Koreans don't touch other people's stuff not because there are surveillance cameras everywhere, but because they expect other people to not touch their stuff as well. It's a social norm, not by force.
Which do you prefer? A safe, sanitized country like Korea or more chaotic, wild underdeveloped country? I feel like it depends on your personality type
I left my wallet the other at the gym for almost an entire day, when I remembered and came back to get it, it was still there at the same exact spot, I love Korea😌
That's it. It happened recently. It's very rare so became a huge issues seeing that in dailys news on TV. Foreigners didn't even realize that it could be such a big issue in Korea.
What is even more remarkable in Korea is that even when a package is left at the door, people do not take it. This is a societal agreement among the citizens. If I were to take it, both the delivery person and the person waiting for the package would be inconvenienced. As you who also hopes for the safe arrival of your own packages, this promise must be upheld because it has become a common practice among the public. Therefore, the delivery person leaves the package at the door without needing a signature from the recipient and departs.
Nobody touches your belongings, even if you drop your 50,000원 on the street. We pick it up to you. I did actually on street in Hongdae. Don't worry about your money 😉
Yes, in Korea, if you leave your phone, wallet, or laptop on the table and go somewhere else for a few minutes, no one will steal them. But don't leave your bike on the street 😂
It's a lie... There was a time when stealing bicycles was a trend in the 80s and 90s So now I'm joking around like a meme, but there's no one to steal a bike... and there's a free bike rental system on the street... and that's not accurate information
first i am say.. Welcome to Korea~ Let me tell you exactly about this video. It's not because Koreans have many CCTVs. It's a national character that doesn't touch other people's things. Mostly Koreans is.. When saw the empty seat, they think it was to go to the toilet, or to smoke outside..
If there's something on the table and there's no one.. Koreans think like this. "The table thief appeared. He left his things on the table and disappeared!" Koreans are angry!!
Is it because Koreans are notably moral people? In my opinion, that doesn't seem to be the case. Koreans have a similar moral level to foreigners. However, Korea has been in a 70-year standoff with North Korea. As a result, the police and military forces are at a high level. If you commit a crime in Korea, you are almost always arrested. Koreans are well aware of this, making it difficult to commit crimes.
As a Korean, I say. Korean don't want touch others stuff, and also want that others don't touch my stuff. This is social rule in Korea. If you come to Korea, You must follow this rule. If you don't, police must arrest you and You are showed in Daily News and you will be taken so many blames from Koreans.
If you steal it you get caught 100% in Korea and you are a criminal ruin your life for good no one wants to do that here unless you want to be a professional thief which is a very bad career choice considering all those cctvs around you. But still some desperate people would find your unguarded belongings juicy opportunity to make some bucks to survive few more days so don't ever do it in Korea as well
I hear that Korea is getting less safe because of American influence on Korea's culture. The young generation are committing more sexual crimes and so on that didn't happen 20 years ago. Korea is becoming more Americanized and I think it will become more unsafe.
@@1ifechanger737 1.
Not sure about that. No country has more CCTVs than SK. It is even obligatory to install black box in your car in korea which basically works as another spy camera helping prevent crimes or track them down. In this situation, no wonder SK has such a low crime rate. Keep in mind that SK once had as high crime rate as others until like early 1990s when the cameras weren't widely introduced. Back then, it wasn't unusual to see young girls getting kidnapped right in the middle of the street in SK by a group of thugs pretending that it was some sort of acting. Remember. Koreans are not exceptional in terms of human beings evil by nature.
I saw news that some group of foreigners from Russia and China got arrested for stealing in Korea. It seems like they just visited Korea for purpose of stealing. But in general, the cases are very rare. I just want people to pay attention if there are some people suspicious around.
CCTV is no reason. The security system is not the first reason. Education is not the biggest reason. Economy? Economy is the basis. Exactly the biggest reason is because of the social safety net. Korea also has a gap between the rich and the poor. But even the lowest group has no problem in eating and sleeping. They have no reason to steal. Second, conscience and correct behavior are education, but trust and solidarity among the same people are the background. That makes education have more power. Third, security administration, Koreans value the safety of the community as much as individual freedom. That's why the police don't think using CCTV is a privacy violation. They understand that it is to protect citizens who obey social rules. And lastly, Koreans value family honor. Koreans should not do anything against their conscience. .. If you look at one more thing, there are norms that they had in common. It is not a religion in the modern sense, but a teaching about human nature and the just process between man and man. It is the state of the country's ancestors. They have ancestors whose morality and ethics have reached the level of religion. I don't know where those influences remain. If a community is maintained, everyone I met while passing by is no one else. I should be salt to him. No one steals family stuff. These days, Koreans are losing their community spirit due to Westernization, too. Another Ladakh is disappearing.
In Korea, leaving something like a bag, cellphone, or laptop on a chair or table in a cafe means that you have taken the place. 99% of Koreans are not interested in other people's cell phones, bags, or laptops. Koreans just want a good window seat at a cafe rather than your stuff.

It's safe but pointless and quite obtuse to leave your stuff outside intentionally, hoping no one takes it. It's like you can't cancel Korea in case your stuff gets stolen anyway.
Strangely, there are a lot of bicycle thieves in South Korea. Stolen bikes are known to be exported overseas, so I don't know if foreigners were involved in this particular theft, but be careful with your bikes.
