Two observations: 1. Blaming obesity on fried chicken is like blaming homicide on Winchester rifles. 2. What would the homicide rate look like if abortion statistics were counted? Keep up the good work, Jon!
@earlofbroadst
@earlofbroadst 3 года назад
He's not blaming fried chicken. He's saying that in the Bible Belt there's a cultural tradition of eating fried foods. People choose to eat a lot more fried stuff. We fry our vegetables, for crying out loud! (Not all of them, but fried okra is huge in the South).
@dws2313
@dws2313 3 года назад
@@earlofbroadst Yes, but you illustrate my point quite well. To claim that fried foods cause obesity is to enter into a different debate. (I contend that obesity is not caused by fried foods, but that is beside the point.) The debate here is to establish or deny a causal relationship between obesity and Bible-believers. It is not to prove the link between fried foods and weight gain. Permit me one example of a non-causal correlation. If we claim that obesity is lower among non-Bible believers, can we cite pro-abortion as its cause?

@@dws2313 Just a note on medical data: Generally, anything fried in vegetable oil will be bad for your waistline. Some oils, however, like avocado oil or coconut oil, are fairly safe, though fried food is still worse than, say, grilled food due purely to carb count.

Why is Maryland included in the Bible Belt? I was born and raised in the deep South and no one considers them a part of the "Bible Belt" or the South. Leaving them off would probably increase it over 40%. Lifeway is SO out of touch with their constituents.

If this is the Lizzie that I'm thinking of, she had a few conversations with Jeff Durbin on Apologia Radio. She's an atheist and came across as extremely ignorant as well as mostly unintelligible. From the little that was revealed, she had a rough, abusive upbringing which explains much of her behavior. Nevertheless, she could not bring any sound arguments to the table to support her views other than how badly she feels religion affects society. Pastor Jeff did his best to witness to her, and I believe is still in private conversations with her as well.

A lot of tobacco was grown in the south up until my generation (Gen X), and many ppl formerly worked in this farm industry (as I did). I had nicotine in my system via priming tobacco, heisting (pronounced as heisting but means hoisting) tobacco, stripping tobacco etc. long before I actually started smoking cigarettes. Edit to add… high traffic interstates highways draw many ppl with criminal intent, especially drugs, even from other states and other countries. Interstate 40, 85, and 95 are heavily trafficked in this way.

Having grown up an evangelical in Colorado, it seems there is an unhealthy side of evangelical culture even here. When my pastor growing up preached on the issue of diet, he took a "middle road" approach saying that being healthy and disciplined in that regard could glorify God, but also that enjoying food now and being happy to get to heaven sooner would glorify God; it would show a lack of fear of death. I see the culture of potlucks and donuts on Sunday morning as well, not that it's inherently wrong. My point is, I don't think evangelicals think they're hypocrites about living a gluttonous lifestyle that leads to obesity - they just don't even think it's a sin in the first place. One of my close friends told me straight up, "gluttony isn't a sin, that's a catholic thing." I refuted him with the proverb about finding honey and eating only enough. Maybe we think we're "too spiritual" to care about such worldly concerns, but is this a problem that requires more of our attention?
@cfrost87

Gluttony is a lack of self-control, so there is an argument for it being sinful.

Bible verses against obesity? Obesity a sin? Reference, please. Gluttony is a sin, but obesity doesn't necessarily result from gluttony. And it's the "infant death belt" only if you don't count the babies murdered before they were born.
@robertlewis6915

I think Proverbs would have a number of verses regarding prudence and gluttony (the usual reason for obesity), though I don't know what verses Harris is referring to for certain.
@danbrown586
@danbrown586 3 года назад
@@robertlewis6915 Yes, as I said, gluttony is a sin--but gluttony isn't simply "eating more than is necessary to maintain your ideal weight (however that may be determined)." When you couple that with the fact that "obesity" is arbitrarily defined as a certain BMI range (and BMI takes no account of fitness, muscle vs. fat, etc.), I think it'd be quite the uphill exegetical struggle to show from scripture that what we, in the US today, call obesity is a sin. Particularly when the literal reading of Proverbs 11:25 is that the generous person will be "made fat," which certainly sounds like a good thing in the context of that verse.
@robertlewis6915
@robertlewis6915 3 года назад
@@danbrown586 I'm assuming obesity to mean 'fat to the point of unhealthiness', which gluttony is the most common reason for, as I'm sure you'd agree. Having some padding was considered a sign of prosperity in the pre- modern world as it meant you could afford enough to built up reserves. This wouldn't refer to dangerous or unhealthy obesity, merely normal human levels of body fat (which are perfectly healthy).

I am from Alabama and we use to attend the Church of God. We did not like how the church was changing and so we now have church in our homes. We have Bible Study and we even sing gospel songs and play musical instruments such as the piano and the drums. We all get together our family and have dinner on Sunday. We have witnessed the breaking down of the nuclear families all across our state. We have family members that have divorced have fallen into drug abuse and alcoholism. We even have a family member that killed a sheriff that was being a tyrant and it was in self defense but they were both wrong and sadly we have lost our way down here and we are trying so hard to try and bring people back to the Lord and it’s really hard when society is constantly pushing that of what is wrong as being right and right as being wrong. I will say that there is a movement right now that has people wanting and seeking the truth. If there ever was a time for our churches to get out from behind their walls and have revivals they will do more for the lost than they have over the past several decades. When I was a child I would see tent revivals everywhere and I truly loved going to them. They really made the community brighter and happier. People was talking more to their neighbors and were such a delight to see smiling faces. The drugs has been flowing in and it’s hurting every family and I almost want to say it’s being done on purpose cause it use to be unheard of and now it’s everywhere. It’s hard to keep your children from falling prey to the devils playgrounds cause it’s coming at us from all sides. I myself fell prey to them and I thank my lucky stars that my father and mother raised up in Christianity cause it’s true about us that gets lost will find themselves and come back to the Lord. I’m prime example of this. So my take is that without evil there would be no good and without good there is no evil.

I live in California and had quite a few opportunities to travel around the South during the past year or so, and it was awesome! Lots of happy, smiling faces everywhere, talking, greeting and laughing, kind and pleasant manners, etc. Simply, they were enjoying their life and looked satisfied. Not so in California, especially during the past year. It seems that so many southerners are just happy in the places where they stand, unlike those societal leaders who only look at numbers.

41:00 There are parts of the country where common-law marriage is still valid--it was in South Carolina in 2009, though I understand they've since rescinded it. There are a few other states where it's legal as well. In those places, it would be possible to have a valid, legally binding marriage without a license, and possibly without the state (or whoever is the source for the statistics) knowing about it.

Instead of wasting its time trying to "redeem the city" or whatever that means, the North American Mission Board (NAMB) could focus its efforts trying to reach places like WV and Southern Ohio. There are a lot of rural areas in the South and Midwest that are unreached and could use solid churches. Of course given NAMB's current state, it might be best for them to stay away from those areas for the time being.

Everyone who thinks or feels God doesn't care, is indifferent and or mean etc …. Why is the world as it is, evil everywhere… where is God and His faithfulness… God does judge sin which is evil and if people don't stop sinning they will die for that disobedience,that sin. When God said if you take from that tree you will die He was saying if you disobey, you sin, I will punish that sin because God does punish it, sickness, demons and death. And if you keep sinning I will punish you to the point of death, is that punishment. Sickness is a consequence of sin and it is a judgement God makes upon the people for their sin. All sickness takes its toll on the body and will result in death unless you stop sinning and that brings a reward from God for the righteous decision to stop sinning that brought that illness. Throughout scripture God tells us these things. God does love and there is mercy in His punishment too. He chastises those He loves. His wrath doesn't mean He doesn't love, it doesn't mean there is no mercy, it means He puts His law first and He obeys it first. He punished sin and then punishes sin and so forth and if someone doesn't stop sinning or sins more then that judgment is death just as He said, sin is death. Scripture says we are all responsible for working out our salvation with fear and trembling. Seek scripture, learn who He is and what He said to obey and do it. if you obey Him you live in blessings just like Deuteronomy 28 says and it also says disobedience is curses, that's sickness, demons possibly and again to continue in sin results in death. God told all the details, and paid for us to get out of sin and how we should live and when people don't live righteous then the world looks like it did in the days of Noah, violence, drunkenness and such lovers of self, pleasure and all sin and life apart from God, life in disobedience to God. Why should He bless sin? He punishes it then punishes sin more if someone keeps sinning. Is it tough people die from that choice they make, their sin and lack of seeking God to obey what He said, yes it hurts. How do you think God feels, He loved the world so much He gave His only begotten son and Yeshua died in agony for us to be out of that sin, taking God's wrath upon Himself so how do I think He feels, grieved so grieved but I know from scripture He always obeys what His word says, He never changes and that includes every word He said. Now Yeshua took God's wrath upon Himself for our sin Isaiah 53. We get peace with God and can come before Him to be heard and we get to be cleansed from our iniquities, sin. Just like the lamb sacrifices in the old testament Jesus was that for us a peace offering and forgiveness offering. We get freedom from that sinful past, from that sin and we get our healings because His stripes healed us from the consequences of sin. He gave us a way out. A way to start again out of that wrath. How loving is that God gave us His son who took God's wrath for us out of love. How loving just how loving is our God who made a way for us to be out of that wrath? Wrath we deserved by our sin and continued sin. But God so loved the world He gave us Yeshua. Yeshua gave His life to rise to life for us to give us new life. A new creation to begin again a new life, having been born again. Having received forgiveness for sin and a pardon from God's wrath, that very wrath you talk about. But God gave us a way out of His wrath when Yeshua our lamb paid for our sin. Again how loving is that our way out of God's wrath. Our new life. Our second chance to live rightly before our Holy righteous God our being born again to live right because God planned for us to not all receive His wrath yet His son for everyone, one for everyone and a way out, pardoned and free to live life righteous whole healed delivered, how loving oh so very loving that is. All that is in scripture too. Seek and find, learn who He is and obey and see more of it. Mark 4:24 the more you obey God the more He reveals to you, it means that. Matthew 6:33 live it daily and understand who He is and just how loving He always is and honestly how loved you are will be seen felt and KNOWN too. 💕 May you come to understand Him all your days seeking and finding and growing in the knowledge of God in Yeshua's name. 🙏

I've seen similar comparisons to the meme Jon is discussing in this video. The one that sticks out in my mind states, without evidence, that there are as many strip clubs as there are churches in Dallas, TX. This is all that is stated, and so the assumption they want you to make is that Dallas is just full of Christians who go to strip clubs, or something like that. Again, the best advice is to force someone to prove their point with evidence if they are making a non-sensical argument like this where the goal is clearly to tear down Bible-believing Christians, churches, etc.
