Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports on new research showing that beyond weight gain, sugar can take a serious toll on your health, worsening conditions ranging from heart disease to cancer.
I've gotten some health issues recently where anytime I eat anything sweet I end up with severe weakness, anxiety, full blown numbness, and vision impairment. I used to be addicted to sweets (as most people), but my symptoms have made me wake up and realize I have been slowly killing myself. It's so crazy looking around me seeing my family feeding their children sodas and candies galore. No wonder we grow up with so many health issues!
for those who keep eating sugar - I would like to thank you for your S.S. contribution - I've been spending your money for the last 20 years and will continue doing so - to bad you will never make it to the earliest age to collect your S.S - so please keep eating sugar - you'll be gone by the time your 63 LOL
Congratulations - keep up the good work - you are setting a great example that the WORLD should follow ... The healthiest things can be hard but worth it!!!
GO for it, I started the journey this week, It's a struggle if those you live with are sopping it up so get them on board too. Don't forget carbohydrates are sugar so pasta, bread, potatoes and rice get a sideeye from any diabetic so take note. EAT REAL FOOD PERIOD AND AVOID ANY PROCESSED and you can reverse deadly diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes ect, we really ARE WHAT WE EAT...God bless and stay strong, your fleshly life depends on it. watch Netflix "Gamechangers" and "What the Health", you'll be saying WTFudge!
@Nibbler800 it's only been 3 days and i've done well without candy or sugary drinks but i think I ODd on carbs. I'm drinking a detox tea and will try again tomorrow. ☹
I saw sugar, in a video, being processed from cane. In places, like India, cane juice is sold on the street, but it's natural and all the nutrients are still in it. Our sugar is stripped of everything nutritious and left as a mere shadow of its former self, for our consumption. The molecular change, in its chemistry, is obviously foreign to the plant and any other sugar source anywhere! That would constitute an alien product to agriculture and us. Maybe sugar is even toxic, now that I think of it, but because it's familiar and common, like my granny and my religion, I never questioned it. I had a computer, in 2007. I performed a search on sacred names and church sponsored traditions, for the first time, since I never questioned such familiar, warm and fuzzy ceremonies and names before. The result, after seven years, was the fact that I was confronted with the evidence that my religion is satanic and the preachers, Pope, Cardinals, nuns and priests are satanists, witches and demons. The sacred names are those of Greek demon Gods, like Isis and Zeus and the plan to deceive us was intentional. We were taught to pray to demons, celebrate occult ceremonies and wear satanic symbols. The fact that our food, water and air, are being poisoned, by the government institutions and their friends at Monsanto, proves everything we were told is a lye, because the politicians and pastors know about it, but keep the subject quiet. They don't broadcast that the 15 vaccines, given to newborns, contain mercury to damage their brains, even though they're well aware of it and the medical community only uses radiation and chemotherapy, because they know they don't work; they cause cancer, but if they want to keep their jobs, we must die.
I gave up chocolate & deserts- cookies, cakes ECT for over 5 or 7 years. I was a chocolate freak but was able to give it up and ice cream too. Then afte long time started it again. I’m still a sugar addicte I know it.. didn’t loose weight either way.

Some forms of alcohol are better than others. A *small* amount of vodka, scotch, or gin occasionally is OK for many who are on low carb diets. All the other types are higher in sugar.
Actually Alcohol has zero sugars ( Whiskey, Gin, vodka, all zero sugars ) ... Most beer contain sugar , there is a diabetic beer ( Bud select 55 very low carbs )
lynn.hazlewood lynn hazlewood - You guys are right. Thank you for correcting my error! I always appreciate when someone takes the time to point out - with civility - if I’ve made a mistake. I’m on a specific low-carb diet for gut and brain health and only those were listed as allowable, in small amounts; I jumped to the wrong conclusion, assuming it was because of sugar content. Apparently, tracking down the real reason isn’t easy, but I’ll keep looking, just for my own understanding. Thanks again and have a great weekend! 😊👍
@@altitudeiseverything3163 Thanks for responding nicely. Im Keto /low carb 2 1/2 years myself for all over health . I dont drink much at all. But I have done a lot of research on foods and drinks. Just in case I do want a drink , I know what not to have. Have a wonderful rest of this Sunday :)
I have a solution for you. Eat real food. The only processed thing in my house is cereal, it's the one stupid thing I allow, other than that we buy and eat real food, vegetables, fruits, grain, meats, seafoods, all real actual food, imagine that novel idea? AND, I take the time and effort to GROW things.
@@someguy2135 That's what I'm trying to do. I'm gradually phasing out sugar laden and fried foods. I'm reading and watching videos on plant based eating. Wish me luck 😁
I recommend everyone watch the documentary Fed Up if you haven’t yet. It’s by far the best doc out there on the science and negative consequences of sugar.
I cut sugar out 14 days ago. It was a bitch for the first 7 days, but got easier each day thereafter. I lost an average of .25 lbs a day so far. I recommend it for anyone who wants to feel better.
I cut it out about 12 years ago. There are a few times I've had something with sugar, sure, but then you really notice how your body reacts. Keep it up. You won't regret it!
Jennifer Krupp Thanks for the encouragement. I'm now on day 26 and no longer give sweets a thought. They were passing ice cream bars around the table at a business meeting today and even my co-workers were supportive. "Ted doesn't eat that stuff anymore." It helps to have people supporting my commitment. My birthday comes up this month and my co-workers are planning an alternative to cake. Plus I'm watching fat fall off of my body. Nice.
I have totally eliminated sugar from my diet in every form and have come to realize that sugar is completely unnecessary and that the human body can function without it. I follow a ketogenic lifestyle and my body runs on ketones rather than glucose. I have awesome energy, I'm never hungry or crave food, I'm always alert and my cognitive abilities are amazing. Furthermore, my weight is stable and I have no joint pain whatsoever. I'm 59 years old but look like I'm in my early forties and have the energy and stamina of a guy in his twenties. Sugar is a killer. Believe it!
Yes! Congratulation to you :). I also do keto (I'm 29) and I feel really alert and smarter than before, it's amazing. I thought being tired all the time is a normal adult thing, but it is really not the case.
I have followed a 100% vegan, mostly whole food plant based diet for years now. I am in my 60's and am trim and fit. I do chin ups, weight training, hikes, and love to play Frisbee. I get glowing reports from my doctor, have never needed prescription meds on an ongoing basis. I eat lots of fruit, but no fruit juices. I do drink fruit smoothies, but avoid added sugar. I gained energy when I switched diets, and feel years younger. Sugar is bad for you. So is meat, dairy and eggs. The longest living populations eat little or no meat. Google "Blue Zones" and check out the Seventh Day Adventists who are taught to be vegetarian or vegan.
I stopped drinking sodas 30 yrs, ago, I’m older now, but healthy, not on any meds. I use honey for my teas and do eat lots of dark chocolate, recently due to aches and arm pains went to a doc, he gave me some pills that made my head hurt, toss them pills and started taking omega 3 oil capsules about 6 months now, no more arm pains. I look and feel great (dentist told me last week, I look like a 40 yr old) and i got, more energy than my kids.
@@lorebay2593 I also take (algae based) DHA supplements. My occasional joint pains basically stopped when I cut out the last of the meat (oysters and sardines) as I transitioned to a WFPB vegan diet.
Bruce Schweyer ..Chocolate, ice cream, Mc Donald's , Burger King, What a wonderful way to commit suicide...Don't forget the Black Forest gateux with whipped cream.
Artificial sweeteners are poison for the brain. Stevia is the only safe sweetener alternative that I'm aware of. I use it exclusively in my coffee. Takes a little getting used to, but beats being poisoned.
*Lies* My whole family has always loved sugar and 2 of my relatives lived to be 100 and my aunt is 94 and no diseases run in our family. I eat something sweet every day and have 31 teeth so blaming sugar doesn't work !
I started the Keto diet. I have stopped sugar for 6 weeks. I'm not hugely overweight but the weight I have is quickly dropping off. Pants I couldn't fit into 6 weeks ago I can now fit into them easily. If you start the Keto diet you will find you will start cooking real food and stay away from the microwave stuff. Look at the label. All the microwave food has carbs in it. And yes, you do have the time to cook. You will make it a priority.
When I learned this a few years ago I look at all these fastfood and processed food companies like they are deliberately trying to poison us. Then feel really bad when thats all you can afford sometimes. Smh
@@gaenorharris-obrien9934 I am 75 yrs. old and I remember Julia Child when I was a child. They didn't know as much as they do now. keep eating sugar and suffer the consequences.
EVERYTHING in moderation? Everything? Sugar, alchohol, smoking, meth, heroin... maybe when something is toxic, everything in moderation, not so good policy.
@@bobbifarrell5919 i try to manage sugar intake like this: * stopped using daily pop/"added sugar" juices/no HI FRUCTOSE anything; * Love Coca Cola but only for a treat once in a while; * same for OJ/Welch's grape j; * make own lemon/ limeade with Stevia; * no hi-sugar cereals; * stevia for my tea café; * plan my meals ahead so that I dont get too hungry bc it s then that I crave my fav candy/cookie/cake...then I binge out. In other words I plan at the grocery for access to healthy meals at home or out but I enjoy great (or sensible) ginger/ shortbread cookies at Christmas; ice cream sometimes; key lime pie; birthday cake for an occasion. No I m still here at 81 ty Jesus. My brothers /sister have heart disease. I also was very physically active until I retired two years ago.
Sugar is like alcohol is like cocaine.....that is to say: the pre-consumption anticipations, the during-consumption effects, the immediate post-consumption effects, and the later post-consumption cravings are all comparable. "A half's not enough; A whole one's nearly enough; But two's nowhere near enough!" Go figure.
Amen. Amen. Amen! I've stopped eating sugar along time ago. I'm 71 and doctors say I look 51. They don't believe I'm 71. My blood pressure was just taken at 118/70. The doctor said what are you doing to live like this.
@Renee Tate If vegetarian and vegan diets were bad for you, why are the Loma Linda SDA's one of the longest living and healthiest on earth? One of only 5 Blue Zones. They live about ten years longer than other Californians. mayooshin.com/blue-zones-diet/
@@someguy2135 Hongkong is the biggest meat eater and having the longest life expectancy. Loma Linda and bluezones live long not due to diet but due to healthy lifestyle. No drugs, less alcohol, no tobacco, no late nights, very good community or religious activities.
So, the sugar is the biggest evil, wow, I thought I knew everything about sugar, but when i watched this video I learned things that I didn't know before, thanks sooo much for this great informative video. a big thumbs up!!!!
It's never too late. You can do it. Just don't buy processed foods and sugar. When it's in your home, it's too tempting. Would an alcoholic have alcohol in their home?
whats wrong with fresh fruit or grape juice? nothing. just so long s it is not a packaged grape juice and freshly extracted from grapes it's all good. however I am guessing it is not freshly extracted
What was the point of interviewing a sugar producer expecting him to comment on research that would destroy his livelihood? Like talking to car dealer about how we should eliminate fossil fuels or restrict emissions? Kind of demeaning Dr Gupta
You are being an idiot just because someone tell you that sugar is bad for you then you are going to follow their advice not even knowing anything about this person what if sugar was saving your life from some virus they put out there and it was killed off by sugar you have just been played by someone you don't even know
YAHKEMA H - GET REAL AND WAKE UP .... THIS RESEARCH HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS ... DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE POSTING SOMETHING SO IGNORANT - I HAVE BEEN DOING MY RESEARCH FOR 20 years
I just started June 2019, gave up all sugars, I’m about all sugar-free! Best thing I’ve ever done for myself!! Just wish I’d seen this report back in 2012! I guess it’s never too late! Sugar is toxic!!!!
I lost 110 lbs (50kg) in 2018. Part of the diet I followed, had me stop eating candy bars and drinking soda. All of my blood work improved greatly, including my cholesterol dropping ~100 points (234 to 136).
Why are people even debating about this? Probably just lazy people who don't want to give up sugar. Sure, having an ice cream once in awhile won't kill you. But that wasn't the point of this program. They said people are having too much sugar daily. And it does add up, soft drinks, sugary cereals, desserts, Some people have sugar with every meal and don't think about it. Too many processed food on the market. People should eat natural food, the way it was intended.
I read a book " natural health, sugar and the criminal mind " which was eye opening for me. I live in the town that makes m&m candy. The sugar vapor released in our town could be the root cause of crime in the past and present. It is really addictive and very hard to get off of the sugar train. In the book it talked about employees who work in a sugar environment using mass quantities of sugar to sweeten their coffee. They breath the sugar vapor and it is like eating it.
@@gaenorharris-obrien9934 81 yr old don't speak like that...i find it hard to believe you are this old. Your verbiage use is from younger gens...and the fact that you have several drs you see regularly says you're not as healthy, otherwise youd not be seeing them.

In 2012, I developed acute pancreatitis for the 2nd time from sugar overload and caregiver burnout. I am proof that reducing sugars and simple carbs can reduce the number of ER and medical MD visits dramatically. I was overweight and toxic, almost #200 and lost 65lbs in 4 months from severe pancreatic pain and the toxic effects of sugar and stress on my pancreas. I am alive today because I was willing to take steps to educate myself about nutrition and the benefits of real food and herbs. Thank you Dr. Gupta for getting the word out there. Unfortunately the sugar addicted professionals are working in our hospitals.
I told my father this 50 years ago as he was putting sugar in his iced tea.but it's still great that somebody is still trying to tell the people what we have known
john yudkin a british professor, wrote a book in the late 1960s called pure, white, and deadly, warning us of the danger's of granulated sugar, but his claims were quashed by the food industry
I have been working hard to break my addiction to sugar. It is very difficult but worth it. It has sabotaged my weight loss and I am so tired fighting fatigue constantly. It's the number 1 addictive drug on the planet, I knew this 20 yrs ago and everyone I told thought I was nuts
Sugar is a legal drug. It's administered to our family and friends via supermarket packaged foods, marketing and even nutritional confusion. Like any other drug, "using" or consuming too much of it is bad for you. Sugar isn't bad, too much sugar is.
I cut out sugar from my diet completely a few weeks ago and my blood pressure had dropped so much I’ve had to cut my BP pill in half already and I’m looking forward to eliminating it completely in the future as my body heals from the toxic effects of sugar. Read the labels on things. They put it in everything now a days. I try to stick to pure meat and veggies.
I was taught by my " health nut" teacher in 1975 that sugar is toxic :) and he was mocked by other teachers.... THIS IS A PUBLIC HEALTH AND FINANCIAL CRISIS.
While I do agree that cutting sugar is very healthy, but I’m surprised that they are able to broadcast it since the sugar industry sponsors tv networks.
I thought this was well done and informative! Best diet or regular consumption of food; Protein, veggies and friut! Limit sugar to about 25-30 grams and carb's to 100 or so per day until you reach desired weight. 80+ percent of health is nutrition! Exercise regularly and adequate sleep-top three! Stress highly degrades the body also! Get rid of it! I am a trainer with many years of experience.
5:50 okay, the symptoms came within two weeks, but how long does it take that they disappear, when I quit sugar? And does it include to quit sweetners..?
I strongly agree with the Dr, and that's why I don't eat desserts after meals, I rather drink water after my meals🥃 sometimes only once month I drink a sugary soda drink and the same with desserts...🥤 You can have teas without no sugar...🍵
This is old news, this article was printed in 1970 AWAKE magazine by JW's.... they have known this stuff for years. The “sweet tooth” of the family can be catered to without resorting to white sugar, which, according to one of England’s leading nutritionists, “is the only dietary difference that can consistently be found between persons who develop coronary heart disease and those who do not.”
Big Pharma, doctors and the food industry are all in cahoots to make us sick and keep us that way in order to control and manipulate us. I am their big disappointment because I have cut the cord. No sugar for me. I will not succumb to their agenda.
I was a nurse in the 70's and 80's. Although I did learn in school how to test for blood sugar and how to give insulin, incredibly, I NEVER HAD TO DO IT. Wow. We have a problem. And a costly one at that !! Men--150 calories of sugar daily = 9.375 teaspoons. Women-- 100 calories of sugar daily = 6.25 teaspoons. One tablespoon of catsup contains one teaspoon of sugar.
Walmart puts so many handicap parking spots up close to make it easier for the sugar addicts to get more sugar while riding their motorized carts around the store.
Good observation. They also say "Is associated with" and rarely say "caused by". The evidence in science is always refutable but sometimes accumulates to the point of being just super convincing. Kind of like electricity. We used it long before we discovered what electrons really were. It's still a theory.
Yes, it is. I stopped eating sugar about 3 years ago and I can't recommend it to enough people. Many of my friends are addicted to sugar, but you can't make them quit.. only show it's possible and the effects it has.
scott webber - I’ve gone the no sugar route 3 times in my life, once for 12 years. Each time went back to a standard diet, my health would slowly deteriorate, so I’ve finally accepted that I simply can’t do that. I’ve found that the only way to succeed (for me, at least) is to cut it out of the diet 100%, including hidden added sugars in bread, condiments, everything - no cheating. Yes, honey and all the rest, too! Every time I decided to cheat with a little sweet treat, the sugar cravings would immediately come back with a vengeance! Luckily, it’s much easier to find foods with no added sugars today, but it’s best to make most everything from scratch. Many people don’t “handle” sugar nearly as well as they think. Just a thought . . . 😊
I use to drink 1.5 literes of sprite daily and a catsup addict. any sauce ... ate all the junk foods etc. now I quit all of that for 2 months now. just to get rid of my mild adult acne.. that might came from male hormone imbalance.. idk.. but.. this is my life now
zelen plav very smart move on your part I am the same way with fruit. They are trying to push seedless fruits on us more than ever this is all you see in the forefront of our supermarkets. You can find them in some supermarkets but you have to look around.
