I agree with you. We already knew the series x would be incredible, we hardly need reviews, but the s is something and for players like me it's great, so I'm happy he decided to review that one.

Agreed. I’m not the target audience (well I’m getting a PS5 first) as the X simply have so much more (memory, memory, speed, physical media). It’s going to be interesting to see if people go for price (S) and are happy with it, or opt for performance (X). Also, while the S doesn’t seem quite as bad as I would have guessed, I wonder if targeting both S and X will be a detriment or simply the same but X can play it at a higher res/frame rate. The RAM I think might be harder to work around though. Happy I’m not a game developer (for many many reasons. Be nice to them, it’s more often than not a terrible job.)

@@amazingflavour In a theoretical territory where money (and space) doesn't count so much, it'd be interesting to have X at your living room wired to the main high spec TV for new generation games and S at your dorm for retrocompatibility. Something like this would postpone the need of extra storage if you had many games, and have games to come. True life, scarcely it'll happen. Maybe in crowded houses of students or big families with nice incomes.

I'm getting it too. I see no upside to the x because I already know I'm not going to be running 4k at 120fps because I can't support that with my monitor. The storage doesn't matter much to me because you can delete the data of the games u own(i think). I think the S will be great! Update: I got it and I love it!!! Yup. I have a 4k tv but it doesn't do 120 hz. I have a gaming monitor that does 1080 120 hz. Right now I don't have the money to buy a whole new display. 120 hz is way more important to me than 4k, so I'm just gonna save money and get the s for now. In a few years there will be a refresh anyway, and 4k 120 hz tvs will be more affordable, so that's when I'll make the jump.

Well the digital PS5 beats it. Because it's only $100 more, has double the storage and still packs a full next gen chipset in it not this heavily cut down GPU with less than half the performance. It is way better value as far as budget consoles go.

Exactly and plenty of us have external HDD's which are perfectly fine for storage. You don't even need to redownload just do a quick transfer over of games when needed.

Yep. I rationed save space on my PS2 memcard, I rationed space on my 4gb xbox 360 (though I did get a hard drive to play destiny and GTA much much later), and I ration space on my sd card-less switch. I'm a professional at this point.

Yup. I only play 2 games at a time at max. Mostly I don't play any game until the one I have downloaded isn't finished.

@@PurooRoy but even then, in the short-term: the vast majority of games atm can run directly off of a harddrive anyways (6-8gen games) it's not like owners are beholden to the SSD only for gaming. Also also: cold storage transfers will make switching files of 9th gen games very seamless. PS5 won't even have that ability at launch (no offence to owners, it's just a massive shock/surprise not to support that, esp. for datacapped owners)

Yeah that's the only downside in my opinion but the one titles and past I'll play on a Xbox one external hard drive. The True next gen games I'll have to play on the SSD I hope the expansion card goes down in price but SSD technology is expensive so that's the price you pay.

No, PS5 digital edition with double the storage capacity and more than double the processing power, and only for 33% more price is a better budget option. Series S would only be feasible at around $250, as of now.

@@sairsonat9816 For people like me who stopped using a ps system since the ps2 days, it's the better option. the console is also much more compact and I don't need anything above 1080 60hz anyways. Game pass is also a great deal that makes up the difference pretty quickly.

It's also to capture the non-early adopters, budget gamers and consumers in countries that can't afford or want to wait for a price drop but wants next gen gaming. Segmenting the market like this to increase early buyers into the console and keep them on the platform. No doubt backwards compatibility was part of this strategy. VERY clever move.

I'm really looking into this just for the SSD. I have less than 10 titles and don't really need an upgrade from the One S. But 299 is not much for me either.

the problem with the series S is the lack of the disc drive. (important for BC) I don't mind a 1440p or 1080p system, but no disc drive is a deal breaker I'd rather save more and go for Series X or go for the Xbox One systems (excluding the Xbox One SAD)

But it doesn't have a disc drive so all those old games you have in a cupboard you won't be able to play...

It also captures someone like me. I have bought a ps5 but the series s is the perfect little games pass machine for a reasonable price.

What? Wasn't it a thing on Xbox One S/X and PS4's? It's a handy feature I still use a lot on my PS3 slim. P.D. Ok, now I see that no Xbox has supported HDMI-CEC so far. I'm glad it is now. As I say, it's a simple feature but very convenient, for example: - You turn the console on, your TV also turns on and/or changes to proper HDMI channel. Also the other way around: if you change to the proper HDMI channel, your console turns on. - When you turn off the TV, the console also turns off (unless it's on a game). - Just with the TV remote, you can navigate menus and play/pause video. Specially handy when watching Netflix, HBO... or a BluRay/DVD.

@@DP12321 It's weird but maybe it had to do with the Xbox One capabilities to send IR signals to the TV, and the HDMI-IN. I'm not sure how all that worked but I remember 2013 vibes for the "ultimate multimedia/TV set-top box".

problem is, cheap is not the same as good value. for me is a no go, here some reasons. -no disc drive, so no second hand games, neither selling the ones you didn't like/already finished. - back compatibility limited also because of the latter. - Storage too scarce. Even for the casual gamer, like e.g. if you are a call of duty-fifa player by installing the latest 2 call of dutys means no space left for a fifa. - storage expansion at $210 so sum more expensive than Series X. - back compatibility with One X not supported as Series S has less RAM - Games that will look straight different, like DMC 5 Special Edition where Ray tracing will only be available for the big console and PS5

The series X is certainly a step up from the One s by a wide, 5 year margin.

I just wonder if, in 3, 4 or 5 years time if you'll still feel the extra $200 you spent to get him a Series X. This is a cool machine but the SX brings so much power and will bring so many graphical enhancements and the gap will widen as games get more intensive. I see a LOT of younglings trying as hard as they can to sell their Series S for an X in a year or 2. Just my 2c.

@@Savage-sq9vq to be honest, it’s okay. Seems to struggle with triple a titles like Star Wars squadron. Saw some serious FPS dips and textures are a bit blurry. I bought the system mainly for mlb the show and have a gaming pc as my main. If I were you, I’d wait to find an Xbox series x.

Yeah, I guess they had to cut off something for a lower price, the disc drive obviously depends on whether you have discs or if you plan on buying some or not, and for storage I think the best thing to do right now is to wait for cheaper but still competitive external ssd's if you want the next gen loading speeds and that stuff, but still you can always save your ssd for next gen games and use an external HDD (8tb if you want) for all your other games (xbox, x360,x1, or next gen games that you won't play that much), and well, obviously you can just install a game, complete it, and uninstall it to free up storage.

I hope they release one with a disc drive down the line.

Depends in how you play games. I play one game at a time, so for me personally quick resume is useless. For other people it is great.

Reviewers like it because they are testing multiple games at once and quick resume makes switching between games convenient. The average user won't play more than 1 game at any given time and even if they want to, the fast SSDs already lets you boot games much faster than before. It is kind of debatable whether reserving a good chunk of the SSD storage is worth it for this feature when the free SSD space is already so small.

Quick resume should take up less space on Series S. Since it's basically a save state, that means halving the ram should roughly halve the storage footprint. That said, it'd still be nice to see the option to set your Quick Resume game count. Microsoft currently guarantees 4, but I'd love to see the option to decrease that if you're less interested (2 games, for example, would work great for most people to have some storage back), and even to increase it, say if you've bought the expansion card. If you had 1.5 Tb of storage on a Series S, it'd be really cool to use it as a fast back-compat machine with a ton of quick resume games (since it takes half the space, you could crank that number to like... 16 with only 200Gb).

I don't understand quick resume in an age where games load almost instantly anyway.

@@retroresolution - I plan on HDMI modding my OG X-Boxes. $60 for an HDMI mod board is a great deal & I still get access to 100% of the OG XBox library, which M$ will likely never achieve through backward compatibility.

missing disc drive really sucks. overwise i would actually think about getting a series s only for playing my original xbox games with better performance. then the small ssd wouldnt be a problem. for next gen i would stick to my gaming pc anyway.

@@6ch6ris6 - I have a 3rd OG X-Box that I modded with a spare 500GB Samsung EVO SATA3 SSD drive (using an inexpensive SATA/IDE adapter). The load times are much improved, especially noticable on start-up.

I was getting 50 mbps on cable and I'm still getting 50 mbps when I upgraded to fibre (Limitation of ISP, not infrastructure), so not the greatest analogy. DOCSIS 4.0 (telecommunications standard for cable) supports up to 10 gbps.

Yeah I hated the first Xbox One because it was as fat as a VHS player.

I used to back my hard drive up onto VHS away back in the day using a funky adaptor for a mac classic at first, then a PC later. With a decent Sony VHS recorder you were only encountering problems with 0.1% of files, more reliable than floppies of the time! I'm sure you could get more data on it that a double sided dual layer DVD.... Edit: loads of people are probably googling this going "no fucking way", then discovering that actually a VHS tape is quite a good backup medium 🤪 cheap, easy to obtain, can take a drop down a flight of stairs.....

It's a shame that no one has some up with a solution yet for transferring your physical games to digital copies. Several years ago, Best Buy offered a trade-in service where, for $5 per title, you could bring in your DVDs and upgrade them to Blu-ray. Would be nice if Xbox would ship you a box, you stick your games in, and for maybe a flat fee for like $50, transfer all your titles over to your digital catalog. Maybe up to a certain number (30?) so people don't abuse the service too much.

If you have an XONE and insert the disc it’ll act as a key and if you bought it online so you’ll always have it.

I have the same problem. I own 114 xbox games on physical disks from og xbox over to 360 and xbox one (number still rising). I'm looking forward to play my old games on the series x. I hope Microsoft enlarges the list of backward compatibility

That's exactly right. I mostly play through my games one at a time and delete them accordingly, so storage is rarely a problem. If you want to revisit older titles you can always download them again.

It's definitely a downside, but yea personally I don't keep many games on my pc unless they are a consistent game I play often. Like I really enjoyed the yakuza series and they are really fun, but storywise it doesn't exactly change much so I tend to drop them off my pc after a while and redownload it when I feel like playing it again.

More often I find the digital copies to be cheaper than the physical copies. There are deeper cuts on prices for them and I'm okay with just going digital. Playing on pc with steam is practically the same. It was just a simple choice to pick this one for the affordability and it's capabilities. I'm loving the series S.

I'm also a PC gamer (and I used to be a huge Nintendo fan,) and I'm still excited about these next gen consoles. What attracts me the most from the Series S? An impressive catalogue of old games (from the OG Xbox, the 360 and the Xbox One) on a $300 console. Some of those older games even have higher resolutions and higher framerates than when they originally came out (including OG Xbox games!)

I'll be getting the S because all the games I play I either own on my Xbox account, or the game is available on Gamepass

If they would allow me to plug KBM into my PS5, I wouldn’t request so many of their titles for PC. It’s basically the only draw. Not that making requests is bad, all things considered. I also own a PS4 and have already pre-ordered my PS5, but like you, I’m a PC gamer at heart, so it will always be my first. With all these talks about 30fps during the last generation, I feel privileged to have always played between 60 to 120 fps. Horizon Zero Dawn was my favorite PS4 game, then they released it on Steam, which allowed me to play it with KBM, and I think it’s 10x better. That’s hyperbolic, but it speaks to how naturally I can handle controls with my preferred/first control method. That natural feeling made playing it on PC so much fun! I did get the platinum on PS4, and I’m one NG+ Ultra Hard play through away from getting all achievements on Steam. I love that Sony inspires creativity in its first-party titles, so I love consoles at the end of the day. Just throwin’ this out there, my most “double-dipped” game is Skyrim. Bought it on PC (VR version, too), Xbox 360, PS4, & Nintendo Switch.
