Most cards have an expiration date of hype. You have to sell when the player is still relevant. Especially football.

Hi Doc, Hope you have a super nice vacation. You made a comment a while back about selling, collecting and hoarding. The one thing that you encrypted into my brain was if you have a card or an item that you don`t want to sell, then that's part of your collection. The problem is my collection is turning into a semi-hoard? lol. Been up grading 71 topps baseball card set for years and comfortable with the set finally. But When you upgrade a card then you gradually have a partial set. So being addicted to the 71 set.........my brain just automatically told me to do another set since I have 1/2 a set from the upgrades. But better angels told me no 1 is enough and I sold the partial set for 550$ and bought a 1957 topps mickey mantle sgc 4 for 640$ And I really liked how it all happened. Thanks for all your work on making all the quality videos. Much Respect Jim S.

I went to the National this year and you could tell that 90+% of the people there were there for the money. 2 things I look for when I go to a show are #1: I am looking for the right cards, and #2: I have to pay the right price. I understand trying to get as much for your cards as possible, but when you see showcases overflowing with cards, then either no one wants those specific cards or the prices are too high. Bottom line: Right cards, right price. Even in this crap economy where people can’t afford bread on the table, right cards--right prices--cards sell…….

I changed my handle, but I appreciate you replying to my comment about fees. I was more trying to point to the 0.40 or 0.50 per card fee eBay charges. Most people don't notice this fee because it is wrapped into the transaction fee on eBay but if you look at the details it shows it to you. Recently I sold a card for $7.30 +sales tax. The eBay Transaction fee was 1.24 so 16.9%. Plus I had to pay for the ESE. So I NETTED $5.37 /paid a 26% fee after shipping from selling a $7.30 card.

I think in 1988 I was obsessed with the money(even though I I loved baseball and still do). I since realized it's hard to make money in the hobby. And frankly I have a collector mentality anyhow. Hopefully whoever finds my cards when I'm dead and gone gets a few bucks lol

You had 5000 worth of cards but that's only part of the story....How much did you spend to get those cards. Surely more then 5000. And you sold out for 1500. That is a HUGE loss buddy

I am double commenting lol. The card should be priced by two factors, what the seller is willing to accept and the buyer is willing to pay. If you need to move the card, then selling it lower makes sense. If you are good with holding the card, then it is ok to wait for the price you want.

I've quite enjoyed your content ever since I found you. I've traveled and bought many wild collections in the past few years. If folks just has a wild stack of stuff, and can't prove it's worth.. Alot of times some arbitrary number comes up.. The bigger the collections are, the more folks tend to loose selling at once unprepared. With the economy as it is, selling a large lot of cards grows very tedious. As you said, if a dealer does all the work sorting... It best have legitimate value or it won't sell.

Collected during 80s junk wax, during pandemic I saw online cards going up & my Jerry Rice RC was maybe worth thousands of $$$. Dug em out of garage attic & found out other people's cards are worth $15.000 each, but my card was off center (still in the screw down case I put it in when I pulled it) & needed to go to be gradede before it could be worth more than a few bucks. My big surprise was this went to all my cards & I needed thousands to grade my cards before they can be worth anything but a couple of dollars a piece. I'm not impressed with this new hobby, but that being said I have started buying ungraded singles & feel like a new hobby king, even though I know they are basically still not worth anything. 😂

I’d say that money headlines grab my attention because I’ll never spend that kind of money on anything besides a house so I wonder what that kind of money gets you.
@erronyoshioka8800
@erronyoshioka8800 Месяц назад
The biggest problem is that card companies like Panini and Topps, especially after 2016, started charging crazy prices for wax! Way over what you would get by busting it! Then grading made it worse, as the card producers now raised wax prices even more as they as priced all their cards as GEM MINT, even though consumers still had to pay to grade them! Add in the big distributors, who influenced these companies to jack prices even more. Funny how these companies could “blindly” pre-sell boxes at the exact same prices the card companies did later on at release day! Why won’t Panini even put prices on their website until release day? There is not even a set formula to what they charge dealers! So much is hype. . . So prices are exponentially crazy everywhere! When a collector busts anything good, I will admit that I hold out for maximum money not because of “what it’s worth,”. BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT I HAD TO PAY TO GET THAT CARD! But people who gambled and “hit” from breakers will undercut people who bought whole boxes or cases! Hobby is very messed up. . . Then you gotta add in taxes, ebay fees, etc.etc. Collectors get no breaks!

It’s funny that everyone keeps saying oh the markets going to go fall dramatically , and that seems to be a constant. So another month goes by and if you look at the numbers, the market is rising in a slow, healthy manor…. I appreciate and respect your opinion and your videos, but the fear mongering I think may leave people holding the bag because they’re not buying the things that they want. I understand yes the market could fall out, but fear of it falling to nothing, because it is tied to the economy, is not a guarantee…. I understand the economics of it, but I think with all the new blood coming into the hobby it’s not going to be as drastic as you and many other pundits predict…. Thank you for your time and your videos.

Dealers are all the same, most say an ounce of silver is an ounce of silver regardless weather it is rare like 1 of 5000. You are a dealer and collector and have a dealer mind set. I think Etopps cards are worth a lot more than what the dealer thinks. Etopps cards cost the company more to produce and was phased out after 2011. I believe Etopps cards are worth much more than what dealers think because the are numbered and they were refractor like cards that you could not just go buy at a store. You told me that they will not have much value but I still believe Etopps cards will increase in value as the years go bye. Am I right or wrong?

Very undervalued cards. I owned a Pujols rookie from the set. I sold it and got into rookie photos and photo slides of Pujols, Griffey, etc. I think eTopps will increase in value with players like Pujols, but I think they'll always be less valuable than his renowned rookie refractors.
@vintagecollector5340

It's considered taboo by most to talk about investing within the hobby, but I say go for it. Ignore the noise. People will always complain anyhow. I've had some very good success with investing in the hobby. If you find a very undervalued niche within the hobby, like eTopps....buy them up. As long as you buy the right players at the right prices, I don't see you going wrong.

Cards unfortunately are valued by the hype the person gives it. You have a lot of followers and fame then you can name your price. Cards should be valued by top sales popularity due to condition rarity. Unfortunately many sell at desperate or have no clue value. Then the flippers are out to sell as many cards as fast as they can instead selling at the best time for value. PS I have the 1st 1/1 Herbert RC by Panini. The card is worth what the most a person is willing to pay for it.

@@vintagecollector5340 The highest amount sold for depending if something happened to the athlete. If you sell a Babe Ruth Rookie for 1 dollar are they all worth 1 dollar?

@@castortroysfaceoffsportsca9012 I don't forsee anything bad happening to Ruth anytime soon. You might could get a reprint for a dollar. There's not a single authentic Ruth that would ever sell for a dollar, unless the seller made a big mistake in thinking it was a reprint. It's happened before, but very rare.

@@vintagecollector5340 And why? Ya got your value.... All about the Hype of the player/popularity.
@vintagecollector5340
@vintagecollector5340 Месяц назад
@@castortroysfaceoffsportsca9012 I agree on the hype and popularity aspect, but not on the value. If you look at any auction of vintage Ruth cards, you'll see that they all bring premiums. Obviously, nobody is even bothering with someone who is low-balling them on their items. Same can be said for an ounce of gold: is it only worth a dollar if that's what someone offers? Of course not. These are all niche markets that all require serious buyers. Is a house only worth 10,000.00 if that's what someone offers? There's market comps for all this stuff, and only serious buyers are going to offer near market prices.

You literally have no idea what you're talking about. People are buying $50K cards $100K cards at every Dallas show I go. And aren't you only concerned about money when you constantly say that cards aren't investments? Who cares? That's money-focused. You aren't nearly as informed as you think you are...and that's OK. But to pretend that you are helping people understand this hobby is complete and utter nonsense.
