Now that I have signed my first deal through a TAXI listing, I decided it was time to share my experience for those who are thinking about joining. In this video I will share some common mistakes and misconceptions and also share some tips on how to be successful as a member.

You had to mention the Road Rally, which, in my mind, is what makes paying the membership fee worth the expense. I went to last year's Rally, and it was quite the experience: met so many people, some of which I have become friend with, gained quite a bit of knowledge around the industry, and even met one music library owner who later on offered me a deal through a Taxi forward (and he did remember me from the Rally!)

I was going to do a video about Taxi and basically say the same thing, but yeah you covered it. You totally nailed all the points IMO. Especially the point about $5 for feedback. I mean, I know agents and they don't give me feedback, they just say no thanks, ha. The feedback helps us to improve our craft. If you don't understand this as a composer/producer, or that with Taxi you're writing with specific licensing objectives in mind, than Taxi isn't the right fit for you (and this is no reflection on your skills or art). Thanks for doing this, saves me the hassle of having to do the video myself! :-)

M Kirby’s video was great, I’m new to this and his video was packed with great information but when he said only $5 I got so excited WOW!!! that’s cheap! I looked it up it’s really $300 (still pretty good price considering what you get from Taxi) plus $5 for every song submission. Even so, very good explanatory video, I will forward to my producer friends.

Thank you for the video and information about Taxi, @Chayse Freedom. I've been wondering rather if I should sign up because of my completed demos as a songwriter specializing in R&B and/or rap. I have some ideas for pop, rock, and even country too. It sounds like Taxi will save a lot of time as the middleman directing my music on where it needs to be.

Cool video! Taxi for me is like an apprenticeship.When you're learning a trade you don't get a fraction of the pay the mastercraftsman you're working with gets.Your recompense comes in acquisition of skills and experience.It takes a while to become a plumber who can cope with any emergency.In a couple of years experience builds up.All of the deals are there for the taking when our skills are up to it.

It's great when it happens.I've been down the same path and when BMI statements start to quietly appear it's a blast.I got to my first Road Rally last year,travelling from the UK and all of the Taxi crew are so incredibly welcoming and kind.Still very much in awe and grateful almost a year on.

Hi, thanks for this testimony, I am considering whether to register on TAXI and I was looking for someone like you who shares his experience on this service; however, it seems that in addition to the cost of $ 5 for each track proposed there are also $ 300 per year to obtain the services, can you confirm?

Glad I could help. Sorry for the delay, but yes that is correct. I still consider myself pretty rookie in the business but I did sign 10 tracks with another library last month as well. Perseverance is paying off

Thanks for this. BUT what we're all thinking is, how much money are you making? The payoff for this stuff seems to be very uncertain and even a miserly payoff seems to be at least five (possibly 10) years away for most people, which frankly seems quite insane.

I wouldn’t say it’s uncertain. I’d actually argue that income from sync licensing is probably one of the more stable bets in a music career given that there are more TV shows and content being made now than ever. Will it take time to earn a full time living from it? Absolutely but that’s the same with all paths in the music industry.

how many years of trying and how many thousands of dollars spent on yearly memberships for what? one placement? or more? 🤔 it's seems like similar to work in TV and film industry as an extra or actor from a talent agency.. (as i do) you pay agency a yearly fee, but you go into that with no expectations and you may just lose that money each year if you don't score a job. you are either background extra or featured..

how does it work, do you search for listings there or they have to hire you from your page?

You submit to specific listings. Your submissions go to a TAXI screener and they either forward it to the company that requested the music or they return it. Either way you get a critique on your submission from the screener

I was in Nashville for over 20 years and never met anyone who got a decent deal through Taxi. If want to get songs published, you need to make the contacts in the business, face to face, and you need to have good songs. There are tons of Taxi type businesses online who will take your money but won’t get you a song placement.

I do wonder what their "success" rate is. If we define success as earning a decent, comfortable life (itself not easy to define) from it, I wonder how many manage to do so, vs the number of those who try. And how long did it take them to get to that point. My guess is it could be fewer than one tenth of one percent. Such is life, I suppose - in all areas of the arts, maybe the numbers are broadly similar.

Taxi doesn’t work for everybody… I was a member of taxi for about 6 years on and off, had quite a few forwards but no deals came my way. I’d posted on the taxi forum asking what was I doing wrong with my music, And a lot of members replied saying they couldn’t believe I hadn’t had any of my tracks signed… I decided to not renew my sub and started looking at other options I’ve since signed a deal with a UK Publishing company and have been collaborating with people all over the world….. Taxi is a great form for meeting and working with other songwriters & Musicians

Cumulatively it took me almost 3 years. But the amount of tracks that I submitted before getting a deal was less than 50

Yea if you mean a songwriter for major label artists there are opportunities for that listed sometimes. Mostly in country and pop though, sometimes R&B and occasionally hip hop. I don’t pay much attention to them though since I’m focused on instrumental.

if you do cues for film, tv and commercials you might find some success with taxi. but if your goal is to get placements with major artists, forget it.

Do you mean a full time composer as in someone who is hired to score a TV show or movie? If so, then it’s not often that TAXI gets requests for that. Most of the requests will be from music libraries or music supervisors for what is often referred to as library music. In that case then yes there are handful of members earning six figures off of their royalties like Steve Barden, Matthew Vander Boegh, Chuck Henry, and Stephen Baird. I myself know a couple of people who used TAXI to learn the ropes, get music signed with a couple of libraries and then just continue to build working relationships those libraries.

I know several people that started with Taxi and now make their entire living writing music for tv. It is rare, but it happens. A whole lot more are making several thousand dollars per quarter. Tons of tv sync composers have full time jobs and do sync as a side hustle. Everyone has their own goals, but if you want to purse writing music for tv as a full time career, find another job that can pay your bills while you work several years to build momentum.
