I don't believe any Volvos have a motorized steering column. I've read that Volvo made that choice for safety reasons, in the event that the driver needs to be extricated after an accident.

Note to reviewer do you homework! Volvo puts safety first so in a collision you don’t want an electric steering wheel in case you get pinned under the wheel a manual will allow you to move it out of the way.

We bought a 2021 xc 90 used with 9k for 71k in 2021. It had a 82k msrp sticker, very nice car, so we are going on our 3rd year ownership with 48k on it. We love the car, the best luxury car. I was thinking about a Mercedes but the treatment I got when I drove my old rav 2012 v6 to the dealership. I left and I paid cash for my Volvo. Recently I bought a xc 60e loaded, Love the radios in these cars and the air suspension. No issues or problems with the cars. Great deal 73 k price tag for 54500. You can find some great deals on these cars with a few miles.

We test drove a 2022 T8 XC60. Had 2000 miles on it . They were asking 59k. But ended buying a 2022 XC90 T6 Polestar with 12k miles. My wife likes the XC90 more. The XC90 has much more leg room in the back. It has a 78655 MSRP and we got it for 55K. I thought that was pretty good price. Plus it still has the free maintenance thru Oct. 2025 and b2b thru Oct. 2026.

The reason I didn't buy the NX or RX, is because in the UK to get the under-thigh-extending support you have to have an RX Takumi... and the Takumi comes with a sunroof (no option to not have the sunroof), and my head hit this sunroof... .... so, what have I just bought? An XC60 T8 Recharge Ultimate.. Maybe you have more flexibility with what options you can get (or not) in North America - over here in the UK there are very few options as the XC60 T8 Recharge Ultimate pretty much comes fully loaded on a take-it-or-leave-it basis! PS like your very clear Volvo reviews so much, I even showed one to my elderly mother (who I think is keen to try out Power mode...)!

The thing I don't understand with these PHEVs is, why do they bother making the ICE so complicated. You would think the ICE would just be treated like it's a very simple backup to the electric power unit. I kind of think BMW got it mostly right with the i3 REX except for the fact that the petrol tank was too small. I know that 90% of my driving would be electric with a PHEV. I love the Volvo designs and I'd consider a full XC60 BEV if it wasn't so overpriced. XC40 recharge with the first package is 71k CAD here in Canada. That's a Model Y AWD..... hummmm
@donswier
@donswier Год назад
I agree. When the ICE acts purely as a generator, you no longer need VVT, ability for high revs or even turbos. A very simple but power dense ICE is the answer. Did you own a REx? That realization came to me during ownership: 24,000 annual miles on 25 gallons gas. We'll see if Mazda's plans for the Wankel rex in their MX30 takes that approach.
@ukgroucho
@ukgroucho 10 месяцев назад
@@donswier Good points from you both. The ICE is not a generator, it's a secondary engine that is called in when needed. (I think Mitsubishi may have done something different) And that is where simplicity should be a bonus. I really like(d) the Mazda CX-60 PHEV approach with a simple 4 cylinder naturally aspirated 2,5l ICE working with a decent electric motor. NO turbos or superchargers or whatever to worry about. Also liked their smart arrangement of having the motors inline with clutches so they both feed the gearbox so you always have 4x4. BUT Mazda do not seem to be able to build that complex line-up of components to be consistent. I returned mine after 3 and a half months and a few fix attempts because of a horrible resonance (I assume from the drive train) at 25 - 45 MPH. Lots of other folks with the same issue. Nice idea Mazda but you gotta build it to work. Sadly I think the 'simple' electric motor drives the rear and the ICE drives the front is simpler, albeit not as elegant

European cars cost a lot of money and there is a robustness about the Volvo that isn't quite in the Kia/Hyundai. The Lexus is a great car too but it is different. It's more fluid and softer where the Volvo feels robust and has an underlined firmness. I don't think you need to spend north of $70K for it though. You can option out the Volvo for less. Also, I think Genesis does compete well with Volvo and Lexus. About the screen size, this is an almost 7-year old design. The new Volvo EX90 has a 14.5 inch screen. This has a 9-inch screen.

Model Y doesn't come close to the refinement or build quality. Teslas are tech cars, not refined cars. So I don't think the Model Y is worth the money over a premium Volvo. But opinions vary on this.
@Henttari
@Henttari Год назад
If you have a cold winterin your location, Tesla's doors will not open until you melt ice from the windows and handles...so crappy designing for the northern countries. Polestar or Volvos are much better for this reason, no such problems. In warm climate Teslas are ok, except if it is raining....the rain will flow in to the trunk directly when opened, so poor desing again. And the feel in Tesla...not even near to the premium cars, for example at least in Model Y the center console is wobbling unlike in other more premium cars. So better to test carefully before you buy!
@jameskench8889
@jameskench8889 Год назад
@@Henttari Think you need to reeducate your opinion, the water in the trunk issue was solved in 2019. The frozen door handles, admittedly a poor design but if you plug in and schedule a warm up then it's no problem. Alternatively, you can warm it up from your phone during breakfast, the energy you use warming it up you'll probably regain during your drive from a better km/kw ratio. Centre console doesn't wobble at all on mine. Before you ask, no, I'm not a Tesla fan boy, I've just ordered an XC60 T8 Ultimate but simply for the convenience while we shift to pure EV. Tesla have completely changed everyone's expectations of the whole ordering process, the idea of over the air updates etc. OK, the interior isn't premium but they've forced other manufacturers to change a lot of things and that can only be good. I'll be switching back to pure EVs in a few years when they add 1 or 200km of range.
