Is the BMW M2 worth the EXTRA £10,000+ over an M140i?

As much as I love the M2 I don't think I could justify paying the extra £10,000+ for one now I own an M-lite. Saying that, it's a massive financial leap jumping from an M140i to an M2 Competition so I totally understand why a lot of M-Lite owners make the move to an OG M2

I moved from a 3 door zf m140 to a og m2 6mt and I absolutely love it. I did have them both for a week or so while I was waiting on the sale of the m140i and drove them back to back plenty of times. My 140 had birds b1 suspension, all the m3 control arms,rear subframe bushes and lsd full geo ect, and still couldn’t touch the stock m2 in regards to handling, steering response and the that direct feel from the rear end that gives so much more confidence to drift and take corners at speed. In the look’s department not once did I have anyone comment on the 140, even being 6years old the m2 still has people asking what it is and saying how good it looks or sounds. I personally think the og M2 s definitely the sweet spot in the group, it’s the best sounding and lightest m2, and best looking to my eye. Since owing it I’ve fitted the m2C seats and wing mirrors, 763m wheels and full Mpeformance carbon kit, litchfield AST suspension kit with front camber hubs, cs steering,dsc and diff software, Stage 2+ flex fuel and now it’s quite simply the perfect M2

I’ve owned an M240i and now have the OG M2. IMO there 100% £10,000 difference in the ride and experience. Driving the M240i gets dramatic when you’re driving it hard - M2 is dramatic from the second you get in it. If you have the money don’t shirt change yourself and go for the M2 (or M2 Comp)

Got myself a manual m2c. Only ever drove the 240, but the chassi difference alone is worth it. Not to mention the looks.

Good video, my 140 will be 2 years old in August [one of the last factory orders} and as much as I love it I am now set on getting an M2C as I would like to experience how good they allegedly are. Seems to be a natural transition for many 140 owners. Only seen one critical M2c review on RU-vid so hopefully I won't be disappointed. Keep up the excellent content.

Great vids mate. Just sold my 2018 M2 and bought a 140, with a stage 2 map on it. Needed the cash back. Have to say I prefer the 140 as it’s a better everyday car in eco and when I want to have some fun, can crank it up in sport, chuckle at the noise the Remus makes and know that I’d leave the M2 fir dust (in a straight line). @@lookship I can recommend an LSD on your 140 - had mine done in October. It’s really good. Wet traction out of junctions is easily better than FWDs. I can’t believe I’ve owned 4 other RWDs without LSDs. Signed - LSD fanboy....

Ps I’ve had modded cars for ever (getting on a bit now) including Nissan Gtr, corvette, m3, golf r, cosworth, supra etc….. what I really liked here was you were confident and honest enough not to make a video simply justifying your decision but were open and fair.. Lots of RU-vidrs and comments aren’t real they’re just justification of decisions. Say it like it is. Respect. The biggest thing is fun. My fav car from all I’ve had…. A Renault 5 gt raider stage e. Nothing to do with bigger bhp is better and numbers, all about smiles per mile. What makes you happiest….

I’ve had my 140i for neater years now and it does everything I need to to do without costing obscene amounts to run. I do keep hankering after an M2 though, particularly the OG which would correct two of my issues with the 140i; looks and noise. I don’t really want anything faster than my 140i which is more than capable of getting me in trouble with the boys in blue. The improvements in handling would be nice too. You’re also less likely the to take such a bath financially too; the early M2’s are holding their money well and just going off BMW’s finance figures are likely to continue to do so because they’re cheaper than an equivalent aged / priced M4. I don’t like the noise the S55 makes plus it adds 55kg to an already porky car. The nicer seats to lift the interior though but I’m not sure it’s worth the current premium over the OG.

Depends where you live. Outside of the UK, the M2C comes with standard M seats and bigger brakes (if not standard, an option). Out of the EU as well, there are no particulate filters and therefore the S55 sounds more glorious. The M2C slaughters an OG M2 at the top end. If money is an issue, an OG is a smart buy but not the full or real M car.

Agreed, I switched from my M4 Comp to my OG M2, the M2 Comp and CS have the same hub issues as the M3/M4 and after having my M4 spin it's hub twice needing a engine replacement, I intentionally went for the OG M2 because it doesn't have the hub issue unless one tunes it up to +600bhp,.. I spent around £2k for a stage 2, GTS Flash and it has no trouble matching M2 Comps and CSs on power/speed and the only real thing I can knock it on in comparison with the Comp & CS is they have better looking seats and (I think..?) the carbon fibre body kits n bits are standard, where I had to purchase my carbon kit separately. I also fitted a set of the Forged CS Alloys (In black), because they look great, save a bit of weight and I got a really good deal on them. Still got lots of stuff planned (all self indulgence!), and it's not made me regret spending the extra £10+k on a Comp or CS, and not having that potential engine killing hub issue constantly lurking in my mind is a godsend! My wife owns a 2019 M140i SE which was as fast as my stock M2 in a straight line, but got embarrassed through the bends... I were going to tune it up instead of getting the M2 but, after speaking with someone who had spent £7k sorting the handling out, he said it still couldn't hold a candle to the M2 on track, so I just gave it the Motec stance and power kit, and it's a better cruiser for long distance travelling than the M2, but I'm looking at some better Coilovers for the M2 to rectify that. OG M2 all the way! In my opinion at least.

Good video mate. I had a tuned m140 for years and swapped in to an m2 comp last year. I can safely say, hands down best thing I could have done. It is everything I wanted the 140 to be. It's quick, it looks great, and when you drive it hard it rewards and eggs you to drive harder. That is the main character the 140 lacked. But value for money 140 is unbeatable! Now just need to make the m2c a little louder, 👀 and maybe a little quicker at the same time.

Great comparison video...I had a 135i and loved it to death.....but the M4 is just another league.....it feels tighter and more planted....so worth the extra ..... I wish we could get the 140i hatchback here...but...murica.

Honestly mate love your vids I’m almost certainly getting an M140i in July and your vids played a huge part on that. I’ve subscribed since you definitely deserve a lot more views and subs than some.. ‘other’ M140i vids in a certain blue… Maybe a video suggestion of what to look out for when buying an M140i? That’ll be really useful!

Stick with the M140i pal it’s a cracking motor I love mine. And that’s coming from someone who traded in a 2014 RS4. My missus got a family sized car and I work overseas so only do 4.5k miles a year and I just couldn’t justify all that expense on a car that is in storage 6 months of the year. The M140i is much more fun to drive I love it. The only car I would change it for is the M4 comp but again can’t justify the expense

I choose the OG M2 over the 140. More special, more of a visceral experience, and looks are in a different league, IMO. For a daily to drive I can see the pros of the 140, but it’s just not special enough, again IMO. Also ZF box is a bit numb, DCT makes me not miss a manual.

XHP3 gearbox map for the ZF8 is quite cheap, and makes it less annoying in comfort, and savage in sport+.

Thing is now the m2 comp is like 34k on auto trader with very low mileage. Its an absolute steal! I'm thinking after my m140 it's gonna be the m2 comp. Great video

M2C is worth the difference, especially if you plan on modding your M lite. I was in that same boat. The man maths works though, even if financing. M240 around £400 monthly, M2C around £600 (all spec-dependant). That’s a difference of £200 per month over a 47+1 finance agreement £200x47=£9400. M240 GFV around £15k, M2C around £25k. With demand for the M2C as it is and based on OG values after 4 years, the comp will be worth around £35k unless something goes drastically wrong, meaning you get your £10k out at the back end. Boom!

Great video and pretty much my dilemma last year... although my workings out it was £20K difference... bought my M140i brand new for £34k - M2Comp was £54K.... long story short - i bought the M2 Comp but at the back of my head was always the is it worth £20K extra... its a better car no doubt - in the end i cancelled my order and kept the M140i and spent some of the money i had saved making some of the changes to bring it "closer" to the M2 = LSD, powerflex bushes, bilstein suspension, M4 control arms, braces and currently en route OZ Racing wheels ( all to sort the handling out ). Throw in the pureturbo800 thats going on in May and i think im probably half that money saved back in.... but... the mlite will be a very sorted car - with more than enough power to see of most things on the road. Again not an M2 ( absolutely brilliant car ) but just wasnt worth it for me. Bearing in mind you know pretty much most people will still add more stuff taking that £54K purchase price higher too.

The problem is if your dumping 10k worth of mods on the m140i you ain’t getting that back. So your m140 is now the price of the comp but will sell for half the value the m2 would in 2 years time. To me it would make more sense to get the proper m car surely ? At least it looks the part too!

Hi quality video. Videos like this help me to buy my own m135i. Same color of yours. But 5 door because I have 2 children. My car is a N55 with EWG and for me is enough performance. Maybe it will have a stge 2 tune and reach to the 400Hp. But not yet jajaja

M140i is great bang for buck in general but if your like me and don't earn a fortune it's a dream come true. Had my 2018 shadow edition (stock) for 3 years and I still love every second of driving it. I definitely would not mind an M2 but I'm more than satisfied with what I have.

I would argue about M2 sounding better, S55 in M2, M3, M4 could be louder but it sounds awful, noting but screaming and pop and bangs. B58 on the other side has a nice low-frequency growling, combined with a rev induction noise - love it. You also didn't mention a better torque curve and improved reliability. So, obviously, I would like to try a real M on, but it does not seem like a no-brainer really owning it.

Nice video review, but wrong reason about the S55 in the M2C/CS: the N55 couldn't meet new emission standards so, by passing the B58, BMW also managed to make the M2 a real M car with an S engine.

I think that’s a fair assessment. From a personal point of view, I went to test drive an M2 with the N55 and even though it was a dream to be driving it, it didn’t really do much for me....because I already owned an M14Oi. I did however find that it was much better planted on the road and sounded bitchin. Had I drove the Competition with the new engine - then maybe that’s when I’d say ... I NEED THIS over the M140i. Thanks for the comparison.

In Australia an M2 comp was $110,000 newMy M140 was $60,000 new. I spent $2600 on dorch stage 2 hfpf, $2700 on pure turbos 800, $500 on the decat downpipe , $300 on plugs and panel filter,, $1000 on the gearbox and engine tune, $500 on springs so far ($7600) . Although I love the M2 comp, the M140 is a lot of bang for your buck and a fun car to drive with over 530 hp and the practicality of 5 doors. She is a little monster 👺.

The M140i has a lot of potential and it was a good bargain in Oz, but don't fool yourself that you have one that is better or matches an M2C. At best, you'll be close to a stock OG M2 (wanted F20, went F87).

@@nessuno5403 I have driven the M2 and the M2c. Also I owned an M4 for 2 years (until my situation changed), along with many other cars,, I am over 50years old. You are correct in saying that the M2c being a proper m car would in standard form be faster. Especially around a track. No argument from me. I needed more doors and mostly take the dogs to the beach plus live in a busy city so after testing a golf R, focus RS and loving more cylinders I bought the M140 as a cheaper runaround. With the mods I have done to the little 140 it is faster than a unmodded M2c in a straight line. Fact. Taking nothing from the M2 c, is a great car but being a 2 door, $110000 the little 140 is a bargain and though not a track oriented car is a motorway stormer. For what is is at least.

@@gazza1wa623 the M140i was/is a special unicorn and, in terms of practicality, the best choice compared to an M240i. But again, no dynamic or performance match to a stock M2C, sorry (I've tracked them and a friend even sold his heavily modified, rear widetrack M140i, for a Supra).

@@nessuno5403 like I said. The m140 is no track car. Even with suspension and bracing mods. But a standard M2 comp is 420 hp , runs the quarter in early 12s. 100-200 kph in around 9 secs give or take. They weigh about the same as my M4 which is 1650 kgs give or take. That’s all standard,, no mods. My M140 is around 530 hp on pump gas. Runs the quarter in early to mid 11s ( traction is a nightmare with ps4s) 100-200 in late 6s and weighs 1575kgs. Remember, this is not a standard car or a stage 2. It has pure turbos 800 and a dorch stage 2 capable of running ethanol along with other supporting mods.. My M4 was stage 2. The M140 is a wobbly little thing compared to my M4 but is a lot of fun. If you are in Brisbane Oz I’m happy to meet/prove.

Now in 2024 I'm weighing up whether to go for an M240i or an LCI OG M2. I had an M135i for a few years so I refuse to get a car with less equipment than that had (pro nav, HK, reverse camera etc) which actually makes the right M240i really hard to find! The actual price difference now is £5k-£7k but the M2 has most of the equipment I want as standard, wouldn't need handling mods and has THOSE looks. The sensible part of my brain says the M240i, it's good enough and a lot more economical...yet I still find myself browsing the M2s on Autotrader every day...

You need to upgrade everything on the m240i to make it handle as well as an m2, arms, bushes, suspension, wider wheels, LSD, spacers to try and match the width etc. might aswell buy the m2 as the m140i won’t hold the value like the m2 so your losing all that money your spending on it.

I have an OG M2, and sometimes I think did I make a mistake, mainly because of the N55 engine. However the 2 series looks gorgeous with the flared arches, sounds incredible with the quad exhaust and has diff and the M badge The pose factor is nearly worth the extra, realistically the N55 performance is more than enough on the roads. I’m happy with my choice over an m light, but the M2 comp is the one if you can afford it imho.

Somewhat agree alright, as a OG M2 owner myself, still prefer the sound of the N55, affordability, ample power, however I think the comp upgrades more then justify the price differential...S55, proper M seats, M mirrors, improved suspension etc...

N55 sounds so much better than the comp. The comps are almost silent in comparison. I was gutted when I test drove the comp after getting out of the og. Ended up going for the og. Spend a few grand on the og stage 2 440bhp and it’s just as fast as the comp but with much better sound track.

Nothing wrong with the n55 in the m2. it’s reliable, tuneable and sounds fantastic. If you only interested in drag races the M2 probably isn’t the car to choose in the first place.

@@user-xl7yf7pc7k suspension part numbers on the on the og m2 and comp are identical. The comp has a extra strut brace and different dsc,diff and steering software. All can easily be added to a og. Og is also lighter than the cs.

If I had the money, there would be an M2CS sat on the drive. Can't afford one, so my M140i (remapped) is such a practical yet fast daily. 200 cell sports cat and further remap next month, plus XHP3 box map, should make sure it is significantly faster than most other stock hot hatches and smaller M cars :-))

The M2CS is a parts bin special so the M2C is the smarter choice. Same M3/M4 engine, unlike the OG which had the lesser model's engine.

@@nessuno5403 A neighbour has an original M2 2018. It's a lovely car and would probably gap me in the twisty bits. But, £45,000 (it was very low mileage) is a lot of money. I think my M140i stands me at £23,000 after the mods, and will pull away from his M2 with ease now (455bhp/634nm). Yes I need better dampers, and a wavetrac diff. But with those, it will still only stand me at 27k and another 3k will get me an upgraded fuel pump and Pure800 turbo for close to 600bhp. It's a bargain. As for the M2CS, I think you assumed I meant the old version, silly you. The 2021 M2CS has the M4C engine.

@@DjNikGnashers eh? Tart up an M140i all you like, but it will never be an M car, just a traffic light sprint winner. And CS old version, new version? It's you assuming things and being factually wrong. I mentioned the OG to put it in context as model that wasn't a full M car (because of the N55 engine and missing F80 bits). Meanwhile, M2 CS has the same engine as the M2 Competition, but with an M4C tune. They all share the same S55 and max torque. Not sure where you get that the CS has a different engine to the M2C (I would know... owning and having tracked the latter; having driven the OG and rejected the CS and M140i).

The reason why the M-lites were so popular was because of the finance deals on them, pretty sure BMW were knocking them out at around 360 down and 360 a month for a new one. Had they not done this I feel more would have jumped towards the M2. Funnily enough the residuals on them now seem to be great considering how many they sold

I drive the m140i and its a fact that on average roads you just can't use all that power for anything but a few seconds before having to back off because it's just dangerous. Unless you go on track or onto open stretch off motorway and let's be honest you'd be driving at ridiculous speeds.

What let's the m2 comp down is the Exhaust sound. B58 sound pretty good. M lites are great cars for the money.

It's because of the opf filter, the M2 comp needs a non resonated equal length midpipe with opf delete. And believe me, the car will sound perfect

S55 sound is only an issue in the EU/UK. Overseas, particulate filters aren't required, so the M2C S55 sounds better than that in the F80.

Totally disagree. The OG M2 is the sweet spot in the range. The N55 is a more enjoyable engine to rev out than the B58 and all of them are way too fast for the road anyway unless you're a dual carriageway warrior. The OG is also the lightest of the bunch which helps and you can take less than half the difference to a CS and build an OG M2 into a car that's better in every way. But it's not a 'real' M engine 🙄

As for comparisons to the M-lites, they are great to 7/10ths, OK at 8 and fall to bits at 9-10/10ths, over B roads anyway. The M2 is a weapon right up to the limit and it's not easy to get a 40i to do that, certainly a brace and diff aren't even close.

I agree, OG is my personal favourite. It has a character that’s missing from the comp, it’s lighter than the cs and sounds amazing and arguably the better looking car.

I had a 140i for 3 years, then sold it for a manual M2C. The M2 is a completely different animal. It is much more capable and takes commitment to drive it hard. The harder you drive the better it gets, it really comes alive. The 140 was opposite to this and felt more like a grand tourer in comparison. The biggest difference that numbers don’t show is how much more special the M2 is with a big sense of occasion.

Some man juice will come out of your third leg when they release G87 with presumably the S58 in. That has the makings of being in the same tier as E46 M3 for me. Improved F87 chassis with the Motorsport version B58, recipe for success, and weaponry to slay some GT3’s?👀

The only juice coming out of anyone will likely be vomit: you can bet the G87 will be bigger, fatter, uglier. The S58 is detuned and the car may be built in Mexico too.

@@nessuno5403 early renders look better than M3/4, but not as pretty as current M2. It’ll sit somewhere in between. Detuned S58 - software over hardware. Once the ‘impossible to crack DME’ have been unlocked you’ll soon see 6/700hp S58’s, 900 on hybrids etc. Will it go xdrive I doubt it

@@one40i19 the DME since MY21 is locked and not cracked yet. The S58 will have a more heavy duty chastity belt. AWD? Get an Audi :) Apparently, they'll soon show the iM2 which is a 1000bhp electric car that may show the styling direction of G87.

The M2s are very nice but I was happy to get an M135 for an affordable price - Didn't realise there was so much snobbery going on until I had one, seems like those with full Ms like to put down the M lite brigade which is odd but maybe it helps them justify why they paid much more money. In a country where where the pretend police sit in vans and fund the real police ball every time you let the turbo scroll up who cares - M lite still beats most cars on the road.

@@duosable A tuned civic can't beat a tuned BMW just in straight up power especially it lags all day and by the time it his peak the race is already over so i don't know maybe you just purchased a civic while i had a few of them tuned and turboed and never are they that car to beat the BMWs maybe on handling but not even that i'm being nice.

I have owned an M235, an M240, an M2 and an M2 comp. The M lites are amazing cars. The OG M2 is awesome but from a performance perspective there is very little difference between it and the M lites. The M2 comp is in a another league though. Significantly faster than all three. The sound of the OG M2 is way better though.

That's an urban myth, practically speaking. The internet let's little sparks (mainly due to owners massively modified and abused S55 engines) become wild fires in the hands of owners of lesser engined cars 🙂

M2 Comp has s55 only because EU emission norms. To be honest I prefer wild and riot nature of OG M2 over top end power of M2 comp. M2 comp is better if u want to go for big power 500+ and it's faster but only above 100mph , 0-60 and 1/4mile times are basically the same for comp and OG. But must say that lowered comp with carbon bits from your vid looks stunning.
