On this episode, we're discussing the alleged 7th album curse that has plagued both Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift's seventh eras (but apparently not Beyonce, Rihanna, Mariah or Madonna's). Much of the 7th era conundrum deals with the urgency and transformation an artist does as they continue their career. I think eternal sunshine will have another hit, Ari and her team have the goods but i do agree that the lack of visuals and promo is odd considering how good she has been with it like from my everything to positions, there was a decent chunk of marketing and planning and rollout

It feels like eras are becoming less and less of a thing the past few years, artists drop a single or two, push merch super hard, drop the album, maybe go on tour, maybe drop another single but then that's it. There's no arc anymore, it's all wrapped up in 6 months or so. Do labels just not want to put money in anymore or are artists deciding this isn't worth it to them anymore?

It’s a combination of both, the whole conventional 2 year release schedule is broken by streaming and artists not following the mold but also labels who want to squeeze as much out

it feels like ari was forced to do eternal sunshine… i love ariana grande, i’ve been a fan since before yours truly, but she has a passion for the music she puts out, but i’m not seeing this passion for eternal sunshine. yes, and? was probably made just so she could see if the water was in her favor and she did mention that she predicted her next album was gonna be out in 2027. she is busy and working on wicked, which, good for her, but i think we will look at this era in the future and think “oh she was so not prepared for eternal sunshine”. im hyped, but also scared for my diva… i also have been waiting for her comeback for a while and i really want more and more from her. i hope she takes her time for the album after eternal sunshine

Apparently she’s doing all the promotion after the album releases with Apple Music interview, live performance on SNL, and etc. So I could possibly see it rising later after debut, my only question is why do all the promo after the album releases?

@@EljohnMacaranasi do get it tho…it’s much more for the fans than anything else. it was born as a therapeutic thing for her, non intended to be an album before wicked. with so many leaks and people wanting to know about the scandal, i think it’s wise to release the song that needed to come first (yes and) and then do the promo and talk about it after it’s released so that it’s more likely that we’ll hear it as a concept. it seems to be a very personal, creative project mainly for fans too and it is her falling back in love with making music, i understand why the promo is how it is and not like dangerous woman era. ❤️‍🩹

Talking to my friends (also huge Ariana fans) who work in retail and they all dread Yes and now because it plays to much. So I think it’s just that most people who grew up as arinators or who got into Ariana via sweetener and thank you next may be overplayed for them now

Oh my god, I like Yes and? but cannot imagine hearing it everyday at my job 😭 and agreed that TU,N and some sweetener tracks still play on the radio a bunch, Positions being a more lowkey effort even tho 34 35 was a big radio smash and everywhere was actually a blessing

I am impressed that Fergie could sing through cartwheels, but I'm even more impressed that she did cartwheels in tight leather pants! Like dang, girl! You go! 😃 In all seriousness, I hope she does more music, but less in the dance/pop style and more adult contemporary. Maybe even some nice piano ballads where she can really show off her voice. I know she's had some missteps with live performances over the years, but if you ever doubt her abilities, go back and listen to that first Wild Orchid album. Particularly the song "At Night I Pray". I mean, THE PIPES! 👍👍👍👍 Anyway, loving the podcast. Keep it up!

i'm a swiftie and i find lover such an interesting juncture in taylor's career, in 2019 when it came out, i wasn't even on stan twitter yet i felt the heat here on youtube, the reactors were going IN on her with ME! and yntcd, i mean understandable. yntcd is redeeming itself but ME! is beyond repair, it's just a bad song. i'm so sure when taylor made ME! she thought she'll get a shake it off 2.0 but it back fired. the 2 #2's and then lover (song) barely hitting #10, oh we were in trenches 😭😭 i feel like coz of taylor's poor single choices the gp gave up on the album, they didn't give it a fair chance but as time went on, the gp started waking up to its brilliance and the eras tour was a perfect boost to propel it even further, like it's collecting weeks in the top 10 of billboard 200 left and right, cruel summer has already spent like 32 weeks in the top 10 of the billboard hot 100, collectively lover has like 9.4b streams, this is CRAZY. safe to say, slowly but surely taylor broke that curse but can't say the same for a certain ponytail lmao

Oh agreed on all levels, I was a Lover critic but also a truther once the record came out in full (Archer brought me back) but yeah the GP finally coming around because of Cruel Summer is just proof that was a lot of commercial mistakes and perception issues over the actual quality of the record, I adore Ari but she doesn’t have the cultural or critical cache to do a thing like this, I’m just worried we get an amazing record that gets buried by a homewrecking scandal and rushed promo to capitalize off the Wicked movie

@@EljohnMacaranas agreed, to know that taylor was eventually going to make cruel summer a single but the pandemic happened and she couldn't, makes so much sense. i completely agree ariana doesn't have the hold musically imo to pull off something like taylor did with lover. ariana's discography is kind of aging like milk. thank u, next not seeing billboard 200 for months on end while being her peak era is so dangerous. with this new album, i hope she wraps it properly in a concept of what she says it is coz if yes, and? is any indication, i'm yelling timber 😭

When I look back to when this album was released, I remember thinking Lover was going to be my least favorite album of Taylor’s. But now I put it on top five. because when I realize the songs on the album like Afterglow, Miss Americana and the heartbreak, cruel summer, paper rings, daylight, London boy, and it’s nice to have a friend. And I think, “why did i dislike this album back in 2019.” It’s pretty good.

in the lover breakdown video i mentioned that lover was what made me a swiftie because of her songwriting capabilities in songs like dbatc, cornelia street and the archer which were so different from the pop 'shake it off' type songs i was used to from taylor. i really think lover would've performed better if the public had more time with it. we would've had loverfest and cruel summer as a single if things had gone differently. not to mention folklore/evermore were likely the furthest things from her mind when in the lover era, pre-pandemic. she was robbed lowkey, happy to see people revisiting lover with the eras tour though

i really hope that the album doesn’t flop after seeing how “yes, and?” is performing… the song has grown a lot on me and i really like it now but i agree that it doesn’t feel like a lead single. something feels different/off about this era, i was soooo excited for all of her past releases, but for this one it doesn’t feel the same. don’t get me wrong i love ari, always have and always will but i fear the homewrecking allegations and rumors have really damaged her reputation and will affect the album performance (i feel like it’s already affected the performance of yes, and?)

I think the homewrecking stuff definitely dampens the era but also the music isn’t good enough to overcome the controversy. There’s definitely smatterings of misogyny too but it’s def a quality issue!

Great video!! Would you be open to discuss Nelly Furtado's "Loose" for the Vintage Record Review? Man, that was one of the best pop eras of the 2000s. Even to this day, I think that record has aged gracefully, thanks to Timbaland's production carefully mixing pop and rnb. There are some songs I'd take out but still it's a great pop album. It's also interesting to consider because a lot of critics and people thought she sold out after starting out as a more folk instead of what she said of the album at the time: a true artistic evolution, one after she reached motherhood. I'd like to hear your thoughts about it.

I also think that her (Ariana ) releasing an album right when we are in the midst of an upcoming Taylor AND Beyoncé album was incredibly foolish. Of course she didn’t know that they’d would release because she announced it first . But dang , that whole debacle is not gonna help the situation (aka the longevity of this album” ) Side note I know Taylor and Ariana are on the same label. I wish she would’ve gotten a heads up from label execs that Taylor would release cause sheesh . This is just all TOO MESSY

Honestly I think the general public is just completely turned off from her (Ariana) . And the song “yes and” did not help. I feel like it it only made people angrier cause they were like “the audacity of of her being like “yes I did those things AND”” . I speak with my mutuals who aren’t really into Stan culture and I ask them what they think about Ariana and her new album coming out and they keep saying things along the lines of that ‘they don’t really want to listen to her because the feel like she’s a terrible person. ‘ Which … understandable. Actions do have consequences and maybe this is the time where Ariana will finally learn that you can’t just take other people’s things just b/c you want it . But yeah , it’s a shame her personal behavior has overshadowed and soured the release of this album. A damn shame .

I think the album Eternal Sunshine will sell just as much as Postions did . But this time the low sales will be attributed to her terrible image at the moment & not necessarily because of the “lack of promotion”. Even though this does play a role this time around .. I think the main factor will be the image . Because as an artist especially a POP ARTIST, image is everything ! I mean look at how many people turned on Katy just because she did something as simple as cutting her hair. The General public truly are fickle .

Yeah this 7th album curse thing is pretty stupid. I first learned this through some Twitter thread and the author included Mariah's "Glitter" and Aguilera's "Lotus" for some reason 💀 Anyway, I'd like to add another vintage album suggestion to the Robyn one I made a week ago That being "Music" by Madonna which was my favorite project of hers when I first heard it I like to call it her "Bjork album" as I feel similar manic energy from as I do from Bjork's 90s releases if that makes any sense adfjkdfkjdfj

Also idk how Ariana is gonna be at promoting this album cause I feel like she’s still in “hiding” because of the whole Ethan backlash situation. I hope she gets a grip and gets out there and does the the appearances & Radio (besides SNL and doing posts on Instagram) Cause being hidden will NOT help with the longevity of the album. Plus Taylor and Beyoncé are right on the horizon , this is all just terribly terribly planned .

@@EljohnMacaranas I think people just had high expectations at the time. Sure it didn’t have the success as Ariana and Billie’s albums at the time. But it wasn’t a flop, it wasn’t a curse. Stan Twitter loves to exaggerate how bad an era is if it isn’t Teenage Dream success or her own era 1989. It did really good, it just needed more room to breathe. It was an album that did better after its core promotional run.
