Is the 2026 Rivian R2 a new midsize SUV WORTH $45k?

I reserved one the moment RJ rolled it out at the reveal event. I can’t wait for it! Great coverage, as always, Joe, but you missed some other great stuff. There are 2 glove boxes, there’s the signature driver’s side door flashlight, the passenger side door mini charger/hand warmer, the flip out shelf in the inside of the lift gate, the pop-out rear windows and the drawer in the center console. Thanks for the fantastic video, though! Love seeing more of this awesome EV SUV I can’t wait to get my hands on!

I'm not into EVs, but I love this. If they can bring this to market on time at the promised price, Rivian will have pretty much secured their future.

OMG I have always wanted a R1T, but couldn't afford the 90K price tag. This Rivian R2 is SWEET and if the starting price is really 45K with one motor and it has most of the features of this model without ballooning to 60K, I have found my next vehicle.

This is probably the best EV package I've seen so far. Not too large such that range and charging times will be impacted, but enough useable space such that you can actually haul a reasonable amount of stuff! I can't wait for the "D2" trim 😉

Also, both front seats fold flat and the back passenger door windows roll all the way down (without the need of a split window).

If it starts at $45k, it's gonna steal all the Honda Prologue buyers and be the segment leader as well.

I think I found a winner Joe! This may very well be my next BEV with more range and space than my Volvo C40 and for the same price! Great review

I love how all of the seats including the front fold flat for camping.

Really well done review. The camera work was outstanding (Lori?). Really smooth and showed various subtle angles.

I wanted the R1S and came close to getting one but ultimately it was too expensive for me. The R2 is the perfect compromise and I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Great video. When you sat in the R2, did it feel like the seating position was higher than a Tesla Model Y?

Yeah the size is about perfect on that vehicle and it s proportions. I love how they did a nice job integrating the touch scree n in a portrait manner and is neatly integrated into the style of the dashboard.. If it could deliver 350-400 miles of range on dual motors it would be perfect.

I like that they finally moved over to the telsa port for a few things. When it comes to current charging issues with the css Network. Issues include dead chargers, 350kw charging down to 50kw . 50kw is slow depending on the ev. When it comes to this , i think they did a great job with it. Personally mine will be in blue, black or red .

Tesla, be warned!

The buttons on the Steering wheel are really smart, that will be so much easier to use while still being clean with many functions.

Can you get a rear wiper? Does it allow bidirectional charging?

That is the most appealing BEV so far as I'm concerned. Like the size. Well finished. That could entice me to go electric for a second car.

I think adding a mini screen for the AC controls for the back row like the new Model 3, should do wonders. That’s the only improvement I can see the car might need. Everything else is amazing. Still looking at when the R3 going to be out on reservation.

I am really excited about the R2. I have reserved one. I hope they can deliver on the prices as well. I love the R1S but it is way out of my price range. Overall the vehicle looks cool and I am looking forward to possibly buying one in 2026.

I love it. I hope there are 12v outlets in the rear and the centre consoles in addition to what they already have, since I have a 12v fridge, a 12v rice cooker, a 12v slow cooker and a bunch of other 12v appliances that I take camping. Would be awesome if the moon roof could have a motorized blind so you can black out the morning sun when camping inside it. Aside from that, as soon as they make it for the UK/AU markets, I'm buying one!

What about opening the center console

Overall loving Rivian, only critiques on this vehicle are the cup holders, the plastic floors and the giant plastic open bin below the glove box? Just seems a bit cheap and lazy but the seats and the dash configuration all look nice!

I was at the auto show yesterday, and afterwards me and my friend went to that exact location and saw that R2. I really like that design and concept

Great video. All it's missing is CarPlay and physical vent controls and it'd be perfect. The move to digital vent controls is so dumb and unnecessary I wish they'd stop.

Make the second row seating adjustable. I hope the hatch height is adjustable also. I’m 6’5 and need those extra 2-3” to feel comfortable. Would like to see a courtesy light for the frunk.👍

Was planning on upgrading my Polestar 2 to the polestar 4 next year; not anymore, I’ll get the R2 dual motors.

One comment, I'm also 6 ft tall and I noticed the rear tail gate seems to hang a bit low, like I'm going to hit my head frequently. Rivian should consider extending the lift height a few more inches, as much as feasible.

I like it but Im really not a fan of steering wheel controls that serve multiple functions with the same button. When using cruise control seems like itd be dangerous. Im sure it’s fairly intuitive, but I would preferred a more traditional setup

I like the general design and interior. The only thing that stops me from being a buyer is that there is no service center within 150 miles of me. I don’t know how long I’d be without a car if I need a tech to come out to check it out

Great looking vehicle. Love the moving rear glass. This car almost looks like Volvo designed it. I would love having this vehicle. A winner if they can meet the 45k price. I sincerely doubt this car will ship below 60k. Love the haptic feedback scroll wheels.

What is gained by no Apple Car Play on any Rivian model? Cost savings? How much per car?

I love it! I've never owned an EV and wouldn't buy one because the charging infrastructure sucks and is basically non existent in my area of BFE, except Tesla! Superchargers are pretty much everywhere but I don't want a Tesla and won't spend 75k on any vehicle but now that Rivian is adopting the NACS I'm in like Flynn! IF that price sticks, and I hope it does, Rivian R2 will be my first BEV! And, I don't have a home charging option at the moment...

I reserved one. My only concern when i saw the R2 in Miami - is the hatch height - Joe, you are 6'0 and I am 6'2" and you were hunching over when the hatch was open it needs to open higher.

I am on the list for an R2. Looks like a perfect replacement for my 4Runner, and I am ready to make the change to having an EV in my household. Kudos to Rivian for the retracting rear window! Excellent feature, and pretty rare these days. Enormously useful. Other features? I'm hoping there are heated and ventilated seats, and Carplay please. I was happy to hear about some sort of partnership with Apple, as my ONLY negative about Rivian is the lack of CarPlay support. Hopefully that changes by 2026. Can't wait!

Great tour of a great car! Put down a deposit the day it was announced. Will my golf clubs fit in the frunk? Looks like it might be tight.

Reserved mine as soon as I learned it was coming! The biggest thing I'm curious about though is the quality of the sound system...such an audiophile that really does make or break a car for me. Fingers crossed!

RJ and Frank, please provide some RWD trims at launch. I really cannot afford anything more than 45k and I am not waiting for R3. I am a 2021 & 2023 R1T quad owner through my parents (who have an EEAP vehicle as well). I am 23 year old college graduate that is currently employed by Rivian and living at home temporarily. My configuration will be RWD. I understand that the more expensive ones (Dual + Tri) need to be prioritized for profit reasons. But RWD will be easier/quicker to manufacture. Also a lot of the markets that you will be successful in (especially in the beginning) are warm/non snow states. Those regions will be configuring RWD more and if the goal is to get as many in the market as possible, then maybe RWD should also get some prioritization too.

Rivian does an amazing job at the build quality and design !!! I'm still not a bev guy, but Rivian would be my choice R1S, though.

One thin I'd appreciate for future early looks at unreleased vehicles would be if you could state what your hopeful price would be. I know you don't have the information yet of course but knowing what YOU would like the price range to be helps to get an idea of what other cars in this category should be priced at.

I appreciate the reviewer saying how tall he is. I don't know why many reviewers don't add in that information, but us taller people really need to know if we're going to fit in a vehicle.

What about the flashlight? The side window pop out? I know there's no air pump or Bluetooth speaker like R1S. Very Nice SUV.

Great video. Thank you. I have a deposit on one and don't have clear insight on whether it has Apple CarPlay, ventilated seats or a heated steering wheel. Did you happen to notice any of those features being included? I'm making assumptions on front and rear parking sensors as well as some form of blind spot monitoring and self-driving.

As an R1S owner, I placed an order immediately. I LOVE my R1S (pre-order pricing), however, I don't NEED this big of a vehicle. What it will come down to, is towing capabilities, the R1S is the BEST vehicle I have ever driven or owned. Now, Joe you missed a TON of additional features that are STANDARD on the R2.

I reserved one, with great enthusiasm, however, I have one major question... How is the driver's leg room compared to a Tesla Y ? The Y has amazing leg room for this 6'3" stiff senior. Joe was looking a little cramped behind the wheel of the R2. I'm worried.

I think they did great but the R2 should have been on the market yesterday since Rivian needs more affordable models, but I will be pleasantly surprised if when the R2 launches it does actually end up starting around 45k. Also I am surprised Joe went the full review without mentioning R2-D2 once 😁
