Is Suspension A Good Idea For A Trials Bike?

My hero's in trials riding all seemed to run some kind of front suspension and I could never really figure out why, it's heavier, less accurate and expensive. I decided to give it a try with some borrowed Rockshox Pike DJ forks that are blatantly too long for the geometry to see what the fuss was about...I ended up getting very surprised!

When I was a kid, a mullet bike was a 24” or 26” bike with a 20” BMX wheel on the front because the kid smashed up the other one and that’s all they could ‘obtain’. Legally or otherwise.

Ali, I really like your comment about trying to keep your videos family-friendly. You've surely go lots of young viewers who will look up to you and want to imitate you - glad you take that seriously. Also, like your comment about keeping your body safe to extend your riding years. Starting bike trials at 60, I really get that idea. If I can practice skills at low heights or near soft surfaces - I am all for that!

Great video Ali! When I first got my Hex I thought my wrist were going to break off because I was so used to suspension and as you know not very fluid. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to continue but I finally got over it in my wrists. I'm still battling tendonitis in my elbow (for like 8 months now!) which I think suspect is partly to do with me riding a rigid fork, partly sucking and partly being old. I've wondered if having a little bit of suspension would be a little easier on me. It's good to see that having front suspension didn't really make that big of difference on techniques as I thought it would. Then again, you're super human! Cheers!

Nice vid - interesting concept. You brought up some old school riders running front and (sometimes) rear suspension. I wonder how much of that was rider driven versus sponsors pushing new products? In Hans Rey's heyday, there wasn't the breadth of biking disciplines. Within mountain biking, it was pretty much just XC, DH, and way off to the side was trials but the bikes hadn't become nearly as distinct or specialized. Keep it up sir!

Back in the 90's when I rode trials, I never rode without a front shock on my 26" bike (which was a modified mountain bike), so it just seemed normal to me. I had a rigid fork on my 20" bike and if you didn't land right from high drop offs, you'd definitely feel it.

I genuinely can't believe how well that worked! I've also heard from one 90s pro that he originally switched to suspension to be able to ride more moto style, carrying speed and rolling more stuff. Would be interesting to hear if there's anything to that.

I love your riding and try some trials style myself but I can relate to what you where saying about the style of bike. The best video for me was when you did the trials bit on your 5010. Normal trials stands far from normal mountainbiking and just a small croud looks at this. But if you go on your full sus like Akrigg then a whole lot of non trials guys get “inspired” ;-p. Keep up the good work Ali, hope you don't feel the blues to much these days.

3 yrs ago i have a two brake dj bike that i rode trials. Twas a Da Bomb Tora Bora with Duke U turn Shocks. Then upgraded to Sonic Boom 26", then into a rigid fork. Till now im riding a DJ-built-trials bike. The only thing with older supension models is its heavy weight and high wear and tear, but handy when doing higher drops.

Hi Ali another great film, but as far as suspension forks go I myself find them hard going but as I am fifty next month I do admit to preferring RIGID forks up front and with my hard mountain bike I pretty much ride with the forks locked and so I am thinking about swapping these out for Rigid forks instead and I also have a set of SE RACING BMX cruiser handlebars on this 29er hardtail of mine. However I think that experimenting is always a good idea and without this we would never know if it is right or wrong.

I tried sus forks on my inspired a few years back, indeed found the front end was much easier to pick up as it shifts your weight further back. I'm nowhere near as good as you though so after mucking about for a couple of days the proper forks went back on as the extra weight was very noticeable to me. Also I heard sponsorship had quite a lot to do with guys riding with suspension forks, could be wrong though.
