I live in the Netherlands and here almost each cat gets spayed or neutered, especially if you get them as a kitten. We have little to none stray cats! Kittenlady even commented on it when she visited Amsterdam

I'll soon be getting a kitten from an old woman who has two unspayed cats that she lets out. She wanted to let them have one litter each to "experience it once", then had to beg her friends to take in her kittens. She wanted to have the cats spayed when the kittens were weaned but before she could do that, one of the cats got out of the house and got pregnant again. The old woman was even considering killing the kittens (yeah, I know, unfortunately, this is how some old people still think in Czechia) but fortunately, she said she'd leave them alone if there were takers. So I said I wanted one. She fortunately let all five kittens live, but she's still got only 2 takers for the 5 kittens. She's up to here with kittens. I'm looking forward to the adorable kitten but seriously, this is the second "grandma" I know who lets unspayed cats out and then can't deal with the kittens. So anyway, the kitten I'm getting from her is definitely getting spayed when it's old enough. I had been planning to get one from a shelter but promised to take this one because it was a "if nobody wants these, Ima kill them" situation. Shelters are bursting. It's better to fix your cats, there are still plenty of lovely kittens that need homes.

I spayed my cat when she was around 8 months old. Like you said, at first I felt guilty, but then I felt I did the right thing for her. She's a happier kitty and she doesn't go through the 'awful' heat cycle. One thing I want to mention is a few days after the surgery she was back to being herself. She wanted to jump and run, and they are not allowed to do that for 14 days. I had to keep her in a room without any cat trees or anything that would encourage her to jump for those 14 days. So that part was a little frustrating. This video has great information. Thank you!!!

14 days? It’s up to 5 days. Animals heal faster than we do. My cat was jumping around the next day, as much as I didn’t want her too. I did manage to prevent her after that, but she’s a monkey

The problem with shorter than 14 days is that the wound might seem cured but it can open and get infected. 14 days is the very ideal. Fun fact (they asked me to wait 3 months to change my new earring and I did change it after a week, but the risk is obsiously higher) same with this. Probably 5 is enough but it would not be smart for vets to recommend it.
@alicecruse2886

I got mine spayed as soon as the vet would let me wich was when she turned 6 months and i hadn't allowed her to go outside because of the amount of cats in the place where I live like none of the cats make it past their first heat cycle without a pregnancy. i picked her up after the surgery the sedation hadn't worn off yet. 30 minutes later the first thing she did in her still very loopy state and without a handle on her cone was to crawl over to her ball and try to play with it. there has been zero change to her behaviour to what she was like when she was not in heat. the vet had advised she shouldn't jump run or play until at least the bandage was removed and depending on the healing a few days more so around a week. but despite my best efforts my cat was having none of it and was climbing things running and jumping around and attacking every single thing that moved a mere 3 hours after we got home. this did make the healing process longer and i had to take a lot more care the site of the incision didn't get infected cause she did mange to pull it open a few times. but it was still the best decision i made its made hers and my life much easier the past five months. oh we tried to keep her sedated for the first three days so she wouldn't be as energetic but we stopped after day two cause all it did was make her less accurate

I know, where I live (Melbourne, Australia) I've seen how the increase of desexing cats has reduced stray kittens you'd always see running and hiding in old houses, unused places - it's a real surprise to see such a thing these days. I adopted a kitten this April after not having a cat for over 10 years and it was a very different experience. Before, you'd go to the shelter, pick the kitty you wanted, pay and go (price covered spay/neutering). Now, there aren't as many stray kittens, you fill out an application online about how you'd care for the cat, what your home is like, why you want a cat etc, and wait for them to approve you! Thankfully, I got an email asking me to make an appointment to come see the cats/kittens. We've welcomed a lovely new member of our family. It's been great to see the difference - it may mean it's a little harder to find a cat to adopt, but it's for the right reasons. Spaying/neutering helps make better lives for cats.

100% and it also ensures that the households that get a cat are households that can take care of the kitten and it's not an impulse decision. Good luck with the new adventure!

We had to spay “Mandy” because she was screaming 🙀 constantly!! It took a while because all of the Vets had a waiting list with high prices!! We called ALL over and found a surgery center for cats and dogs. This place ONLY spayed and neutered pets, they were awesome. I brought Mandy in at 8am after work, took a nap 😴 and picked her up at 3pm. She did great 👍🏽🙋🏽‍♀️💕🐈

Great information! We got our brother/sister kittens from a local volunteer-run adoption organization and they handled everything for us -- they fostered the kittens with their mom (so they can nurse and socialize with the whole litter while learning how to use the litter box) for 2.5 months, then spayed and neutered them, watched them during recovery. We paid a small adoption fee but it was way less than the surgery would have cost. I highly recommend them if anyone is local to the Pacific Northwest, they are called Northwest Animal Companions. We had all the benefits of adoption well-socialized kittens who were already desexed without any of the stress.

Now I’m curious about the information I received from both my local vet and the breeder I got my two bengals from. They both said to wait a year before having them fixed bc they certain hormones to develop properly. I made it pretty far - about 10 months b4 I had them neutered. I’m sad to say I’ve lost my first Bengal:( it was a lil over a year ago. He was an F5. I have another that is 1.5 yrs & F6. Of course I listened to their advice bc I wanted them to develop into healthy adults. My question is does allowing them to develop longer present a risk behaviorally. You know, like their instincts get awakened and are hard to quell afterwards. My guy that I lost (bc he escaped) was hell bent to get outside. Like unbelievably focused on it. I wonder if he had the surgery as soon as it was safe to perform, would some of these dangerous behavior tendencies been surpressed or diluted? I say dangerous bc my PDX neighborhood is infested with coyotes & has been for years. It is 100% unsafe to let them out. I’m even worried they would snatch them in my presence while harness walking them.

Love your videos and you and your cat, thanks for this one, surprising and reassuring at the same time that Albert is not the end all be all of all cat information, haha. Deferring to an expert instead of talking about it yourself, major credibility boost imo. Although I would like one of these experts to actually talk about the cancers, instead of just casually mentioning it like an afterthought? What is the reasoning here, no ovaries = no ovarian cancer? Is that it? Like cut off their legs so they don't get gangrene? From the sources I have observed, it is a pattern just like this one, how they just mention the cancer in one sentence and move on... most of the disadvantages of not neutering are to US and not to THEM...except potential cancers...
@wurm9316
@wurm9316 Год назад
As an owner of two ferrets and one cat, having had animals all my life, i understand the surgical metholds by their efficiency and convenience, as it'sa one time solution, but i must point out that considering the deslorelin option should be something to shout out more. The animal doesn't have to deal with hormonal disbalances afterwards, as this product doesn't remove organs, and thus, later in life other organs don't carry the overburden of trying to produce those hormones themselves (which in turn can lead, for example, to cysts in ferrets). Sure, it is much more inconvenient as it is a recurrent injection, but way less invasive than the surgery, way less risky (i bet most of you have seen a cat neutering gone wrong, specially in females), may be an option in some cases that the surgery is not possible due to veterinary issues, and also it is the substance used by zoos, so is thoroughly known. I know is not a popular option in cats, but in ferrets is basically the way to go if you don't want to risk some potentially lethal issues (adrenal gland diseases). With this I'm not saying that anyone should neutering surgically their cat, I understand that if there is any chance of scaping, or your lifestyle/ situation is not compatible with taking your cat to get a shot 100€ worth each year, etc... surgical intervention is the way to go, but again I just wanted to put this option under the light, so to speak. If anyone is interested, a youtuber girl whose channel is called "the trained ferret" has a video about this. Yes, it's aimed mainly to ferret owners, but I highly recommend it. In any case, the most important thing is to treat your feline companion well, with good food, affection and good stimulation! (Sorry for the long post, here's a banana 🍌)
