No one wants to hear that their favorite foods contain harmful ingredients. No matter the evidence they will come up with an excuse to continue to consume it.

OMG I totally forgot about that- yeah there would be sugar on the table and we'd all dump it in our cereal! And yet we weren't allowed to eat "sugar cereals" like froot loops because they were bad for us!
@@francislea4700 i think that is an American thing. In Europe we never eat like that so its shocking for me. Even cereals alone taste too sweet for me and they are not popular here. We eat normal foods in breakfast.
There is one important thing to note about this video that is not mentioned in it. The doctor who denies any links between sugar and disease, John Sievenpiper, he has received funding from the food industry, notably from Coca Cola, and has spoken at symposiums sponsored by the company.
YESSSS. This is the REAL problem. The "doctors" who are SUPPOSED to promote health get paid to support the food companies who are doing the exact opposite. It's so aggravating!
I have done all I can to eliminate ADDED sugars. Its been 6 weeks and I feel so good! My skin is clearer and I am no longer a SLAVE to sugar😀 I lost a few pounds too.
could you give us some tips on how to go through the first couple of weeks with this new lifestyle? Because I tried a couple times but failed due to the fact that I didn't realize how addictive sugar is. I want to try again though!
@@FlikkieFloekieFlakkie It's not easy....but it does get better in time....sugar free is a great place to begin....also eat fruit when you want a treat.😃
I quit all alcohol, refined sugar and processed food, and ate a strict whole food diet. Within two months my sleep apnea that was destroying my health was completely gone. Mainly because my body was no longer inflamed. After three months I lost a lot of weight and have no more joint pain. I now walk daily and gym three times a week. I look and feel like a brand new person.
EVERY SINGLE PERSON NEEDS TO WATCH THIS. I applaud you for posting this on RU-vid. I applaud this documentary a thousand times over. Thank you, thank you thank you!!!! I'm sharing this with everyone I know. EVERY ONE.
I've watched a lot of videos on RU-vid, including Dr. Lustig's talks (which I like). This has to be one of the BEST. Too bad others are not seeing it. Only 8,000 have watched this video, while some people talking about how to grow their hair longer get 400,000 plus views. Sad world we live in sometimes.
@Kenya Kiryu Sugar is a drug. Once you get a taste of it, you fall off the bandwagon. However, it becomes easier to start again. I've learned you just can't have any sugar ever. If I mess up, I'm not hard on myself. I make it a point to not eat anything else with sugar and fast for at least 16 hours to burn some of those carbs. Just don't give up. If you mess up, don't keep messing up, let it go and continue.
Glad at 20 that I figured this out. After going Keto and reading every label, I've become aware of just how processed and loaded with sugar our foods are. Oils, meats, nearly everything. I rarely eat anything out of a package anymore, and only if the ingredients meet my standards. I've seen many people give up cigarettes, and other drugs, but rarely do you find someone willing to commit to giving up sugar or refined carbohydrates from their diet. Best health choice I've ever made, plus I learned to cook.
Try not to eat much meat. Monks grow their own food and very little dairy, and that is a treat on the holidays that is why they are so healthy. Watch the documentary CBS interview with Mount Athos
While eliminating sugar from our diet is absolutely essential, someone should do a show on the negative effects of canola or vegetable oils on our diet!
Canola oil is not good, vegetable isnt as bad, but Olive or Avocado oil is the best for cooking. Too many people are scared of fats, but what everyone should be scared of is too many carbohydrates.
Absolutely.....and I'm beginning to discover that olive oil may not be as healthy as it is advertised to be. One of the issues is that what you buy in the store may be adulterated with vegetable oil...or ovely processed olive oil devoid of polyphenols. Who can you trust today in the curious field of 'nutrition '?
@@andrewmays3988 yes you have to look for local certifications or labels with official origin stamps. And try and stick to single country origins. Costco sells good certified EVOO. Also there are websites that show brands that have been tested. Look for those brands near you.
As an African, who grew up in the farm,I must say I didn't know what processed food was When growing up. Everything has fresh from the farm or market. Things like chocolate we had them once in a while, special occasion. And it was not much. I must admit growing up with less did shape me, when it comes to choice of food I eat today. My favourite place in a store is the vegetable section. I can say, am not tempted when it comes to sweets. So yes I do think we need to learn how to live with less, having few choices can help us, that is if we can't be disciplined enough.

Omar Vasquez I understand what you mean. I eat a lot of bread and go out to eat a lot. I know there are many other ways I can drastically reduce my sugar intake.
I am a senior and gave up sugar 3 weeks ago . My arthritis pain is 90% gone and I no longer have balance problems. My brain fog has dissipated and I also lost 2 pounds. I love desserts but love my healthy body more!
After cutting way, way down on sugars & starches, I easily lost 50lbs without exercise & have had no trouble keeping it off. I have no intention of ever returning to my old way of eating.
I also strongly believe SUGAR also effects us cosmetically. There is NO need for a biggest percentage of us to look OLD at such early ages. I have seen the difference in folks who use a lot of sugar look older than those who don't use much sugar. When will a study be done on how sugar effects our cells?
@@lolitapetite1413 that's because carbs are essential to your diet. The problem we are talking about is not about no carbs, but about the amount we eat.

That's what we did and my daughter is obsessed with raw broccoli lol She refused to eat her birthday cake [which was made with banana and apples in small amounts rather than white sugar] so I ate it lol it was damn tasty, but she wanted nothing to do with it. I just started eating low carb, low (almost no) sugar - and already, I feel better. I'm eating mostly fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, etc. Here's the biggest surprise: The food tastes fantastic! I no longer am hungry between meals, my energy and sense of well-being is so much improved, and I can think clearly. Although I'm not diabetic, I was definitely heading there. The hardest part has been figuring out how to cook things. I sit down and cut veggies and/or fruit into whatever I plan to eat that day. Sitting helps make it easy. I never cooked, just grabbed convenience food. Now, I actually enjoy cooking. Before I did this, I thought I was eating well (no junk food, no fast-food, no candy, no desserts, no sodas, etc.) But what I didn't realize is how loaded processed food is with sugar and carbs. It's unbelievable.
Whole grains is also sugar to your body. Just be aware. Even stuff that says keto at the store has carbs. Stick to veggies for carbs and eat alternatives like quinoa instead of rice. Meats & Veggies, no more than 3 meals a day.

Learning to read labels are useful but the real change is: eat things that doesn`t have a label. Its really your best bet. Rice, beans, vegetables, fruits and even meat. Non-processed food doesn't have labels. If there is a label its rarely good for you.
What do you mean? Most all packaged goods have labels that tell you a general composition - even rice and beans. Obviously it depends where you get them, but most still do.
That woman representing the Canadian Food Industry makes me so angry with her lack of concern and coldness about it all. She just kept diverting the conversation with answers that really weren't answers to the actual question.

This has literally scared me. A few years ago, my 3 sisters and I ordered lemonade from Subway. One of my sisters is super sensitive to sugar. She sipped and said it was way too sweet. I said it wasn't sweet enough!! My 2nd sister agreed. My youngest sister- like me - loves sugar, nothing is ever sweet enough for her either. When SHE sipped and I saw the look on her face, I was shocked. I did detox after that but have since fallen OFF THE WAGoN😳. Sugar is not only addictive, but the more you eat the more desensitized you become. I need to clean up my act!!!

This is a great video that provides a comprehensive look into the consumption of eating too much sugar. It sheds light on the research linking sugar to obesity and other diseases, as well as how the food industry has responded to it. Scott Ashe how are you? I quit smoking recently and found I cannot process sugar as well without smoking. Research suggests nicotine helps process caffeine and sugar. All books on healthy eating state that refined sugar is bad for you. Lots of people have been stating it in books, magazines and documentaries on health. Everybody already knows that refined white sugar is bad for people's health. It is stated in MANY books on health. Mr Lustig is another person who has been trying to make it clear to others. It is man who has been putting lots of refined white sugar about in foods and drinks and he needs to take responsibility for his actions and apologise to the planet about it. Man is no hero here, he has caused a lot of tooth decay and poor oral health on the planet. He is the boss of many companies, he has been making a lot of decisions around the world about what foods and drinks to put about. Man has been serving adult sized ice-cream portions to children from vans, in supermarkets ALL the cakes have sugar as the first and MAIN ingredient (the cakes in supermarkets taste really disgusting by the way!), men have been putting lots of super sugary drinks around children on a daily basis as well as around young people and they have been promoting them all over the place instead of drinking tap water. Adult man almost never uses drinking water taps when he is thirsty, he goes out and gets himself a can or bottle of beer or sweet fizzy drink instead!!! He has no clue what a drinking water tap is for!!!
But it depends on the age of the children. We have no control over what our teenagers eat when they are out with their friends. Will they listen to their parents about how bad sugar is? I think not.
John Yudkin was a decent man who tried to stop the rot. God bless him. Good on his son for making sure Mr Yudkin is vindicated for telling the truth; whilst being vilified. So sad.
I should add the first two weeks is a little rough, in fact harder than when I quit smoking 6 years ago. The addiction to sugar is real. But after that and with the positive health changes , I was so happy.
Shop as though you've went out on a hunt and picked from the garden assuming one eats meat. I grew up on a farm in the late 60s into the 70s.. We had chickens, turkeys, geese, cows, pigs and horses as well as huge vegetable gardens and huge wheat fields. We made our own bread, butter and drank raw milk. We hunted ducks, rabbits, deer, moose as well as fished. I don't think we ever went to a grocery store back then that I can remember. We also picked gooseberries, strawberries, Saskatoon berries, pin cherries, blueberries and chokecherries the we preserved and made pies and jams with. This was all in Saskatchewan Canada, btw. The cellar was always well stocked for winter and everyone was healthy as a horse as we worked most all of the day, everyday but for us young ones, it was fun. I sure miss those times. When I was really little I would go to the coop to collect eggs, every now and then I'd find a goose egg in the chicken coop, it was the highlight of my life at the time. lol I remember getting so excited because i didn't know that the geese were laying those huge eggs. Those geese use to chase me and my younger brother all the time, we were so scared of them but in a fun way as we'd scare ourselves. lol

Thanks for sharing! To add to this, sugar has a lot of different names on ingredients labels. The first item on the list is what there’s the most of in a product! Companies don’t want to have sugar on their ingredient list, so they’ll use other names for it. Cumulatively, these different names add up to a good amount of sugar in the product!

This is why I'm giving up on processed food. I'm already vegan and eat way more fruit and vegetables than the average person but I never knew the amount of product that have extra sugar, apparently almost everything processed.
That's not going to happen. I knew about sugar being addictive. It triggers the release of opioids and dopamine that goes to the neurotransmitters that takes it to the reward center. There experts that claim sugar is as addictive as cocaine. The sugar industry know it. Just like the tobacco industry knew their cigaretts were addictive and carcinogenic. And they paid the American Mafia, our government millions of dollars and screwed smokers out of any legal recourse of action. That's the way the Mafia operate. You pay for protection.
Sugar has always been a negative element in my life. It has made me ill. It is very hard to quit! I am constantly battling sugar and cutting down on its use.
Limiting or stopping sugar really helps with weight loss. I stopped eating candy, pop, cake and desserts high in sugar and I lost 25 pounds. I still ate the same food for meals, but cutting out sugary treats, desserts, and pop made a huge difference for me

oh but that could never happen, they need those children to grow up in the dark just as their parents did to continue funding them. because if the new generation stops buying it for themselves, they will stop buying it for their children and when their children grow up they will have stopped buying it all together, and that means that in one generation of growth the sugar industry would have to close its doors for good, and we all know that can't happen, who then would fund these billionaires?
The problem isn't sugar itself, it's the PROCESSED sugar in PROCESSED foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables have sugar, sure, but they also have the dietary fibers to process the sugar without converting it into fat. If you look at processed food labels, look at how many grams of dietary fiber in the food. The number is almost always zero. With out the fiber, the sugar goes to the liver, and gets processed into fat. The lower fat, the more sugar in processed foods. We NEED sugar, but processed sugar will cause obesity/overweight issues.
oo kk Our bodies require carbohydrates and the natural sugars in fruits and vegetables. We do NOT require added sugar, granulated or powdered sugar, sugar from sugar cane, etc. These are recent additions to the human diet.
A very good documentary, giving an insight into the food we buy and consume. I appreciate all the efforts and hard work CBC put in making this. I hope and pray Canadian and other governments together make laws that enable consumers to be much more aware of the ingredients, standardized food labels, educating more people and especially kids about it. This for me personally would be life-changing. Wishing everyone good health and Prosperity.
I can't speak for anywhere but the US, but here every food item other than fresh produce and meats already has a standardized label that lists exactly what you need to know, including amount of carbs, sugars and added sugars. If someone here doesn't already know it's because they don't want to know or don't care. Personally I don't understand that but clearly I'm in the minority of thinking more information and informing yourself is a good thing.
