It's ironic how the Passat fared much, much worse over the course of years. The C5 is a much, much better car, better built, with better diesel engines and with its unique HN suspension.
The C5 has a better ride quality than the 407 . The C5 x7 is an evolved 407 with better styling and ride quality. Although the 407 handles great with a light weight feel, it corners brilliantly. Having owned the 407 and the C5 X7 and a Passat . Forget the Passat its too narrow. Couldnt stand the Passat I owned, thick plastic and felt too German with a nasty ride quality. The Passat felt like a Bath Tub, so narrow for a mid range saloon. The C5's all feel big, my favourite was the 2.2 VTR with loads of torque and a great engine. I have owned the C5 series 1, series 2, Series 3 X7 and I still love the series 1 the most, for its quality. It was built for high mileage. I am not sure why the series 2 C5 felt like a cheaper quality car though, I think it was lighter to avhieve better MPG. Citroen had the build quality anyway its just about customer perception with german cars. The C5 X7 is very nicely built with a great ride quality and stylish interior
The main difference between Passat and C5 is that Passat makes you feel depressed when you see it or sit inside it. C5 makes you feel special. Its very easy to fall in love with and it has a soul and a very strong personality. Something that German cars often lack...
I love this new Citroen C5. I was very impressed when I checked one out in a Dublin showroom. A beautiful well made solidly built car.Domagoj Dukec and his team did a wonderful job. I know of someone has has had one of these for quite a while. He does big mileage. He is thrilled with this car and so far total reliability in his case.
I drive a 58 regged C5. I've had it for over 3 years and it's really comfortable and sturdy. No breakdowns whatsoever (not counting the service changes of brakes, oil etc) and quite economical. I can push it to 63 mpg on long motorway drives. 35000 miles of hardcore driving in cities, motorways and even bumpy countryside roads and it hasn't let me down. :)
This C5 Citroen is made extremely strongly and it is actually a pretty heavy car. I was very impressed with the quality both inside and out when I went in one. the C5 Citroen got outstanding results in the EU crash test and was awarded one of the highest marks and also of course got the full five stars.
The Citroen C5 has just been crowned "Semperit Irish Car of the Year 2009". I truly love the looks and the comfort of the C5. The driver's seat is so comfortable and the car is very well built.
Citroen c5 is used by our company as fleet cars, and reliability is really good, reaching over 100.000 miles without any major issues, 2.0 hdi vtr+ 6 spd manual with normal suspension, easily the best option, cheaper to maintain, and has all the creature comforts....superb
Themoigt people need to know how good these cars are? Instead of the negatives associated with Jdpower surveys, facts are that Citroen c5s are used mainly as company cars, in comparison to Lexus/Honda, which are purchased by uber careful drivers, so it's pretty obvious that the fleet cars will have more issues, because they get used and a abused more than the Hondas/Lexus cars, I suppose the good news, is that we know how good they are, of others want to believe the misinformation carried out by surveys, it's us, that benefits re bargain prices
This new Citroen C5 is a superbly beautiful and well made car. I have been in it so I know. I previously mentioned about the man I know who travels a lot and he has had a C5 for well over a year and always had 100% reliability. It is an extremely comfortable and safe car.
I think this C5 Citroen is one of the most beautiful cars. It is very solidly built. I kmow of someone who has owned this car for more than a year. He pulls a caravan and does big mileage. His C5 Citroen has always been totally reliable. He loves the comfort of the car etc.
The new Citroen C5 is extremely heavily and strongly built. It did excellently in the EU crash tests. They have genuinely made a very big effort with this car. As I mentioned, it shares engines with Peugeot and Ford etc. Nowadays cars have become very international.
It is true I have had wonderful reliability with my almost 10 year old Seat Toledo at 167,000 miles. I know of someone who has had total reliability with this C5. He pulls caravans for more than a year in UK, Spain and france and loves the quality and comfort.I would buy this beautiful C5 anytime.
I bought a Seat Toledo TDiSE new near the end of 1999. The car has done 167,000 miles now and is amazingly reliable and comfortable. The quantities of free extras still work perfectly. The car still does over 60 mpg on long runs. The Passat is very much related, so I have respect for all VW sourced cars.
I drive a Seat Toledo TDiSE and bought it new at the end of 1999. It's a fantastically reliable and comfortable car. It has done 168,000 miles and it may well do twice that at least. Over 60 mpg on long runs and plenty of performance.
Domagoj Dukec seems to have been the main designer of this car. There was probably a team working together at Citroen. A superb looking car. When I saw it in a showroom it really looked lovely in a type of charcoal black.
Maybe because French cars are mostly made by Arab hands in French factories. Engeenering and technology are very good, PSA are the first diesel engines makers in the world, but manufacturing, even if a lot of improvments were made these last decades, still needs to be amelioriated.
We here still have a A6 1.9 tdi super reliable. When they decided to the 2.0 tdi it became unreliable. On the other hand I drove the c5 hdi and yes surprisingly good for the french.
I would have agreed with you five or six years ago but they have moved on in leaps and bounds. Of course I cannot see into the future but having seen the changes in management ethos, design and of course manufacture I would be massively surprised if these cars did not last as long and run as reliably as any BMW/Merc/VW.
It does compare in quality (and subjectively on looks too) to the bmws/audis etc but it is in a lower price bracket with other fwd motorway mile munchers like the Passat. Comfortwise the C5 eats the competition alive though.
Regarding Kia, maybe 5 years ago, but certainly not today. You would be surprised by just how much effort they've put into their new cars. Literally bounds and leaps ahead of their predecessors.
I just found out, that the C5 did win that award, but took second place overall to a small Toyota; which would be very understandable in Japan.the Citroen company have every reason to be very proud though.
At 2.07 mins when SJ Mee is driving the Passat ????...... ROAD NOISE !!! ... aT 2.15 MINS ..... when Mike Brewer is in the Citroen ...... HIS VOICE IS LOUDER THEN THE CAR !!! ... Even in RR Phantoms ... they are silent !!!!.......... But once about 20 mph ??? . That "stone age" .... "concrete-type" .... "crass-noise" ... like driving on solid perished tyres !!!! ... ... HAPPY NEW YEAR for 2022
@TheEuroperules if its the only thing what youre asking from a CAR, a fantastic look, then you could make a horse wagon look fantastic. the point is how the specific car acts on the road, its comfortability, safety, spare parts price, fidelity, manuevrability etc etc....
No i dont own Xantia myself - in fact i have Toyota Auris. My dad have Xantia and its very reliable - thats a fact. Just look at Tuv 2008 reliability report: 28.Honda Civic14,3% 29.Citroen Xantia14,4% 30.Mercedes-Benz S14,6% 31.Mazda 62615,2% 32.BMW 715,4% 32.Honda Accord15,4% 63.Renault Mégane20,4% 66.Renault Scénic20,5% 67.Volvo S70/V7020,7% 67.VW Sharan20,7% 67.VW Passat20,7% Whats there to discuss?
bens 1972 I totally agree with you! I`d pick the C5, actually I think it`s the best car in it`s class for a price like that, remember that this isn`t luxury car like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus,... Well done Citroen!!!!!
well we have Citroen Xantia 2.0 HDi a have to say thats a good car never drove in 807, but Xaantia has never broke down. Well ony once and that was because of a loose oil pipe. it has around 105.000 kilometers on it now.
When I say 'German', of course i include seat and skoda- as they are in effect VWs- also European Fords are more or less German cars, though Opels/Vauxhalls seem to carry the GM ethos of make 'em cheap, sell 'em cheap, which is why they're good new and terrible if they haven't been looked after meticulously.
The b6 Passat is indeed a ball of shit... have a b5 1.9tdi and its a fantastic car.. 200k and still perfect mechanically... but the 2.0tdi sport b6 that I bought for my wife...its needed all its injectors and turbo at 100k...terrible ball of plastic muck. By the way there is a recall on all 2.0tdi b6 diesel passats across Europe for the injectors free of charge by VW...Regards.
True indeed. C5 is the best in it`s class when it comes to comfort. However, I miss in Hydractive 3+ an option that Xantia Active had (sport mode and in it no BMW let alone Audi of that era can beat it when cornering it realy was cornering machine and you could have both comfort and sportiness in the same car), sure the C5 has also some sort of sport mode but it is far away frome that of Xantia Activa`s. Nevertheless my number 1 choice in this class!
you don't need to think Ettore Bugatti was an Italian then he went to France where he started the company Bugatti so indeed sir you know the right facts :)
im irritating my self a lot, yeah its comparable to the c6, but stuff like the rear window is actually based on the one from the CX, and the DS is best car they build, but i geuss his history is maxed out at 8years back
citroen knows how to make reliable cars - xantia is was one of the most reliable cars in its class (and still is - if you look at rankings for cars 10-12 years old xantia is 50-60 places ahead of passat together with accord and primera).
Does anyone know who the true designer of the new C5 is? I thought he was Belgian, then somebody told me he was a Croation who had worked at Audi.then someone told me Belgium must have been involved.i saw a picture of the Croatian man next to a sketch of the C5 on Google.
ya C5 is one of the best in Europe. i realley dont like german cars maybie Mercedes and Audi. Passat is a realley hard car. I mean you float in a Citroen and but in a passat in a few hour of driving your spine will hurt if you will drive on bumpy roads.
I dont understand this video. Why do they say that C5 is about the same as Passat? Once you sit from C5 to Passat you feel like sitting in a cheap plastic city cars. Its not even in the same league.
+cologne4ever Awesome :O...If you don't want much money to car,you should buy Japanese car.Cuz they aren't have to repair many times!But.... many people are riding Japanese car in JapanCuz I wanna buy Citroen car xDThey are very beautiful and unique lol
I really like the new Citroen c5.But this comparison is not fer.The citroen c5 is on sale since 2008 and the passat in the video is on sale for almost 6 years. So it is normal that the citroen is better then the passat in every way.We have to wait for the new passat model 2011 and then we will see.If you people want to know which of these cars is better i suggest you go test drive both of this cars. The car that you think is better at the end buy it.
The worst for that is Kia. Cheap cars are good in concept and when you buy it new however where I work there is a saying... If you buy a new Kia 6 months later you'll have a 10 year old car. I do honestly believe though that the new Citroens have come along so far that it is unfair to base opinion upon their older models. Either way everyone has an opinion which they are entitled too and because cars are such a personal thing there are very few opinions you can knock.
3:05 C5 is the best citroen ever.....are you jocking mister????? the C6 worth much more than that C5, and yet C6 is a tastless car compared to DS CX and SM....I can't believe he just said such a BS. Where has he been?
the problem is these people are testing NEW cars- brand new, in my experience there's often a gulf btw perceived quality and actual quality- perceived quality was great in the just changed Renault megane when it came out- autocar, what car they all said Renault had raised quality to 'Golf' standards- a few years down the line and things don't seem so any more- the cars have sub standard reliability and have depreciated accordingly- the Golf has not. I would also buy any Honda or Lexus.
German cars are great. and yes lambo and buggati belong to vw. but why vw bought them in the first place? to get supercar knowledge from these companies plus the marketing benefit...thanks for the name calling btw
80s passat are better in terms of reliability tha new ones. And no this is not 80s passat - its reliability ranking for cars 9-11 years old made by German organisation TUV.
Sorry RiiDDiiM everyone is entitled to their different views. I personally like Fifth Gear and it's presenters. Thank goodness they don't go the Top Gear route.
German cars these days are a pile of shit to be honest in terms of build quality and especially reliability. A proper solid, quality car is something Japanese. Most notably a Toyota or Lexus.
so what you are saying is that germans cant make proper supercars (except porsche) and they have to buy Italian knowledge, engineers and designers... you do realise that is the opposite of what you are trying to say
dont talk crap...french cars are much more better nowdays than germans, because they are equal by quailiti but german cars are more expencive... now ppl chose french cars cause they are beautifle, realible and good build qualiti. just look at this C5,C6 then look at Laguna, then Megane even look at 407 and 308! they are awesome! i would love sport Laguna 2.0 DCI and it has 175hp so imagine that with 6 litters ond 100km
