Well, I bought one. A few days in, and I wanted to get a sense of the "power" of this thing. Of course, we are told it has 8 cores, and is the most powerful modeler (I guess in terms of sheer gigaflops or womblebytes or something) - but as a User - what's it actually capable of?

I've been critical of the FTM so far - but I was surprised that I liked your FTM tone better than the Helix tone in the beginning. FTM was smoother and more detailed. The Helix was just a touch too furry. That said I'm no closer to wanting one. I'm a home player - happy with plugins. If I did go back to a physical modeler, I'd likely go back to Kemper. Might be tempted by an FM3 again. FTM? Not at all. *** Side Note: Your little girl is absolutely precious. My babies are grown now. Soak up every bit of this time with her. It may not seem like it now - but they grow up so fast. 🙂

I thank you for your insights, many vids get very complex with their reviews, and I am sure many appreciate that. I am just an average bedroom player, and the sound seems decent to me, but it is the ease of use that I love. So, on that alone I am sold. I am sure this will get much better. Actually, If I really like it, I will be getting rid of a lot of amps and pedals I have. I want to play, and I want to stop playing around with equipment. I will give it a few months before I get it though.

Sounds like it's a lot of cash and John can't find the reason behind buying one. As he says if Fender wants to turn up to the modeling world late they better have something that fixes what the others have missed. John can't find what that is so it's a mystery product.

The real test is in a mix at a gig... with enough tweaking, almost any piece of gear can sound good in a controlled environment. About 2 years ago we started running a silent stage... looked at pretty much every modeler out, settled on the Boss GX-100 (largely due to your videos, thanks btw). In the mix, at a bar gig, it's perfect. There's a lot of competition in my band for sonic space... guitar, bass, drums, 2 keyboard players, an acoustic guitar player, and 5 vocals. With all that going on, the Boss does a great job. This Fender unit hasn't shown any justification for being roughly $1,000 more expensive... so far. Maybe that's a comparison you could try... gig with the Boss GX-100 and with this, see if there's any noticeable difference in a live setting. Keep up the great work!

As a semi Luddite, current rig is two tone Master Deluxes with a stereo pedalboard. It allows me to go direct, power attenuation (half juice on the Deluxe keeps up with bass and drums just fine), and I don’t have to deal with menu option anxiety. Also, with the recent demise of my long suffering “Time Factor” I purchased the DL4 MkII which has all the original patches I love AND the Helix reverbs. Basically I’m still a tap dancer that wants no part of midi. As always, I find much value in your dispatches John. Thanks for your time.

Helix pitch shift way less glitchy. Thanks for getting into the details. The limited routing is a deal breaker for sure. Noone ever invites Boss to these parties, but I'm often using all 3 dividers on GT-1000, with more blocks than the Fender can handle. Not gonna say it looks or sounds better but I need the flexibility. Are you noticing any issue with touch screen responding to callused guitar playing fingertips? Looks like you're dragging blocks to trash a couple times before they respond.

Not sure if I have posted this before (apologies if I have), but the Mission SP1-TMP (co branded and custom paint) unlocks things like volume control, wah and a lot of cool creativity/control. Fender also made it reeeeally easy to set up the expression and the toe switch. Control up to 5 parameters at once and use the toe switch to turn off one or all effects. Be great to see a video covering this :-)

At this point I want more footswitches than a helix not less. When I filled out a survey by line6 asking about what's important I put footswitches as one of the most important. I don't want to have to find ways to economize a preset. I would like a footswitch for everything I need to do; Boost the mids, boost the volume, add a booster, change tremolo speed, increase delay mix etc. I don't want to be jumping all over changing presets to have to use another effect. Using the helix without the Bank Up/Bank Down switches in stomp mode can usually accommodate my needs but there have been some instances when I would have loved to have the flexibility of another on/off, or parameter.

A good valve amp sounds better. We are all pretending that modellers can get close - they can't. I remember going to the Rewind festival a few gears ago, and many of the bands used a Kemper. It sounded alright, but when ELO came on with a JCM 900 stack, I could hear the difference so clearly. The Marshall killed the Kemper. Invest in amps, make amps great again!

I've been using Fender Modeling amps since Fender introduced the Mustang line. I am currently using the GTX modeler. All have really great Fender models. The only "issue" I have with the modelers in general, is the fact you end up with so many features and settings you will never, ever....ever, open up or use. Still, brilliant modeling amps.

Thank you for the blind comparison between the TMP (FTM?) and the the Helix Native at the beginning. Confirmed what I've suspected: the difference is de minimus, and overall both sound great! Although you've complicated my life, now. 😅 Although I'm loving the simplicity, ease-of-use, and sheer fun of using the TMP, it's prob not wise for me to part with my Helix anytime soon. Agree with your initial thoughts on the power of the unit. A bit suspect that Fender hasn't published any specifications that would back up the claim on its website to be the "most powerful...guitar processor ever" on the market. Various sources have reported that it has eight cores vs the four cores on the Quad Cortex. But nothing official from Fender. Also, is there a separate GPU handling all the skeuomorphic rendering? If not, and the cores are handling both the graphics rendering and the DSP audio processing...this could hamper the ability of the eight cores to handle more than two amp combo models simultaneously.

Here's a thought: the micro SD card slot may be the TMP's ace up the sleeve. Limits on the number of cabinets is prob a function of the limits of the program memory component of the DSP. The manual says the micro SD card slot is for "future expansion of Tone Master PRO functionality", whatever that may mean. However, UHS-II v90 micro SD cards are a thing, and powerful enough to handle 8K video recording. They would chew through the most demanding audio workloads by orders of magnitude. Theoretically, the v90 micro SD card speed in an audio context would be plenty fast for the TMP's core processors to use to temporarily offload audio processing tasks in real time. So perhaps Fender plans to leverage the sd card memory capacity to unleash the full power of the unit? Pure speculation at this point, but a possibility nonetheless.

John , yeah you dialed in a better patch / tone. To me this thing looks reverse engineered from key features of the other leading modelers in terms of form factor and things like dual use of foot switches and encode / adjust like the neural. The ui , signal paths, etc are probably more limited initially based in code structure rather than power ( number of cores). This is definitely version 1.0 from a code perspective. We need to give it time to see what the first couple rounds of firmware updates accomplish. That should also give an indication of their longer term commitment.

I was thinking too, somewhere between 1,000 and $1,200, this thing would be very competitive, and be able to gain vital market share. It's quite a crowded market at this point, the Fender fanboys will buy up at first, but to maintain sales, it will need to be competitively priced to create a base of people that use it. Otherwise it will become a niche product.

That pitch shifting in the Fender was not anywhere near the Helix, it sounded like a ringmodulator at times. Boss has had seamless patch switching since 2018 with the GT-1000 and on the GX-100 you can also have that but it apparently depends on how different the effect chain is, but we are talking about a device that is about a third of the Tone master and still can do dual amps and quite a few effect blocks. I dont own any of these but the Tone master would not currently be on my list of potential units. It surely has potential, the UI and IO seems nice but i havent heard any good sounding distorted sounds so far and it doesnt seem impressive functionwise.

I dont know where I should head with all this. On the one hand, you have the option of building your own pedalboard, or you could buy this. As a young guitarist I have absolutely no idea what to invest in, especially if these get software updates later on. So many choices to make these days! I wonder what will be more popular 10 years from now.

Until Fender comes out with a polyphonic pitch shifter I don't think that's a really meaningful comparison. I wonder if they will eventually give you the option to have a preset set to either allow gapless switching, or not allow it and use more processing power. It's an interesting choice.

$1700 for a modeler seems too much, but in the end, its all about the tones. If they're truly that good, it will do well. There room for everythng in the market. Many hate Headrush stuff, but their stuff sells very, very well. There's a product for everyone.

The Tonemaster Pro has loads of CPU power and the sounds are really good. I think the way they implemented capture/profile capabilities in their $1700 device was really smart and a unique way to capture/profile amps & pedals. Oh wait. Never mind. Big miss there Fender. But adding overlooked features are what firmware updates are for.

@mrtruefifth
@mrtruefifth 9 месяцев назад
@@johnnathancordy Thanks, but many RU-vid demos did not do this and there are more amps and better sound with the update and reset, so it's a relevant question. Also, Fender has stated on TGP that they use Electronic Component Modelling, this means that all amps and pedals are quite slow to develop, as all and each electronic part in a given amp or pedal is digitally copied / emulated. It also means that the Memory Man Deluxe pedal acts on the dry signal just as in real life - as answer to your question your other video. It also means that the Fender amps are the exact same as those released with physical amps in the Tone Master series.
@PuRe_AdDicT

To me, seamless preset switching is a WOW, and it's drawing me in. How is having parallel paths on QC any different to this? If I can swap to any preset seamlessly, then I can swap to any signal chain seamlessly, what does it matter if it's within the same preset or not? It's as simple as pressing a footswitch on either device EXCEPT the QC is limited to 4 preset seamless, while I can swap any amount of presets with the TMP (unless I'm missing something) 🤷‍♂
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy 9 месяцев назад
Well, because there are a few ways to use other units, and if we are talking about sheer power etc, then running 3 or 4 amps is possible on other units - quite a lot more on the Quad Cortex?
@PuRe_AdDicT
@PuRe_AdDicT 9 месяцев назад
@@johnnathancordyA valid point I guess, but I don’t think I’ve ever wanted more than 2 amps at any one time in a signal chain (and that’s wet/dry), seems quite a niche situation to have 3 or 4 in a single signal path. Can’t say I’ve ever seen you use 4 amps in a preset in any video here, but I could be wrong of course.
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy 9 месяцев назад
@@PuRe_AdDicT definitely a bit of a niche, but there's a helix video where I have 4 amps in it for a big blues tone, and in Quad Cortex. Also, if you remember that was one of the selling points of the quad cortex, that you could (however rare, but I have seen people say they're doing this) run 2 guitars and a bass through the unit without too much sweat. Under the current DSP allocation set up that wouldn't be possible with the TMP
@QuoVadis88
@QuoVadis88 7 месяцев назад
I can see why you returned the TMP. You are making a statement. You are both right and wrong. Right in that the "most powerful" modeler has pedestrian limits. Wrong in that what was true yesterday is not necessarily true today. The flagship TMP will be upgraded considerably. I have one. There are updates that I am looking forward to. I will not bail on Fender's flagship TMP. This unit works well. We all have limits. I can't send myself back to the manufacturer, they went out of business (dead). So I have to carry on and improve. The TMP does what it does so far with excellence. I don't need 4 rows of amps. If I did, I would get an additional TMP, (one TMP into the effects loop of the other) which would be a good investment. I did get two Fender FR-12 cabs for that stereo Wall of Sound. My headphones have two speakers, one for left, one for right. If I can't get a good sound with two amps ... but I can ... as when the Beatles started recording in the early 1960's, they only had two tracks yet sold millions of records and performed brilliantly great music. The TMP is a fine piece of gear, even with the limits you mention. As you see in the comments, some people prefer the sound of the TMP compared to the other modelers you push. You do play well though, and you can get some great sounds.

Before complaining about the price have a look at the build costs. Firstly the build costs will be way higher than you think. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QzbKtmEt68E.htmlsi=8wwAk9QkkSAQoCyz This is for the Quad Cortex but the same xounts for the Fender ( i am told its a higher quality display and additional processors & memory which mist definitely raises the build cost) Additionally the first realease will have a higher price. Of course the costing info i was given could have been given incorrect.

Here is a question. What does an amp sound like? Well it depends what you plug into it. If your ax has Hummbuckers it will sound different than if you used single coils. Amps have a 'type of sound'. Fender black face, Marshall, Vox. But there is no distinct sound that defines any amp. Can the modeler replicate those types? Yes. Since the Zoom G5 modelers have been able to it do well. If I did a blind test of real or digital would anyone tell the difference? Is that how we listen to music? When buying a device I look at the price, size, and support. Then I look at the interface and ease of use. Back in the day You had ONE amp (2 channels switchable). You plugged a pedal or two into it and played your gig. Now it seem to be how good on paper something is. How many cores are at play and can I run 20 amps. This is not music anymore.

So a daw render of a pitch effect is better than most modellers attempt at pitch shifting - hardly big news. Poly Capo eats DSP on my Stomp and is not as reliable as a Pitchfork for example where chords don’t suffer from the same artifacts as you’re hearing here.
