Is the Chrysler 8.25 really a weak link in your Jeep xj?

How tough is it!
8.25 tube diameter: 3-inch
8.25 ring gear: 8.25-inch
8.25 axle shafts: 27 spline/1997 and newer 29 spline
Basically, the pre-97 8.25 is stronger than a D35, but not by all that much. The 97+ 8.25 is much stronger than a D35 and is actually comparable to a D44.

If you have an older 27 spline 8.25 you can put a 29 spline carrier and shafts in it, also a disc brake conversion will keep the axle from walking out if you break one, you can get the disc brake parts from a Jeep Liberty. I have 97 XJ with a 5.5 RE lift, Dana 30 front, 8.25 rear, 4.56 gears, Spartan lockers in both ends, 35s and stock axle shafts. Never broken anything other than a shock mount, shocks, and bent control arms.

@@Lray4x4 why 4.56 instead of 4.88? Also, I’m thinking about doing the disco brake conversion. Were you able to just get everything from the Liberty? How did you make your wheels work? Drilled rotors, wheel spacer adapters, or just different rims with liberty bolt pattern?

Running 29 spline 8.25 with disk brake conversion 4.88 gears and ARB locker. Part of the fun is knowing what you got and wheeling appropriately to it’s capabilities. We don’t get crazy on the skinny pedal and honestly with dropping the tire pressure and locked front and rear can just about go anywhere.

I currently have the 8.25 on my 99. For the most part she is a daily on a 3 inch lift and 31's. The untimate plan is to get better shafts and go to 35s with the Dirt Bound Offroad Flares and 4.56 gearing. Condsidering 4.5in Long arms as well. Go with more of a Low COG weekend warrior type build. The trail rig is the BFs. 86 CJ7 that is now on custom Dana 44, Dana 489 that we ordered from East Coast Geat Supply 2-3 years ago now. On 35's.

If you have the dana 35, definitely get either the 8.25 or the 8.8. I like the 8.8 and think its a much better axle, but if you are on a budget and want a direct swap, the 29 spline 8.25 is a great option. My fully built 8.8 swap only cost me $580 plus $325 for a detroit locker. All in all, i have a super strong axle with a truss and disk brakes for $900. I am happy with my decision.

Would this possibly be a good option for a 94' Yota ex-cab 4x4 v6 pickup? My rear diff is leaking at the 3rd member to pumkin seal pretty bad so I have to drop the drive shaft and pull out the axles to then pull the 3rd member just to replace it. So if going through all that I'm thinking of trying out a different (used) axle and the Jeep 8.25 is on the list of considerations since it has a removable back plate (mine doesnt!). How wide is the 8.25 from flange to flange.. not counting brakes or anything. If I could get a few more inches of width it could be an option for me.

Dana 30 is great. 8.25 is great. both to a point. I’ve never daily driven anything but my xj’s since I was 15. never did an axle swap. Dana 35’s are junk, you can only polish a turd so far. I run 29 spline 8.25’s in all my xj’s. 33’s are the sweet spot for this axle. big enough to get you that diff clearance, small enough that you can get away with a little more skinny petal. they daily drive well too, even with stock 3.55’s. Dana 44’s are great, but if you’re gunna axle swap, 8.8 I think is the best non full width option

so basically, the d35 and the d30 shafts are close to the same. the 35 is like 50 thousandths thicker. but the weight rides on the axle and not directly the bearing. the d35 gets a ton of bad rep because of the weak tubes causing the C clips to break of. the 8.25 is substantially superior in many ways.. MUCH larger bearing journal, thicker tubes, few more splines. really, its comparable to a D44 in many ways. I forget you xj guys have to worry about axles walking out.. you can actually just slap some disks on it from a ZJ D35, and forget about that problem.
