The 996-generation Porsche 911 is quickly gaining cult status, with the GT3 or GT3 RS seen as the pinnacle of the era. However, could this CSR EVO from RPM Technik usurp the GT3 as the ultimate Porsche 996?
RPM Technik invited me to take the car for a couple of days while my own "Little Irish' 996 was in for a major service. I decided to take the CSR EVO on an epic road trip from the City of London to the remote roads of Snowdonia, Wales, in the ultimate test of the CSR EVO's all-round capabilities. Here, I deliver my assessment of the Merlin purple Carrera 2, equipped with 350hp, a comprehensive chassis overhaul, and a 45kg weight saving. Is a CSR EVO better than a Porsche GT3?

I have a 'standard' RPM 996 CSR, but with a 3.7 Hartech engine. Not quite as powerful (only 330bhp) but a lot more torque. Cracking cars!

Sounds like a great 996 but no way would I spend GT3 money for it. GT3 will hold its value maybe even appreciate. Plus a rebuilt M96 may be nice but it’s not better than a 380 hp Mezger.

I'm not sure how long you have been vlogging as 'That Nine Eleven Guy' but I am sure your subscriber count and views will grow. Your delivery, content, pacing and footage is excellent. I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of your videos. Well done! And keeping the timing of most of your vids to 9:11 is very clever.....

Nice review Lee. However I would take issue with your suggestion that you feel the CSR is better than a GT3. Just can't see that. And when you put money into the equation then it all goes out the window. I run a Manthey 996.2 GT3 with a few choice mods including a 410hp upgrade. I can tell Lee that car is a killer on the track and just so satisfying to drive to. And the whole thing cost just over 60k. I'm pretty sure the CSR wouldn't see which way the GT3 went ! Feel free to check out some of my vids on track. And the sound...just glorious!

Great video Lee, I love the CSR concept but 80K on top of a donor car isn't 996 GT3 money it's 997.2 or 991.1 GT3 money! Saying that i am slowly upgrading my 997.1 X51 with the CSR as inspiration, hoping that by upgrading items as needed with my indi it will give a decent saving from doing the package as a whole

I totally support the Porsche aftermarket. Your testing verifies the rewards. With no after market we would be told our older Porsches especially water cooled were worthless and we should be grateful for Stock main dealer servicing. And told at trade/part exchange time our cars were "worth nothing" a dealership training exercise, even with factory limited run air cooled light weights. Hats off to RPM tech for their development work.

Lovely car, but megabucks. You'd have to be a huge 996 fan and rich to go there. Great video!

There try finding a naturally aspirated Porsche 911 with manual shift and it will cost a fortune. Not all CSR cars are mega bucks and they are also reconditioned similar to brand new.

Lee, I liked this video and I’m enjoying your content but I really wanted you to go into detail to qualify your opinion as to why you prefer a CSR over a GT3. Does it drive better? Does it ride better? Does it sound better? Does it feel better? Something!

Yasir Qureshi yeah I highly doubt that.
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback, Yasir. I had to leave so much content on the cutting-room floor, I should really have done a two-parter! In short, the CSR revs as strongly as a 996 GT3 (yes its redline is lower but it's still an occasion to hit it like in the GT3), throttle response and power delivery is sensational, on par if not better than the factory GT car. The CSR chassis is, without a doubt, superior to the GT3 - this is a huge win for the CSR. Damping in particular is better: it has more adjustability so can be supple when you need it to be (GT3 can be very harsh on UK roads) and, when stiffened, simply rides the bumps better. That CSR EVO is also the best-sounding 996 I've ever heard so yes, it is superior to the GT3 here too. I'd honestly have one over a factory GT3.

I believe you when you say the chassis is better than GT3. That’s because KW3 is state of the art and not from 2003. Still I would never exchange my 996.2 GT3 Clubsport to this. Nothing beats a Mezger 😎
@ryanconstable5912
@ryanconstable5912 4 года назад
Cool car but you miss out on dry sump, proper GT suspension geometry, vastly superior 350mm 6 pot brakes (much better thermal capacity and stopping power), beefier G96 gearbox, Mezger reliability, etc. Awesome car but for realistically 100k, you can have an immensely sorted 996 GT3 that will run a ringer around the CSR. Just my two cents, coming from someone who has built a 996 turbo well past GT2 or GT3 spec for far less, using OE parts nonetheless.

RPM do good work but the same could be achieved for under 50k, starting with a 15k base car. Also not sure the car in the video is going to pass it's next MOT with no airbag.
@racekar80

The elephant in the room is the M96 motor verses the GT3 Metsger motor which has no IMS issues. I would never spend that kind of money for a motor that will always be on borrowed time. I know from experience.

Any thought of using the 5 point belts when you're thrashing on the road? It seems a waste to have them and not make use of them to hold you more firmly into the seat.
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 4 года назад
I think harnesses are for the track, belts for the road. The seats gave enough support and held me in place while also having to jump out every 5 mins to move cameras etc.

Hi Lee, does this CSR’s steering/front axle feel really light when you get above 130km/h? I have a 2002 996 C2 and it’s front end feels light when you get over that 130-140km/h going through the turns. It’s a little bit spooky at times as I’ve never driven a car that feels that. What are your thoughts on dialing that out? Thanks.

Basic pack cost around 35k + car. In my case ints full customize 996, everything is new and very good for daily. It still less than gt3 and its new.

This reminds me of HPA motorsports, and similar companies. What they offer is incredible, but just can't justify that price. Would rather spend the money on a GT3.

@Apexjuha
@Apexjuha 4 года назад
S M Wow! Where can you get a 996 GT3 RS below 100 000? Nowhere! It is typically a 250 000 car. Probably the most wanted GT3 RS.
@SpencerF6
@SpencerF6 4 года назад
@@Apexjuha www.ashgood.co.uk The market doesn't like miles on these cars but give it time and it cares less. 70k miles really isn't a lot to me. 2.7RS prices don't tend to care about miles, so give it time and this will be less of an issue on a 996rs. 😊
@Apexjuha
@Apexjuha 4 года назад
S M Wow! Im seriously considering booking a flight. That price is really good. 74 000 miles is like 120 000 km - ok it is quite a lot but Mezgers can be rebuilt to high quality ... not cheap to build though. But yes, you were right. Most of these 996 GT3 RS have been much more expensive.
@SpencerF6
@SpencerF6 4 года назад
@@Apexjuha Yeah, I was surprised at the price too. The market has settled down a bit with regards to 996 GT3s. The next cheapest RS I cam see is £129k so not too far off.
