and "Slut pop" is such fun and catchy! Iconiiic! But... no one is "assigned" as male or female at birth, one IS born. Also, there's not such thing as "death name" and no one being trans, or any , should be "offended" by that kind of thing... Then, we are only female, or male, even being trans; personalities and stereotipes (what now wokes call "gender") aren't identities, they don't make you "non-binary" or whatever, you're still a man or a woman.

Putting aside your thoughts on gender identity, it is true people are assigned a sex at birth, doctors base it on genitals of the child but that isn't foolproof, intersex people exist whose chromosomes and hormones don't actually match to that assigned sex of male or female, and in rare cases can even have characteristics of both - it's not quite so black and white as always man or woman!
@ZoeBrain
@ZoeBrain 2 года назад
Please look up "intersex" on Wikipedia . Or in any basic biology text. For extra credit, look up 5ARD or 17BHSD, the two most common syndromes that cause an apparent sex change after birth from F to M. Things are nowhere near as simple as you were taught. 1 in 300 men don't have the usual 46,XY most men do. Some women do though, and rarely, so do the daughters they give birth to.
@ZoeBrain
@ZoeBrain 2 года назад
A short history of Sex Chromosomes In 1890, the X and Y chromosomes were discovered. It was found that the men who were tested had 48 chromosomes, including an X and a Y, while women who were tested also had 48 chromosomes, including 2 X chromosomes. So obviously the conclusion was that the Y chromosome defined masculinity. A reasonable conclusion. Fast forward 50 years... and it was found that some men had 47 chromosomes, including 2 X's and a Y, while some women had 45, including only one X. Everyone else had 46, rather than 48. Still no problem with the "Y chromosome defines masculinity" idea. Then... it was found that fully 1 in 300 men weren't 46,XY. Some women were. Oops. After DNA was discovered in the 50s, it was found that the SrY gene, usually found on the Y chromosome, sometimes was missing. And sometimes had been translocated to another chromosome, hence 46,XX men and 46,XY women. So SrY defined masculinity. Whew! Then.. it was found out that some men didn’t have an SrY chromosome, not anywhere. Some women did. Other genes were involved sometimes. Oops again. . Worse, other factors, such as Androgen Insensitivity made 46,XY people female, and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia masculinised 46,XX people. Then in the 70s, other syndromes, such as 5alpha-reductase-2 deficiency were identified, which caused babies to look like one sex at birth, then the other at ppuberty. Even worse, in some places 1 in 50 infants had this natural sex change, it was not rare there. Science 1974 Dec 27; 186 (4170): 1213-5 In an isolated village of the southwestern Dominican Republic, 2% of the live births were in the 1970's, guevedoces....These children appeared to be girls at birth, but at puberty these 'girls' sprout muscles, testes, and a penis. For the rest of their lives they are men in nearly all respects. In the 90s, it was found that hormonal hiccups in the womb caused some parts of the body to develop as one sex, others as the other, regardless of genetics. Male-to-female transsexuals have female neuron numbers in a limbic nucleus. Kruiver et al J Clin Endocrinol Metab (2000) 85:2034-2041 The present findings of somatostatin neuronal sex differences in the BSTc and its sex reversal in the transsexual brain clearly support the paradigm that in transsexuals sexual differentiation of the brain and genitals may go into opposite directions It's a matter of timing during foetal development. Sometimes a boy is born looking like a girl, sometimes a girl is born looking like a boy, regardless of chromosomes. This is complex stuff. We don't teach the Theory of General Relativity in grade school, Newtonian physics, or at most Special Relativity (far simpler than General) is enough. Similarly, "XX is female, XY is male" is good enough unless you do medicine or biology in college. It's only really relevant when talking about Trans or Intersex people, just as Relativistic effects only become relevant in the domain of the very big, very small, or very very fast, close to 186,000 miles a second. People do *not* need psychiatric help when they think that things get heavier, more massive, as they go faster... while lengths contract. People do *not* need help when they think their sex is something different from their genetics. Intersex people exist. Trans people exist. They are unusual, so trying to apply the usual approximations is as silly as trying to apply Newtonian physics to things moving close to or at light speed. Legislating such things is as insane as legally ruling that Pi=3... as has been done in the past. Z.E.Brain Sex and Gender Education Australia 2021.
