I struggle with giving up smoking ,its horrible addiction and harmful. I dont believe its a salvation issue but do believe we will suffer consequences. I want to quit for my Lord,my flesh wont let go . Its really no different than gluttony,sexual, drinking,over spending.

First John 1:8. If we say we have no sin, we are deceived, and the truth is not in us. We are all sinners and deserve to go to hell. Romans 3:23. One lie would send us to hell forever. But, Jesus paid the debt of sin we owe God, and set us free. John 3:18. Believers are no longer condemned to hell, but guaranteed heaven. The gospel we believe. First Corinthians 15:1-4. That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that HE was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. Romans 1:16. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to everyone that BELIEVETH, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Galatians 1:6-9. Any one who preaches any other gospel is accursed of God. Romans 11:6. Salvation is all grace apart from works. Romans 4:5. but to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him who justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for His perfect righteousness. Blessed s the man to whom the Lord imputeth righteousness apart from works. Blessed is the man whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Colossians 2:13. He has forgiven us all trespasses. Past, present, and future sins we have not even thought of yet. Paid in full. John 3:18. A one time faith alone in Jesus finished work on the cross alone apart from any works. Romans 6;23. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Once you accept the free gift, you have eternal life. John 6:47. God cannot lie. John 6:40. John 6:29. First John 5:13.

Though I don’t necessarily agree with your assertion that Paul is speaking about the church, the only argument I have ever heard for smoking being a sin is that as the temple of God we should not defile our bodies. This sounds like a valid argument until you really think about it. If that is the standard that we must use, then we have just eliminated almost all processed foods, perfumes, make-up, deodorant, and soaps along with unnumbered and untold other things we use every day. If the sin is us defiling our bodies by the introduction of substances that could possibly or even definitely harm us then how we introduced those substances cannot be the deciding factor. Whether we are breathing them, drinking them, eating them, absorbing them through our skin… we are still doing the same thing which must also be considered sin and just as egregious.

Well said! I have never smoked anything in all of my life. I do hope we christians can really show compassion, grace, kindness to those who struggle with smoking. It does seem like there is always this human tendency to elevate some seen sins above others. Like hey, well if a christian is sexually immoral then oh boy, he is one extra wicked one but if another christian "only is seen" to be gluttonous well he is all good, he is not as bad as the other one. When the fact is we ALL have the sinful nature. No one is better than anyone else in morality. Yes, we should not delibarately live in sin but just being encouraging for our brethren in Christ to strengthen their walk with the Lord, be compassionate and just help them, not to condemn, as Jesus has forgiven and shown grace to us May God bless you all:)

Samson is a true man of God who led Israel for 20 years - Judges 16:31. Samson was also a fornicator -Judges 16:1, but Samson is listed in the Godly hall of faith in Hebrews 11:32. Samson would not be listed there if he was unsaved. King David is a true man of God and also an adulterer and murderer. All these Biblical examples refute false doctrines claim that Christians who are in sin must be "unsaved" or "will lose their salvation."

David repented of his sins just as we all must to have them forgiven. Psalms 51:1-17 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. This is true brokenness and Godly sorrow repentance that saves a soul.

That's not what the word of God says. 1 Corinthians 6 9-11 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Galatians 5:16-21 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: SO THAT YE CANNOT DO THE THINGS THAT YE WOULD. 18But (IF) ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [ Meaning drug use and casting spells] 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: 👉of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 👈22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Idolatry is placing anything above the Lord Jesus Christ.

The short and simple answer I think, if it causes you or others to stumble in their faith it is better to cut it out if you can. That said, even if smoking were a sin, we are all sinners. No one has turned from all their sins and Jesus died for all of them. A believer who is a smoker is just as much in Christ as you are. If one cares that much, it is far better for you to help your brother or sister in Christ with their struggle to quit than condemn them for it.

I had a beautiful apartment, a dream apartment, the persons below were chain smokers, they were ruining my health because my apartment was filled with smoke, and finally I had to live in the garage until I find another apartment. They were offended when I politely explained the issue to them. The husband even used chemical paint on purpose in the adjacent garage to make me uncomfortable, so I had to keep my garage door half open to avoid intoxication. It was one of the worst period of my life. It's a sin when you're destroying other people's health even if you don't care about yours. I'm not condemning smokers when they're not affecting others. I hope they had Jesus covering their sins too. It's the past for me now, it's been five years ago, but it was wicked of them.

I think the proper thing to do was that you should have checked the apartments rules about smoking and made a wiser choice about where you chose to live. You aren't any more entitled than they are. You can't remove someone else's right in order to keep your right. It's your responsibility to do what you need to do without infringing on another person's right. That's biblical. NOBODY likes it when you demand your right be given to you when it means they have to give up their own right. And, that should be understandable.
@gethsemane-777
@gethsemane-777 7 месяцев назад
@@graftme3168 As I explained, their sins are all forgiven if they trust the Good News. It doesn't mean their lifestyle isn't damaging others, even if insidious. It's not a question of entitlement. If I persist in depositing decomposing or toxic waste on my property, resulting in illnesses or cancer among neighboring households, even if there's a legal loophole in the city's regulations (things like this happened), people would be entirely justified in taking measures to protect their safety. My health was deteriorating greatly when I lived in that apartment. Smoking is definitely a sin, like so many behaviors not even mentioned in the Bible due to a different time period. It doesn't mean I'm not going to deprive them of the Good News if I can share it with them. If they think they are perfectly righteous, and doesn't need to be saved, then I can easily pinpoint their harmful behavior that go through the walls even if it seems invisible. We all need to be saved because of our sins, and smoking cigarette or whatever is one of those things that ruin our society.

Seems the Pharisees were inclined to "strain at the gnat , and swallow the Camel" , much like those given to condemning others for their peccadilloes . Logically , one could certainly apply a Romans 14/1 Corinthians 6:12 understanding to any temporal matter : "“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything." Only unbelief in Him for His doubtless Guarantee (John 3:16) condemns forever (John 3:18) . Whether what we do edifies or "builds up" goes to eternal rewards in a Discipleship Sanctification process . Not a justification before God issue .

Those liars who say you don't have Holy Spirit because you smoke are some perfectionistic, legalistic oharisees. When I was saved around 15 I did not get rid of my 2 addictions right away. The first one I got away around year 18. God works in us as He does and some struggles in the flesh are greater than others. Of course we all should honor our bodies because we are God's own, respect Him, but God also sees our hearts. There is a difference in a christian who WILLINGLY wants to destroy himself and then a christian who does not wanna smoke but still dies. Now, to this I must say I have never smoked one tobacco or a cigar in my life due to my asthma mainly, ans I see my asthma in that sense a blessing of God although it is a health issue, but we all have our struggles so I really, really wanna be gracious to unbelievers, and especially brethren in Christ. That would depend on how it effects the person that smokes, it's his body not someone else's, it's his right to smoke or not smoke, we have smoking laws that pertain to smokers, most of them obey these laws, this idea or belief it's a sin because it's hurting your body is ridiculous to say the lest, there's an element of danger in everything we do, they say it can kill you then go get in their car and have a wreck and die, it was a ACCIDENT, ACCIDENTS happen, not a single person out there that smokes does so to get cancer IF they get it, no one drives a car to get themselves killed but it happens, knowledge can save you, food its self is killing you, as a matter of fact, the air we breath is killing us, it just takes a long time to do it, non smokers don't like the smell but they don't care if their perfume stinks to a smoker, listen, if it's not hurting you or someone else and if your not a hypocrite when saying your smoke is hurting me and then go out and drive a car after polluting the air we ALL breath then no your not sinning, now if your beginning to feel the effects after smoking for a LONG time, your breathing is short, your tiring easy, it's time to go to the doctor to check your lungs, depending on how much you love your body will tell you if you need to quit or just suffer, if you choose to suffer then don't complain, you should love your body and take care of it, if you got diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the doctor tells you what to do and prescribes you meds, don't just take the meds and not follow his advise, quit eating and exercise AFTER you eat, don't lay down or sit, food is meant for energy, if you don't use up the energy your putting in your body, it turns to fat in a attempt to store it for later use, taking in more calories than you need is like putting more gas in your car than you need, where's it going to go?, smoking is not a sin unless your love for your body is too great, something is going to take you out but you don't have to go out gasping for air, that's before the dying experience, most gasp for air at the time they die, it's a natural response of the brain and body, smoking has nothing to do with that, how long it takes for something to take you out, depending on what that something is, is where I would apply more caution when doing it, being addicted to something is also not how to determine if something is sin or not, cola's, coffee, ice cream, sugar, there all addictive, where do you draw the line? when it's hurting you, not before it's hurting you, not everyone that smokes get's cancer and not everyone that don't smoke NOT get cancer, the bible forbids us nothing or no thing, if we all gave up the things we love based on those that don't love our things, we would all have nothing, you can rest assure there's someone out there that will judge you for what you allow, their usually hypocrites though, they just don't see their problem or faults

@@sarahkirbach5040 It would not be adultery unless the prostitute was married. When a woman is married to a man she is considered to be own by him. Therefor if she goes and sleeps with another man she is giving what belongs to her husband to someone else. In the same way if a man sleeps with another mans wife he is stealing from that man. Adultery is really a form of theft and that's the point of it being a sin. For any sexual act to be considered adultery the woman involved must be married. If the man was married and the woman was not then it actually wouldn't be considered adultery by the Bible's standards because men don't belong to their wife the same way wives belong to their husbands.

@timgrady4630 Год назад
Wilkin states : The great questions keep on coming. In my mail bag (inbox) today, I had this gem: 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 states, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple” (NIV). My wife has a relative who has said he thinks about suicide. Would you please explain to her how the verses quoted apply to one who takes his own life (“destroys God’s temple”)? The key to understanding any passage is the context. Verses 16-17 are part of a unit that begins at verse 5 and ends at verse 17. In my Bible the heading for that unit is entitled, “Watering, Working, Warning.” The warning is obviously verses 16-17. The watering refers to verses 5 through 8. The verses in between, verses 9 through 15, refer to working. Paul uses him and Apollos as examples of wise master builders. Clearly verses 9 to 15 look at the Judgment Seat of Christ, the Bema. At the Bema all of our works will be judged. In this passage Paul is thinking specifically of our works in relation to the local church. Any works we will do in and for the church which have eternal value will be rewarded at the Bema. Any works which lack eternal value (wood, hay, straw) will not be rewarded. I do not think the issue here is good works versus bad works. The issue is works that last the test of fire, works with eternal value, and works which are burned up. So going on a ski trip for the youth of your church probably has some enduring value, but a lot of it is just vacation. If your church puts in a bowling alley, don’t expect to get a lot of rewards at the Bema for donating for that or for bowling there either. Verses 16-17 now get to the issue of works that hurt the local church. Paul says, “Do you not know that you [plural] are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you [plural]?” In this context the temple of God is what is being built in verses 9 to 15. Paul then says, “If anyone defiles the temple of God [God’s building, built by wise master builders], God will destroy him.” The word for temple (naos) is used three times in verses 16-17 and three other times in 1 Corinthians (6:19; 8:10; 9:13). The latter two of those uses refer to pagan temples and to the Jewish temple. However, in 1 Cor 6:19 Paul says, “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?” But to read that into 1 Cor 3:16-17 is a mistake because the contexts are completely different. While commentators often are wrong about interpreting texts, it is noteworthy that nearly all commentaries on 1 Corinthians understand “the temple of God” in 1 Cor 3:16-17 as referring to the local church (or the Church). So, these verses say nothing about smoking, drug abuse, overeating, riding motorcycles, playing Russian roulette, or suicide. Paul is not talking here about things we do that destroy our bodies. He is talking about things we do which can damage and destroy the local church (causing divisions, trying to run off the leaders, trying to split the church, spreading lies, etc.). The point is this: If we destroy the local church, God will then destroy us. That means that He will bring temporal judgment on us, possibly leading to premature death. But it says nothing about eternal condemnation. Paul is writing to believers and believers cannot be eternally condemned. While this text has nothing to do with suicide, since you raise the issue I will respond to that point as well. Once. We. Are. Saved. We. Are. Always. Saved. “He who lives and believes in Me shall never die” (John 11:26). “He who comes to Me shall never hunger; he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24). If suicide could undo the new birth, then so could any sin (murder, adultery, drunkenness, apostasy, etc.). But there is no sin, suicide included, which can undo the new birth. When I was growing up my parents told me not to cross my eyes because they could get stuck like that. That isn’t true. But it kept me from doing that. Many preachers think if they threaten people with hell for suicide that will keep people from taking their lives. Well, whether that keeps people from committing suicide or not, that is not true. What such teaching does, however, is contradict the good news of Jesus Christ. Such teaching makes it more likely that the person who hears that will never come to faith in Christ for everlasting life. Ironically one is more likely to be eternally condemned by hearing such teaching than by not hearing it. If I think that my eternal destiny hinges on me not committing some big sin, then I do not believe in the free gift of eternal life by faith in Christ, apart from works. If you want people to avoid eternal condemnation, proclaim the message of everlasting life to them (John 3:16). Suicide is terrible. It not only takes a life, it hurts the immediate family, the extended family, friends, coworkers, and so many others. Suicide is not a victimless crime. But no sin can undo the promise of everlasting life to the believer. One closing note. Suicides are often committed by people who are not in their right minds. They may have mental illness or may be high on drugs at the time. In some cases they might not even be culpable for that action because they were literally insane at the time. We are not God. The Lord Jesus will judge every believer at the Judgment Seat of Christ (the Bema). If you have a believing loved one who took his own life, rejoice that he or she is with the Lord now. And realize that there will be much grace and much understanding at the Bema. We all will need a lot of grace and understanding at the Bema, don’t you think?"

I don't think it's a very good argument to take the stance "well everything else is a sin so is it really that bad?" Rather we should address if things like sugar, caffeine, being sedentary, etc. are sins and rid ourselves of all sin. We are called to perfection afterall. Bible is clear that exercise is not our goal in life so a human does not need to exercise and the bible is our final authorities, not doctors who opinions are largely influenced by big pharma and changes like the wind. Imo, sugar and caffeine are not "drugs" but rather byproducts of various foods and we are not forbidden from any foods. Consuming either in excess like anything would be gluttony and sinful. "Drugs" are things in which you take that you can no longer call yourself "sober" like we are called to be biblically. Just because someone else says "x is bad", does not mean that it is bad. It's probably a waste of money more than anything that could be better spent elsewhere. I don't see smoking as the devil that people make it out to be. This is coming from someone who does not smoke and never has.
