Is the 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline a better SUV than a Jeep Grand Cherokee L? 

I watch Doug Demuro’s videos in the background when I do mindless tasks, but I watch your videos when I actually want to get a virtual tour of the car before I buy it.

My vote: 22 Explorer Timberline I bought my white on black Timberline on May 29th 2022 and have had zero regrets. In sport mode, it's way fast enough for anyone but an Andretti. Rides so smooth, and handles like a higher-end model in turns and exceleration. Every seat is very comfortable, and the a/c and heat blast perfectly when needed. Road noise is at a minimum, and the rack crossbars I put on make it stand out from the pack a little more. Enough room for grocery halls and camping trips to the lake with my 80 qt cooler and ebiike. With enough room leftover to sleep in. People today judge vehicles by charging ports, like they used to do with number of cup holders. I've grown up since then. I don't buy offroad vehicles to use as a mobile Netflix or Twitter feed. Live on!!

First of all Happy Birthday🎉 to the amazing Lori who works so hard for us all and even works her ass off for Joe. Now for the explorer, I love the mountain/outside style if that makes sense and the inside I really like the inside and the green style seats.

This still my dream Ford Explorer I can buy.

Just bought mine 2 weeks ago and love it. Got mine with the panoramic moon roof in the forged green metallic color

There might be a lot of quality issues with the Explorer, but it will always be the best looking

I'm happy with my Timberline. 80mph feeling like 60 must count for something. Doesn't require premium fuel like Jeep turbo. Gets 19mpg instead of 16 like 4Runner. Can't find a Bronco. Best option of competitors.

I have the timberline(the special edition) and the car is great. The panoramic roof is with it and the car is very smooth to drive.

My biggest zonks are missing hybrid version and that material on the middle part of the seats.

Very informative review, thank you and Lori. But like you said you’ve had many reviews on Explore, so you probably had many zonk in mind before reviewing this one.

All lighting on every trim level of every type of vehicle should be led in this day and age!!

I like the engine sound, power seems enough with efficiency.

Which do you think would be better to take off roading especially on the beach in obx or Wilmington area the ford timberline or grand cherokee laraedo altitude or limited. Im looking at the limited for this or timberline only because the overland is well into the 60ks but ill probably take it out to left field and end up with a 4runner just not much room in one with the 3rd row seats. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Overall, looks like a great vehicle but unfortunately in “Hoods” across America, if you remove the badging …. It will always be an off-road police interceptor 🤷🏽‍♂️ #stateparkpolice

This Timberline ain't bad Joe. But I would definitely go Grand Cherokee L. Zonk the PowerPlant, zonk the horn button, zonk the no connectivity in the back, etc. Those are things you will get in the Grand Cherokee L. Pricepoint is alright, I just think Ford really misses out on opportunities to make their special trim vehicles stand out from the crowd, which is sad. 😔

Like The the 2016-19 Models of The Limited or Platinum Package with the V6 Models and the Older Models 1995-2010 with the V8 Optional Models. 1995-2001 with the 5.0V8 and 2002-10 with 4.6L V8 and they All Had the Eddie Bauer Package and they also Had the Explorer Sport Trac has Well

Joe Should Test the ST Package with the 3.0L V6

I wanted to love this, but I test drove one a few weeks ago and something just felt off with it. I couldn't get the seating position right, some things in the interior felt cheap, etc. I went in this and then drove a Telluride which was SO much nicer in every aspect. Unfortunately these are the only things on the lot right now with Kia being 9-12 months out from building orders. The 2.3 is fine in this but I would prefer the 2.7 like I have in my Fusion, but I guess they needed enough of a split between this trim and the ST with the 3.0.

it would have been lovely if it has the hybrid engine and bigger infotainment display.

Could you get a ST Explorer and "Timberline" it with different shocks, wheels and tires?

Not bad looks kinda better than the last gen the engine bay is smaller than I thought. 19 in the city 22 freeway? My Grand marquis can get the same if not better here I thought it gets really good mpg. I still find it crazy how ford stopped making the crown vic and had this be the main cop vehicle

Not quite the level of a GC-adjacent model, the Overland. The Explorer lacks the air suspension, rear ELSD, and 11" of ground clearance, and that's before we get to the Trailhawk. BUT I am glad to see Ford offer some type of offroad variant for the Explorer. Ford wants all of the focus on the Bronco, so it makes since they didn't go too crazy on true offroad goodies here.

Not a lot of people know this, but orange or red tow hooks add an inch of ground clearance.

I love the new explorers and the Timberline would be my go to if it didn't have the interior colors. I wouldn't want the green. And IMO the horizontal screen is not big enough.

It’s nice looking but I’d go Grand Cherokee. I remember the “where’s the beef” ad. I was saying that when you raised the hood. Ford had problems with the 2.7 liter in the Bronco dropping a valve and destroying some engines. I don’t think the Explorer has had that problem. Thanks Joe. Nice job! Something I was wondering, literally every single trim level of the explorer now come with black mirrors, even on platinum and king ranch 🤔🤔

Wonder if there's any performance accessories for this through Ford performance really surprised they didn't put in a carbon fiber, strut, tower brace, and a performance air filter cleaner box.. something.. not really that hard to do. Don't see it available in their Ford performance shop.

Ford should definitely think about giving us a true offroader and the answer to that is a raptor. Throw a V8 under the hood like the upcoming raptor r and you got one hell of ride on your hands

I would prefer a V6 and maybe some Realtree camo trim

Nice Explorer and I love the way it looks yeah it's not all about perfection or else, the car would've been boring and I love the interior.

I wish the explorers had the new f150/bronco screen. I despise the vertical screen. Apple CarPlay is so tiny with that vertical configuration

Joe, nice vehicle but it falls short on features compared to Grand Cherokee. It needs the bigger engine and the interior feature are nothing special in my opinion.

Not better than the GC, but it does look good, and it’s probably a better value than the Jeep trailhawk which can get into the $60k+ range real easily.

I love Fords SUVS and pickups take the Grand Cherokee has better looks but still as long have a Happy buyer matters can go with the Explorer love all the midsized SUVS including the Pathfinder which is my favorite of all. If was to buy a new SUV tomorrow rather be Durango or Explorer think choose the Explorer. I love this SUV but that Grand Cherokee looks more upgraded guess because it's new the Explorer been out for the last two years so go with the Grand Cherokee probably got better features. My Timberline has paint color matched mirrors, a wireless phone charger in front of the center console and a panoramic sunroof. Maybe it comes with the Timberline Technology package. 🤷

I watch alot of your reviews and like each way described the vehicles. One thing could be looked at only by me. I can't fully see the car on the descriptions, what I mean ai like the camara angles but you're pointing to the bumper or moving your hand in front of it first. I'm trying to imagine looking at this car for 5 years or just 3 or not at all. Tell me what it is and what it will do and please move. I hope this observation finds you well. Keep up the great work!

Does it...come in green? Ah the MPG makes sense now. An inch taller, so skid plates underneath, heavier tires etc. Hm.

Jeep is not worried about this vehicle. It is no match off-road for the mighty Grand Cherokee, which my brother has for driving up to his Colorado mountain cabin. They probably should have put in a hybrid system so that it could have more pep, and even higher mileage. But for something where they didn't want to spend much money, it at least moves in the direction of off-road capable.

Wow, I was expecting you to say it had the 2.7l EcoBoost, not this Pinto has-been, (though 300 hp out of it is decent... for a Mustang...). Toyota even have it as an option really sucks, as it was looking real nice

I don't like the Explorer Timberline, I think Ford didn't put much thought into it. I got the Expedition Timberline and it has the H.O. V6, Big 15in screen, huge panoramic sun roof, sits up pretty high! I raised my 2016 Expedition and this dam Timberline still feels higher! Explorer Timberline is a hard pass!

I saw a RU-vid video of the Ford Explorer but a 2023 model year from Ford. If I choose between the Ford Explorer Timeline or the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, I would choose the Ford Explorer

Very nice looking Explorer. Too bad they were so conservative with the engine. The infotainment screen is waaaaay too small. This is 2022. Nobody wants a mini screen anymore. I don't see a premium B & O audio system either.

Ford should make a timberline ST

The exterior looks great, but that interior looks like a rental car. I would take a JGC over this any day.
